Bio:

Canadian metal band ANNIHILATOR is the lifework of guitarist Jeff Waters. Founded in 1984, the band took the metal scene by storm with their debut 1989 release “Alice In Hell”, upped the ante with 1990’s “Never, Neverland” and finished off their 3-record deal (Roadrunner Records/Sony/Epic) with “Set The World On Fire”.While most late-80’s era metal bands disappeared, ANNIHILATOR went on to forge 10 more studio cds, dvds and live releases, all consistently selling well and remaining true to the heavy metal cause. Tours with everyone from Judas Priest to Pantera to Trivium, plus dozens of headlining tours and festivals around the world have been going on steady since 1989 for this band; no rest as the demand for this band never ends. ANNIHILATOR has been touted as one of the best live acts in metal music. High-end musicianship, tight playing and massive energy and fun are what these lads are known for.In 2003, Dave Padden joined the band as vocalist and eventually took on the role of guitar player as well, a la Hetfield. Dave has sung on the last 5 studio releases and has now etched his name in stone as a top front man in the biz.Jeff Waters and company tear through each release with honest, raw power and energy, along with excellent technical skill and a live show that is considered one of the best in the business. Honest melodic thrash and heavy metal, combined with traces of blues, classical and jazz. Hell, there is even some death and punk in there, too.Annihilator has given the metal world a sound that is one of the clearest, most-tasteful mixtures of huge, metal riffs with the idea of the perfect song and some legendary solo shredding as the icing on the cake. Jeff and ANNIHILATOR have been a major influence on countless well-known metal acts and musicians around the world. In fact, countless, successful non-metal acts & musicians cite Waters and Co. as an influence in their careers.2010 saw the release of the best-selling and most critically acclaimed Annihilator cd in over a decade: the self-titled 13th studio cd “ANNIHILATOR”. Touring on this record took the band (as always) to Europe & Canada but also brought huge attendance to a South American run… ANNIHILATOR are back to the continent this May/June and will play again to massive crowds. A European tour is to follow in the fall of 2013.ANNIHILATOR is the biggest-selling Canadian heavy/thrash metal band in Canadian history with close to 2 million units sold. With 24 years of touring history and with a reputation of having one of the strongest live performances in any musical genre, ANNIHILATOR are gearing up for studio release #14; quite a feat for any band in the metal genre and considering Jeff Waters is aged only in his mid-forties.The new ANNIHILATOR release, simply titled “FEAST”, will be released late August 2013 via the UDR/EMI label and will also feature a bonus 15-song cd… a grand total of 24 songs in one cd release package + and incredible 3d artwork cover with the limited edition fan package! Says Waters “We are truly are among the few bands with a long history, that have always waved the flag for honesty, integrity and perseverance in this hard-edge category of music.

Album:

Feast is the fourteenth album by the Canadian heavy metal band Annihilator, released on August 23, 2013 by UDR in Europe and August 27, 2013 in North America. The cover art of the album features Spanish model and presenter Pilar Rubio. The album is the final to feature vocalist Dave Padden, who parted ways with the band at the end of 2014, ending his decade-plus long tenure. The decision came after Padden became fed up with Annihilator's rigorous touring schedule that followed the album's release, leaving him wanting to spend more time with his family.Ok, I should confess, I’m an ANNIHILATORholic, a die-hard fan and possibly not the best reviewer or the most objective person to write an impartial chronic for this album, but I will try this time again. So let me state a solid dogmatic truth, ANNIHILATOR and Jeff Waters are among my preferred artist ever, and I quote some albums as “Alice In Hell” or “Set The world On Fire” as some of my all-time favorites and I’d even cherished dearly “Never Neverland” as an emblematic example of how the 90s Metal should sound. I can also admit that some of the latest releases weren’t in the same standards of quality, but even in the most lackluster of them, I always found some great elements to enjoy and some cool guitar licks to keep my flame burning. Today, Jeff Waters seems to have found (again) a new deal and a new partnership in UDR Music, and starting everything from scratch, so maybe we can expect something as great as the first album for Music For Nation as “King Of The Kill” or something exceptional, as the delivery to honor the early contract with SPV/Steamhammer and the great “Carnival Diablo”? Well, let’s see this track by track. The first song “Deadlock”, is a fun speedy track, very much in the same vein as early SLAYER circa “Show No Mercy” and Dave Padden delivers here his most perfect imitation of a young Tom Araya, only the whole solo part is differential with a real full blasting lead work by the Canadian six strings flying V master. “No Way Out” starts with a very dissonant intro with flanger FX and morphs into a Thrashy riff syncopated, both ingredients are quite typical and very appreciated by your truly, the vocal patterns are also very familiar for the followers of the band, embellished and supplemented by a single chorus line , in the style of "Ultra-Motion" meets “Stonewall”, the mid break that divide the song in half is also classic , but very refreshing with a more Modern melodic motif and the solo spot it’s pure Waters in his most rocking moments. The third track is called “Smear Campaign” and it’s time for a cool kill switch trick mixed with an harsh chromatic chopped lick and it’s another example of how ANNIHILATOR has evolved in the new century since “Refresh The Demon”, with a great blend of Traditional Thrash and some more modernized vocals styling.“No Surrender” with its Funky/Fusion introduction seems a little out of place at first, but the pretty tight surgical Metal riffing is back quickly and Dave Padden delivers a great performance here, and the bridge section is freaky and almost apocalyptic (….”please god help us”) then another fierce solo upon a sharp rhythmic before returning to the Groovy Thrash riffage feast, which I strangely detect in, a few resemblances with FREAK KITCHEN both in the Guitar & the singing style. “Wrapped” this is the AC/DC inspired song and the weakest of the “Feast” album, a simple with some more Punkish vocals that aren’t exactly in my taste, but it’s a tradition in the ANNIHILATOR's career, each album seems to contain more or less this sort of more Alternative / Rock stuff… It still had some nice lead-guitar chops. “Perfect Angel Eyes” is a kind of ballad not epic or powerful just a nice tune and the whole bit, actually recurrent in the contemporary ANNIHILATOR’s albums (initiated with “All For You”), this song possess nevertheless a cool melodic potential even if it will not stand as a major number, once again singer, Dave Padden is showing a great serenity, a nice range and an impressive versatility.Back to basics with "Demon Code" with a furious tempo and a true mechanical main riff enhanced by a Bay Area-underground gimmick as chorus and a slight influence of EXCITER, plus guess what?: Another fine lead unit with even a MAIDENesque harmonized dual part, a true Headbanging cut made by Headbangers for Headbangers. Now, it’s time for a little gem in the same vein as “Sixes And Sevens” or “Alison Hell” with acoustic intro, an hyper high technical playing level, a complicated structure or perhaps a progressive mood and a tortuous theme with an hyper fast double-kick rhythmic, the sound of “Never Neverland” is definitively a great influence here… the gang choir shouting ”…save my soul…lost control” is jubilant: ”Fight The World” indeed a beautiful title for a crushing track…fight. Starting with an highly chorused clean guitar and a melodic bass line with a very good soft vocal layer , this track “One Falls Two Rise” is a very interesting canvas where Jeff seems to find a new inspiration like VOLBEAT meets AVENGED SEVENFOLD, but suddenly it became another Thrashing monster with an abundance of sharp axe and a great shouting choir , the structure is very weird and the ANNIHILATOR stamp is firmly branded… Along with “Fight The World” & “No Way Out” this is the perfect triumvirate. The collector item deluxe hard-book version with a 3D cover will also feature a Bonus CD “Best Of Annihilator“ containing Fifteen songs, for a grand total of twenty four tracks in one package: The perfect listening companion to “Feast” for the beginners and a great reminder alarm for those who have forgotten about the mighty Jeff Waters. The vocalist David James Padden, already proved his talent (2010’s “Annihilator” or “Schizo Deluxe” in 2005) but I think that with this album, he will stand as strong as ex legendary frontmen: Coburn Pharr (ex-OMEN / ex-PRISONER) or Joe Comeau (LIEGE LORD / ex-TAD MOROSE) in the metallic wall of fame or in the Heavy Metal collective. In fact, "Feast" is like the genuine essence of what this band is all about, Strong musical skills mixed with anger, that leads to a pure and unadulterated Metal feast: Maybe the most coherent and impressive album in the ANNIHILATOR modern day era.

Album:

An entryway to a freak show is unexpected, dangerous even, who knows what shapes and images that mind will be setting in. After getting out of hand with the “Suicide Society”, it was probably a good timing to get back to the drawing board of the human mind, take back the cool features of the brain that have always been a potential attraction. Work and play without really being there, that is the spirit. Throughout the decades of the Canadian ANNIHILATOR, featuring their respectful leader Jeff Waters, the general joint conclusion was that insanity has its magical moments. It might be a crypt of some of the deadliest deeds and sceneries that could be battered out of a human being, but also a place of comfort, an out of body experience that has the knack of being endless, even if subdued. Unfortunately, there is no Alice, but there enough of the demented stuff to take you on yet another journey through the course of thoughts that would better not surface in real life in “For The Demented”, via Silver Lining Music.I took the time to read the statements about this album, even though its diverse style has already been known to me. Back to the grizzled game has been a common ground among long lasting bands, to restart the old energies, and check out if there is enough juice to ride with. Apparently, Waters and Co. had everything they need in order to retrace previous footsteps and put the blast into the past. In the course of their time machine travel, ANNIHILATOR never put aside some of the modern aspects that took a stature as means of their evolution, especially in the last decade or so, such as the groove element that took a hard bite at the riffs for instance. Amassing the old and the new, sewn together like a freshly made rag doll, resulted in an interesting exploration, melodic Speed and Thrash Metal fashioned by the band’s heritage along with stints out of the box to rattle the cage, into different universes of music.Call me sentimental, but this time I am starting out with the softer touch. “Not All There” is an all-out ANNIHILATOR. It is a perfect unification of the first several albums, channeling the special atmosphere created with the human brain as main. Furthermore, the attributing of compelling heaviness portrayed by amazing riffs along, gets a fine mix with a few surprises along the way coming different varieties of Rock direction along with emotional motifs. This is a major hit, a special song that should last for ages. This is what I see as an all-around artist people. Continuing with the tenderhearted type, or is it? I never thought that I would ever again come across such a ballad out of this band as “Pieces of You”. This is a highly special mix of the softness of “Sounds Good To Me” / “In The Blood” along with a deadliness that is immensely soothing, a pictorial of insanity that is off the charts and a bit meaty. “The Way” is another jackpot, a derailing Hardcore oriented grooving with a shot of Punk end up being a cool Hard Rock meets Metal. Waters with one of his better singing performances of late, commanding over an 80s kind of MOTLEY CRUE with swings, employing late 60’s Rock N’ Roll jive with great soloing. If insanity is what you were looking for, this one takes the pick. “Altering the Alter” as if spawned off the “Refresh The Demon” or “Alice In Hell” albums, a strong lyrical tune, the keyboards along with the mixed riffing surely made an impact on the road into dissonance. A hell of a deranged tune, one of the album’s cleverest. Lastly, I think that Waters made a genius effort on this one, an official return back to the early days with an eruption of a gruesome attitude, attacking at will, “Twisted Lobotomy” demonstrates the madness that served the debut album with a few pieces of the sophomore. The riffs are complex, destructive, brutal with a smelting sense of melody. I recommend to take shots of: “One to Kill” and “Phantom Asylum”.After the social crumble of 2015, “For The Demented” came as an utmost blessing, a crucial moment in ANNIHILATOR’s career in my view, and a wonderful turning point that would sound better and better on each listen. Don’t expect mere Thrash Metal guys, this guy has more up his sleeves than mere head bashing and skull breaking. This is what I have been waiting for.

Album:

Canadian thrash/heavy metal veterans ANNIHILATOR have lacerated many senses over the years with their supreme, aggressive metal mastery, and on January 27, 2017, their legion of loyal fans can look forward to a series of fresh sensory experiences as ANNIHILATOR proudly presents "Triple Threat", a three-disc collection of ANNIHILATOR's music in a trio of very different scenarios. The main disc comprises a set of ANNIHILATOR's classics performed acoustically, with band leader/guitarist/ songwriter and vocalist Jeff Waters bringing together band members Aaron Homma and Richard Hinks, Vancouver drummer and friend Marc LeFrance plus Ottawa session player Pat Robillard. Recorded and mixed by Waters (with Marty Sobb), this quintet laid everything down live, off the floor and in single takes at Watersound Studios in Dunrobin, Canada during late May and early June, 2016, giving Waters one of the most challenging, satisfying and perhaps "electric" creative moments in his career. The second disc will feature ANNIHILATOR's vicious set from the 2016 Bang Your Head!!! festival, a set which illustrates the very best of what ANNIHILATOR is known for — tight, sharp, technically excellent and melodic thrash metal music. It will also contain some exclusive inside-ANNIHILATOR off-stage perspective, courtesy of Jeff Waters's own camera, which captures further elements, flavors and detail of the band which fans will flip over."This was one of the coolest things I have done in my long career," says Jeff. "Having five people in a room, from all different backgrounds and talents, coming together to play songs from the past and to try to sound like we are one but totally live and with feel."This was one of the biggest challenges that ANNIHILATOR has faced, musically, but what impressed me the most was how you can hear all the individual styles each player has and how we were able to glue the playing and feel together. Done all in one take and with all the musical blemishes and imperfections that I would never normally let slide!"This set covers some of the melodic songs, one even from 1984 (when a few of these guys were not even born!) and I just had to do this once in my life… to challenge myself and maybe show some others that it's not always just about the metal and the thrash! Rock 'n' roll and ballads are found everywhere in heavy metal."ANNIHILATOR are made up of a helluva lot of styles, mixed into one. That's exactly what kind of musicians I put together for this set… a mixed bag of rockers and metalheads and they made our legacy proud!"Enjoy… we sure love this one.""Triple Threat" will be available in several formats, including DVD/2CDs, Blu-ray/2CDs, a 2CD audio-only and digital download.

Bio:

Annihilator is a Canadian thrash metal band founded in 1984 by guitarist Jeff Waters and vocalist John Bates. They are the highest-selling Canadian thrash metal group in history, having sold more than three million albums worldwide, although most of their sales have been generated outside the band's home country. Along with Sacrifice, Voivod and Razor, Annihilator is credited as one of the "Big 4" of Canadian thrash metal. They are also considered to be part of the second wave of thrash metal bands from the late 1980s and early 1990s, along with Sepultura, Sacred Reich, Flotsam and Jetsam and Dark Angel as well as Bay Area thrash metal acts Testament, Forbidden, Death Angel and Vio-lence.Since its inception, Annihilator has released sixteen studio albums and has undergone many line-up changes. Waters is the only remaining original member left in the band, and usually assembles touring or session musicians to perform with him. Annihilator's first two studio albums—Alice in Hell (1989) and Never, Neverland (1990)—are considered to be influential Canadian heavy metal records.[6] Many of their later albums—including their third, and only major-label, album Set the World on Fire (1993)—also received high praise from critics, and enjoyed some success in Europe and Japan.Their recent studio album, Ballistic, Sadistic, will be released on January 24, 2020.

Album:

ANNIHILATOR they’re also part of the second wave of thrash metal bands from the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, along with SEPULTURA, SACRED REICH, FLOTSAM AND JETSAM & DARK ANGEL as well as Bay Area thrash metal acts TESTAMENT, FORBIDDEN, VIO-LENCE, etc… ANNIHILATOR’s first 3 albums, Alice In Hell, Never, Neverland and Set the World on Fire were classic thrash metal albums that any thrash-head should be accustom to.Then in 1994 with the album King of the Kill, ANNIHILATOR’s sound shifted to modern metal for the rest of their career. For the next thirteen albums from 1994 to 2017 has mostly been very average or even mediocrity on each album. Except the albums Carnival Diablos and Schizo Deluxe being the only two stand outs from that time period. Both of those albums delivering multiple bangers and being consistently good through out the LP. The last two albums, in 2015 & 2017, were a very low point and the weakest material when it came to ANNIHILATOR so my hopes for this new 2020 album was not high! As you might be able to tell I have a love/hate relationship with this band. I love ANNIHILATOR and Jeff Waters but I think dude could be writing better albums than he has been!2020 brings us another year of Metal and the 17th album from ANNIHILATOR entitled Ballistic, Sadistic! Jeff Waters has enlisted Fabio Alessandrini to handle the drum duties for the album, while he handles the rest. Right from the start Jeff Waters is not playing around and goes straight for the throat! The opening track “Armed to the Teeth” is an aggressive head-banger to get this started off in the right direction! The next two songs “The Attitude” and “Psycho Ward” are ok with some corny lyrics that you’ve heard come from Jeff Waters in the past few albums. Tracks 4 “I Am Warfare”, they get right back to playing a faster and aggressive tune. Track 5 “Out with the Garbage” my jaw dropped, probably the best song I’ve heard Jeff Water write in a very, very long time. If he could write a whole album with this punishing tempo, the more technical riffs and head-banging groove, it’d put ANNIHILATOR right back on top in the scene! Then the album takes a dive for a few songs and these could’ve left off the album! Song number 8 “One Wrong Move” gets things back on track with a decent song. Track 9, ugh…skip. Finishing off the album track 10 Jeff Water again lets you know that ANNIHILATOR is still a band to be reckoned with! “The End of the Lie” is right there with track 5 as an absolute banger! This album is a must listen for the tracks “Armed to the Teeth”, “Out with the Garbage” and “The End of the Lie”! Half the album is damn good and the other half is blah! This is the best thing they’ve done since the Schizo Deluxe album!

Album:

At best, familiarity breeds indifference, which may be why ANNIHILATOR remain such a perennially underrated force for metallic good. Guitarist and founder Jeff Waters has made a virtue of sticking to his own, ferociously focused script, and while the Canadians have traversed plenty of diverse territory over the decades, it's albums like 2007's all-star cameo-fest "Metal" that most accurately sum up their wildly entertaining blend of utmost precision and giant, grin-inducing metal tunes. Given the opportunity to re-work one of his less celebrated records, Waters has turned it into an even bigger and more explosive celebration of the ANNIHILATOR sound. All the original guest soloists and vocalists remain intact, but this is more than just a cautiously tweaked upgrade. Instead, legendary engineer Mike Fraser (AC/DC, VAN HALEN and many more) has deftly blended the old album's key components with brand new drum tracks provided by former SLAYER legend Dave Lombardo, and a whole set of reworked vocals by INTO ETERNITY's Stu Block (who, considering how the ICED EARTH story panned out, arguably deserves a decent break at this point). Combine all that with a heavier and more organic sound and "Metal II" more than justifies its second crack at the whip. The highlights are the same as before, but with added emotional oomph. In particular, Alexi Laiho's guitar explodes on both "Downright Dominate" and a blistering cover of VAN HALEN's "Romeo Delight": both exhilarating and poignant. The ageless Dan Beehler shreds his larynx over Waters's balls-out take on EXCITER's "Heavy Metal Maniac" — it's just like 1985 all over again. Elsewhere, "Haunted" is an obnoxiously turbocharged thrash rager, with a magnificent lead break from Jesper Strömblad (THE HALO EFFECT/ex-IN FLAMES), and "Couple Suicide" brings ARCH ENEMY icon Angela Gossow together with Toronto's high priest of huge rock DANKO JONES, with predictably raucous and intense results. Best of the lot, "Kicked" dares to dig a little deeper into ANNIHILATOR's sonic arsenal, with a woozy, alt-metal intro and some of the gnarliest, spikiest riffs on the whole record. Throughout it all, Block wails, shrieks and growls as if these songs were always intended for his eccentric talents. With rumblings of a huge ANNIHILATOR reissue campaign growing louder, "Metal II" feels like an excellent entry point for diehard fans and newcomers. The title tells you what to expect. The album delivers. Your neck is going to hurt.
