Bio:
The name Acid may not be worthy of more than a minuscule footnote in rock history, but to many heavy metal experts, this little-known band remains one of Belgium's best-ever exports. Formed circa 1980 in the Belgian town of Brugge and initially calling themselves Previous Page, Acid was among the first European bands to emerge in the wake of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (hence the necessary name change). Comprising guitarists Demon and Dizzy Lizzy; bassist T-Bone; drummer Anvil; and charismatic, leather-loving singer/dominatrix Kate de Lombaerd, the quintet soon evolved from a gritty but conventional heavy metal band into a proto-thrash unit heavily inspired by the likes of Venom and Raven. Come July 1982, Acid was ready to take on the world (or at least the Benelux region) and issued their debut single, "Hell on Wheels," through Roadrunner Records; but a long-term deal was not forthcoming, so they simply took matters into their own hands.Maniac Unleashed in January 1983 through the band's own Giant imprint, their eponymous first album was the raucous embodiment of kids going crazy. Its embryonic speed metal and forced-but-fun faux-satanic lyrics did little more than mimic their cross-channel heroes (often with hysterical results), but, at the same time, was all the more special because of its very shortcomings. A sophomore effort called Maniac followed a year later and replicated its predecessor's every move, including the part involving utter commercial failure. Still, the band pressed on, with 1985's Engine Beast and, following a long hiatus, 1989's Don't Lose Your Temper, before finally throwing in the towel. Not exactly a stellar career run by commercial standards, but one which has ensured that Acid's small yet combustible contribution to the development of heavy metal should remain a fond memory of those who were there.

Audio restoration and mastering by Patrick W. Engel at TEMPLE OF DISHARMONY in March 2019.Just a few months after their initial full-length “Acid” in 1983, Belgium’s finest of the same name churned out a record that perfectly blended their debut’s spontaneous energy with the subtlety of a well-practised band at the height of its powers.“Maniac” is Acid’s key work without any doubt and belongs to the canon of early extreme metal, with genuine classics such as swaggering opener ‘Max Overload,’ the satanic romp of ‘Black Car’ or the rhythmically complex closer ‘Bottoms Up’ and, of course, ‘Lucifera’ as the group’s unofficial anthem. The Bruges-based troupe, led by drum dervish Anvill and one-of-a-kind front woman Kate de Lombaert, were able to combine the spirit of punk and rock ’n’ roll with a degree of precision that antedated thrash as we know it today, thus becoming a much-revered name within the international underground. As such, the album is the proverbial “all killer, no filler” affair, giving the likes of Black Sabbath, Motörhead and Venom – all of which shared stages with Acid – a hard time wherever the band played live … and will do so again. Right on time for Acid’s first reunion performance at Keep It True Festival 2020 in Germany, High Roller represses “Maniac” together with its pre- and successors. The four tracks from the 1984 EP “Black Car” serve as bonus for both the CD and LP versions, added to the latter on a seprate 7” with with picture sleeve while the album proper comes in different colours, housed in 425g cardboard with lyric insert and poster. Patrick W. Engel restored and mastered the best lossless audio sources available at Temple of Disharmony, the LPs were cut at SST Germany on Neumann machines for optimal quality on all levels.
