Bio:

The Scepter is a Heavy-Power Metal band, formed in 2018, in Ottawa, Canada. Drawing influence from bands like Riot, Tokyo Blade, and Helloween, their sound is characterized by harmonized guitars and the soaring vocals of JP Abboud (former singer of Traveler, Gatekeeper, and Borrowed Time, among others) who joined The Scepter in 2025, and recorded vocals for the debut album "Shadows in the Tower". The Scepter have been established as a powerful live act, with many more shows on the way, to support "Shadows in the Tower".Debut full-length album, Shadows in the Tower, on July 24, 2026, through No Remorse Records. The Scepter is a traditional heavy metal band hailing from Ottawa, Canada. Drawing influence from bands like Riot, Tokyo Blade, and Helloween, their sound is characterised by harmonized guitars and soaring vocals.

Album:

When listening to The Scepter’s debut album, it’s easy to see them as a sort of successor to the recently disbanded Traveler. Both projects feature lead vocalist JP Abboud at the helm and opt for a similar blend of speedy heavy metal that emphasizes high pitched wails, and uplifting twin guitars. The presentation on Shadows In The Tower is a bit grittier in comparison to where I find myself thinking that the drums could’ve been brought up more in the mix, but the power metal harmonies aren’t diminished. And with the songs averaging around three to four minutes for a sub-half hour runtime, the album makes for a pretty straightforward listen. “Riding Out” sets up a fast precedent but it seems to really take off around “Protector Of The Skies” while tracks like “Burn Bundy Burn” and “Dunes” offer extra scorching chugs. There are points where the songwriting could afford to be a bit catchier, but a tracks like “Drink On” is rousing enough to stick while “Taarakian Blood” and the closing title track are tight furious bursts. The bonus cover of “Separate Ways” cover is also a neat little touch, exaggerated metalisms and all. While The Scepter may still need a couple more tricks to really stand out in the NWOTHM landscape, Shadows In The Tower is a solid blast that should sit well with fans of the style. The Traveler connections may make for the most immediate attention grabber but the guitar work may ultimately be its strongest asset, especially with how much gets cranked up over its course. There’s room for refinement but also a fair amount of promise for how things could develop.
