Bio:
Axe Victims was a traditional heavy metal band formed in 1982 in Wuppertal, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. They released only one album called "Another Victim" in 1984. It was the highly respected first release on the Mausoleum label. Axe Victims got a first place in the booming Heavy-Rock scene and a big reputation as a kicking live band. They played countless festivals and toured with Lita Ford, Uli Roth and Golden Earring. The critics were enthusiastic and Axe Victims got more and more fans all over Europe. The big magazines like Kerrang or Metal Hammer saw a bright future for the band. Highlight of the spectecular live-show was the appearance of thehengman, who put out his axe with thunder and lighnting everywhere. Critics and fans were waiting for the second album to come, but unfortunately Axe Victims got in trouble with their record label Mausoleum. The company betrayed their bands and got out off business. As a result, all this bands were without a record deal all by a sudden. The band recorded an follow-up to "Another Victim," entitled "Hypnotized," but it was never released. It was recorded at Hermes-Studio in Kamen, West Germany, and mixed by Glenn "Pico" Porconi between 1984/85.
Album:
Axe Victims' Hypnotized is a long-lost 1985 German heavy metal album finally released via High Roller Records in 2025/2026, featuring a "sleeping beauty" charm after forty years. Reviews highlight it as a high-quality, authentic 80s, Teutonic metal gem that surpasses their debut, featuring strong, melodic hooks, fast-paced tracks like "Blood in My Veins," and the powerful title track. After this lengthy introduction, let's get to the actual review. What can this album, which has been spared four decades of influences and changes in music, offer? In terms of songwriting quality, the tracks are in no way inferior to those on the debut album. If anything, the band from Wuppertal has upped its game. The opener and title track alone is enough to blow you away. It continues with the stomping “Rock Tonight,” followed by the fast-paced “Blood in My Veins.” The hooklines are just great. The titles make it clear that they are forty years old and were created in that carefree phase of metal. Sound-wise, the release doesn't quite match the debut album. I suspect that one or two of the tracks were taken over as demos. Whether the sound could have been improved with more intensive mastering remains speculation. But it is still within a range that allows the listening pleasure to unfold fully.Compared to “Another Victim,” the band was more willing to step on the gas on their second album, as evidenced by “Shinin',” for example. It's a shame that Axe Victims split up back then and “Hypnotized” wasn't released. The tunes represented another step forward, and together they could have achieved the status that their colleagues from Warlock, Steeler, and Bonfire enjoy today. In summary, we can only thank Holly, Roland, and Martin for not withholding this work from us. It brings back the spirit of that time in an unadulterated way and makes you feel like you're nineteen again for a moment. For me, it's already a real highlight of 2026. So, from me, it gets top marks!
