Bio:

Tangent Plane is a German progressive power metal band formed in 1996.They released their self-titled debut EP in 1996 and their debut full-length titled Among Grey Masks in 2008.In 2011 they released their first album for 7Hard Records and last album "The Judas Cell" in 2024.

Album:

Third full-length album. It's very theatrical symphonic prog metal with a talented female singer. After looking up the band's info, and based on the production sound here, I'd guess this is an unreleased demo recording. If so, Tangent Plane later changed for the worse, particularly in the vocal department, IMO, and this (un)release showcases what might have been. With TANGENT PLANE, a somewhat more experienced band from the capital city is once again setting out to give new impetus to progressive metal. The band has been active for almost three decades in the broadest sense of the word, but sadly has repeatedly taken long breaks, which for understandable reasons have severely hampered their progress. With their third full-length and first release in a proud 13 years, the Berliners are now looking to attack again and definitely have the right tools at the start to finally establish themselves in the longer term. ‘The Judas Cell’ offers a sometimes wild mix of alternative song structures, intricate stainless steel and very unconventionally staged bombastic material, which is steered in the right direction not least by the impressive voice of Christina Fronista. TANGENT PLANE don't want to commit themselves stylistically in any concrete way, they also put out feelers into the neighbouring genres of progressive metal and find a lot of inspiration there to refine another timeless silver disc. And this mixture is also the trump card of ‘The Judas Cell’. While the overlong opener ‘A Kind Of Friendship’ still sounds like a somewhat more sophisticated version of classic melodic metal, TANGENT PLANE immediately find various niches in which the band can express themselves creatively without having to fit into any particular mould. ‘Rats Between The Toots’ pleases with precise, but also experimental breaks, the balladic title track impresses once again with its great vocal performance, and in tracks like ‘Planescape’ and the over-epic ‘Survival in Practice’, the newcomers show how to celebrate symphonic power metal without handing over the reigns to pomp. I can think of several handfuls of bands that could take a lesson here to bring the otherwise bloated cocktail down to the basics when the song needs it. However, TANGENT PLANE don't really want to be compared in this way, as the band can be sure that they have their own place in the international prog scene that is not based on the usual parallels.‘The Judas Cell’ is an excellent start to an extremely promising third spring. Let's all hope that TANGENT PLANE will stay on the ball a little more steadily this time and that no further events will set the band back. Just in case, we can certainly expect great things from the Berliners!
