Country : Belgium

Bio:

The name Acid may not be worthy of more than a minuscule footnote in rock history, but to many heavy metal experts, this little-known band remains one of Belgium's best-ever exports. Formed circa 1980 in the Belgian town of Brugge and initially calling themselves Previous Page, Acid was among the first European bands to emerge in the wake of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (hence the necessary name change). Comprising guitarists Demon and Dizzy Lizzy; bassist T-Bone; drummer Anvil; and charismatic, leather-loving singer/dominatrix Kate de Lombaerd, the quintet soon evolved from a gritty but conventional heavy metal band into a proto-thrash unit heavily inspired by the likes of Venom and Raven. Come July 1982, Acid was ready to take on the world (or at least the Benelux region) and issued their debut single, "Hell on Wheels," through Roadrunner Records; but a long-term deal was not forthcoming, so they simply took matters into their own hands.Maniac Unleashed in January 1983 through the band's own Giant imprint, their eponymous first album was the raucous embodiment of kids going crazy. Its embryonic speed metal and forced-but-fun faux-satanic lyrics did little more than mimic their cross-channel heroes (often with hysterical results), but, at the same time, was all the more special because of its very shortcomings. A sophomore effort called Maniac followed a year later and replicated its predecessor's every move, including the part involving utter commercial failure. Still, the band pressed on, with 1985's Engine Beast and, following a long hiatus, 1989's Don't Lose Your Temper, before finally throwing in the towel. Not exactly a stellar career run by commercial standards, but one which has ensured that Acid's small yet combustible contribution to the development of heavy metal should remain a fond memory of those who were there.

Album:

Audio restoration and mastering by Patrick W. Engel at TEMPLE OF DISHARMONY in March 2019.Just a few months after their initial full-length “Acid” in 1983, Belgium’s finest of the same name churned out a record that perfectly blended their debut’s spontaneous energy with the subtlety of a well-practised band at the height of its powers.“Maniac” is Acid’s key work without any doubt and belongs to the canon of early extreme metal, with genuine classics such as swaggering opener ‘Max Overload,’ the satanic romp of ‘Black Car’ or the rhythmically complex closer ‘Bottoms Up’ and, of course, ‘Lucifera’ as the group’s unofficial anthem. The Bruges-based troupe, led by drum dervish Anvill and one-of-a-kind front woman Kate de Lombaert, were able to combine the spirit of punk and rock ’n’ roll with a degree of precision that antedated thrash as we know it today, thus becoming a much-revered name within the international underground. As such, the album is the proverbial “all killer, no filler” affair, giving the likes of Black Sabbath, Motörhead and Venom – all of which shared stages with Acid – a hard time wherever the band played live … and will do so again. Right on time for Acid’s first reunion performance at Keep It True Festival 2020 in Germany, High Roller represses “Maniac” together with its pre- and successors. The four tracks from the 1984 EP “Black Car” serve as bonus for both the CD and LP versions, added to the latter on a seprate 7” with with picture sleeve while the album proper comes in different colours, housed in 425g cardboard with lyric insert and poster. Patrick W. Engel restored and mastered the best lossless audio sources available at Temple of Disharmony, the LPs were cut at SST Germany on Neumann machines for optimal quality on all levels.

Album:

Cherry Red Records and their specialized reissue label Hear No Evil are resurrecting really lovely bands, and now it's the time for the remastering of ACID three albums. Some kind of an underground metal classic, their 3rd and last record "Engine Beast" always has been a personal favorite.Probably every town has some awesome band the rest of the world will never see. These days, thanks to the Internet it’s easier for, let's say, some Oklahoma indie band to reach listeners in Japan, but back in 1980, forget it. Victims, perhaps, of the glut of metal bands from all over Europe and the UK, ACID fell through the cracks. There wasn’t a huge metal scene in their native Belgium when they formed, and little in the way of avenues out of the country. So they formed their own record label, Giant, and between 1980 and 1985, when they broke up, released three solid albums. The three albums, 'Acid', 'Maniac', and this "Engine Beast" are united by themes of sex, cars, metal... and Satan. Their musical style was firmly rooted in the NWOBHM, with some speed & hard 'n heavy. But Acid had something special: Kate De Lombaert for a vocalist. De Lombaert had an amazing voice and she sang in English with her Belgium accent. This gave Acid’s dark material an unexpected pop edge, which enhances every track. And this is specially notorious on this "Engine Beast": while the to previous records were all uptempo and really heavy, this one adds much more melody according to the era (mid-Eighties) and certain hard rock groove.I still remember my teen years listening alot of AOR bands (my favorite genre) but also I got a metal heart, and ACID was one of those 'rebel' acts to me, specially this "Engine Beast". You know, this band toured with all major names from the '80s heavy metal wave, but they never lose their 'underground, street metal feel'. And there's where resides Acid's appeal.Cherry Red Records and HNE Recordings deserve a round of drinks for rescuing these three underground gems from the dustbin of history. Fans of classic metal will definitely want to add these remastered reissues to their library.

Album:

Audio restoration and mastering by Patrick W. Engel at TEMPLE OF DISHARMONY in March 2019.When Acid put out their third and final record in 1985, internal tensions had already started to destabilize the line-up, yet this did not mean that “Engine Beast” was a half-baked affair. If anything, it is the thrash pioneers’ most refined and, if one daresay so, “polished” effort, the main reason probably being the mix by renowned Dutch sound engineer Erwin Musper, who would later work on stadium rock successes such as Def Leppard’s “Hysteria” or Scorpion’s “Crazy World.” Nevertheless, skinsman Geert “Anvill” Ricquier and vocalist Kate de Lombaert, forever the group’s core duo, alternately sounded like a feminine Accept at their beefiest and many of the thrash acts they not only preceded but also significantly inspired. Thanks to their more sophisticated writing skills and a general increase in melody, the front woman‘s versatile voice shines even more, suggesting something akin to Warlock‘s Doro Pesch on steroids in oustanding tunes such as the sprightly ‚Warriors Of The Dark‘ or the inventive ‘Big Ben,’ which celebrates metal as a genre with the signature bell stroke of London’s Palace of Westminster.Since Acid are now set to resume live activities almost 25 years after their premature exitus, High Roller reissue their back catalogue, including “Engine Beast” as one set with the 1983 “Lucifera / Rats” single on CD and LP respectively. As for the vinyl edition, the extra tracks come on a separate 7” with picture sleeve whereas the album itself is available in different colours, all in 425g cardboard with lyric insert and poster. Patrick W. Engel restored and mastered the best lossless audio sources available at Temple of Disharmony, the LPs were cut at SST Germany on Neumann machines for optimal quality on all levels.

Not exactly a stellar career run by commercial standards, but one which has ensured that Acid's small yet combustible contribution to the development of heavy metal should remain a fond memory of those who were there.

Album:

The one and only Acid, formed in Bruges in 1980 (and initially called Precious Page), are widely considered to be one of the very first speed metal bands on the European continent. Lead vocalist Kate de Lombaert, guitarists Dirk Simoens (Dizzy Lizzy) and Donald Devers (Demon), bassist Peter (T-Bone) and drummer Geert (Anvill) recorded three highly regarded albums for Giant Records – »Acid« (1983), »Maniac« (also 1983) and »Engine Beast« (1985) – before breaking up sometime in the mid-80s.In 2019, Kate de Lombaert decided to resurrect the band and eventually got together with Mathieu Trobec (bass), Gilles Reuse (guitar), Andreas Stieglitz (guitar) and Bastiaan Andriessen (drums) under the name of Kate’s Acid. They appeared live at Keep It True Rising in 2021 and once again at Keep It True in 2023, where a live album was recorded. A year later, »Blowing Your Ears Off« was released on High Roller Records to great critical.»Hellbender« is the name of the first studio album by the newly formed Kate’s Acid, featuring nine brand-new compositions. The new line-up of the band consists of guitarist Geert Annys, drummer Ash and Camilo (Thunder Screamer) Ortega, from Columbia, who is active in the band Axe Steeler and supplied most of the bass parts, with Kate handling the vocals, of course. The recordings were done in Belgium and Colombia and the mix in Germany (Berlin) in the studio of Jacky Lehmann.“I wanted to make a new studio album for a very long time, but did not find the right musicians,” comments the legendary singer on the evolution of »Hellbender«. “It was time for me to break the silence. In my opinion, this new album is full of great songs, and I like to share them with old-time fans and new, enthusiastic rockers. To my ears, it still sounds like old-school metal.”»Hellbender« is indeed full of great songs, like the speedy “The Lightning Conductor”, a biker anthem named “Riding Out” and of course “Do Not Burn The Witch” (naturally, no relation to the Venom tune of the same name on »Black Metal«), making it a natural contender for the legitimate successor to »Maniac«.And there is also a first on the album, the epic “Air Raid”, kind of a ballad … “Well, for everything there has to be a first time,” laughs the legendary Kate. “So why not a ballad? If you listen to the song, you can almost feel the pain and destruction of what currently happens all over the world.”
