Album:
Clairvoyant's history goes back to 1989, yet 2015 finds them releasing only their third studio album. The band has created several great songs over the years but their studio efforts have always been partially brought down by weak production and singers with heavy Greek accents. In their third effort, they offer their strongest collection of material, paired with very good production and a renewed line-up, which includes Italian singer Iliour Griften. Griften not only has a much better accent than previous vocalists, but is a hell of a singer, boasting admirable vocal strength not only in his middle register, but also in his, frankly big, upper register. Griften certainly does great justice to the material, which in itself is possibly Clairvoyant's best. The album kicks off with the epic-sounding, wonderfully orchestrated instrumental "Introduction to Forever" - with such an intro, there has to be an epic album following. Sure enough, the first song is "Celestial Dream" (for which an official video has been released), which makes some points clear: for the newcomers, it shows that Clairvoyant is a band that melds together melodic riffing, technically demanding solos and memorable choruses; for the returning listeners, it shows that they sound better than ever, to some extent thanks to the new singer, who doesn't hesitate to demonstrate his vocal prowess from the first second he opens his mouth via a bunch of staggering, climaxing screams. "Theater of Life" is a more laid-back and more complex offering, with several excellent changes. This, and the equally addictive "Break the Embankments" that follows, hammer home the effort placed in both the composition and the execution of the new material. And that basically gives you the idea of how the rest of the album rolls: super-charged power metal, with fine melodies, high vocals and demanding guitar-work. We should give a separate mention to the two guest appearances, that of international shredder Theodore Ziras, which results in the shred-tastic "Fake Hopes", and that of world-renowned singer Goran Edman, who gives an amazing, powerhouse performance on "Forgotten Dreams". It's probably an atypical song for Clairvoyant, but remains a classy slice of melodic hard rock, filled with highly addictive vocal lines, delivered as good as possible by Edman. If there was any justice, this song should have been all over the rock radios by now.The physical edition offers two bonus tracks, in the form of a great cover of Heir Apparent's "Keeper of the Reign" and an updated version of "Future Warning", the excellent closing track of the band's previous release, "Time's Crime" (2009). Both editions, physical and digital, close with another updated version of an older Clairvoyant track, "Stand and Resist", and the wonderful instrumental outro "Farewell to the Past", featuring some beautiful work on the acoustic guitar. With a very solid rhythm section, consisting of long-time bassist Chris Kalavris and new drummer Foivos Andriopoulos, new guitarist Dimitris Stasinos who also did the remixes of the two older songs, excellent new vocalist (and co-lyricist) Iliour Griften whose addition was clearly a wise move as he adds a new dimension to the band's songs, and of course mainman Vaggelis Keramidas, the man who has kept the band alive for all those years, as their leader, main composer and guitarist of a high caliber still shredding like there's no tomorrow, Clairvoyant are flying higher than ever. Older fans of the band will be very pleased with how their new effort has turned out - and for all fans of high-quality guitar-driven power metal out there, Clairvoyant has proven itself to be a very strong entity that is totally worth checking out.
