Album:

Sergeant Steel is a new interesting Melodic hardrock band from Austria. This album was produced by Jack Power (Sergeant Steel guitarist) and was mixed and mastered in Nashville by the legendary Michael Wagener (Warrant, Skid Row, Dokken). They deliver an well produced and bombastic album filled with strong melodies, big hooklines and powerful choruses. Their sound is a great mixture of twin guitars and plenty of keyboards. They remind very much of 80s Bonfire, Domain, mixed with modern day hardrock such Jettblack, Reckless Love and Hansel. Singer Phil Vanderkill has a great powerful voice. There´s lots of great songs on the album and few fillers. Just check out the catchy powerful opener Gods Of Love with riff strong guitars and filled with brilliant melodies. Mama Horny is another great rocker with riffs all over the song and a bombastic chorus with powerful background vocals. If your into Reckless Love then Sweet 16 will please you for sure, great song. Man On A Mission has a very catchy chorus. Best song on the album is the awesome and bombastic Cry Out Your Heart with brilliant pompish keyboards and a fantastic chorus with a H.e.a.t feeling over it. Taker Of My Heart starts slow but turns out to a brilliant rocker and has a catchy chorus that will hook you up. Men On A Mission is a great hardrock album that I recommend if your into those mentioned bands.

Album:

The moment I read the name SERGENT STEEL, I simply had to listen to this and do a review. You see being a marketing student at an MBA level, even small things like name of a band has started to fascinate me, and I guess if you are a rare old school band in this day and age, you are bound to have Steel or its synonyms in your band’s name! But that apart, as I started to do this review the weird fantasy kinky artwork caught my eyes and also made me wonder if this was a Stoner band or a Grindcore band, you probably wouldn’t have seen any self-imposed censorship in the artwork. Anyways let’s get along with the “Riders Of The Worm” releasing later this year on November 25th on Boyz Tyme Records.With 14 songs on offer here and the album clocking 55 min, I did wonder if the album had enough in it to keep me interested through-out. Let me find out. The album starts out with a happy going song in the aptly named “Happy Time (Love On Demand)”, and you soon realize that the sound resembles lot of yesteryears Hard Rock bands while still having its uniqueness. The song gives a unique feeling as unlike most Hard Rock or Metal bands that I listen to daily, SERGENT STEEL brings a happy feel to the table and it actually works. The first song is almost like an adult rhyme! As I drive along with the album, “Dirty Habits” reminds me of AIRBOURNE due to its sharp rhythmic riffs. Kane Roberts of ALICE COOPER fame offers a guest appearance in “Silver Spoon” which sounds too simplistic for my liking. “Where My Heart Is” is more of a Classic Rock love song as the electric guitar only makes its presence during the juicy solos, though all in all an interesting and beautiful song. “Young And Hungry” gives a glimpse of what the lyrics are as the band attempts an anthem here and I must say it almost does work for the boys, especially with another guest appearance in the form of the Hard Rock legend Mark Slaughter as he makes his presence felt through his vocals. I hate to describe each and every song here, but I will probably end up doing just that as each song seems to be worthy of some description as they seem to bring something new to the table. “Only Good Girls (Love A Rock 'n' Roll Boy)” is a much faster song and offers much needed pace to the album. The next few songs like “Rock 'n' Roll Highway” offer happy go lucky Rock n roll songs (nothing like AC/DC or GUNS N ROSES) which are somewhat not-so-appealing to the metalhead in me. “Samsara” is a rather melodic Indian classical style soothing 3 min instrumental which I surprisingly liked for what it was rather than judging it in a larger context of the album. Call me weird, but “Promised Land” felt like a crossover of JAMES BLUNT and SABASTEIN BACH. The band tries to blast a punkish song with “Trouble Maker” but again, not just convincing enough, especially after some really amazing songs. The album ends with a 53 sec Hip Hop remix of “Dirty Habits”, well I will not say anything more!The core sound of the band itself is great and is very interesting, but with 14 songs and the band trying far too many things in a single album, the essence kind of got lost a bit. But having said that “Riders Of The Worm” is still an album worth at least one time listen.

Austrian '80s inspired melodic hard rockers SERGEANT STEEL are celebrating their tenth year anniversary with their new CD "Best Of : Ten Years Anniversary [Limited Edition]", which will be released via Boyz Tyme Records on March 29, 2019.Ready for the time when Sergeant Steel will be supporting Scorpions and Europe, this compilation of greatest hits covers the band's discography; 2009’s Lovers & Maniacs, 2013’s Men On A Mission and 2015’s Riders Of The Worm.All these albums / tracks selected here were mixed & mastered by iconic '80s tweakers Michael Wagener and Beau Hill, so you know what to expect; polished and vibrant late '80s sound & style.Opening this Best Of, 'Cry Out Your Heart, Baby!' is probably one of my personal favorite tunes from Sergeant Steel. It has a real 80s Europe / Airrace-style opening keyboard line (for AOR lovers), up to the sky vocals, a memorable chorus, and gets a little tougher moving forward.Next 'Dirty Habits' ditches the over the top boards for a bit of organ and a classic 'hair metal' guitar line. The kind of 4/4 that puts the rhythm section with their heads down and lets the guitar / vocals play it out. A song that could easily have been appeared in Slaugther's 'Stick It To Ya!' album back then.Speaking of Mark Slaughter, he appears as guest 'Young and Hungry', a lovely middle-of-the-road tune with some acoustics added to the mix, and a fine sing along chorus.Then we find a previously unreleased version of 'Where My Heart Is [Orchestral Version]', a re-working of their original rocker here re-arranged in a ballad mode with piano and sweetened vocals, with background strings that artistically fades out during a vocal offering after nearly 4:50 minutes.'Happy Time (Love On Demand)' is has a more modern European sleazy style, one of the best songs from Sergeant Steel's Men On A Mission album.'Chasing Love' delivers a funkier, bluesy hard rocking '80s feel, then 'Hot Widow' reflects some Hurricane and perhaps 1989 Whitesnake influence with powerful vocals and a great lead guitar. Again 'Mama Horny' goes back to the bluesy melodies, with a bit of early Great White and why not Electric Boys.'Hammer Of Love' starts with the famous prerequisite happy girls screaming, and the lead vocals surprisingly maintain the same pitch. While previous tracks reflect later ’80s sounds, 'Hammer Of Love' is harder, pre ‘85 in its energy, sound and delivery.“Give Me A Call” is a cool power ballad, whereas the previouSly unreleased 'The Burning' brings the Best Of album to a fitting heavy conclusion with a track that combines the best of both old school and more modern sounds.While only about 10 years old, Sergeant Steel sounds like they could have started in 1984 and are still generating new music nearly 35 years later. Over the course of three albums, Sergeant Steel have produced genuine ’80s US inspired worthy hits, and at the same time, reflected some more modern sounds that swept Europe in the last ten plus years."Best Of : Ten Years Anniversary [Limited Edition]" an excellent start for someone who isn't familiar with the band's sound, to discover a really good melodic hard rock act that brings back the sound of Eighties, plus a bit more updated sound.

Austrian import SERGEANT STEEL is a six-piece neo-Classic Rock band, originally formed in 2007. They have produced three albums to date; 2010’s “Lovers & Maniacs”, 2013’s “Men On A Mission” and 2015’s “Riders Of The Worm”, as well as producing the official anthem of the EHC Black Wings Linz, and Austrian first division hockey team.They have also, throughout the years, worked with some exceptional (and legendary) talent, including producer/engineer Michael Wagener, Mark Slaughter (SLAUGHTER), Kane Roberts (ALICE COOPER) and Peter Mew of Abbey Road Studios. They have toured in support of such Hard Rock and Metal greats as DEEP PURPLE, HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES, THE DARKNESS, SCORPIONS and EUROPE, honing their craft and paying their dues. January 22, 2021 will see the release of their fourth album, “Truck Tales”, on both CD and digital streaming formats. This album was fine-tuned by Wagener in Nashville, TN.The album opens on a definite high note, with the anthemic “Fight Fire With Fire”. From the Eastern themed intro to the last chorus, this song is a fantastic example of a group of musicians who are doing things right. The cut was released as a preliminary single in the Fall of 2020, to positive feedback from all sources. Vanderkill’s vocal delivery is obviously influenced by the great Freddie Mercury in his inflection, and musically the band fires on all cylinders. Principal songwriter and lyricist, Jack Power, has done his homework in the genre, as the song is tightly crafted from the ground up.“Backseat Lover” follows, with a funk inspired intro that brought early EXTREME to mind. The intro gives way into a fantastically swaggering vocal, and more tightly crafted songwriting ability, on display. The guitar solo on this cut was of particular interest to me. There wasn’t a wasted note I could find. Everyone in the band functions as a cohesive unit on this record, with the keyboards and rhythm section as solid as anyone out there.Highlights abound, here. “Voodoo Queen”, another stellar track, has an incredible groove to it; as does the rocker “Body Language”, which follows. “Pain In My Ass” shows another side of the band, as it gives way to some acoustic work and a nicely placed humorous slant on things. SERGEANT STEEL should be ready for a breakout release. By all evidence I have been presented, they are past due.

You can once again expect a hit firework, spiced up with the band‘s very own sense of humour. In the studio Sergeant Steel worked together with musical legends like Michael Wagener, Beau Hill, Peter Mew at Abbey Road Studios, Mark Slaughter and Kane Roberts. Live-wise they played several top-notch open air festival and club shows throughout Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic. They shared the stage with Deep Purple, Hollywood Vampires, The Darkness, Scorpions, Europe & The Sweet just to name a few!

There are some things that, no matter how many years go by, will never go out of fashion. Classic hard rock, the orthodox kind that emerged during the ’70s and ’80s (or even a little earlier), is one of them. Especially as long as there are bands like Austrian SERGEANT STEEL, who may have been around for less than 20 years but sound as if they could rival DEEP PURPLE (sacrilege, I know, but you get what I mean) in experience and miles on the road.With their new album, “Golden Absolution”, due out in October 16, SERGEANT STEEL prove once again that they are an incredibly entertaining and reliable band. They know the secrets of classic hard rock and, at the same time, manage to serve the genre without ever sounding outdated. Infectious grooves, powerful guitars and choruses that demand to be sung out loud in any situation — from the bathroom to a packed arena alongside hundreds of other old-school metalheads.It is no coincidence that, for the first time in their history, SERGEANT STEEL chose to record the songs live in the studio. This approach gives the ten compositions greater immediacy, naturalness and cohesion, while preserving much of the energy of a live performance.From the very first second of “1000 Lives”, it becomes obvious that the guitars will play a leading role, while the groovy rhythm will have your head instinctively moving along. “Back on the Track” is the song the band chose as the album’s first single and, as they have stated themselves, it was also the starting point for the entire project. An absolutely anthemic and addictive chorus, a very old-school hard rock guitar solo and drums that provide the song with its trademark groove make this one of the album’s most instantly memorable moments.With a playful attitude, SERGEANT STEEL introduce several country touches into “Teeny Meany”, raising the fun factor considerably. At the same time, they prove that they are not afraid to experiment without drifting away from their core hard rock identity. “Hold Your Fire” is one of the album’s finest tracks. The children’s choir in the intro creates a distinctive atmosphere before the composition gradually builds in intensity and leads into yet another characteristic and highly melodic chorus.Halfway through the album comes the obligatory ballad, “Lonely Streets of Broken Hearts”, featuring a subtle jazz influence that transports us to an American pub in the 1960s: low lighting, small tables occupied by couples in love, illuminated by tiny retro lamps, and a spotlight falling on the guitarist and singer on stage. Even though the song is about broken hearts, there is something warm and cinematic about its atmosphere.The romantic mood does not last long, as “Fool For Your Lovin” gets us back on our feet from the very first moment and forces us to sway along to its upbeat chorus. The mid-tempo “Catch the Train” begins with the sound of a train whistle and, with its more straightforward rhythm, stands out from the previous tracks while maintaining the same playful spirit.“Stay With Me” moves into more traditional rock territory, with powerful guitars and an energetic, highly cinematic performance by the excellent Phil Vanderkill. Shortly before the finale, the dreamy guitar intro of “Wireless” transports us once again to another era, gradually developing into a mid-tempo chorus without any major changes in pace, with the emphasis placed firmly on atmosphere and melody.Finally, “Dying Love” opens with keyboards reminiscent of a church organ, before the rest of the instruments gradually enter the picture. The composition eventually builds towards another addictive and uplifting chorus, leaving the listener with the feeling that the album has come to an end exactly as it should.“Golden Absolution” is an album that works best when shared. It is the kind of release that creates a need for company, loud music and, ideally, a live environment where its choruses can be sung by dozens or even hundreds of voices. And perhaps this is the message hidden behind the album’s overall aesthetic: no matter how difficult, fast-paced and demanding everyday life becomes, hardships are easier to overcome when we do not have to carry them alone.
