Albums:

Debut EP of Axe Crazy reissued by Classic Metal Records, containing bonus tracks: demo from 2010 and live tracks.Well, since long, the old way of making Metal music really catches many fans, and some bands trying to sound like the old days (especially the 80’s). Obviously some can have bad results, other ones can have better, and some are the finest. But to be on the last group, it needs to have something more to say than was said until now. And the Polish quintet AXE CRAZY still have a way to go, besides the EP “Angry Machines” is a good record. It’s the old and good traditional way of playing Heavy Metal from the first half of the 80’s, like bands from some German bands, almost touching Power Metal. Obviously, they are a pretty good band, with great amounts of energy and they play their instruments in a hard and heavy way. But it sounds like many bands before, offering nothing new and nothing of their hearts. But Ol’ Big Daddy here can feel that these nephews have a latent personality, pulsing there, wanting to come out at any moment. It’s a matter of time.Good sound quality (could be better, to be completely honest with you all), all instruments in their due places, good level of weight. In the middle of this all, a musical work that still lacks some personality to arise, but as Big Daddy said above: it’s just a matter of time and experience.“Angry Machines”, “Hungry for Life”, “Sabretooth Tiger” and “Running Out of Time” are all good songs, catching and with good melodies, showing a good work on both guitars (remind some aspects of the first albums of SAXON and a bit of a rawer HELLOWEEN), heavy rhythmic kitchen and very good vocals (this guy really know how to use his voice), but the band still gives us that old feeling that says “I have heard this before” to evident.Maybe more shows can help than to put their inner personality out, for now, they still seem many bands we know. Well, let’s wait and see.

I’m not really up on the Polish metal scene but if Axe Crazy are anything to go by then I’m on the next plane to Krakow.Incidentally, I was meant to go on a stag party to Krakow a while back but it was decided in the end to go to Prague instead where the beer was twice the price but flights £10 cheaper. Go figure…Anyway, back to matters in hand. Ride On The Night, out on No Remorse, is Axe Crazy’s debut full-length album following an EP release, Angry Machines, and several appearances on heavy metal compilations. The band is named after the song by NWOBHM forerunners Jaguar and you can definitely pick up that era’s influence in their music.Ride On The Night, however, is simply not an exercise in balls-out metal mayhem, it is much more than that. It has pace and power in spades but also has rhythm, melody, and thoughtful well-constructed songs. We open with the obligatory instrumental, “March Of The Survivors”, which, after a bout of noise, is very reminiscent of Iron Maiden’s “The Ides Of March”, though without the world class solo.We first encounter vocalist Michael Skotnicki on the album’s title track. He is a very interesting individual in that he perfectly replicates vocals of the NWOBHM era. His voice is just strong enough for metal but would not score highly on the power-o-meter. This, however, means that he doesn’t overpower the songs, merely complements them. On occasion, he also sounds like he would fit nicely into a 70’s prog rock group. Versatility, can’t knock it. “Ride On The Night” is indeed a belting track with galloping riffs and screaming solo.Hot on its heels comes “Take Control” with its Maiden-esque intro and general Maiden feel but more 1983/4 than 1980.Thunderous drumming courtesy of Andrzej Heczko welcomes us to “Guardians Of The Light” and he doesn’t let up throughout. The break in this track is a belter with the twin rhythm guitars of Adrian Bigos and Robson Bigos going at it hammer and tongs.“Astral Tales Part 1” begins with some beautiful guitaring which leads into a really catchy song. The pace is exceptional as is the solo, which perfectly fits with the two guitarists sharing the duties.Punch-in-the-guts drumming and riffing are the order of the day on “Diving Hawkers” which rattles along at a fair lick but not too fast for my foot to keep up, excellent stuff.A change of pace is up next with “Magic Power”. It moves effortlessly between guitaring befitting of a top notch ballad and gang vocal chants. Sounds odd but Axe Crazy pull it off.The foot tapping and head nodding continue on “Halloween” which is another cracking track. All the tracks are well paced, don’t run away with themselves and are superbly executed. We finish all too quickly with “Astral Tales Part 2” which is a great way to finish. A rollicking romp of a track, fast and heavy with another fabulous solo. This is a great album to kick off the new year. It is perfect for those of a traditional metal persuasion and I can’t recommend it highly enough.Axe Crazy? I know I am.

Albums:

Axe Crazy are back, and not a moment too soon! Hexbreaker is the follow up to the outstanding full-length debut Ride on the Night and while there have been a few behind the scenes changes the spirit is well and truly still there.Originating from Ledziny in southern Poland, Axe Crazy have mastered the art of what is now called the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal. Their music has power, pace and melody in abundance, a real treat for the ears.In what seems to be an example of strange timing, Axe Crazy parted ways with vocalist Michael Skotnicki earlier this year, prior to the recording of Hexbreaker. Fortunately his replacement Tomasz Swidrak has filled the gap beautifully. He is not too dissimilar to Skotnicki and is often reminiscent of Helloween’s Michael Kiske, especially when the European accent comes through.Another change comes with the departure of drummer Andrzej Heczko but that was not until after the recording of the album. He has been replaced by Tymoteusz Ciach and it will be interesting to see how he fits in, although it may be a while before we find out.The stalwarts and only ever-presents are Adrian and Robson Bigos on guitars who once again deliver the goods with great rhythm and lead work. You know you’re in for a treat from the get-go and the storming riffs of “Under Command”.Axe Crazy. The final piece of the jigsaw comes with solid bassman Daniel Czupryn, who maintains the drive throughout Hexbreaker.Ride on the Night was clearly influenced by Iron Maiden but on Hexbreaker this is not as obvious. I feel there are strains of power metal coming through and the influence is more early Helloween than anything else. There is plenty of variety to keep you interested in the album. There are fist in the air homages to metal such as “Ritual of Steel/Fuel for Life” and “Heavy Metal Power Force” alongside keep-the-faith anthems like “Out of the Darkness” and “Never Look Back”.Following on from the two-part “Astral Tales” of Ride on the Night there is another two-parter in “Walpurgis Tales”. For those of us not in the know, Walpurgis Night (in German folklore) is the night before the feast day of St Walpurgis when witches congregate. Hence the titles “Witches’ Treasure” and “The Legend of Stormwitch”.Whatever the themes or tales of the tracks I do know that each and every track hits the spot. The pace is great and all the solos are superbly fitting, especially on “Out of the Darkness” where it is exquisite.‘Second album syndrome’ is often talked about but thankfully this affliction is nowhere to be seen. Hexbreaker is a quality metal album very much up there with their debut. Well done guys!
