Bio:
Megadeth is an American thrash metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1983 by guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson, shortly after Mustaine's dismissal from Metallica. A pioneer of the American thrash metal scene, the band is credited as one of the genre's "big four" along with Anthrax, Metallica, and Slayer, who were responsible for thrash metal's development and popularization. Megadeth plays in a technical style often featuring fast rhythm sections and complex arrangements; themes of death, war, politics, and religion are prominent in the group's lyrics. In 1985, the group released its debut album through the independent label Combat Records. The album's moderate commercial success caught the attention of bigger labels, which led to the band signing with Capitol Records. The band's first major label album, Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?, was released in 1986 and was highly influential in the underground metal scene. Despite the album's prominence in thrash metal, frequent disputes between the band members and issues with substance abuse earned the band negative publicity during this period. After the lineup stabilized, Megadeth released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Rust in Peace (1990) and Countdown to Extinction (1992). These albums, along with touring worldwide, helped bring public recognition to Megadeth. The band temporarily disbanded in 2002 when Mustaine suffered an arm injury and re-established in 2004 without bassist Ellefson, who had taken legal action against Mustaine. Ellefson settled with Mustaine out of court and rejoined the group in 2010. Megadeth has hosted its own music festival, Gigantour, several times since mid-2005.As of 2014, Megadeth has sold 50 million records worldwide, with six of its fourteen studio albums certified platinum in the United States, and has received eleven Grammy nominations. The band's mascot, Vic Rattlehead, regularly appears on album artwork, and from 2010 in live shows. The group has experienced controversy over its musical approach and lyricism, including canceled concerts and bans of albums. MTV has refused to play two of the band's videos that the network considered to condone suicide.
Album:
MEGADETH has released their final studio album a few weeks ago, the last installment from one of the ‘big four’.So we decided to make a special compilation including all the cover songs MEGADETH did all over their career, all together into one album titled “Take Cover“.Most of the covers Dave Mustaine & Co. did were from ’70s bands / artists that influenced them in their youth. So we find covers from Alice Cooper, Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Thin Lizzy (though they cover the great ‘Cold Sweat’ from 1983), KISS, Black Sabbath, Diamond Head, etc – but also some oddities such as ‘These Boots’ (as performed by Nancy Sinatra) or ‘I Ain’t Superstitious’ (Willie Dixon, as performed by Jeff Beck). Also included is the just released MEGADETH cover of Metallica’s classic ‘Ride The Lightning’ (co-written by Mustaine). One of the greatest and surprising MEGADETH cover is Sammy Hagar’s ‘This Planet’s On Fire (Burn In Hell)’ originally appeared on Hagar’s 1979 album, ‘Street Machine’. It happens that Mustaine love the Red Rocker voice, and invited him to participate in the cover version, and he we have a Mustaine / Hagar heavy duet.“A lot of people didn’t know Sammy before he did his time in Van Halen,” Mustaine said. “I know him from back when he played in Montrose and, after that, in his solo career. I never really was convinced with the Van Halen tracks because I’d heard Sammy sing on Montrose, and that man can sing … oh, my God. He was one of my favorite singers, forever and ever. I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to do ‘This Planet’s on Fire’ by Sammy?'”At first, Mustaine asked if Hagar might be willing to supply more than just vocals. “I contacted him and asked him, ‘Would you mind singing on it and maybe putting down some guitars?'” Mustaine recalled. “So he came back and said, ‘Sure, I’ll sing on it. I ain’t playing guitar because I heard you two shredders and you just leave the stuff like it is.’ I was really flattered because I think Sammy’s a great guitar player.”“I Ain’t Superstitious,” covered by Megadeth on their 1986 album Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying?, was written by blues legend Willie Dixon. It was originally recorded by Howlin’ Wolf in 1961, however the Megadeth version is heavily influenced by the version done by Jeff Beck, one of Mustaine’s heroes.“Cold Sweat,” covered by Megadeth on their 2013 album Super Collider, was written by Phil Lynott and John Sykes. The song originally appeared on Thin Lizzy’s 1983 album ‘Thunder and Lightning’.Megadeth’s version of “Strange Ways” was written by Ace Frehley of KISS. It is a cover song originally released by KISS on their 1974 album ‘Hotter Than Hell’. Megadeth covered the track for the ‘KISS My Ass: Classic KISS Regrooved’ tribute album in 1994, which was later included in the Warchest compilation.“It’s Electric,” covered & recorded live by Megadeth, was written by Sean Harris and Brian Tatler of the band Diamond Head, a classic form the 1980 New Wave of British Heavy Metal era. Sean Harris appears as guest on this cover.
