Combining cultural and literary elements of steampunk, dystopian society and futuristic technologies with highly articulate progressive metal music, the album transports the listener to a world broken and needing a hero. That oppressive world is devoid of arts, creativity, light, and ultimately, humanity. But from it springs an enigmatic character, Arabella Vash, who is called to The One Constant, a group of rebels who maintain the history and teachings of the last free society.The core members of MINDCAGE — Dietrick Hardwick (guitar), Brian Howell (bass) and Craig Nudo (drums) — have been connected personally and through music for almost thirty years. The significance of this project, for them, is that a lifelong goal has come to fruition. With the addition of power vocalist Jeff Hignite, the intense and unique synergy of writing and performing became apparent.

MINDCAGE is a Heavy / Power / Classic / Progressive Metal band from Gulf Breeze, Florida in United States. Band was formed in 1996 and have released their debut album „Our Own Devices” in 2013. Guys have chosen Julie Westlake (Hydrogyn) as the voice of Arabella Vash. The album was mixed and pre-mastered by rock legend Michael Wagener (METALLICA, OZZY OSBOURNE, SKID ROW, DOKKEN, RAVEN, MEGADETH).My favourite track is “The Human Race” with fine sounding keys, massive guitars, and big dozen of melody. It’s great progressive music and a perfect duet with strong vocals of male vocalist with female singer – it is wonderful! Also are hear able some classic music echoes in the guitars. Jeff Hignite has an interesting sounding voice, clear, deep, strong, pure and melodic; he shows emotions through singing. Massive riffs, progressive rhythmic in “For All Mankind (The Dark Design)” absorbs the listener completely. Also in the vocals, I hear IRON MAIDEN, PRIME TIME, QUEENSRYCHE & JORN echoes. Amazing guitar solo is in this song played by Dietrick Hardwick has similarity to MICHAEL SCHENKER or AXEL RUDI PELL.“The Serenity Sequence (Renaissance Pt. I)” and “The Grand Restoration (Renaissance Pt. II)” are brilliant on this CD. In the first of them acoustic guitar is mixing with deep vocal of the male singer & sweet voice of the female singer. It is a fine ballad with IRON MAIDEN echoes and higher climate like in HELLOWEEN songs. The second of them has heavier riffs & a powerful duet of the male and female vocalists. Perfect riffs add flavour to this track. This is just a high level song with DREAM THEATER influences. It is hear able also in the faster “Arabella’s Arc” with melodic progressive riffs and depth of singing.Worth a listen are also: “The One Constant” with JUDAS PRIEST memories and a nice connection to classic music, and the title track “Our Own Devices”, where calmer sounds mix changeable rate, clear and pure singing with impressive guitar solo. There are stronger sounds in “Firefly” with a high style of catchy refrain. For me every song on this CD is interesting and has its own soul.This album from MINDCAGE is highly recommend for every Metal head who loves Progressive / Power Metal, and such bands as DREAM THETER, QUEENSRYCHE, JUDAS PRIEST or IRON MAIDEN. Generally, the songs are well-worked with melody, power, energy, a passion of playing music.Perfection and experience in every inch. You will be not disappointed after listening to this album of these Florida-based Progressive Metallers. You will just fall in love with their sounds! This music just addicted and hypnotizing.

The 1987 demo by US-Americans MINDCAGE was once supposed to be released by Mike Varney via ‘Shrapnel Records’, but the plans fell through and the group sent their demo out into the big wide world themselves in a small cassette edition in 1992.Now it is being released for the first time as a silver disc via ‘Arkeyn Steel Records’ in a hand-numbered edition, mastered by Kostas Scandalis with lyrics and photos in memory of their master singer Tom Williams, who died far too early in 2020.Here we are dealing with one of the most important recordings of the US Heavy / Prog Metal underground.The debut demo by Florida’s MINDCAGE.Its recordings were started back in spring of 1987 on a period where the band have been relocated to San Francisco, California. Initially it was a demo that was shopped to several record labels. And it actually garnered the interest of Mike Varney, CEO of Shrapnel Records. However, plans were scrapped after creative differences could not be resolved between the band and the label’s producer. Despite this setback, MINDCAGE soldiered on, and in 1992 they did a short run of cassette tapes of their initial recording to make their music more widely available.These tapes were sent to the press and fans far and wide.Arkeyn Steel Records is reissuing this material on an official CD edition under the “Chrononaut” title. I am going back to those recordings as I am writing this review.And yes, I am blown away by the amazing remastered sound of this particular reissue. Kostas Scandalis has done its magic again.Kept in its original form without any bonus tracks, the demo consists of six songs that have been remastered and re-pressed on CD format. Six songs that have been recorded back in 1987: a period when many classics of the US Prog / Power Metal where under release or under development: QUEENSRYCHE have delivered “Rage for Order” and were recording “Operation Mindcrime”, CRIMSON GLORY have released their same titled debut and were creating “Transcendence”, FATES WARNING have released “Awaken the Guardian” and basically all their first three classics featuring John Artch. And yes Steve Benito was already in HEIR APPARENT making miracles. So under this ideal background MINDCAGE were capturing their songs as demo recordings trying to establish a record deal. Really what could have happened if those recordings have been released back on the day as an official full length release under the name of a big label? Well I can assure you that the Prog / Power Metal history would be a little different or at list there would be another release included on the list with the classics. Why? Because those recordings are simply pure gold. Nothing more, nothing less.This is a deep study to the elegant process of progress and power. A great example of the classic mid 80s Ryche sound captured on tape. An outstanding debut release that marked the course of this excellent band.Six songs are included in here: Six masterpieces of excellent songwriting, and outstanding performance blessed by brilliant vocals. The band have managed to develop a perfect balance between the overall Progressive installment that identifies the songs of this session and the variety of influences that take those compositions to the very next level: and yes I am referring to the Classic Heavy Metal touches and the Power Metal references.From RUSH to IRON MAIDEN and from QUEENSRYCHE to CRIMSON GLORY the six songs of this demo are sign like thunder.“Chrononaut” is dedicated to the memory of Tom Williams, the band’s original frontman, whose tragic passing in 2020 was a tremendous loss. His voice and vision were instrumental in carving out MINDCAGE‘s distinctive path in the metal world from the onset. His contributions are celebrated in this early recording, which we are proud to share far and wide.The reissue follows the well known Arkeyn Steel Records standards: packed with complete lyrics, photos and an extensive biography by band’s guitarist Dietrick Hardwick. Yes an ideal package is shaped doing justice to those outstanding recordings that made available for everyone again.Demo 1987 by MINDCAGE is considered as a classic to me and is has been place next to the big chapters of the Progressive / Power Metal genre from the United States of America.It is time for you to discover this treasure as well.
