Bio:

Human Fortress is a power metal band that strives for an epic feel with their music, calling their music "epic battle metal". The band is from Hanover, Germany. In 1997, guitarists Torsten Wolf and Volker Trost joined with bassist Pablo J. Tammen to form a band called Timezone. Shortly after recording a demo, however, the band split up. Soon thereafter, the lineup was rounded out with singer Jioti Parcharidis, drummer Apostolos "Laki" Zaios, and keyboardist Dirk Marquardt, and called themselves Human Fortress. After recording a demo in 1999, the band got to work on their debut album, which was completed in the summer of 2000. They entered a talent contest sponsored by a popular German metal magazine. Their song "The Dragons Lair" was released on a compilation CD for the contest, and was subsequently voted "Favorite Track" by online fans. Due to this recognition the band reached a deal with Limb Records, and released their debut album Lord of Earth and Heavens Heir.2003 saw the release of the band's second album Defenders of the Crown, this time on Massacre Records. The recording process included guest performances by members of the bands Galloglass, King Leoric, and Meridian Zero. After this album, guitarist Volker Trost left the band and was replaced by Frank Sawade. In 2007, the face of Human Fortress changed once again, as singer Jioti Parcharidis and drummer Apostolos "Laki" Zaios left the band. They were replaced by Carsten Frank and Arndt Krone, respectively. Human Fortress released their third CD, Eternal Empire, on April 25, 2008.Arndt Krone and Torsten Wolf left the band in the same year, the first being replaced by drummer Vincent Gongala. In 2009 the band announced that Frank Sawade, Pablo J. Tammen, Dirk Marquardt and Vincent Gongala would form a new band called Ember Sea with singer Eva Skamira, continuing the new style adopted for the third album, and that the former band members Jioti Parcharidis, Torsten Wolf, Volker Trost and Apostolos "Laki" Zaios, reinforced by newcomers Ingmar von Berg and Dirk Liehm, would continue as Human Fortress in the style of the first two albums.[3] However, singer Jioti Parcharidis left again due to health problems in the beginning of 2010. The band is currently searching for a new singer. In July 2013, following a 5 year hiatus, Human Fortress signed with German Rock and Metal label AFM Records. According to Gus Monsanto, new singer, the band have completed recordings for their upcoming album, which will be released late in 2013.

Album:

After the train wreck that was Eternal Empire, everything was up in the air for Human Fortress. Key member Torsten Wolf tried to keep the show running, and Jioti Parcharidis would even return for a short stint, only to depart for medical reasons and leave Human Fortress again hanging in the balance. Fortunately Torsten along with former members Volker Trost and Apostolos Zaios would enlist the help of new members, including vocalist Gus Monsanto of Revolution Renaissance and Adagio fame, to record their long awaited fourth album – a promised return to the sound of old.Raided Land sees Human Fortress straddling the lines between their past and present, although admittedly lacking some of the charm that albums like Defenders Of The Crown dished out. This notion is for the most part displayed to a good effect, although in places I can't help feel awash with disappointment. No more is this evident than in "Gladiator Of Rome (Part 2)" which feels cheap and unnecessary, almost like they had to prove they were honoring their past. It isn't a bad a song by any stretch, and I can see what they were going for in re-establishing some of the riffing style as well as aiming to give something back to the fans, but I feel it comes off too blatant, and again unnecessary – as with most sequels arriving years after the original product. I hate to go off on such a tangent, but it's a real niggle. The music across the board is for the most part is solid with the musicianship firmly in touch with the straight-up power metal Human Fortress cut their teeth on, with solid layering and development which I guess isn't too far off mid-period Kamelot in utilization. The guitars are certainly a highlight, and I think they offer a little more than would appear on the surface. With some ace nuance throughout, and inspiring melodic lead lines. I do feel the material could do with really picking up and taking off in places, as the approach for the most part is decidedly middling throughout, and at thirteen tracks it can become a little much to trudge through. Fortunately Gus Monsanto's vocals carry the songs well, and with a bit of luck he'll find some security with Human Fortress. The man boasts a quality set of pipes with good range, and an approach that lends from both the pristine and husky schools of melodic singing.Of course Raided Land isn't without flaws, and as I mentioned earlier there is an air of disappointment housed in some of the songs, particularly "Under Siege" which despite being one of the more up-tempo numbers and featuring some cool riffs doesn't really go anywhere. "Pray For Salvation" comes off as a relatively dull ballad, bare around the bones and lacking in excitement, and obviously there's the issue I have with "Gladiator Of Rome (Part 2)". Some of the issues I have in these songs can be chalked down to personal expectation, as I do particularly enjoy the aforementioned Defenders Of The Crown; and in saying that, their first two albums admittedly did take a little longer than expected to click, so who knows how this might hold up to future listens. For now, I'll say that the first half of the album is certainly strongest with good material like "Child Of War" and "The Chosen One", although the closer "Guard The Blind" is rather nifty, and worth sticking around for. It's good to have Human Fortress back and playing good music again, and Raided Land is definitely a sound platform to further build their career. Fans of Kamelot, Civilization One and Masterplan will likely find a solid dose of enjoyment here, and if you loved the early Human Fortress albums I'd say it's worth giving this a shot. Whilst not as majestic as I might have hoped, there's enough on offer to bring me back in for the odd listen, and sees the band in a good position for the future.

Album:

I got to know Human Fortress in the early 2000’s when power metal was in its peak of popularity back in Brazil. For what I can remember, I really liked their debut album, Lord of Earth and Heavens Heir (2001), and this is why I chose to review their new work. And for my absolute surprise I discovered that my fellow countryman, Gus Monsanto (ex- Timo Tolkki's Revolution Renaissance, ex -Adagio), is the band’s new singer since Raided Land (2013). So, let’s quit talking about the past and let me tell what to expect of Thieves of the Night (2016). Amberstow starts the album with a very catchy chorus and from the very first moment it is crystal clear how good Gus Monsanto is. He is undoubtedly the biggest highlight of the entire album. The song got me excited about what would be coming next, but it was also a bit plain and generic enough to make me worried. Nevertheless all of my doubts were gone with Last Prayer to the Lord, probably my favorite song of the album. The huskiness of Monsanto’s voice is excellent during the verses and awesome when he reaches a higher register in the chorus. Rise or Fall is quite like the first track, a good song by itself, but you constantly get the impression of “I heard this before”. The title track, Thieves of the Night, is another excellent song. The riffs, solos, the beat, everything is just classic Power Metal from the good old times. Thrice Blessed is a mid-paced song with a more modern approach, similar to what Kamelot has be doing but without the dark and melancholic atmosphere. I really liked this one. “…Take me away to my better self Welcome to the real world Our shelter from reality Thrice blessed” Call me crazy for saying this but Hellrider is a hair metal song. OK, the chorus is not, but when Monsanto starts singing the verses I can only imagine Bon Jovi in the 80’s. Just A Graze returns to the Power Metal the band is known for, and keeps the overall quality of the album going. This four-song sequence is really awesome. But then we get to Vicious Circle, the less remarkable track here, in my humble opinion. I could hardly remember it as soon as it was finished. Smite On The Anvil is the instrumental song that leads to the second mid-paced song of the album, Dungeons of Doom. Although not so good as Thrice Blessed, it recovers well the feeling of “this is great”. Gift of Prophecy is just better than Vicious Circle, but the power ballad Alone closes the album beautifully. It was nice to find out that, after all these years, a band that I liked in the past but lost contact with is still doing good music. I know I may have been harsher in some parts of this review than what the band deserved, but the truth is, I usually don’t like 9 out of 10 power metal releases that I listen to nowadays, and I really liked this one. So, in the end, it was a pretty positive review. Thieves of the Night is far from perfect, but it is a very solid effort with some amazing moments like Last Prayer to the Lord, Thrice Blessed, the title track, and Hellrider.

Album:

German power metal outfit Human Fortress return with its sixth release Reign Of Gold. “Thunder” is hampered by thin production and is somewhat generic. Things improve on the title track with its driving rhythm compliments of drummer Apostolos Zaios. “Lucifer’s Waltz” is a diabolical number that would incite an unholy dance at a black mass. The metallic bombast is subdued by ominous strings and an unholy choir that creates an unnerving atmosphere for the track’s duration. “Bullet Of Betrayal” is a melodic track with a strong folk influence. The combination of guitar harmonies and lush keyboards provide for a serene musical landscape. “Shine of Light” falls a bit flat with its schmaltzy piano intro and Gus Monsanto’s pastiche vocals. Power metal often falls victim to its own conventions and it is apparent on this track. Things get heavier on “The Blacksmith” with its sharp guitar riffs and double bass drumming and “Martial Valor” which is a mid-tempo rocker with a heart tugging woodwind solo during the track’s midsection. Initial single “Legion Of The Damned” is a fast paced ride through a dark forest with its punk drums and Iron Maidenesque guitar parts. Album closer “Victory” is a galloping rocker with an overarching string arrangement that accentuates the emotional thrill of victory.Reign Of Gold is a mixed bag as it is interesting at times and generic at other times. This lack of consistency mars the experience as Human Fortress can play some serious power metal. However, Reign lacks the heaviness and depth found on other power and symphonic metal records. Tracks like “Martial Valor,” “Lucifer’s Waltz,” and “Victory” are heavy with classical elements that heighten the experience. Unfortunately other tracks lack the drive of the aforementioned songs.Human Fortress has carved a niche in the power metal sub-genre since its formation 20 years ago. However, Reign Of Gold is not a breakout record that would catapult the band to the upper echelons of power metal. There are some solid songs, but not enough to recommend the record to folks. Fans of the band will probably pick it up. However power metal fans may be a little disappointed. Sadly, Reign Of Gold takes the bronze.

Album:

The HUMAN FORTRESS band emerged in Hannover, Germany during 1999 with the song “Dragon’s Lair”. Year 2000 produced the band’s debut release entitled "The Lord Of Earth And Heaven’s Heir"–to be re-released during 2013. Subsequent releases include “Defenders of the Crown" during year 2003–to be re-released during year 2016; "Eternal Empire" during year 2008; "Raided Land" during year 2013; "Thieves of the Night" during year 2016; “Reign of Gold" during year 2019.“The Grimoire” - the album’s initial track, pre-released on Youtube on November 19th 2020, for promotion of the forthcoming January 22 2021 release “Human Tales and Untold Stories” (see the following link). The song opens with keyboards. Guitars enter with a subdued background. The vocals of Gus Monsanto are clear and clean - and through the verses, are accompanied by acoustic guitar. with short bits of electric, mildly distorted rhythm. The refrain uses the main lyrical theme “open the grimoire in crepuscular light / distract their attention to me” (‘crepuscular’ is twilight or dusk).“Disappear In Dark Shadows” - the second album track opens with a short but pithy drum solo– a bit heavier than “The Grimiore”; the heaviness calms for the singing the vocals through the verses. Laki Zaios adds a restrained speed on the double bass drums while the verses are sung, and I enjoy this touch of innovation. “Vain Endeavor” - the third album track opens mildly; the verses progress with scratching distorted guitars together with keyboard harmonies. At about two minutes thirty seconds into the song, the rhythm guitar gets interesting, playing a variation of the main riff. Thus far on the release this track would be the heaviest song on the album.“Free” - the fourth album track begins with extensive keyboards from Dirk Liehn - behind Gus Monsanto’s vocals. Keyboards replicate strings and various orchestral instruments such as flutes or other woodwinds. The only other accompaniment to this ballad are background vocals behind the lead vocals of Gus Monsanto. “Fernweh” - the fifth album track utilizes a slower tempo with leads from the higher guitar strings; a “Hell Chorus” from keyboard background serves as a background through the verses - with short accented scratchy distorted rhythm guitars.“We Are Legion” - (version with vocalist Gus Monsanto) is the sixth album track, and it opens with keyboards nearly resembling a harpsichord. The chorus has an extremely interesting sound combination resembling the harpsichord mixed with a heavier dose of metal rhythm which is accompanied by a Hell Chorus keyboard simulation. Happily we hear Gus Monsanto scream in rage. Distorted rhythm guitars add a welcome bouts of aggression for a melodic lead solo.“Cruel Fantasy” - the seventh album track opens with aggressive rhythm guitars - and thus far seems the heaviest track on the album - almost reminiscent of old MOTLEY CRUE. Keyboards soften the touch for the verses, and then add a subtle counterpoint–especially through the chorus of the song. The opening guitar returns without keyboards just before a melodic guitar solo. The lyrical theme describes “I wish I could just wake up and realize that everything had just been a terrible dream / I wish I could just wake up and realize that everything had just been a “Cruel Fantasy”.“Pray For Salvation” - is a synthesized orchestral version of the song. Opening with a keyboard sound resembling a plucked harp & a picked guitar sting, Dirk Liehn’s keyboards emulate an orchestral section of woodwinds, with a simulated flute sound in the soprano register. The keyboards also resemble an orchestral string section. The lyrical theme involves “Pray or Salvation / Self revelation / Show me the way / To ride out the day / Rise up to paradise / When I Die!”.“The Lord Of Earth And Heaven’s Heir" - the first track of the second disk opens with a keyboard pedal tone while Laki Zaios plays a four measure snare rhythm pattern that repeats for twelve successions (I love this!!!). This endures for less than the first minute. Before the song ends keyboards return to the replicate the harmonium sound - with the bass note utilizing a chromatic escape tone with a lovely harmonic dissonance - nearly reminiscent of a baroque passacaglia–that even Dmitry Shostakovich utilizes in the passacaglia of his second violin concerto.“The Dragon’s Lair” - the second track of the second disk opens to a tempo faster than any of that on the first disk. The drums of Laki Zaios & bass of André Hort push a more furious groove along; still melodic, but with increased aggression. “Defender’s of the Crown” - the third track of the second disk reveals a softening of the pulse from “The Dragon’s Lair”; keyboards again utilize the sound resembling a plucked harp and a picked guitar string- but the aggression returns just prior to the guitar solo.“Border Raid On Lion’s March” - the fourth track of the second disk opens with a keyboard simulated recorder (the baroque folk instrument)–almost reminiscent to the connotation of a European medieval countryside festival–or modern recreation of the same. in lieu of a guitar solo, keyboards re-introduce the same introductory theme–initially resembling a viola then resembling a duet between the viola and a recorder. Before the song finishes guitars play the same introductory theme o the lower, distorted strings of the guitar (I like this!!); keyboards resume this theme in round form as the song fades.“Gladiator of Rome (Part I)” - the fifth track of the second disk - fast punchy rhythm guitars opens this - of course propelled by André Hort & Laki Zaios & on bass & drums respectively–and this sounds wonderful. The groove carries this song. “Gladiator Of Rome (part II)” - the sixth of the second disk opens with similar intensity between the bass, drums and rhythm guitars. Laki Zaios is nearly playing a thrash beat. A simulated Hell Chorus resounds during the verses. The guitar solo is introduced with an unexpected key modulation- and the guitar solo remains melodic - while André Hort & Laki Zaios together with the rhythm guitars sustain the metallic edge.“Wasted Years” - the seventh track of the second disk opens with a simulated “Harmonium” - that instrument used for hundreds of years - almost similar to an organ. This sound is alluring! I have difficulty not humming “The Lick”: which begins on a major third interval - (a solfege equivalent would be of Mi-Do/Mi-Do / Re-Ti/Re-Ti) which then moves to the standard verse chorus structure–which does not last long. Clearly - my favorite tune on this double disk. A splendid resurgence occurs when distorted guitars take the rhythmic motive of the original lick while the respective bass and drums of André Hort & Laki Zaios pound the song out to a thrash beat. I want to throw something. HUMAN FORTRESS is metal after all. I love it.“The Chosen One” - the eighth track of the second disk most interesting moment is before the guitar solo. This seems more like JUDAS PRIEST - but the rhythm section resembles a light thrash behind a speedier modern guitar solo that ends the track. “Dark Knight” - the ninth track of the second disk. A heavier metal tune than earlier parts of especially the first disk, the band seems more of a melodic (light) metal band. More synthesized harmonium introduces a keyboard sound for the song to progress to a thrashy-style tribute to METALLICA’S “One”.“Thieves Of The Night” - the tenth track of the second disk is another fast tune highlighted by André Hort & Laki Zaios; over which, the rhythm guitar for the main lick is a fast distorted right hand string scratch. “Rise Or Fall” - the eleventh track of the second disk opens with a drum lick by Laki Zaios; throughout the song André Hort adds a magnetic pull against the rhythm section - enhancing the groove. The song - especially by the presence of André Hort is similar to an IRON MAIDEN Tune.“Thrice Blessed” - the twelfth track of the second disk is slow but heavier. The guitar chords convey a lovely dissonance that rings a lovely (horrid) distortion. The (rhythm) guitar sounds almost resemble that of MERCYFUL FATE’S “Don’t Break the Oath” release–which is a most unholy sound to re-sound for any and every pious metal head. The guitar picks of Volker Trost & Todd Wolf are now plucking at my heart-strings - as my two hands cover my Valentinian Breast.“Surrender” - the fourteenth track of the second disk opens with a slower thrash style rhythm guitar lick. Laki Zaios doubles his rhythmic attack for the second verse. The guitar solo is reminiscent of the nineteen eighties sounds of IRON MAIDEN. Yet the song ends with an unexpected tribute to MERCYFUL FATE’S “Night of The Unborn”. My heart‘s now a flame as I weep tears of blood. What a wonderful day for a possession! HUMAN FORTRESS professes this album to be their most commercialized release to date–and even advertise this through promotion. Some of the synthesized sounds were absolutely wonderful and simulated musical round forms of the baroque - especially in the “Wasted Years” track. Who wouldn’t raise her honorary fist in reference of our British IRON headed MAIDEN! The unexpected references to MERCYFUL FATE piqued nostalgias & aroused the interests of this lacy veiled lady to sharpen my nails to scratch myself out from this covid coffin. On January 22 2021 - I hope you’ll join me in hearing the “Epic Tales and Untold Stories” of this HUMAN FORTRESS, which of mine I’ll offer unto:

Album:

The epic melodic metal force HUMAN FORTRESS proudly announce the release of their highly anticipated new studio album, “Stronghold”, due out on October 17th, 2025 via Massacre Records. The album will be available as a 2-CD Digipak and as a limited edition vinyl LP.To mark this occasion, the band also unleashes the brand-new single and video “The Abyss Of Our Souls” — a dark and dramatic tale about a sinister figure who sees his true self reflected in a magic mirror, and vows to free the world of his own evil. With its gripping narrative, powerful riffs, and soaring melodies, the song embodies the essence of epic heavy metal storytelling.“Stronghold” marks the band’s 8th full-length album and represents a new chapter in HUMAN FORTRESS’s more than two-decade career. Produced by the band at Soundhoops Studio, with mixing and mastering handled by Alex Krull (Mastersound Studio), the record delivers a heavier, guitar-driven sound, intensified by Krull’s powerful production. With the departure of long-time keyboardist Dirk Liehm, “Stronghold” is the first HUMAN FORTRESS album written largely without keyboards, resulting in a more guitar-heavy and aggressive sound. While some tracks explore more mainstream songwriting elements, the album remains firmly rooted in epic heavy metal, blending powerful riffs, soaring melodies, and thought-provoking lyrics.Over the years, HUMAN FORTRESS have shared stages with the likes of Orden Ogan, Axxis, Skyclad, Wizard, The Grailknights, Poverty’s No Crime, Gallowglass, Mercury Falling, and King Leoric, in addition to performing at festivals such as Wacken Open Air, Metal Inside Festival, and Dominion Festival. With “Stronghold”, HUMAN FORTRESS reaffirm their place as one of Germany’s most respected epic metal institutions, delivering an album that is both timely and timeless.
