Bio:
In 2009, Christian Mistress released a 4 song demo cassette, which quickly went on to sell more than 300 copies worldwide. The demo attracted the attention and praise of several underground luminaries and lovers of classic metal including infamous illustrator Dennis Dread, Ajna Offensive curator Tyler Davis and outspoken Darkthrone mastermind Gylve “Fenriz” Nagell who has repeatedly namedropped the band in recent interviews. A two track 7 inch EP was subsequently released further garnering the band underground accolades across the world.Far from being yet another throwback or mere tribute band Christian Mistress’s music is rooted firmly in the present with a respectable and dignified grasp of retrospect. On “Agony & Opium” the band unleash 6 ripping tracks of precision-crafted American Heavy Metal that will set the bar for the modern classic sound that doesn’t simply ride the lightning of past scene glories and aesthetics, but brings new fresh ideas to the genre musically and lyrically. The shredding dual guitar lead trade-offs, performed with the utmost class, never lose sight of memorable songcraft first and foremost. Anchored by a tight, driving rhythm section and the raw and throaty instantly memorable vocal delivery of Christine Davis, the Christian Mistress sound is immediately familiar and yet sounds like no other heavy metal band currently working.Olympia, Washington's Christian Mistress fly in the face of the region's grunge-birthing reputation with a sound representing what was arguably the strongest musical style laid low by the flannel revolution: heavy metal. In fact, since coming together in 2008, band members Ryan McClain (guitar), Oscar Sparbel (guitar), Johnny Wulf (bass), Rueben Storey (drums), and raspy-voiced front-woman Christine Davis (ex-Buried Blood), have set their studded watches back in time, focusing squarely on the raw, unsophisticated musical aesthetic typical of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, circa 1979. This direction was previewed on a 2009 demo and single, earning eager blessings from many underground metal illuminati, most notably 's Fenriz, and paved the way to Christian Mistress' eventual hook-up with the label, which released the band's six-song debut mini-album, Agony and Opium, in 2010.
Album:
4th full-length alabum.Christian Mistress formed back in 2008, just before classic heavy metal revival was becoming all the rage, and they gave us three acclaimed albums. Ten years went by since To Your Death, and I had almost lost all hope for the band, but here they are now with Children Of The Earth. The band is now a quartet, with vocalist Christine Davis, guitarist Tim Diedrich, drummer Reuben Storey and second guitarist/bassist Jonny Wulf. Christian Mistress recorded it in their native Olympia, Washington on 4-track half-inch reel-to-reel at High Command Studio, just like they did with their previous albums. Right from the start, I will say that much of the appeal this has on me is how natural and organic it sounds, and how I can hear mistakes (particularly in how the vocals are recorded) that I believe were left there intentionally to remind the listener that this music was made by humans and not by robots. And it fits the album’s concept, which is the ephemeral character of human existence, but also the impact that this existence can have on future generations.Musically, it is as if not a day went by for the band since they last released an album. Christian Mistress’s knack to combine the spirit and the riffs of NWOBHM with the catchiness and the replayabilty of ‘70s hard rock has remained intact, and their ability in achieving this goal has not diminished one bit. Opening track, “City Of Gold” kicks down the door with energy and speed, “Voiceless” has some great dynamic shifts, “Demon’s Night” has a verse (yes, a verse!) that sticks in your brain like a chewing gum and a surprise ending (I won’t spoil it), the solo of “Love Of The World” is otherworldly, “Mythmaker” brings on the Dio darkness, “Death Blade” has a stellar, almost Van Halen-like riff, “Lake Of Memory” has the most beautiful guitar melody on the album (which is huge praise because the album is full of superb guitar melodies), but my favourite song must be “Shadow” because of the wonderful vocal harmonies and its out-of-the-box structure.Children Of The Earth is a reminder of how difficult and at the same time how rare it is to make great heavy metal music. This style cannot be done by everyone out there convincingly; if it could, we wouldn’t be flooded with all these crap ‘nostalgic’, ‘vintage’, and ‘homage’ bands who don’t know the importance of a riff that instantly makes you pick up your air guitar, or of a chorus that you can sing along to after hearing it just once. Christine Davis’s smoky vocals, the Thin Lizzy-esque dual guitar harmonies, and the whole attitude of doing music that people will want to rock out to is this band’s biggest selling point. You could listen to this album in a club from start to finish, without skipping a single song, and you would have a fantastic night out. These are eight tracks that for other bands would constitute a ‘best of’ compilation; for Christian Mistress, it is just their latest full-length.
