Bio:

Vicious Rumors is an American power metal band founded in 1979 in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. The brainchild of Geoff Thorpe, the band has been active on the metal scene since its inception in 1979. Vicious Rumors is recognized for their guitar works and harmonies, as well as the variety of their music.Band leader Thorpe is also known for recording with the American rock & roll band 7th Order, alongside veteran British session guitarist Martin Pugh (of Steamhammer, the 1st Rod Stewart solo album and Armageddon[1]) and drummer Tim Kelliher (of Randy Hansen's Machine Gun[2]) on their debut CD, The Lake of Memory - released in 2007.After a period of relative stability, in 2013 the band still faced more line-up changes around classic members Thorpe and Howe: in the first leg of Electric Punishment European tour Brian Allen was temporary replaced by James Rivera due to serious family matters. In the second leg of European gigs and in the US tour, Slovenian multi-instrumentalist Tilen Hudrap (Thraw, Keller, Wartune) stepped in for Stephen Goodwin on bass and took over the bass duties permanently. Also Thaen Rasmussen left his spot later in the year, with Bob Capka rejoining VR ranks on guitar. During the American tour, surprisingly, young Dutch singer Nick Holleman (Powerized, Methusalem) took care of vocal duties, with Allen stating he and VR parted ways.Entering in the line-up alongside Thorpe, Howe and Capka, Hudrap and later Holleman became the first European official members in Vicious Rumors history, bringing fresh blood to the band before a very intense 2014 which carries VR in no less than three continents: first, Vicious Rumors will co-headline "70,000 Tones of Metal" cruise - where they will play the legendary "Digital Dictator" album in its entirety for the first time in the history of the band - and then, not only many European summer festival gigs but also the long awaited South American and Australia/New Zealand/Japan tours. The band will release a new live album, entitled"Live You To Death 2: American Punishment" in June 2014 (which marks the first official release by the new line-up, consisting of Thorpe, Howe, Hudrap, Capka and Holleman), achieving the goal of four album in four years.

Album:

The third longplayer from Vicious Rumors “Vicious Rumors” will be released once again on CD, this time as a collector's edition.Anyone familiar with US power metal is sure to have encountered Vicious Rumors at some point. After an excellent yet kind of obscure debut album in 1985, the band released what is arguably their masterpiece - 1988's Digital Dictator. As the 1990's came knocking on the door, the band unleashed their third opus: a self-titled album that's possibly the band's most representable album. The album's opener "Don't Wait For Me" kicks off with a big bang. It's arguably the band's most well-known song and for good reason. It's heavy, catchy, and shows some of the band's great guitar prowess. Unlike with the previous album, however, this one quickly drops its pace in favor of some more mid-paced rocking. "World Church" shows a new side of the band where speed isn't a necessity in sounding heavy, and this seems to be the general approach of the entire album. The songs take turns in being fast and mid-paced respectively, with some of the slower numbers also adapting a more melodic sound. The production values of this album are very nice. Everything sounds very crisp and the mix is balanced really well, giving the proper characteristics to each song regardless of its style. The band also sounds great, if perhaps somewhat less energized this time around. On the preceding albums they had more of a "live feeling", whereas this one sounds more tight and perfected in its instrumentation. It's simply a matter of preference but I personally like when things sound more organic. Due to the crisp production and the band's perfect performances, the songs simply don't sound as ballsy as they could've done.Vicious Rumors's third album is a most solid effort in many ways, but it's also one of those typical albums where the band slowly started to go downhill. I've seen and heard people going as far as calling this album "hard rock" throughout the years, but they simply need to get their ears checked out. This is nothing but a more mid-paced take on your average US power metal sound. Sure, the album's more melodic numbers can sometimes be on the borderline towards heavier glam metal, much like other bands such as Fifth Angel, but most power metal bands sound like a cross between thrash and heavy glam if you ask me.If you're a fan of US power metal, late 80's and early 90's thrash, heavier glam metal and classic heavy metal, then I totally recommend you to check this one out. It's not the band's best album but a good starting point nonetheless. If you're only into rapid-speed power metal then you'll probably not find a lot of excitement in this release. Go for the band's earlier albums instead.Check-outs: "Don't Wait For Me", "Hellraiser", "Ship Of Fools", "World Church".

Album:

Okay, hands up. I’ve just broken my Vicious Rumors cherry. There’s just such a wealth of exciting US heavy/power metal bands – both past and present – that I can’t jump into the sack with all of them! As such you’re going to get an unadulterated look into their latest full-length; with out any preconceived notions or bias, I’m calling this one exactly as I hear it.Here Vicious Rumors very much adopt a power/thrash approach which is similar to that of modern Helstar, or Agent Steel. I’ve also detected some serious Testament vibes, particularly in terms of production and tone, and I think The Formation Of Damnation signposted the sound and approach of a lot of these US bands would take. Particularly with that big, chugging rhythm guitar approach, and of course the more flamboyant lead guitars. As such Electric Punishment comes off a very heavy, modern release, and one certainly deserving of its title.Across the board I’d definitely say Vicious Rumors serve up some enjoyable material here, although I haven’t found anything to be too exciting. Very much by the book for the style, I’m sure more clued up fans of the band will find this to be as expected. There certainly isn’t any particular stand out factor to write about, with the guitars being good, yet unspectacular, and Brain Allen’s vocals applying to the same formula. On the whole I think fans of modern power/thrash will find something to enjoy here, although I can’t imagine the album offering much in the way of replay value. As I’ve said the material is enjoyable and solid, although memorable this is not. As my first taste of Vicious Rumors I can’t say I’m all that impressed, although I do owe it to myself to give their eighties albums a shot. For now though, I could take this or leave it.

Line-Up:

San Francisco Bay Area metallers VICIOUS RUMORS have set "Concussion Protocol" as the title of their twelfth studio album, due at the end of August via SPV/Steamhammer. It's the first concept album for the band."Concussion Protocol" was produced by VICIOUS RUMORS guitarist Geoff Thorpe and longtime co-producer and engineer Juan Urteaga at Trident studios (MACHINE HEAD, TESTAMENT, HEATHEN, EXODUS, DRAGONLORD) in Pacheco, California. A video for the first single "Take It Or Leave It" was filmed a couple of months ago and will make its online debut soon. Guest solos by VICIOUS RUMORS brothers from the band's rich history, Brad Gillis (NIGHT RANGER, OZZY OSBOURNE) and Steve Smyth (NEVERMORE, TESTAMENT, FORBIDDEN) only add to the madness.Thorpe states: "The album is relentless and crushing in true, classic VICIOUS RUMORS style but with many twists and turns. Believe me, you're in for a treat, VRazors!!! If you've ever been a fan of VICIOUS RUMORS, SABBATH, PRIEST or MAIDEN and a little Bay Area-style thrash thrown in for good measure, then this album is definitely for you!!! Album:

One of the very first bands I got into as a kid, Vicious Rumors had just lost the legendary Carl Albert at the time and released the good ‘Something Burning’ (1996) with guitarist and leader Geoff Thorpe on vocals. While the USPM monsters have never been the same since Carl Albert tragically passed away in 1995, one year after the release of ‘Word of Mouth’, Thorpe and crew were always consistent in their releases and managed to keep relevant since the 1980s.‘Celebration Decay’ is their 13th full length and shows a return to roots of sorts, mainly a side-effect of the band’s latest tour to celebrate 30 years of the iconic ‘Digital Dictator’ (1988), one of the best power metal albums of all time, in my opinion. The album feels dynamic and energetic, and the going into contact with so many classic tunes from the past did wonders for the Americans, especially to Thorpe’s unique riffing and to newcomer Gunnar Dügrey’s growth. From classic Vicious Rumors approach in songwriting such as “Pulse Of The Dead”, “Arrival Of Desolation”, “Death Eternal” and “Collision Course Disaster” to less orthodox moments like “Darkness Divine” – which is more groovy – the band has successfully rescued a lot of their heydays and added to a more modern sound.Even the less-memorable songs like “Long Way Home” add good value to the record. There may be the occasional passable moment like the aforementioned track, but they never let things get out of hand; for instance, following “Long Way Home” is “Cold Blooded”, a brutal slab of catchy heavy/power metal that is catchy and strong at the same time. The guitar work is nothing short of masterful; the riffs are crunchy and fill the whole speakers, and the solos are inspired. The backup provided by Robin Utbult (bass) is top-notch, but the real star here is Larry Howe, who completely obliterates his drum kit nonstop, even making some passages sound like a power/thrash mix. Nick Courtney was a great addition as well, as he’s able to transition from a more melodic, high-pitched vocal line to harsh, aggressive growls with ease; he’s the best frontman Vicious Rumors had since the legendary James Rivera on ‘Warball’ (2006).It’s clear to me that Geoff Thorpe and the team have given a lot of thought into making the best possible effort they could. This feels organic, powerful, and, most importantly, feels like Vicious Rumors. Easily their best album since 2006, ‘Celebration Decay’ is an ode to the best days of USPM with a little touch of the modern style, and will definitely please every metalhead who hears it. Highly recommended.

Album:

It’s been five years since U.S. veteran band VICIOUS RUMORS unleashed their last album. Five years during which band mastermind Geoff Thorpe and his crew played well over one hundred and fifty shows, presenting their longstanding career in condensed form and performing a playlist featuring their most important VICIOUS RUMORS classics. These shows have left their mark on the band members while at the same time releasing a burst of new energy. Both these factors clearly influenced on their upcoming new album ‘‘The Devil’s Asylum”, which Thorpe aptly summarises, saying: “‘The Devil’s Asylum’ sees us return to our roots, which we’ve combined with contemporary influences.”Indeed, ”The Devil’s Asylum” brings back the Eighties VICIOUS RUMORS we love updated with a modern sound and current production design, showcasing how relevant the band still is, and how innovative was decades ago.
