Bio:

The foundation of Mystery Blue dates back to 1982 by the guitarist Frenzy Philippon, shortly after which the band quickly became a household name in the world of Heavy Metal as a result of the release of two successful albums, the eponymous debut LP “Mystery Blue” (via Axe Killer Records), followed by “Circle Of Shame” (via Dream Records/CBS).Throughout their years of relentless touring, the band have graced the stage alongside legends and big guns such as Motörhead, Def Leppard, Saxon, Vengeance, and their fellow countrymen H-Bomb and Satan Jokers amongst many others, which came to a close as they went on hiatus at the end of the 80s.In 1996, guitarist and founder Frenzy reformed Mystery Blue with the exceptional vocalist Nathalie Geyer, shortly followed by releasing their third album “Spirit Of Your Song”. In 1998 they recruited Vince Koehler on drums who will soon become more than just a fantastic powerful drummer for the band, the hard core of Mystery Blue was born! Besides Frenzy, Nathalie and Vince, Mystery Blue is today composed of Sylvain Ebersoldt on second guitar and Florian Trug on bass.Since their reformation, Mystery Blue have powered through Europe opening for bands such as Girlschool, David DeFeis -Virgin Steele, Powerwolf, Rebellion, Paragon, Rockbitch, Primordial, Wolf, Freedom Call, ADX, Heathen, Nightmare and Destruction, as well as having played at big festivals such as the Headbangers Open Air, Swordbrothers, Saarbanger Metal Fest, Feuerfänger Festival, Metal Forces Festival in Germany, the Tilburg Headbangers Fest in Holland, the Dark & Green Metal Fest in Spain, the Underwall in Croatia and of course the Hellfest and the Paris Metal France festival. In parallel, the musicians of Mystery Blue keep on honing their song-writing talents, striving for each new album to be an artistic improvement and a decisive step forward in comparison to the previous effort. They certainly achieved this goal with the release of “Metal Slaves” (Steelheart Records) in 2004, an album that was lauded by critics and Classic-Metal aficionados alike, and have enjoyed brisk sales. In 2006 the band signed with Mausoleum Records for the album “Claws Of Steel” produced by Achim Köhler (Brainstorm, Amon Amarth, Primal Fear). In 2009, with the same producer, “Hell & Fury” was released via Bernett Records. In 2012 the musicians returned to the studio to record their 7th album “Conquer The World” produced by Uwe Lulis (Accept, Grave Digger, Rebellion). In 2015, as a special treat for their true fans, Mystery Blue released a collector DVD with live extracts and video clips retracing the band’s history under the name “A Journey Through Time – 30 Years in Metal”.After many years of touring, and some incredible festival & show appearances under their belt, Mystery Blue have released in 2016 their first live album “Live… Made in Europe” including a bonus DVD and last October they had the great pleasure and honour to tour UK and Europe with the Canadian legends ANVIL taking on board a whole lot of new fans thanks to the successful shows!Inspired by their numerous live appearances, the band has just recorded its new studio album to be released this summer by the legenday Metal label MASSACRE Records……Today True Metal doesn’t get any better than MYSTERY BLUE. Get ready to bleed!

Album:

I had the opportunity to take a closer look on work of the Heavy Metal band MYSTERY BLUE from France. This French quartet consists of the female singer Nathalie Geyer, guitarist Frenzy Philippon, bassist Matt Gabnai and drummer Vince Koehler. "Conquer The World" was released just at the end of 2012 and this is their seventh studio album. The surprising thing is that this band has been running since 1982 with Frenzy Philippon as the sole founder left in the lineup. The titled track "Conquer The World" has in it fast and well played drums tight with the bass along with melodic guitars charged up for battle.Geyer's vocals sound really nice on chorus, which is melodic and memorable. This is my favorite song of the entire tracklist. Also I recommend "Ticket To Hell" that begins with pulsate drums and strong guitars. For some reason that title of the track reminded me of the AC/DC hit"Highway to Hell", but these massive guitars and memorable melodic chorus retold of why Heavy Metal is the most beautiful of all. Geyer proves that her voice is nice to listen to.The hard guitars and very harmonious chorus is on display on "Cruel Obession" are amazing. Elements of JUDAS PRIEST and and high pitched PRIMAL FEAR shrieks are also evident. Melodious sound of pure Heavy Metal is also showcased on "Innocent Crime". Biting guitars and great working rhythm unit of drums & bass provides power to "Evil Spell".Andreas Babuschkin of PARAGON is special guest vocals on the energetic "Running With The Pack". His singing with Geyer on chorus certainly adds a piece of power and claw. The rawness of the chorus reminded me songs of PRIMAL FEAR. Also there were moments where the bass and drums during the songs appeared to be of IRON MAIDEN origin.MYSTERY BLUE made beautiful ballad called "Keep On Dreaming" where you can find a piano and then gentler sound of drums, bass & guitars. Everything created a mood of an excellent classic ballad along with the amazing vocals. They won't allow to forget that they are playing definitive Heavy Metal. Strong guitars with machine gun drumming that will prompt about that very well. Bonus track on album is song "Accroche-Toi À Tes Reves",which is nice surprise for fans. Also there is the French version ballad "Keep On Dreaming". The same music, but I prefer it in English as it the singing rhythms played out way better.Voices of little child and a howling wolf are listenable on "Behind Those Walls". There is also a great guitar solo. Fantastic guitars and drums is in the longest track of the album, lasts over 6 minutes "Guardian Angel". This soother song is characterized by memorable refrain singing cool and guitar solo that entranced my senses. "Road Of Despair", a bit Thrashywithmachine drumming along with bombastic guitars attacked right after the softer notes of the earlier ballad. The musician are very good and their experience is evident aside to their vast efforts on this album. Thanks to their way of playing, it is easy to see that everything was thought out. I really liked this journey with them.MYSTERY BLUE can kick your ass & also catch your heart. "Conquer The World" is great album with a strong sound and well played compositions. Every Metalhead who likes this style of playing JUDAS PRIEST or PRIMAL FEAR will enjoy album of French heavymetalers. Surely MYSTERY BLUE at the forefront with female Nathalie Geyer will conquer your heart & soul.

Album:

France’s long-running, female-fronted classic metal band Mystery Blue have released their eighth album after a seven-year break from their previous. 8RED (which I can only assume is a play on the word “hatred”, and also maybe on the “Blue” of the band name) was promised to be “a collection of unforgettable metal hymns and in-your-face rippers, alongside epic, original and melodic pieces”, but it falls short on all counts. There are no rippers. It’s all but epic, and, for anybody who’s been around heavy metal for any amount of time, it’s not original, either. It is, in a word, forgettable. What we get instead is an album full of slower, darker songs. Which would be fine, except for the fact that they’re not great and that the band teased at just the opposite. There are a couple more upbeat tracks, like ‘Throwaway Society’, ‘Final Fight’, and ‘Vikings of Modern Times’, but 8RED begins and ends with too many laid back tunes. To make matters worse, most of the songs are longer than five minutes, and waiting for the next song to play gets painful at times. ‘Final Fight’ is probably the best song on the album (it’s actually really good), but every other track is plagued by at least as much bad as it has good.8RED, to say it kindly, was hard to get through. And, unfortunately for my sorry ass, I got to do it three whole times! I may as well have not even bothered, though, because there’s nothing to be gained by listening to it any more than once. It’s straightforward and offers nothing new upon consecutive listens. No hidden background parts, nothing to really break down. It’s just bland. However, there’s always (usually) a silver lining. One thing to like about this album are the guitar riffs. They’re nothing special, but they’re the strongest part of the album and they keep the energy flowing as much as they can. Some of the better guitarwork can be found in ‘Vikings of Modern Times’ and ‘Killing Innocence’. The drumming is also pretty good, but the one-dimensional songwriting and monotonous vocal lines prevent the rhythm section from elevating the music very high on its own.The biggest problem with 8RED is that it sounds like an inexperienced highschool band. Now, this wouldn’t be as big of an issue as it is if the fucking band hadn’t been around for, oh, I don’t know, MORE THAN THIRTY YEARS. Yeah, there was a six year break in the 90s and they’ve gone through numerous lineup changes, but there’s no excuse for a band that’s run for this long to sound the way it does. It’s uninspired heavy metal with weak melodies, wonky vocals, and amateurish tropes.
