Southern California’s Beastmaker was one of my absolute favorite bands over the last couple of years. So, I was supremely disappointed when main man Trevor Church dissolved the occult loving, Sabbath worshipping monsters around a year ago to focus his attention on his newest project, Haunt. For those unfamiliar, Haunt delves more into the NWOBHM feel and 80’s metal sound. Definitely more of a Dio era Sabbath vs. Ozzy era, which typically isn’t my cup of tea, but I have to be completely honest, Haunt kills it, like nobody’s business!Mind Freeze is the band’s 3rd full length (2nd in almost a year) along with a couple of EP's and split singles as well. To say Church and his cohorts are prolific, may be the understatement of the year. Hot on the heels of 2018’s If Icarus Could Fly, Mind Freeze shows the band really flexing their musical chops and diving head-first into the 80’s metal feel. The most obvious addition to this record from the previous is the inclusion and consistent use of the synthesizer, which Haunt uses flawlessly. While I mentioned previously the more similarity to Dio era Sabbath, Mind Freeze may actually owe more to solo era Ozzy than the former, perhaps due to Church’s vocal similarity to the Ozzman.The album opens with the big synth intro and amazingly catchy and harmonic, Light the Beacon, an homage to all of those that are gone and keeping their spirits alive. Hearts on Fire explodes out of the gate with breakneck drums and a superfast tempo that carries more killer harmonies and mind melting solos. The title track follows, Mind Freeze, a rhythmic mid tempo rocker that, maybe because of the synth line, reminds me of Ozzy’s Shot in the Dark. The title track is a killer classic. Synths, double kick drums, and big riffs bring on Divide & Conquer. A pummelling track that also offers a big synth lead breakdown and one of the biggest solos around. An apocalyptic feel permeates the very 80’s metal sound of Saviours of Man, with a double lead guitar and bouncy synth line, this one delivers. The band brings the breakneck tempo back with some amazing guitar work and whiplash drumming on the stellar Fight or Flight. Yet another killer track. The tempo slows, but only momentarily, as the synths and a mighty riff open Have No Fear. With a thumping drive and shouted chorus, there is a welcome bit of Maiden showing on this one. On the Stage follows with a big, guitar heavy intro and more driving rhythm. Voyager closes the record as a cosmic fuelled journey with a big drum and synth intro that turns to a high octane trip to somewhere beyond the stars While I will miss my beloved Beastmaker, Haunt brings the perfect amount of heavy riffage to ease the pain and fill the void. Mind Freeze is a tremendous record and a big step for Church and Haunt. The band seems poised to take their place in the front and lead the charge for Heavy Metal in the new decade! Dig on this!

I learned of Haunt about a year ago thanks to Bandcamp and absolutely adore the galvanizing 80s metal style.They are without a doubt one of the more exciting bands to emerge in recent years all thanks to catchy as hell songs that are full of riffs and guitar solos a plenty.Formed by Trevor William Church, Haunt is more or less a solo project that started back in 2017. Hearing his rigorous anthems could fool anyone easily into thinking he’s been around for decades. With a style similar to bands like Helloween, Iron Maiden, and even early Anthrax, Haunt isn’t a modern day cookie-cutter rock band or gimmicky at all. Honestly, Haunt could easily be mistaken for being part of the original NWOBHM era and Church’s dedication and style is a proper resurgence to be taken seriously.With that said, there is some history behind the creator of Haunt. Church is the man behind Beastmaker and once played in An Angle, a 2000s indie/pop band on Drive-Thru Records. If you can recall either band’s sound, boy are you in for a treat because Haunt sounds nothing like them.Church himself is a busy man. Not only does he rock the title husband and father, but he currently plays in two other bands aside from Haunt. When not recording new tunes, he is revisiting old ones and perfecting his style for the sake of the art.Fun fact, his father is renowned bassist Bill Church who played in Montrose and with Sammy Hagar.Beautiful Distraction is the band’s sixth full-length album and is slated to drop April 2nd under Church’s own label Church Recordings. With just one guest guitarist who supplied some solos, Church wrote and performed all of the songs, recorded, mixed, and mastered it and also had every involvement of manufacturing and marketing. This is beyond a one man show.As much as I have loved the last couple Haunt albums, this one is an absolute ripper. There is so much energy packed into just over 38 minutes that it is almost unfair it did not last longer.Staring things off was album title track “Beautiful Distraction” and all I could think about was how the singing style complimented a young Claudio Sanchez from Coheed & Cambria. I totally got sucked into this song and it made for a strong ass opening track. The solos at the end were to die for. Loved this song a ton.When Church started to tear it up in “In Our Dreams,” all I could do was sit back and enjoy the ride. “Fortune’s Wheel” again had this progressive metal feel to it that was all too enjoyable.The reworked “Fool’s Paradise” was a hell of a journey to listen to. The keys at the start key things feeling a tad retro, but then Church did what he does best and tore it up on a few occasions. This was a fun one with riffs galore.“Hearts On Fire” was another re-recorded full-forced rager that never held up once. I adored the keys buried behind the brutal guitar playing and furious drumming and favor this way more than the original.Church has some serious talent when it comes to creating tunes from start to finish and this album continued to prove it. There was not one dull moment in Beautiful Distraction and nothing sounded recycled, repeated, or cheesy for that matter.As someone who usually finds themselves hanging out in the punk rock genre, Haunt has dropped one of my favorite albums of the year easily. This band is not to be overlooked at all and is guaranteed to entertain.

The brainchild of singer and guitarist Trevor William Church, who may be known for his doom metal outfit Beastmaker, Haunt sit firmly in the more traditional heavy metal sphere. Formed in 2017 by Church as a solo outfit to release music that didn’t fit with Beastmaker’s sound, Haunt has mushroomed with ‘Windows of Your Heart’ the band’s seventh release. Given the two-year pause, this is quite some output.Most of ‘Window of your Heart’ dates to 2021 when Church locked himself away writing in his usual practice. The result is a solid ten track release which is full of melody and up-tempo riffs, with a feel at times more of the kind of proto punk that the likes of The Offspring etc. bring. For those who know Haunt’s music, it may be interesting know that there is less reliance on double tracked guitars, with Church instead adding solos via a single guitar, relying on pinch harmonics and whammy bar as key elements to his delivery.Listening to the album, it’s evident that there’s more of hard rock vibe that full blown metal for much of the album. It’s fast, at times aggressively so, but the overall feel is of more radio friendly music. There are tracks which up the ante of course, with the title track and the Ozzy flavoured ‘Father Time’ amongst the highlights. The musicianship is high quality, with the guitar work particularly impressive.One can imagine that the live version of Haunt can kick some serious ass, for these are songs that are designed to be played live, where they can explode into a heavier, more vibrant entity. With a new band assembled, this will soon be a reality.There is plenty to choose from on this album. ‘Frozen in Time’ features some scintillating guitar work, whilst opening track ‘Mercenaries’ begins slowly before erupting into a frenzied four minutes which gives a solid introduction to the album.I’ve probably not spent enough time with ‘Windows of Your Heart’ but the few plays I have given it have provided a range of influences that combined with decent quality compositions makes it an album that is both enjoyable and entertaining.

“Golden Arm” is the new album from Fresno based musician Trevor William Church, a hyper-melodic and brightly rocking Californian purveyor known as HAUNT. Musically, he proudly flies the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal (NOTHM) flag, mixed with classic, traditional hard rock and a touch of glam. Think Kane Roberts on stereoids.Trevor / HAUNT writes, sing and perform all instruments – except some hot guitar solos by Andy Lei – with ease, and the result is a catchy, melodic collection of songs with an ’80s feeling. But Trevor / HAUNT also assembled a band to perform live shows.Both ”Golden Arm” videos for the tracks ‘Chimera’ and ‘Fight the Good Fight’ (see below) glimpse what a great live band HAUNT is. On the road, Andy Lei (guitar), Sammy Harman (bass), and Andy Saldate (drums) join Trevor. HAUNT will be performing across the US in the spring / summer. If you had the chance of seeing them, go!HAUNT leans into classic metal traditions on ”Golden Arm”. Several songs like “Hit and Run,” “Piece by Piece,” and title track “Golden Arm” feature intros, one of our favorite metal tropes. How much more awesome are ‘Number of the Beast’ and ‘Shout at the Devil’ thanks to their intros? Each track benefits, but also kicks ass on its own.Then “Fight the Good Fight” and “Piece by Piece” add a melodic hard rock groove to the proceedings, also within the vocal performance, giving the album another cool ’80s touch.High energy permeates this record. It’s packed with melodic classic metal / hard rock, full of hooks, hot riffs and screaming solos. The songs have strong choruses and operating with backing vocals for a layering tactic. This certainly is one of Trevor’s strongest abilities, and is used to its advantage here.

Haunt was originally formed by Trevor William Church as a musical project to be worked on alongside his existing band Beastmaker; the project was to take on a traditional metal sound as opposed to Beastmaker's doom metal style. In 2017 Church wrote and recorded Haunt's debut release, the extended play Luminous Eyes, with Daniel Wilson playing drums for the recording. It was first released digitally, as an independent release, but it later received physical releases from the Shadow Kingdom Records label.In 2018, Church wrote and recorded one single for Haunt, Ghosts. Later that same year, Haunt released their first full-length studio album, Burst into Flame. Daniel Wilson returned to play drums for the album, this time as an official band member. Joining Church and Wilson for the album were Matthew Wilhoit on bass and John Tucker on guitar. Both Wilson and Tucker would stay as permanent members, but Wilhoit would be replaced by Taylor Hollman on following releases.In 2019, Haunt released their second EP, (Mosaic Vision) their second studio album, (If Icarus Could Fly) and two split albums. (A Fool's Paradise / On the Streets Again and Sea of Dreams / The Crystal Temple). The following year they released their third and fourth studio albums, titled Mind Freeze and Flashback respectively, as well as the Burst into Demos compilation.

Old school metal band from Fresno, California, known as HAUNT has been releasing their albums every year since 2018, and each show their evolution and prowess. The band’s latest effort, entitled ”Dreamers”, will be released in April 2024, for the first time distributed world-wide.And these guys deserve major exposure for sure. Haunt’s music, and ”Dreamers”, aren’t just a re-harsh from the metal / hard rock classic age, just an influence and with a real own spin on it.Haunt is old-fashioned even as when the LP’s had a running time of half hour. ”Dreamers” whistles by at a rate of knots and at just 32 minutes it certainly feels compact. Old-fashioned metal, however th sound / quality is modern, up-to-date.Each track bursts with a youthful energy and conviction which is something we find sorely lacking in some current classic metal acts.Haunt always had that vintage retro quality of their album cover art and ”Dreamers” isn’t an exception. Musically this album is rocking full throttle driven by wild guitar riffs, melodic vocals and fast drumming, which carry this joyride towards the burning highway.This new album combine the band’s US metal & NWoBHM influences, but this time adds a touch of hard rock groove here and there, inclusive a pinch of classic thrash guitar work on a couple of songs.The catchiness is still there, as well as the ’80s melodies. As proof, Haunt does a cover of the 1983’s Real Life classic single ‘Send Me An Angel’. Metalized of course!These guys never disappoint. ”Dreamers” kicks, bites, entertain, and provides a feel-good time – 30 minutes of its. And rocks!Haunt have a European tour in March 2024, followed by a USA tour in August 2024. Catch ’em live, the are hot.
