Country : Sweden

Mounting the steed of metal in 2020, Krilloan started out on the quest to pay tribute to the legends of old. The music is forged in the dark forest of southern Sweden and combines classic melodic heavymetal/powermetal with fantasy themed lyrics.Debut EP, “Stories Of Times Forgotten” will be released spring 2021.To the sound of men, iron, and thundering hooves, we charge, Into the storm!

Album:

Krilloan are a melodic power metal band from Sweden formed in 2020 by the disciple of metal Klas Holmgren. Inspired by bands such as Blind Guardian, Helloween, Gamma Ray, and Iron Savior, Klas and his band Krilloan, released the five song E.P. ‘Stories Of Times Forgotten’ in 2021……and is a barn storming and rapturous romp of scorching power metal. The five songs on offer are all fast, furious and infectious. The E.P. explodes into life with the blistering speedster ‘Into The Storm’, a frenetic fury of pace and power. ‘Into The Storm’ has purpose and intent, and is a red hot scorcher of an opening salvo. The pace and intensity doesn’t relent one bit either, as ‘Yggdrasil’ gallops in and powers on. More traditional sounding heavy metal than the opener’s power metal stance, ‘Yggdrasil’ is the stuff of “foot on the monitor”, and will send mosh pits totally insane. After such a blistering opening double shot, you’d think the fuel for the fire was all burned out – but oh no! Krilloan seem to have an endless supply of fuel, pouring more and more on the fire, and blazing on with the high velocity ‘Fireborn’. The pace is incredible, and the chorus chant of “fireborn” designed to be a crowd participation moment in a live arena, with Krilloan turning heads wherever the E.P. gets played. And just like a laser guided missile hitting its target with amazing accuracy, so do Krilloan…right in the sweet spot! The fastest song so far ‘Moonblade’, gallops in and races on at lightning speed. Bands such as DragonForce and Cellador, are gonna be quivering in their boots, with this new speed/power outfit from Sweden setting about wrenching the title of “kings of speed metal” from their grasp. Bloody awesome stuff! And without time for a breather, the fifth and final song launches high into the stratosphere – and is the slowest song on offer! And when I say slowest, I mean it’s still fast, just not as fast as the four previous songs. But ‘Times Forgotten’ exudes so much of the European style of power metal that it’s instantly likeable, as are all five offerings presented here.Overall, a red hot scorcher of a power metal march, ‘Stories Of Times Forgotten’ is a sparkling five song tsunami of incredible epicness.

Album:

Capping 2022 off in a blast of blazing speed, furious melodics and marvelous power metal like a thunder of dragons clashing in battle, it’s Krilloan smashing the hammer and unveiling their debut album, Emperor Rising. Of course, everyone knows Sweden’s had it fair share of power metal glory, plenty of bands from the 2000-ish era reaching near legend status, so when Krilloan showed up about a year or so ago few eyebrows were raised. The debut EP released last year was nice and all as a taste of what’s to come, and then the guys really held it in until the last minute here to get their first full length released just in the nick of time to get onto the best of 2022 lists. What’s herein presented is sprawling with speedy, melodic guitar antics, sprinkled with high a high octane rhythm section and high pitched vocals; it’s full of cheese, fantastic in every sense, an ode to power metal. Straight from the get go we’re presented with Prince of Caledor, a massive opener, a blast of fun and fury in melodic flourish. The riffing is fast, it’s hungry, it’s driving a dragon shooting fire and napalm; Klas Holmgren and Steve Brockmann make for an axe wielding duo slapping the melodic crap out of you as you delve onward.Sure, nothing on here is really groundbreaking, but it’s done with such conviction, such belief in the craft you can’t help but be swept along for the ride, swinging your sword all along the way. Ok, so to call Krilloan a Swedish band might be stretching it, since most members are in fact not Swedish - but the frozen tundra of the North is where they made their beginning, and you’ve got all the classic Swedish power metal greats represented in the influences. It all hearkens back to that second era of great power metal around the turn of the millenium, Swedes running the forefront; Lost Horizon, Crystal Eyes, even newer bands like Twilight Force - Krilloan pay tribute to them all, in their own way. Alex VanTrue’s high octane performance, akin to the likes of Alessandro Conti (Trick or Treat, Twilight Force) brings just the right amount of cheese, and he has the talent to back it up. High notes and shouts blast just as frequent as fret blazing melodic solos, choruses thick with sing along layered vox; the man embraces all the fun and adds his charismatic touch to the end result. What Emperor Rising might just be lacking is that direction shift, something to break the mold - typically it’d be a ballad, but not necessarily so; it could be a slow burner that takes a minute or two to burst. As it stands, we’re presented with 36 minutes (they really rush by) of furious metal, and a break in between could be the moment to really emphasize how great those 36 minutes are. It’s a short album, but Krilloan still manage to get a bit of everything great in there.Take the title track, which just bites and claws and draws all kinds of fire in pure speed and fury; take Stormlight with its pure approach, vibrant and deep with an unending rhythm section, VanTrue channeling his greatest Kaladin Stormblessed and just plain fucking power metal madness. Krilloan are definitely not out to reinvent the wheel, but they’re definitely here to prove power metal isn’t dead and to add some much needed jet fuel to the dragonfire; time to make it fucking roar.

Album:

As I began my listening sessions with Sweden’s Krilloan and their second album Return of the Heralds, I reflected on how rarely I review power metal.1 That’s partly because we don’t get much of it in the promo sump these days apart from grizzled olde dawgs like Hammerfall and Powerwolf. It seems to be a genre in decline with fewer bands stepping forward to hoist the yellow banner of Cheese Whizardy. That’s a shame too, because as much as we mock power metal for its frilly, sugary excesses, it can be among the most embiggening metal styles when executed properly. Now comes Krilloan with badass Castlevania-esque cover art and a style blending classic Euro-power with traditional and trve/epic elements. At times you’ll hear traces of the early Euro-power stalwarts, late wavers like Lost Horizon, and even grandiose operators like Blind Guardian. Ambitions may be king-sized, but a lot can go wrong when you reach for the stars. What fate awaits the starry-eyed Krill-Monger?With a shocking lack of over-the-top intro nonsense, Return of the Heralds leaps directly into the fray with “Atlantean Sword,” which is the most standard-issue Euro-power tracks on offer here. It smacks of the bombast of Italian cheddar warriors Domine and also bears a strong similarity to the early days of Sonata Arctica, in no small part due to Alex VanTrue’s Tony Kakko-adjacent delivery. It’s a lively song full of galloping, sword-swinging energy with a Conan the Barbarian theme, though it suffers from sounding like a million other power metal nuggets. After that, Krilloan start to play with outside influences. “Kings of The Iron Hill” dials up the traditional metal influence for a more muscular sound, and “Blood & Fire (Born on a Battlefield)” goes even further, bringing trve metal aesthetics into play for a rougher, meaner approach that suits the Conan storyline. Heavy riffs drive the attack forward as war chants punctuate the storytelling in a Manocentric way. I especially appreciate how Krilloan borrows from the immortal soundtrack of Conan the Barbarian for maximum glory riding. As Heralds unspools, Krilloan get heavier and more aggressive and this is when they’re at their best. “Hammer of Wrath” is like Domine mixing DNA with Paragon, making for a more impactful sound and the chorus is righteous. “Avenging Sun” goes even harder, channeling trve acts like Ancient Empire and Ironflame for added machismo. The Blind Guardian worship gets real on the folksy “The Kingkillers Tale” as VanTrue pulls off a scary accurate Hansi Kürsch impression, and late album cut “We Burn” seasons Amorphis-like guitar bits throughout a wild battle anthem full of piss and vinegar. While the writing is a bit uneven, no song is bad or disposable. The performances are impressive and the band wisely keep the songs short and tight with only one reaching the 5-minute mark. This along with a tight 40-minute runtime makes Return of the Heralds an easy spin with some high points.Talent abounds in Krilloan and I’m especially impressed by Alex VanTrue’s vocals. The man is a chameleon with a big range, channeling any number of notable power metal luminaries. He can hit the high notes but does so sparingly and has a good ear for hooky vocal lines and patterns. He sells the material well and keeps the listener involved. Steve Brockmann and Klas Holmgren are talented guitarists capable of driving a song with solid riffs and soaring when solo time is nigh. Marco Ignacio Toba’s bass is present and involved, and Christoph Brandes powers the music with booming double-base runs and thundering kit work. Krilloan possess the ability needed to rock the power genre and when their writing is at its peak, good things happen.Return of the Heralds is a good power metal album that sometimes threatens to become more. With more consistent writing and a drift away from the generic elements of the Euro-power sound, Krilloan have real potential. I’ll be watching to see what they do next since good Euro-power is pretty scarce these days. Worth a loud spin with sword held high.
