It was but 2019 when THE NIGHT ETERNAL released their bolt-from-the-blue self-titled EP. For a first public recording, The Night Eternal was nothing short of masterful, revealing a depth and wisdom far beyond the band’s meager years. Across its three primary tracks and poignant cover of Judas Priest's "(Take These) Chains" did the German quintet concoct a supremely powerful and stirringly moody sort of heavy metal, both traditionally pure-steel in their dynamics yet also brimming with epicness and a sort of forlorn heroism. Not for nothing did it garner THE NIGHT ETERNAL a handsome amount of attention.Now, with more eyes on them, THE NIGHT ETERNAL emerge from the shadows with their full-length debut, Moonlit Cross. Ever aptly titled, Moonlit Cross moves like a travelogue across the mysteries of the night – and of course, THE NIGHT ETERNAL’s namesake itself. Still night-prowling like that first EP, here on their first full-length salvo do the band reveal more (and more powerful, and moodier) shades of their epic sound, bridging both the epic end of traditional metal as well as the root variants which preceded it.As the band explain, “In comparison to the self-titled EP, on Moonlit Cross we´ve included even more influence from various kinds of guitar-driven rock music, ranging from the ‘70s to the ‘80s, which shaped us as musicians. Combining it with our own sinister style of heavy metal allowed us to exactly create the music we’d been missing in today’s scene. We invite you on a journey to the lowest depths of our hearts.” Indeed, the swagger THE NIGHT ETERNAL exhibit here owes more to early hard rock, invoking such names as Thin Lizzy, Rainbow, Scorpions as well as heavier sounds reminiscent of Mercyful Fate and Black Sabbath´s Dio-era. Yet, familiar as these touchstones may sound, the darkness they so dramatically drape across their compositions puts Moonlit Cross on another realm altogether – and one, it must be said, that evades easy categorization, be it stylistically or chronologically. Simply, THE NIGHT ETERNAL are putting their proverbial hearts on their sleeves, and the music they create is an honest, authentic, and goosebump-inducing reflection of the incredibly vital blood pumping in those hearts.Massive hooks, sweeping dynamics, high drama, and of course, the commanding vocals of frontman Ricardo, all wrapped in a rich ‘n’ robust production by Ralf Praekelt, with mastering by Chris Common at Twin Hills Recording – THE NIGHT ETERNAL have truly arrived with Moonlit Cross.

Album:

The Night Eternal are hailing from Essen Germany. Moonlit Cross is their highly anticipated debut album (it was out in November 5th, through Ván Records), that follows their bolt-from-the-blue self-titled EP that came in 2019. Their music style will seems so familiar to all fans of In Solitude, Ghost, The Devil’s Blood and Iron Maiden as the gothic 70’s and 80’s guitar-driven song structure with the double guitar harmonies has a lot in common with the aforementioned bands. There’s also an epic essence as also many elements that will bring in mind Thin Lizzy, Rainbow, Scorpions, AngelWitch as well as heavier sounds reminiscent of Mercyful Fate and Black Sabbath´s Dio-era. The songwriting is interesting though a notch down to In Solitude or Tribulation but in the same high level as Idle Hands/Unto Others and Lunar Shadow, yet dark, atmospheric and goth as fuck that shows a band that has the potential to become really big in the very few next years. Highlights: “Elysion” with its catchy riffs, the dark “Cloaked In Darkness”, the Maidenisque “The Son Of Sin” , my personal favorite “Shadow’s Servants” and the melodic closer “ Closeness In Suspension” .

Germany’s brooding heavy metallers The Night Eternal are back with their second full length album.“In Tartarus” is not only the lead single, but the opener of this record, which makes sense with its glaring majesty. The gloomy, moody guitars and dancing drums blend melancholia with gallops and those potent vocals with which the bands sound is inseparable from come through magnificently. Little details like some rototoms and clever chord scapes bring out a bright and nostalgic angle in the bands unique brand of heavy metal which feels timeless, classy and powerful. The way in which they take the true 80s spirit and inject those gothic elements and play in a manner of their own is just as strong here as on the previous EP and LP, which are both excellent releases. Those melodies that grip the heart blend with fist-pounding glory as dynamically clear guitars and thundering bass lines ride the waves of rolling drum attacks. Rejoice, The Night Eternal are back on top form.The combination of deeper, sombre moods with soaring and triumphant moments contrast each-other beautifully to give a potent and profoundly exciting blend of feelings that are conveyed with music that is nothing short of magical. Like an eerie summons to the dark spirits, each songs is imbued with a sense of genuinely electrifying mysticism, dedicated to the forbidden paths. Although the archaic heavy metal laws are obeyed to the fullest, with no weak elements in their chain-shattering attack, The Night Eternal are not a band to follow in another set of footsteps by any means. Each vocal line is delivered with such a chilling passion that will linger to haunt you long after the record ends, writhing in spiritual anguish to a sublime sonic backdrop. It is a rare thing that a heavy metal band can be tearjerking in a proudly emotive way without sacrificing the savage and wild spirit of the genre, but The Night Eternal achieve this to some of the most convincing effectiveness I have ever heard.Perhaps the bands strongest asset is their ability to play the simplest of rocking rhythms and add layers of nuances to create something exciting that feels familiar but not recycled. Playing off of the bombastic low end with shimmering leads creates this huge sound that really opens the album up in this huge sound-space while keeping that oppressive sense of dread that plays on the human curiosity to venture further into the night. Indeed, those who fall prey to this recording will find themselves unable to resist the urge to run wild into the unknown. Prepare for a feast of luscious sonic magic that is the epitome of craftsmanship, The Devil’s music rings out in eternity for those who seek it in its undiluted form. That is what is presented to us here.A majestic, wonderful, magical and luminescent return from The Night Eternal. Continuing to forge their own path of resplendent heavy metal shrouded in mystique, emotionality and occultism.
