Steve Porcaro is an American keyboardist and composer, who was an original member of the rock/pop band Toto. Porcaro wrote or co-wrote at least one song on each of Toto's first six albums, with the exception of Isolation. He left Toto in 1986 after the Fahrenheit album in order to pursue a more full-time songwriting and composing career. Porcaro composed the music for the song "Human Nature" from Michael Jackson's album Thriller, and also played withGary Wright during his tour in 1977, supporting the latter's The Dream Weaver album. However, Porcaro has continued working with Toto in various supporting capacities, assisting with keyboards, drum looping, synthesizers and arranging/composing. He has also done session musician work for many other acts, including Yes (on Union) and Jefferson Airplane (on their self-titled 1989 reunion album). He was also a member of Chris Squire's short lived band, The Chris Squire Experiment, in 1992.Steve Porcaro is currently working on film scores. He collaborated with his daughter Heather Porcaro on her debut album, The Heartstring Symphony, released in 2009. Few musicians have had as wide-ranging an impact on popular music as STEVE PORCARO. As a founding member of TOTO, his synthesizer work helped define an era – on hits like “Africa,” “Rosanna,” and “Hold the Line.” But his influence doesn’t stop there. Steve co-wrote “Human Nature,” one of the most enduring tracks on Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, still the best-selling album of all time, and he became a go-to sound architect for legends from Quincy Jones to Don Henley. His textured, atmospheric programming on songs like “Boys of Summer” and “Dirty Laundry” set the sonic standard for a generation.Beyond the pop charts, Steve has left his mark on film and television, scoring projects from Justified to Dune.Next Friday, Steve continues to push forward. After his first solo album, Someday, Somehow in 2016, he will release the follow-up, titled “The Very Day“, featuring lead vocals from great AOR artists such as Jason Scheff, Michael McDonald and Jude Cole, and impressive musicians like guitar master Mike Landau, Toto’s David Paich, and more.Porcaro wrote and recorded the songs on “The Very Day” with a carefully chosen cast of friends and collaborators, including Michael McDonald, Jude Cole, Gardner Cole and Jason Scheff. With a producer’s ear and a composer’s sensibility, Porcaro approached each track like casting a film — inviting voices and musicians who best served the story of the song. Though he’s never considered himself a lead vocalist, he sings several songs on the album, including “Miss Jane Sinclair”.Porcaro created an incredible album with ‘The Very Day’, and it is even more incredible to think that a lot of the material here started off in the late ’70s / early ’80 as ideas, experiments that he has kept demo cassettes for decades.However, 2025, he made it work, and he put a lot of work into crafting these very good songs. His ultimate goal for the album however is “I just wanted to share it with people, so they could hear it.”
