Unén is a band from Finland that plays modern melodic metal. The band’s music also incorporates elements ranging from progressive to pop, blending intensity with sensitivity in its sound. Unén was originally founded in late 2021, laying the foundation for the band’s musical style. In 2022, Unén focused on composing and refining production independently, resulting in the release of 2 tracks that made it to self-publishing. However, after a rollercoaster year, there was a need to change the lineup to accelerate production.The word “Unén” was derived from the band’s original idea that lyrics would be based on the world of dreams. However, due to lineup changes, this concept took a different direction, but the name remained.In the beginning of 2023, there was a shift in Unén’s lineup due to the change of lead singer, which notably accelerated all activities. The band members coming together was a series of fortunate coincidences and determined searches, including encounters with old acquaintances. The right people had found each other.Unén released their first single “Made of Stone (cover)” in May 2023 with the new lead singer, Stina Girs. She became known during the IDOLS competition in 2011 and subsequently released two albums as a solo artist. The original song by Evanescence inspired this evolved lineup of Unén to showcase their unique sound and overall direction. Following this, the band focused solely on creating their own songs.All members of Unén bring their own expertise and input to the band. Every song created is a sum of its creators, and there is no specific leader. The band members are united by their passion for making music, even though their day jobs are completely different.The recording contract with Frontiers has enabled the band to achieve the channel they sought to release their music to the world.

She later signed a solo contract with Sony Finland, releasing two Finnish-language albums.Forming a hard rock or heavy metal band with a female vocalist is certainly nothing new, and often the results are mixed when the focus is solely on the vocals, neglecting songwriting and production. Fortunately, this is not the case with Finnish band Unén, whose debut album Forever Winter, released on Italian label Frontiers Music, is a work of great quality.The band, the result of a long journey that began years ago and came to fruition with the arrival of the singer (who also contributed to the lyrics and vocal lines), presents an album consisting of 12 very catchy and never banal tracks. A remarkable achievement, especially for a debut, which demonstrates seriousness and compositional professionalism.Although the band claims to be inspired by Evanescence, I personally find comparisons with Sirenia's Ailyn era more fitting, albeit with less dark compositions and more progressive sounds. There are also references to names such as Circus Maximus and fellow Finns Amorphis, especially in the guitar riffs intertwined with keyboards, adding variety and depth to the sound.The lyrics are another strong point: deep, intimate, and full of positive messages, they address issues of personal difficulty and stagnation, but above all the hope of redemption and growth through self-confidence.After listening to it several times, I can say that Forever Winter has convinced me to the point that I want to buy it in physical format. A debut album with no filler tracks, featuring twelve catchy but never predictable songs, which reveal clear teamwork and a strong artistic identity.I highly recommend purchasing this album, and I wish Unén the success they deserve. In the meantime, they have already won over a new fan.
