Year : 2014
Style : Heavy Metal
Country : Sweden
Audio : 320 kbps + all scans
Size : 118 mb

Bio:

Starblind was formed in early spring 2013 by ex members of Danger, Steel Attack, The Backbones, Equify and Sadauk...From the start our vision has been to play melodic heavy metal carrying the legacy of the NWOBHM. This is accomplished by the merging of the top quality musicians that all share the same passion for music and sharing the same influences.

Album:

Mike Steel Starblind Sweden Heavy Metal...Sweden has done it yet again. Upholding one of the world's most flourishing underground metal scenes, Sweden has constantly been releasing quality records since the 80s. I don't know if it's directly linked to their vibrant culture, or the air that they breathe, but man can they ever write some classic heavy metal! With that being said, I introduce you dudes to Sweden's next rising band, Starblind. Proudly brewing a sound that attempts to carry the legacy of the NWOBHM forward, Starblind's "Darkest Horrors" is ready to take the world by storm!Just when I thought I pretty much had Starblind figured out through their teaser tracks, they go ahead and exceed my expectations once again. First of all, the record is very consistent in terms of songwriting and lengthiness. Starblind's incredible ability to create melodies allows nothing but pure enjoyment to be experienced throughout. Most of this I believe is due to Mike Steel's over-empowering (and almost overwhelming) voice that continues to exceed its limitations on every track. His vocal styles are exactly what makes these talented guys so original, whereby the production only further accentuates the melodies and screams he can effortlessly pull off. A good example to really support this statement is the mighty title track; here, Mike is constantly shifting his vocal tones throughout the track and manages to hit some of the highest notes I've heard in awhile, all while managing to make the hairs in the back of my head stand up. This same transition is also heard on "Crystal Tears", which showcases this same tonal shift, but through a slower progression. Only but my utmost respect goes to this man.In terms of the overall songs featured on the record, I almost never experienced a moment that I didn't fully enjoy. The guitars are always feeding back leads and melodic riffs that completely immerse you inside the heavy metal universe. You can immediately tell how much of an influence Iron Maiden was to these guys once you break down the writing process of every guitar lead; the guitarists are absolutely obsessed with harmonies and proudly flaunt it on every song. I mean who the hell doesn't love harmonizing guitar solos à la Iron Maiden and Judas Priest? I thought so. The album also reaches new heights with the overly compelling "The Reckoning", which is nothing short of a heavy metal anthem; everything from the calming intro to the overdriven guitar leads, to the fist-pounding chorus...this track is a traditional heavy metal fan's heaven. What I found really interesting was the way in which the tracks are set up to progressively outshine the other, eventually leading to an ultimate climax. As a whole, this allowed for a much more satisfactory experience. With regards to this, the final song on the record, entitled "The Temple of Set", takes you on a journey like never before. Clocking in at almost 9 minutes, it's almost hard not to be amazed by the amount of riffs this one track contains, especially during the breakdown at the end. There is always something new and unexpected waiting to happen when experiencing "The Temple of Set" for the first time, and its careful progression eventually leads to the album's climax. What a way to end the album. All in all, I couldn't have asked for a better record from such a talented band. Starblind sure as hell deserve anything and everything good that will come their way, and I wish them nothing but the best. I'm still coming to terms with the fact that this is their very first release...

Album:

Following the brand new signing of STARBLIND with Pure Steel Records in March 2015, STARBLINDS sophomore album "Dying Son" is soon to be unleashed upon the world, following up their album debut "Darkest Horrors" from 2014. Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden; STARBLIND are here to deliver traditional Heavy Metal as if time had stood still since 1984.Their music can be described as catchy Heavy Metal with majestic twin guitar leads, pumping bass guitar, dynamic drums and melodic, powerful vocals. No attempts has been done to hide the influences when writing the material to "Dying Son". And it stands clear that the metal giants from Great Britain are the main ones."Dying Son" contains everything from fast songs like "The Lighthouse" and "A Dying Son", to mid-tempo "Firestone" and "Sacrifice", to the 11 ½ minute opus "The Land of Seven Rivers Beyond the Sea".STARBLINDs sophomore album "Dying Son" have been recorded live in the studio and is produced by Rocka Rollas/Blazon Stone mastermind Cedrick Forsberg. Because of the philosophy of no guitar dubbing, no triggers and no metronome when recording, the album has a very authentic and organic feel. What you get on the album, is what you get live!To the fans of 80 ́s metal and of the "New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal", this is a record you cannot miss!

Album:

Sweden's Starblind returns with a third studio Never Seen Again, and introduces a new singer, Marcus Sannefjord Olkerud (Ex-Rocka Rollas). Starblind also returns to channel the spirit of early Iron Maiden, more specifically that era around Piece Of Mind and Powerslave. So essentially, excepting a change of vocalist, there's nothing new under the sun with Starblind. Actually, you could read my review of Dying Son, then merely swap out the name of the vocalist, pick a few choice new songs from this album, and you'd have a summary of Never Seen Again. But let me break it down, just in case you don't want to take the lazy man's way out.Essentially, the strength of Starblind comes in their music. Their elemental strengths are twin guitar harmony, abundance of killer metal guitar solos, the galloping pace, and the simple fact that, when these things are combined, the arrangements sound epic. Starblind knows "keep it true" heavy metal and plays it with enthusiasm and precision. And for better or worse, depending on how much you worship the almighty Maiden, they do sound like that seminal NWoBHM band. The wild card once more is the new vocalist. Not unlike his predecessor, Olkerud also sings clean and melodic, his voice tuned to the melody and harmony of the arrangement, and he can go screamo too. In the former case, Olkerud is steady and reasonable, especially in songs with lighter parts such as Eternally Bound. In the screamo scenario, he's not necessarily out of control, but definitely harder to understand. If he's trying to sound like Bruce Dickinson, I don't really care. I never that Bruce was the greatest vocalist anyway. (Stop your grumbling at that comment.) Mostly Olkerud can be easily overwhelmed by the music, with the mix and mastering not doing him any favors.Basically, the bottom line for me was simple: I really like Starblind's interpretation of Maiden-inspired traditional heavy metal, especially loving the guitar work. After that, I merely forbear with the vocals. As for the songs, like I said earlier, they're all pretty epic and entertaining with favorites being The Everlasting Dream of Flight, The Last Stand, Never Seen Again, and the aforementioned Eternally Bound.

Line-Up:

Album:

Heavy metal will never die! Especially when fueled by the rich tinder of musicians: whiskey, beer, and headbanging. Swedish STARBLIND are pure heavy metal spirit distilled into a five piece ensemble, each member infused with the essence of the legends of metal past. Formed in 2013, STARBLIND performed and recorded their first album live, “Darkest Horrors”. In their view, this was the only true way to obtain the best possible record to highlight their melodic throwback sound. Since then, they have released two more albums, “Dying Son” and “Never Seen Again”. Referencing classic heavy metal icons like JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN, and MANOWAR, STARBLIND carries the torch of twin guitar, clean, and shred-y metal with their newest album “Black Bubbling Ooze”.First off, I would like to highlight that not many album titles have put a smile on my face as easily as STARBLIND’s “Black Bubbling Ooze”. As a metal fan, over time, you learn to appreciate the serious as well as the silly. And in a moment like this, recognize that the band is actually delivering a bit of both. This is highlighted by an ominous album cover; a lone flag bearer stands watch on a worn brick barrier, gazing out towards a blackened storm over the ocean. Fantastic imagery to establish the tone for this album, which contrasts bright, heavy metal against dark themes.“One Of Us” gets going with a scratchy, amped up guitar riff that leads in the rest of the band. Vocalist Marcus S. Olkerud has a great vocal range, and while he relies mostly on classic heavy metal falsetto in most songs, he incorporates the low end often. This song, in particular, has a nice slow down right before the chorus. Only the bass, drums, and Olkerud’s low chant ring through, before the speed kicks back in and we reach the chorus, which is an upbeat, moving melody. Very reminiscent of early IRON MAIDEN in the song structure.“At The Mountain Of Madness” is up next and, for me, is essentially the title track. It’s also one of the best overall songs on the album. The opening is epic, a quick guitar and bass line that builds, layers adding on, before Olkerud belts out a killer wail. Zakarias Wikner on drums holds nothing back with a breakneck beat that adds to the frantic ambiance of the song. Once they reach the chorus, the pace slows down slightly, but deliberately, as Olkerud utters the lyrics, “Black Bubbling Ooze”. His voice drips with velvety oil as he utters those words. They repeat this pattern a few times before guitarists Björn Rosenblad and Johan 'J.J.' Jonasson take turns ripping through solos. Altogether, the song works to really set the listener into a specific position in the story for the album.Another great song on the album is “Room 101”. While it starts off with a more straightforward musical opening, the chorus section is extremely catchy. Long sustained notes and sustained harmonies for me often have that earworm effect. I also like that it’s not too busy. The guitars are holding chords, Olkerud and the vocals are layered and melodic. Then there’s Wikner on drums and Daniel Tillberg on bass going wild. I appreciate the low end being so active as it gives a fun break from the normal shredding that happens so often in classic heavy metal. There really is not a bad song on “Black Bubbling Ooze”. Coming in at around 35 minutes with 8 songs, the album is a short, frantic affair that never really slows down. “Crystal Tears” is the closest to a ballad, and even that song has a truly powerful chorus. I appreciate the production decisions made by STARBLIND as well. Each song is extremely clean and articulate with minimal distortion except when they want to rip it open. But there is a rawness to it that instantly puts you in the headspace of the iconic metal bands from the 70s and 80s. Well worth a listen!
