Bio:

Gauntlet Rule was formed in 2019 by guitarist Rogga Johansson (Paganizer, Massacre) and bassist Peter Svensson (Assassin's Blade, Void Moon) with vocalist Teddy Möller (Loch Vostok). Gauntlet Rule was formed in 2019 by guitarist Rogga Johansson (Paganizer, Massacre) and bassist Peter Svensson (Assassin’s Blade, Void Moon) with the intent of creating timeless heavy metal. The line up was completed by vocalist Teddy Möller (Loch Vostok).Despite of, or maybe because of, the style of Gauntlet Rule being a huge departure from the styles of Johansson’s and Möller’s main bands, the band manages to create an original sounding record yet maintain all the trademarks of classic metal. The songs range from speed metal to almost doom metal, but the focus on fist-pumping heavy metal is never let go. The foundation of the songs is the unrelenting riffing of the riffmaster Johansson, backed by the tight and sometimes adventurous rhythm section of Svensson and guest drummer Lars Demoké. The massive vocals of Möller set the tone for the journey through the landscapes of “The Plague Court”. Lyrical themes include horror stories, war, internal struggles, and supernatural concepts; sometimes several of the themes in one song. The album also features the excellent vocal talents of two guest vocalists. Blaze Bayley (ex-Iron Maiden) lends his world class pipes to the track "Dying for My Dreams", to which he also contributed additional vocal arrangements and lyrical adjustments. Blaze comments: "I really enjoyed working on this song, a great time working on the guest vocal. I wish the guys every success with the release".The other guest vocalist in the album is is Lorraine Gill from cult US Metal band Taist Of Iron. She adds her haunting yet powerful vocals to the track "A Choir of Angels". "It was an absolute pleasure to work on this project, and I felt honored to be asked to do so", she declares. "The music and lyrics are absolutely top notch and I was blown away by the whole collection! The music stands alone. Not like anything I’ve heard recently!"

Album:

Rogga Johansson is a legendary name in the death metal circles, appearing on numerous releases by Paganizer, Massacre, Ribspreader, Those Who Bring The Torture and at least 20 more bands, but it was a big surprise to see his name in a classic old school heavy metal one. Gauntlet Rule is exactly that, with the line-up of this new band completed by bassist Peter Svensson (Assassin’s Blade, Void Moon) and vocalist Teddy Möller (Loch Vostok). The Plague Court is their full length debut and it will be released on March 18th, through From The Vaults Records, which is a sub-division of Target Group. The cover artwork speaks volumes of what you should expect here and the deviation from Rogga’s “comfort zone” is striking. The Plague Court is meat and potatoes heavy metal, composed and played with heart and conviction. It will be hard to single out any of the songs, apart from Dying For My Dreams, which features Blaze Bayley on lead vocals, as well as A Choir Of Angels with the great performance of Lorraine Gill from cult US Metal band Taist Of Iron. This doesn’t mean the rest of the songs don’t deserve a special mention, even though the albums gets a bit tedious after a while. Gauntlet Rule are obviously searching for their place in the overcrowded classic metal genre, but they are not insisting on being original. The purpose here it seems is to have fun, with a style that has formed these guys as musicians back when they started playing music.Death Will Be Ours (And Ours Alone) is the closing epic, and longest song in the album with the best performance from Svensson. I can even say it is the best of the bunch, because it displays the band’s potential. This debut is even better than I expected, but the songs are too “safe” and don’t leave a lasting impression, even if most of them are good on their own. I am glad Mr. Johansson’s found time for some classic, true heavy in his busy death metal schedule and this is a nice surprise indeed.

Album:

2 full-length album.AFTER THE KILL has an album cover that features a mighty warrior with a huge battlescythe standing over a slain beast. Without hearing a note, I knew I’d love the album! Sometime you CAN judge a book, or in this case an album, by its cover!Sweden’s GAUNTLET RULE entered the arena in 2022 prepared to do war with false Metal with a decent debut called THE PLAGUE COURT released on Target Records. The lineup remains united and the band skipped up a step to the slightly larger Spanish label, Fighter Records.Normally, I like to give a bit of background in the members if the band in my reviews but in this case it would take several paragraphs, because every member of the band boasts an impressive metal resume. While I’d hesitate to call this a true Metal super-group or all-star project all the metal warriors in Gauntlet Rule are extremely experienced! Briefly the band consists of guitarist and Death Metal titan, Rogga Johnson (Massacre), and Gus longtime partner-in-crime, Peter Svensson in bass. The lineup is basically the same as Assassins Blade and Battle Axis with Marcus Rosenqvist on drums. Kketil Lynghaug of Paganizer shreds up a storm in lead guitar and Teddy Moller (bassist of Wuthering Heights) supplies rough and ready vocals. Who knew he could sing? Moller’s vocals are raw and battle ready. Think more Boltendahl and less Fabio Lione!Sonically this album of true old, school Metal is warm and well produced. It has a nice natural drum sound and the mix is decent. The band play almost a speedy USPM sound, keeping arm’s length from any frilly Euro keyboard driven ballerina Metal! It’s ok, I love that stuff too but this is much more Grave Digger and Running Wild territory. These are simple songs, simple compositions and arrangements which makes them even more appealing. The pace is usually mid-tempo (tracks like the grinding ‘Empire Maker’ to the quick time of ‘Bite The Hand That Feels’. The album ends in a slightly more epic note with the track called ‘The Scythe’ which has various moods and tempos and stretches almost nine minute with a rousing post-chorus lyric , ‘Slave to the rhythm of the blade!’The battle-hardened veterans can do this stuff in their sleep and make it look and sound easy. The result is a superb slab of true Metal of works class caliber and AFTER THE KILL shows many how it should be done.
