Bio:

Tank is a British heavy metal band, formed in 1980 by Algy Ward, a former member of The Damned. The band is known as part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. Tank was often compared to Motörhead as both bands, trios fronted by singing bassists, played a loose, almost punk-styled metal music with often colourful lyrics.Their 1982 debut album, Filth Hounds of Hades, was positively received by both punk and metal fans as well as most critics, regarded now as one of the best albums of the NWOBHM movement.Allmusic critic, Eduardo Rivadavia; described it as "Tank's best album ever, and qualifying it as an essential item in the record collection of any serious '80s metal fan."As was the case with many other bands of the era, Tank was never able to build on the promise shown by their first album. The band continued on for years through lineup changes and waning commercial fortunes before finally disbanding in 1989. Ward resurrected the band in 1997 playing tour dates around Europe and Japan for a couple of years. A new album, Still At War, emerged in 2002. In August 2006 Ward reported that he was putting the finishing touches on the demos for the next Tank album, Sturmpanzer. The band's website has listed the release date for this album as "TBA" for years. On December 20, 2008, a new lineup was announced. Guitarists Mick Tucker and Cliff Evans were joined by original drummer Mark Brabbs and former Bruce Dickinson bassist Chris Dale. Algy Ward was replaced by former Rainbow singer Doogie White. For 2010 the band replaced Brabbs with Voodoo Six drummer, Dave Cavill and released the new Tank albumWar Machine, with this lineup in released in October 2010. For 2011 the band replaced Cavill with heavy metal drummer, Mark Cross.Algy Ward has resurrected his own version of the band, with all tracks on a new album called Breath Of The Pit being "written, played and shouted" by Ward himself

Album:

One name, two different versions, both sides retaining the originality behind the title. Algy Ward, founder of the famous NWOBHM act, TANK, dissolved his partnership with two of his veteran peers in the band, Mick Tucker and Cliff Evans, back in 2007. The end result was two new fronts, both active. The one version a full band of five personas, including Tucker and Evans, while the other is one man project, led Ward. I can’t be sure if there is a struggle between the two of who is the most worthy of the name TANK, but looking forward, it is more TANK for NWOBHM fans. Since working on his own since the breakup from the main venture, Ward’s name was barely heard. Six years later, a booming echo split the airwaves with “Breath Of The Pit”, the hound of war has returned from its long wintery slumber. This debut album came about a year after the other version of TANK, fronted by Doogie White, released its sophomore “War Nation”. The result of what could be ascertained as an ego war between three peoples, unleashed an old fury long awaited to be sprung free. While Tucker and Evans took their TANK a bit forward with their music, while still remaining loyal to domination of the NWOBHM that has been nurturing them, Ward seemed to long for the early past, the rawness and the filth, dust and dirt of previous classics as “Filth Hounds Of Hades”, “This Means War” and “Honour & Blood”. Therefore, “Breath Of The Pit” is a sort of a challenge upon recreating the burning ambitions that led for this great masteries. In terms of overall sound engineering and production, thanks to Ward, Guy Denning and the mastering of Tim Turan, “Breath Of The Pit” had me remembering the once considered freshness of the vintage heaviness, but visceral in comparison to others, of the British sound that commanded the early albums mentioned. On the other hand, heading straight to the material, on this album Ward was on his own and it showed that there things missing. The undying classics of old were made by a foursome crew, including Tucker and Evans being the two guitarists, with Ward being one of the whole unit as vocals and bass. Consequently, “Breath Of The Pit” sounded promising, displaying mainly the basic stuff, merely war themed, heavy as the material written in the past, with Ward presenting fine vocal traits, crude, but practical, bass work and fine riffery that led to several impressive examples of catchy well composed main riffs. However, “Breath Of The Pit” couldn’t seem to race the magnitude of TANK’s earlier albums along with the second version of the band by Tucker and Evans.Ward’ song writing didn’t seem to shine as I would have liked. The album’s foremost solid catchy traditional Metal tracks with a measure of speed, “T-34”, “Stalingrad (Time Is Blood)”, “Crawl Back into Your Hole” and I might even conjure “Breath Of The Pit” with those, retained several old magical riffs that I so longed for to hear from TANK, but when it comes to arrangements, those faltered with being out of reason epic, other than “T-34” that actually hit the spot and repetitive, endorsing the same suffocated formula time and again. Furthermore, “Breath Of The Pit” displaying agonizing drum work, the bass drum beats should be rechecked, probably the cause of bad programming. In time even the raw natured production became too hard to bear. I can understand wish and need for the old school feel, but several of the channel were an unnecessary dose of treble. “Conflict Primeval” appeared as a different number in contrast to the others, but it lost me after two minutes, being less passionate and dull while the instrumental epilogue of “Circle of Willis” portrayed as out of context and monotonous. As a whole, I expected a lot more from “Breath Of The Pit”, Ward has always been one of the reasons of the old TANK’s past achievement, but as it would seem from this debut, there are further bridges to cross and more fires to cause.

Album:

British heavy metal legend Tank return with their tenth studio album, Valley Of Tears, their first album release featuring the vocal talents of former Dragonforce frontman ZP Theart. To complement ZP’s vocals Tank now have one of the best rhythm sections in metal: Bobby Schottkowski, formerly drumming with Sodom and current Blind Guardian member Barend Courbois on bass. Together with Mick Tucker and Cliff Evans on guitars they ready to take another big step forward in the evolution of the band.Evans comments also the recording process: “Bobby (Schottkowski) recorded the drum tracks in Germany with his producer Waldemar Sorychta who's previous work includes albums for Lacuna Coil, Tiamat and Sodom to name but a few. The drums are the backbone of the album and they seriously kick ass! Barend (Courbois) laid down the bass guitar in Holland a couple of days before heading out on a sold out world tour with German metal legends Blind Guardian. He’ll be back with us for our festival shows later this summer. The guitars were recorded in London under the guidance of producer Phil Kinman who is the master at capturing the sound of a Les Paul through a Marshall amp. No frills. Just awesome power! The album will be mastered by Ade Emsley who recently undertook the task of remastering the entire Iron Maiden catalogue for 24 bit iTunes release. They’ll be some teasers coming up over the summer including a video for the title track ‘Valley Of Tears’ and more tour dates will be announced soon.”“Valley Of Tears”, the new album by the British heavy metal legend Tank, has had its release date pushed back to September, 18th from the previously announced June, 8th. Cliff Evans, the band’s guitarist comments the situation in an official statement:“We’ve decided, along with our label Metal Mind, to put the release date for our 10th album ‘Valley of Tears’ back until September 2015. Originally planned for release in June, we now feel that the album really deserves more time and attention during the mixing stage to get it exactly how we want it. Having ZP Theart on vocals has upped our game once again and the attention to detail in the albums production requires more time to get it exactly how we want it. ‘Valley of Tears’ will definitely be worth the wait!”

Album:

Veteran British metallers TANK will release their new album, "Re-Ignition", on April 26 via Cleopatra Records (Rubicon Music in Japan). The LP is a tribute to the early days of TANK and features 11 classic TANK songs chosen from the first four albums which were originally released in the early '80s: "Filth Hounds Of Hades", "Power Of The Hunter", "This Means War" and "Honour And Blood". "Re-Ignition" also features two very special guest appearances. CRADLE OF FILTH frontman Dani Filth and thrash legend Tom Angelripper of SODOM both add their own unique style and energy to this already formidable album.Says TANK guitarist Mick Tucker: "Many of the songs from those classic albums are still present in our live set and we are constantly being asked by our fans if we would ever consider re-recording any of them. Those original recordings are timeless and will always be there but we thought what harm can it do to give them a full metal makeover and inject new life into them. They deserve it!"Adds TANK guitarist Cliff Evans: "We approached U.S. label Cleopatra Records to see if they would be interested in releasing the album. They jumped on it straight away and suggested the possibility of adding some special guests on the album. Maybe some artists who were influenced by TANK back in the '80s. Great idea! We recruited CRADLE OF FILTH frontman Dani Filth to record a version of 'Shellshock' in his own unique style and also German thrash legend Tom Angelripper from SODOM who has taken 'Power Of The Hunter' to another insane level."Tucker and Evans are joined on the album are recent recruits David Readman (PINK CREAM 69) on vocals and Randy Van Der Elsen on bass. Longtime TANK member and former SODOM drummer Bobby Schottkowski occupies the drum throne.Readman replaced former TANK vocalist and one time DRAGONFORCE frontman ZP Theart after he was approached by SKID ROW to join them on a permanent basis. ZP recorded one album during his time with TANK ("Valley Of Tears") which became the band's best-selling album since 1984's "Honour And Blood". Prior to ZP, the vocalist position was taken by former RAINBOW frontman Doogie White who is a member of MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP. His contribution to TANK includes the albums "War Machine" and "War Nation" plus the band's first-ever live DVD ("War Machine Live!").Says Evans: "We've always aimed high when it comes to recruiting new vocalists and musicians and it's always paid off. We're very proud of the albums we've made with Doogie and ZP and now this new album showcases the amazing vocal talent of David Readman."TANK will embark on a run of shows in April 2019 when they'll be visiting Holland, Belgium, Finland, Sweden and also making an appearance in the Ukraine for the first time at the Volume Club in Kiev. A full European tour is scheduled for September/October 2019 along with shows in Japan and South America.

Album:

"War Machine" originally issued in 2010, marked TANK’s first album after eight years. Founding member, bassist and singer Algy Ward, who died way too early in 2023 at the age of only 63, had left the band in 2008. He was replaced by ex-Rainbow vocalist Doogie White. It was guitarists Mick Tucker and Cliff Evans forming the core of the reborn TANK, both members of the band since the mid-80s. They were joined by Chris Dale on bass (who had worked for Bruce Dickinson’s solo band) and Dave Cavill (ex-Zodiac Mindwarp) on drums.Guitarist Cliff Evans talks about the situation of the band back in 2010: “It was around 2003 that Algy had made the decision not to play live shows anymore and became uninterested in the band’s future. He had some health issues to deal with as well. We had no intention of finding a direct replacement for Algy as that would have been impossible, so we planned to bring in a world class vocalist who could really add something to the band in the studio and on stage. Doogie White was our choice.”Stylistically, »War Machine« was indeed a bit of a departure from the earlier TANK stuff, it didn’t sound as ‘street level’ as in the early days. There would have been no point in trying to re-create the sound on those early original albums. So with Doogie White TANK takes here a classic NWOBHM / hard rock path, metallic at places, groovy all over and plenty of melody. The ultimate remastered re-issue of »War Machine« on High Roller Records comes with three bonus tracks: “Dead Man Walking”, a new recording of “Honour And Blood” with Doogie at the mic, and a live version of “Phoenix Rising”.Cliff Evans comments: “I wrote ‘Dead Man Walking’ with Doogie and it was originally more of a demo song than an album track but it has a cool Saxon vibe to it so we thought it would be a great bonus track. ‘Honour And Blood’ is always a great song to play so we’re very happy to make a new recording of this song. The live version of ‘Phoenix Rising’ I think was recorded in Poland in 2012.”Tons of cheers should be given to TANK for preserving their musical integrity for three decades. Through Tank, NWOBHM is alive here. ”War Machine” will make you stumble all through its steel tracks with old groovy riffs, classic solos, and rhythms that never cease.TANK’s melodic nature, even with their rougher edges, is a memoir that should be nailed onto every band that wishes to follow the same direction. Tracks such as the heart-stopping ballad “After All”, NWOBHM classics like “Great Expectations”, and inner-mind meltdowns like “My Insanity” and the heavy barrages of “Judgment Day”, “War Machine”, and “World Without Pity” will deepen the feel.”War Machine” marks three decades of TANK’s Metal career, even if not continuous, and the release still ends up being a great ride.
