Kattah Brazilian band, formed in 2006 by Roni Sauaf, Victor Brochard and Cristian Alex. The name, created by vocalist Roni Sauaf, based on their idea of mixing arabian elements with Heavy Metal, is a character that portrays the way of being of people, the reality of illusions. Besides the union with Eastern music, the use of Brazilian rhythms and influences from other musical styles have always been common to the members of the band, leading Kattah to perform a unique cultural mix, defining the uniqueness of the group. These were advantages that attracted the attention of various music producers from the beginning of their career, being chosen for the first album the producer F. Quesada.After the release of the album Eyes Of Sand, the band Angra put Kattah supporting their european tour 2011 and was the first time that they put a brazilian band with them. The result was splendid, the name Kattah had a great repercussion in Europe and countries around the world and also it was considered by many reviews, criticisms and comments, the birth of a great promise for the Heavy Metal world. Cicero Chagas joined the group as the bassist after some testing and training and the current line up is defined by: Roni Sauaf (Lead Vocals), Victor Brochard (Guitars), Cicero Chagas (Bass) and Cristian Alex (Drums). The great friendship and willingness to play their favorite songs together were the reasons that unite the members of Kattah in order to have the best performance required to make art a musical show. Nowadays Kattah is almost releasing the new album Lapis Lazuli, which was produced by Roy Z , known for successful works with Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, Sepultura, Helloween and many other renowned artists. Also was engineered and produced by Andy Haller known for works with Ozzy, System of a Down, Boys to men and many others.

The Brazilian band, KATTAH, hailing from Curitiba, have just signed a deal with the prime Italian label Baker Team/Scarlet Records for the future release of their second effort that should be out in late October.I saw the band live in support of ANGRA for their 2011 European tour, and I was totally mesmerised by their energetic performance and by the superb coherency of this young gang, since then i'm proud to call myself a fan!Titled weirdly, "Lapis Lazuli", the sophomore album is following the same recipe that made the debut "Eyes of sand" a great success. With an intelligent mix of Traditional Heavy Metal ("Inside My Head"), a few Melodic Power Metal touches ("Apocalypse") updated with unexpected colors, dark atmospheres ("Alpha Centaury") and tribal rhythms borrowed from the Arabian ("The Hidden Voice"), Eastern European, Brazilian ("Lapis Lazuli"/"A Capoeira") and many other folkloric details. With the obvious talent of amazing lead singer Roni Sauaf as their strongest asset and the most impressive aspect: An ever present pinnacle element!Indeed, beside his great vocal range, his fierce tone, proudly similar with the Bruce Dickinson/Michael Kiske/Geoff Tate's legendary style, vocalist Roni Sauaf holds an incredible polyvalency, a pristine sensibility ("You Will Never Be Dead") and his skill for composition are in a perfect combination with his singing organ, in order to makes him a future hope in the realm of the Metal voice.The album is filled with a rarely seen diversity, yet it's still holding a certain density in the songwriting which is keeping the unity, a real noblesse in the headbanging pep ("Vetus Espiritus") and a courageous experimentations ("Land of God"), a few Prog interactions in the structures ("Behind The Clay") while maintaining a typical efficiency with a sharp riffage mania and a pure Metal spirit ("Rebirth Of Pharaohs")!The closing cut, "Last Chance", is a future anthem for KATTAH, maybe the most accesible song of the whole album, the piano intro lead to a sing along chorus with as always a fantastic interpretation by Roni.Fifty four minutes of Metallic celebration, an invitation to share the universe of KATTAH, where you can recognize many parameters from the great ones:CRIMSON GLORY / LETHAL / METAL CHURCH / ANGRA / SAVATAGE or AVANTASIA and of course IRON MAIDEN.The CD was produced by a great team of producers with worldwide acclaim and even winner of a Grammy, respectively Roy Z (BRUCE DICKINSON / YNGWIE J. MALMSTEEN / JUDAS PRIEST / HELLOWEEN / SEBASTIAN BACH) and Andy Haller, who have worked with artists like OZZY / SANTANA and SYSTEM OF A DOWN and of course the sound is powerful and helps clearly the band to reach another stage in their unstoppable ascencion to stardom.I always believed in a hypothetical savior of the Metal cause provided by the new world someday ... Debut album.Not wasting any time here – if you don’t like Middle Eastern rhythms in your metal, Kattah won’t be for you. You get bands who build the odd song around that trick, but while Kattah don’t quite go the whole hog and fill the CD with it from beginning to end, this Arabian-influenced progressive/power metal debut has more than its fair share.In fairness, ‘Eyes of sand’ is actually a fairly varied CD, and the zigzagging Middle Eastern parts are something akin to a recurring motif that ties the whole thing together rather than a be-all-end-all type of thing. While on the whole it is a fairly promising debut with some enjoyable songs, it is hampered by a series of annoying niggles that devalue the experience somewhat.Vocalist Roni Sauaf is a bit perplexing, as he is the owner of a rather powerful set of pipes, but is rather guilty of over-singing and often it is an irksome distraction to the music. On occasion he sounds somewhat like a roughed-up Andre Matos (Brazilian progressive/power band in influenced by Angra shocker!), but his main influence seems to be the master of over-emoting himself, Tobias Sammet, and he imitates some of the little German’s melodramatic mannerisms a little too closely and it is to the detriment of the overall product.While the general style of the songs is more a progressive-influenced power metal sound, the 4 main musicians definitely put in what you could call prog performances, syncopated drumming and juddering midtempo riffs making up much of the body of the CD. The bass is unusually far out in the front of the mix, and on the opening title track it even sets the false impression that it will crush the guitars out of sight for the duration, but things thankfully level out a little after that and Jean Buzzello’s fluid, intricate playing can be enjoyed without it being at the expense of anything else.Keyboards, performed by a studio musician, are a steady background presence that come and go as required and thankfully don’t clutter things up in the mix even further. Generally used to create extra textures for the more overly Arabian-style songs, there are nonetheless a few stand-out moments, such as the soothing piano on the calm “This fire” or the brief, slow solo that crops up on the instrumental closing track (at least, before the needless single edit kicks in).There are a couple of songs that display a bit more of a carefree and straightforward power metal attitude, though the vocal melodies on the galloping “Deep feelings” are, to be honest, a little commercial and even dangerously (whisper it) pop punk/emo-sounding. “Groupies” fairs a little better and opens on a nice traditional metal riff that stands out from the pack for all its brashness, before the huge “Lebanese aura”, the most intrinsically Middle Eastern track of the lot, goes in completely the opposite direction. Its long, long intro builds suitable tension before the winding main body of the song leads to a dominant chorus and a protracted instrumental closing section where the tempo is suddenly jacked up to allow the drums to thunder and the guitarists to solo like crazy.At time it feels like the Middle Eastern sections overwhelm the rest of the songs, while at others they appear to be the strongest parts of the CD and a welcome presence next to other, less distinguished moments and this is of course indicative of an uneven debut. Kattah certainly have their charms, but on the other hand aren’t even close to being the finished article. Taken for what it is though, ‘Eyes of sand’ is a fairly enjoyable listen.
