Bio:
Formed in 1989 in Germany location Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia.He plays 1986-1988 as Forced Entry, 1988-1989 as The Pakk, 1989-1996 as STS 8 Mission.Forced Entry formed in 1986 with Harry Amthor on vocals, Mike Gare and Rüdiger Blindert on guitar, Achim Meyer on bass and Willi Schwäbig on drums. Their debut album was released in 1988 only on vinyl. It has become a hard-to-find gem for collectors. Shortly after the album came out, the band changed their name due to another “Forced Entry“, a thrash band in San Francisco. First as The Pakk and then released three albums as STS 8 Mission. The Bonn-based band Forced Entry lost their singer following the release of their self-titled album in 1988, as he joined a newly formed band. Shortly afterwards, the bassist also left Forced Entry. Once the two replacements had settled in, the band was set to continue in 1989 with the line-up of Xaver Drexler (vocals), Rüdiger Blinden (guitar), Mike Gare (guitar), Roland Wedel (bass) and Willy Schwäbig (drums). But then a US band came forward claiming the rights to the name Forced Entry. The band was renamed The Pakk, but that name was also ‘taken’. Xaver Drexler shared the band’s deliberations on finding a new name with readers of the fanzine Deadline: ‘We were fed up with changing our name every five minutes. Calling ourselves ‘Bonebreakers’ or ‘Thunderheads’ was too trivial for us.Once [unusual names] become common, they’re normal again.” Rüdiger Blinden brought the name back from his holiday in Florida. He had read a NASA report in which a code designated STS appeared. STS stands for ‘Space Transporting System’. STS 8 is the eighth Space Shuttle mission. The band liked the name, although they actually had ‘Secret Transporting System’ in mind. A logo was designed immediately, which was also approved.During preparations for the LP, Mike Gare left the band because he wanted to take a harder line, whilst the rest of the band wanted to stick with heavy metal with a speed metal edge. Gare, often spelled “Gage”, helped found Jumpin’ Jesus in Cologne. A replacement was found in Thomas Schmitt (guitar, keyboard) from Kiel. The label Atom H Records put pressure on the band due to the delay in finding a replacement. The production of the album was consequently hectic. Blindert described the songs as rushed. Furthermore, they did not have enough material to be able to select from.Problems with the cover design ultimately led to the decision not to use a motif, but simply to feature the band logo filling the entire front of the sleeve, accompanied by the album title The Mystery of Time.Drexler stated that 5,000 copies had been sold in the first four weeks after release.Blindert offered a different assessment: fierce competition from other releases, as well as distribution problems, had caused teething troubles. Overall, however, the sales figures were satisfactory.Shortly after the release of *Mystery of Time*, three of the five musicians left the band for various reasons. Xaver Drexler and Thomas Schmitt remained. Uli Henke (bass) and Rainer Schmitz (drums) joined the band. The follow-up album, *Slippin’ into Fiction*, was produced by Ralph Hubert at Phoenix Studio in Herne and announced by the label Major Records for May 1992. [3] In Japan, the album was released on CD. In the same year, STS 8 Mission went on tour with Chroming Rose and Steelheart.Another change of drummer brought Ulf Borgards into the band. However, this line-up had no record deal, and to avoid standing still, STS 8 Mission self-financed the album Blind. The Japanese market remained interested in the Bonn-based band, and Metal Mania Teichiku took on the album. A tour of Japan fell through due to the label’s bankruptcy. STS 8 Mission disbanded in 1993.Xaver Drexler subsequently sang on several albums for various bands. He died in 2010 at the age of 42.
Album:
Third full-length album in Japan edition with 2 bonus tracks.German heavy/power/hard rock band from Bonn formed in 1989 and disbanded in 1993.Very strong melodic more heavy/power metal album.Very good guitar playing.Think of bands like Stratovarius.Still wonder why these guys never got a worldwide record deal.In 1994, Frank Trojan of Rock Hard identified a typical “German metal touch” in their music. The band insisted they didn’t care for comparisons to, for example, the American power metal band Crimson Glory. On the other hand, they acknowledged that this comparison did demonstrate that their music had an international flair. As their international experience grew, this aspect would naturally become more pronounced.
