Sweden / Helsingborg

Genre:

Melodic Death Metal , Thrash Metal

Bio:

Darkane was formed in January 1998 from the ashes of Agretator, a thrash metal band hailing from the Swedish costal city Helsingborg. Inspired by the aggression, speed, and technical finesse of At The Gates, Christofer Malmström (Lead Guitars) joined forces with his longtime best friend Peter Wildoer (Drums). In the heat of musical inspiration, the two wrote and recorded “Convicted” and “The Rape Of Mankind” on a 4-track tape recorder and drum machine. After playing these two songs for Wez at War Music, Darkane landed it’s first record deal. The two recorded “Convicted” and “July 1999” for the Wardance compilation with bassist Jörgen Löfberg, guitarist Klas Ideberg and vocalist Bjorn “Speed” Strid. Due to conflicting commitments with Soilwork, Speed’s duration in Darkane was short. Nevertheless, the friendship between Soilwork and Darkane would remain long lasting. Malmström and Wildoer kept busy and continued writing throughout 1998, eventually composing enough material for a full-length release.

Having been huge fans of Daniel Bergstrand’s work with Meshuggah, Darkane decided to record their debut album at Dug-Out Studios in Uppsala in August 1998. However, Darkane remained without a vocalist and front man. The band asked Bergstrand for suggestions and immediately Lawrence Mackrory’s name came up. Mackrory had been working with Bergstrand as a studio assistant for some time and also was the front man for Forcefeed. After briefly listening to Forcefeed, Darkane decided to give Makrory a shot and the opportunity to record all the vocals for what would be Rusted Angel.
Following two weeks at Dug-Out Studios with Daniel Bergstrand, Rusted Angel was completed. The band was very satisfied and hungry to play live. Darkane made their live debut in Uppsala on September 11, 1998. The band finished the year off with three other gigs in the south of Sweden. In March 1999, Darkane was slated to do their first short European tour in support of Naglfar and Soilwork. However, Makrory had previous arrangements to do gigs with Forcefeed. While searching high and low for a replacement vocalist for the tour, Malmström came across Andreas Sydow, whom he had played with in a cover band. Although Sydow was not a metal vocalist, after some persuasion, he agreed. Darkane’s first international gig in Belgium went so well that he was asked to join the band permanently.

Rusted Angel was released on April 19th 1999 in Europe, and October 1st 1999 in the USA. At the release party show, Darkane found out they had been invited to play Dynamo Open Air Festival, one of Europe’s largest metal festivals. Commented Malmström on the Dynamo experience, “That festival was great, a lot of awesome bands played that year. Metallica was headlining and Meshuggah played also. We got to play in front of 15,000 people, which was overwhelming.” More festivals followed for Darkane in 1999 including Hultsfred Festival in Sweden. In November 1999 Darkane toured Europe with Marduk, Cannibal Corpse, and Defleshed among others.
Upon returning from their Cannibal Corpse tour, Darkane immediately began work on their follow-up to Rusted Angel. Darkane recorded the introduction track “Calamitas” on May 15, 2000. The next week, Wildoer went into the studio and banged out the drum tracks. With drum tracks and intro in hand, the band headed up to Uppsala to record their sophomore release with Daniel Bergstrand. Darkane spent all of June at Dug-Out Studios working on their second record. As fate would have it, the sessions were plagued by bad luck. Burned out recording equipment, floods, and an electric storm that ravaged the studio, were some of the setbacks that Darkane encountered. However, in traditional Darkane form, the band persevered and finished the album, choosing to name it Insanity after the chaos that ensued during the recording sessions. Darkane soon after signed a record deal with Nuclear Blast Records and Insanity was released in March and April of 2001 worldwide.

Throughout the spring and summer of 2001 Darkane toured across Europe and did many festivals in support of Insanity. However, the most memorable moment for the band was their first gig in the USA at the Milwaukee Metal Fest. After playing for the first time in the USA, Darkane saw that there was much more in the world left to conquer and in autumn 2001 began to write the material for the their third album. Concurrently, with the knowledge passed down to them from Bergstrand, Darkane rebuilt their practice space and added a great deal of recording equipment. The studio would later be called “Not Quite Studio.” In February 2002 the band entered Dug-Out Studios with Bergstrand to record the drums and vocals for their third release. Darkane recorded the bass and guitars at Not Quite Studio with guidance from Bergstrand. Following the recording, Darkane also shot their first music video for the single “Innocence Gone.” Expanding Senses was released on August 24th 2002.
Following the release of Expanding Senses, Darkane toured extensively throughout Europe and did their first gigs in Japan. In spring 2003 Darkane returned to the US for the New Jersey Metal Fest. In March, the band joined Meshuggah for a short Scandinavian tour. In April Darkane hit the road in Europe with Testament, Marduk, Death Angel, and Nuclear Assault among others. Throughout the summer of 2003 Darkane played at some of the largest festivals in Europe, including Sweden Rock Festival, Rock Hard Festival, and Wacken Open Air. In September 2003 Darkane played their first show in the Middle East, in Tel-Aviv, Israel. In November Darkane concluded a successful touring cycle with another European tour with Death Angel, Mnemic, Mystic Prophecy and Disbelief.

Following their final European tour in November, Darkane began to prepare to record their fourth album, with almost a full album of material completed. However, the rigors of touring had hit the band hard. Drummer and founding member Peter Wildoer suffered a serious wrist injury, “He went to a few different doctors and they all told him they could not find anything wrong with him. They told him that it looks fine and that there was nothing wrong they could find. Peter said that he felt serious pain, even, at times, when lying in bed. He felt pain while drumming and it eventually forced him to stop playing and once he did stop the pain wouldn’t stop. After a year it finally went away,” commented Christofer Malmström. Darkane decided to go on hiatus until Wildoer fully recovered. During that period, Malmström had time to compile the music for his first solo album Non Human Level, which was a collection of a dozen songs he had written between 1999 and 2004. Klas Ideberg was also able to spend time working with his side project Terror 2000.
Finally in November of 2004 Wildoer felt the pain was gone. Darkane immediately started recording their new material. Following six months of hard work, Darkane completed Layers Of Lies in March 2005. The album was recorded once again at Not Quite Studio. A video for the song “Secondary Effects” was released in May 2005. With release dates set for Layers of Lies on June 12th in Europe and on July 12th for North America, Darkane was ready to hit the road.

Darkane did their first gigs of 2005 in Sweden and Denmark with several support bands. In winter 2005, Darkane embarked on its first North America tour, in support of Fear Factory, Soilwork, and Strapping Young Lad. The tour took Darkane through nearly every major city in the USA and Canada. Darkane’s introduction to the North American audience could not have been better, “We were surprised by the reception in the States and the fact that so many people showed up for the opening act. We felt very welcome and had a great time,” commented Malmström. In the spring of 2006 Darkane embarked a European tour with Sadus and Gory Blister. Following the tour, Darkane recorded a hometown concert with several cameras. The band spent much of the year, editing, mixing and mastering the footage for release as their first official live DVD, Layers Of Live. Layers Of Live, includes the concert footage, as well as nine other tracks, along with other footage highlighting Darkane’s career from 1998 until today. In August 2007, vocalist Andreas Sydow decided to end his tenure with Darkane. Although this was a tremendous blow to the band, Darkane continued to write new material throughout the fall. In October, Darkane announced the addition of vocalist Jens Broman (Construcdead, The Defaced) to the band’s ranks. Following the band’s performance at the first Scandinavian ProgPower festival, made Darkane preparations to record their fifth album in the winter.
After over seven tours worldwide, and four studio albums, the complete Darkane experience is encapsulated on the DVD you are about to watch. Layers Of Live marks not only the end of an era for Darkane, but also the beginning of a new age: which will be filled with more success, touring, and studio albums. As many bands come and go in the metal scene, few bands have proven to be as dedicated, hard working, persistent, and talented as Darkane.
