Flotsam and Jetsam is a thrash metal band that formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1981.The group was founded in 1981 under the name “Paradox” by drummer Kelly David-Smith and guitarists Pete Mello and Dave Goulder, who were later joined by bassist Jason Newsted. Jason had answered a newspaper ad that Kelly had placed in the local newspaper looking for a bass player. Jason came to Phoenix with his band "Gangster" from Michigan on their way to California, but Gangster broke up while in Phoenix. Kelly got a call from a couple of his high school friends, Mark Vasquez and Kevin Horton, looking for some people to jam with playing covers of bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, MSG, and UFO. The band then morphed into “Dredlox” together with the new recruits, Jason was now the main vocalist.Kelly saw "A.K." (Eric A. Knutson) singing "The Goodbye Girl" at his high school talent show. In 1982 they were in the same summer school class and Kelly asked Knutson if he wanted to audition. They put him on 2-week probation and he later joined the band. Due to the provisional nature of his membership, the band referred to Knutson as "the 2 weeker." Ed Carlson, from another local rival band called Exodus (not to be confused with the California Bay Area thrash metal band of the same name), also joined in 1983 after Kevin departure from the band. The name of the band changed into "The Dogz", but it didn't last long. Eventually the band renamed itself 'Flotsam and Jetsam' after writing a song inspired from a chapter of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Two Towers.The band made its live debuts in local clubs and in California and had the opportunity to play with bands such as Megadeth, Armored Saint, Alcatrazz, Malice, Exciter, Mercyful Fate, Riot, Autograph. In 1985 Mark Vasquez stepped out and 17-year-old Michael Gilbert joined the band. Flotsam and Jetsam released two demo tapes Iron Tears and Metal Shock in 1985.They created their first video Hammerhead from the Metal Shock demo: "We taped it in Jason and Ed's apartment living room. We also made a live video at the infamous Bootlegger in Phoenix",(owned by Gloria Cavelara "1985", currently married to Max Cavelera) These videos and the band's demos made a good impression on record labels. After the band contributed to the Speed Metal Hell II and Metal Massacre VII compilations, they then signed a deal with Metal Blade Records.Michael Spencer stepped out shortly after the European tour, his replacement was Troy Gregory, in May of the next year the band released its second opus No Place for Disgrace. According to Michael Spencer, No Place for Disgrace was going to be called Blessing in Disguise, but after his departure, Flotsam's former A&R Michael Alago let Metal Church (who was also on Elektra at the time) use that name for their third album, which was eventually released in February 1989.[6] No Place for Disgrace includes a cover of Elton John's hit "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" and therefore a video was shot. The band opened for King Diamond in America and supported Megadeth, Testament and Sanctuary in Europe on the So Far, So Good... So What! tour.Flotsam and Jetsam signed a new deal with mega-giants MCA/Universal in 1989 and began work on their third album When the Storm Comes Down, released in May 1990. The band expected to gain recognition with this album, but it suffered from a variety of mixed reviews.In June 2013 the band headlined at the Warriors of Metal Festival in Columbus Ohio, then returning home, Flotsam hired manager Jeff Keller(JKM). His roster includes the likes of: UDO, Destruction, Lordi, Hirax, Primal Fear, Satan, Suicidal Angels.In 2006 after the successful remix and master of the debut album “Doomsday for the Deceiver”, there was a lot of fan requests to have “No Place for Disgrace” follow the same process. After spending some time at the 25 year mark, the band decided to go forward with this idea. The band had some issues with the original production and definition of some of the parts played, due to the speed it was recorded at. Having had success with Ugly Noise through the PledgeMusic process, the band would be able to again gain the rights to this classic with a re-recording and some minor changes.In the middle of 2013 Flotsam embarked in this monumental task of reviving some songs that for the most part hadn’t been played in 20 years. All tracks (except drums) were done at the Flotsam studio with Michael Gilbert at the helm. In December the project was finished and the re-recording of the classic album "No Place For Disgrace", was again released using PledgeMusic to finance the project.The album, No Place For Disgrace 2014, is set to release on Feb 14th, 2014 world wide through Metal Blade Records distribution. NPFD will feature some of Flotsam's friends from the past as guest musicians, Mark Simpson, Chris Poland, Tory Edwards.Flotsam is currently ramping up for their (29 show) European tour with Sepultura, Legion of the Damned and Mortillery. The tour kick's off on Feb 7th in Bochum, Germany.

When the Storm Comes Down is the third studio album by Flotsam and Jetsam, released in 1990. It was the last album with Troy Gregory on bass guitar. Gregory left in 1991 to join the New York based urban metal band Prong.It was re-released on June 10, 2008, by Metal Mind Productions. This release is remastered with a bonus track and limited to 2000 copies. The re-release also contains new packaging and liner notes from the band members Eric A.K. and Ed Carlson.Whoo. When my friend first popped this album in since she had just bought it as a blind purchase from a bargain bin, I had no idea what to expect. Most likely boring paint by numbers thrash. But instantly it hit me, this was thrash, and maybe average to most, but the riffs were just knocking my socks off the entire time. I enjoyed every song, and just when I thought it couldn't get better, it did. This is mostly due to:THE RIFFS. Holy hell they are catchy, same kind of style a band like Pro-Pain would use for an instant hook. Only difference is a riff is never played too long as song will always keep you interested in what's next or if the kick ass riff you just heard will come back around. Just like any good thrasher.THE BASS. Yes. They really nailed it here with superb production and a thick bass tone that is right with every mammoth riff. Excellently played and the album uses this to maximum potential.The only negative of the album would be Eric A.K.'s fucked up voice. At first I thought I'd have to deal with an Agent Steel/Helstar kind of wailer, after hearing the big entrance scream in The Master Sleeps (i think that's track 1) but eventually he calmed down into a better than average thrash vocalist. Granted he would get MUCH better on the next album, but here he is tolerable thanks to the excellent music. If you dig F&J, GET THIS.

It's not all that uncommon these days for veteran thrash and heavy metal acts to offer up re-recordings of particular albums, or even to throw together a compilation of hand picked tracks that have been reworked in a studio to give the modern fanbase a taste of what their classic material should sound like when brought up to the standards of their recent fare. Perhaps it's a bunch of songs the band uses live, and they want kids to be able to grab the newer versions to play on their .mp3 players with more compression. Whatever the cause, it generally fails, and also serves to confuse and convolute a legacy best appreciated through experiencing the originals, for all their flaws. That's not ALWAYS the case...for instance, I rather dug Destruction's ironclad Thrash Anthems re-recordings, the songs seemed to work in the context of their modern hits like those found on The Antichrist. But the odds, they are against it.I consider Flotsam & Jetsam's sophomore No Place for Disgrace (1988) to be their seminal work, unrivaled by anything else they've ever recorded. Maybe they felt the same, since they saw fit to spend the effort re-recording it. Granted, if I had one complaint about the original, it would have been in the production department, since it just doesn't hold up quite like other albums I own from its era. The guitars and bass seem a little thin, and it's lacking some punch. However, the fantastic tracks there easily overcame, and continue to overcome such nitpicking, and that's sort of what I meant above. It's 'flawed', but despite that one of the more memorable second tier US thrash albums of its day and age. I didn't hold out a lot of hope for this remake once becoming aware of it, because this is just not a band that has really delivered consistently, and I expected them to flub it up. They've had a couple good songs strewn about their substantial discography of the 90s and 00s, but they were vastly outnumbered by all of the disappointments. Reviewing this now, after hearing their latest eponymous disc, which I actually enjoy, I think they might also have been trying to fire up some inspiration by revisiting this material...And to its credit, the 2014 No Place for Disgrace doesn't suck. It's not good, not even really worth the while, but I've certainly heard bands shit all over their histories, when this is just sort of taking a long leak on one. The rhythm guitars are 'richer' and have a little more punch commensurate with their most recent material, and certainly this lacks some of the issues with the original. But it also springs up more...Flotsam & Jetsam just doesn't sound as vital and hopeful as they once were. Part of this is in Eric A.K.'s performance, which doesn't seem as engaging or high pitched as it once felt. He's firing for a wider range on these recordings, and a long-time fan will notice the gulfs where he missed the mark at some of those critical moments. The clarity of several guitars seems to have leeched the speed from a number of the riffs, and this might even have been intentional, I didn't sit there keeping pace with both simultaneously, but the vivacious energy is missing, especially during slower parts like the the breakdown in "N.E. Terror" which feels like a slog, and in which Knudson's voice does seem a little processed (as it does elsewhere here).Now, there are a few sequences in which the remake does feel solid, as in the intro to "I Live You Die", but even there I don't think I'd choose this over the old one. The drums and bass are much better balanced, especially the latter, which is all over the thing...so I might not have reminded a 'remaster', maybe using this bassist (he had appeared on a prior demo, but only rejoined the band for this and their new album). On the whole, though, this just feels like a band trying to tap into a prior impulse and coming up slightly short. It's not offensive, and a lot of the note patterns come together with that same magic they once did, yet I don't really think I'd ever require another listen to this after jotting down some thoughts. Fortunately, the band has since produced some newer material which is a lot more exciting to me, but I hope there are no plans to give Doomsday for the Deceiver such a treatment.

Arizona metallers FLOTSAM AND JETSAM will release their new, self-titled album in April. FeMetal TV creator Phoenix Romero spent some time over the weekend hanging out with FLOTSAM AND JETSAM singer Eric "A.K." Knutson and getting a preview of the LP, which will include such songs as "Seventh Seal", "Iron Maiden", "Creeper", "Verge Of Tragedy", "Legion Of The Famed", "Time To Go" and "Forbidden Territory", the latter of which was originally slated for the band's second album, 1988's "No Place For Disgrace", but did not make the cut.Knutson told From Hero To Zero last summer about the band's forthcoming follow-up to 2012's "Ugly Noise": "The new record has songs that sound like they came from the '80s, some songs that sound like they came from the middle of our career, and some songs that sound like they're brand new, and they're all on one record together."FLOTSAM AND JETSAM in 2014 parted ways with guitarist Edward Carlson and bassist Jason Ward and replaced them with Steve Conley and Michael Spencer, respectively. The band also recruited SHADOWS FALL drummer Jason Bittner after Kelly Smith left the group in November 2014 to focus on caring for his family.Spencer stated about the new FLOTSAM AND JETSAM material: "There's a great, old-school thrash vibe going on with the direction of the songs and what originally influenced the band, mixed with a little of what we like about today's sound, in metal."Flotsam and Jetsam are band I have had mixed feelings about over the years. Having been a huge thrash fan most of my life, and a huge fan of Metallica back in the day, there was no avoiding checking these guys out. Their first two albums, Doomsday For the Deceiver and No Place For Disgrace, remained staples for me back then, but after that they lost me. A lot had to do with their shift in style than anything else. The band have released a number of albums over the years, with several line-up changes and periods of dormancy. Ugly Noise was the last album I heard that gave me moments of interest in them again, but it still never lived up to their potential, even if that potential has been more or less invisible for a few decades. With the release of their latest s/t album, I figured I’d give them one more chance before I totally wrote them off.Flotsam and Jetsam the album is a return to what made them so great back in the day, playing very heavy and intricate thrash metal. Finally the band seems to be back on track with a more honest and organic sound than trying to remain current. Not to say that their sound is stilted and locked in the 80’s; on the contrary the band sounds more current staying true to their roots than they ever did chasing a trend. Songs like “Iron Maiden,” “Seventh Seal,” “Creeper,” “Time To Go,” and “LOTD” are brash, in your face, aggressive, and instant heavy metal classics. The band seems to have a renewed vigor for their music, and this whole album is the best thing they have done in many decades, if not ever.I was expecting to walk away hating this album, and nearly passed on it with the disappointment I felt for their last one. I’m glad I gave them one more chance. Flotsam and Jetsam, band and album alike, are finally reaching their potential all these years later. As the saying goes, “Better late than never,” couldn’t be more true to this album. It’s as if they heard what I said in my review of Ugly Noise and corrected everything I had issue with. I’m sure that’s not the case, but whatever it is that enabled them to create this magnificent album, I hope they keep it going

Jason had answered a newspaper ad that Kelly had placed in the local newspaper looking for a bass player. Jason came to Phoenix with his band "Gangster" from Michigan on their way to California, but Gangster broke up while in Phoenix. Kelly got a call from a couple of his high school friends, Mark Vasquez and Kevin Horton, looking for some people to jam with playing covers of bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, MSG, and UFO. The band then morphed into “Dredlox” together with the new recruits, Jason was now the main vocalist.Kelly saw "A.K." (Eric A. Knutson) singing "The Goodbye Girl" at his high school talent show. In 1982 they were in the same summer school class and Kelly asked Knutson if he wanted to audition. They put him on 2-week probation and he later joined the band. Due to the provisional nature of his membership, the band referred to Knutson as "the 2 weeker." Ed Carlson, from another local rival band called Exodus (not to be confused with the California Bay Area thrash metal band of the same name), also joined in 1983 after Kevin departure from the band. The name of the band changed into "The Dogz", but it didn't last long. Eventually the band renamed itself 'Flotsam and Jetsam' after writing a song inspired from a chapter of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Two Towers.The band made its live debuts in local clubs and in California and had the opportunity to play with bands such as Megadeth, Armored Saint, Alcatrazz, Malice, Exciter, Mercyful Fate, Riot, Autograph. In 1985 Mark Vasquez stepped out and 17-year-old Michael Gilbert joined the band. Flotsam and Jetsam released two demo tapes Iron Tears and Metal Shock in 1985.They created their first video Hammerhead from the Metal Shock demo: "We taped it in Jason and Ed's apartment living room. We also made a live video at the infamous Bootlegger in Phoenix",(owned by Gloria Cavelara "1985", currently married to Max Cavelera) These videos and the band's demos made a good impression on record labels. After the band contributed to the Speed Metal Hell II and Metal Massacre VII compilations, they then signed a deal with Metal Blade Records.Michael Spencer stepped out shortly after the European tour, his replacement was Troy Gregory, in May of the next year the band released its second opus No Place for Disgrace. According to Michael Spencer, No Place for Disgrace was going to be called Blessing in Disguise, but after his departure, Flotsam's former A&R Michael Alago let Metal Church (who was also on Elektra at the time) use that name for their third album, which was eventually released in February 1989.[6] No Place for Disgrace includes a cover of Elton John's hit "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" and therefore a video was shot. The band opened for King Diamond in America and supported Megadeth, Testament and Sanctuary in Europe on the So Far, So Good... So What! tour.Flotsam and Jetsam signed a new deal with mega-giants MCA/Universal in 1989 and began work on their third album When the Storm Comes Down, released in May 1990. The band expected to gain recognition with this album, but it suffered from a variety of mixed reviews.In June 2013 the band headlined at the Warriors of Metal Festival in Columbus Ohio, then returning home, Flotsam hired manager Jeff Keller(JKM). His roster includes the likes of: UDO, Destruction, Lordi, Hirax, Primal Fear, Satan, Suicidal Angels.In 2006 after the successful remix and master of the debut album “Doomsday for the Deceiver”, there was a lot of fan requests to have “No Place for Disgrace” follow the same process. After spending some time at the 25 year mark, the band decided to go forward with this idea. The band had some issues with the original production and definition of some of the parts played, due to the speed it was recorded at. Having had success with Ugly Noise through the PledgeMusic process, the band would be able to again gain the rights to this classic with a re-recording and some minor changes.In the middle of 2013 Flotsam embarked in this monumental task of reviving some songs that for the most part hadn’t been played in 20 years. All tracks (except drums) were done at the Flotsam studio with Michael Gilbert at the helm. In December the project was finished and the re-recording of the classic album "No Place For Disgrace", was again released using PledgeMusic to finance the project.The album, No Place For Disgrace 2014, is set to release on Feb 14th, 2014 world wide through Metal Blade Records distribution. NPFD will feature some of Flotsam's friends from the past as guest musicians, Mark Simpson, Chris Poland, Tory Edwards.Flotsam is currently ramping up for their (29 show) European tour with Sepultura, Legion of the Damned and Mortillery. The tour kick's off on Feb 7th in Bochum, Germany.

Arizona metallers FLOTSAM AND JETSAM will release their new, self-titled album in April. FeMetal TV creator Phoenix Romero spent some time over the weekend hanging out with FLOTSAM AND JETSAM singer Eric "A.K." Knutson and getting a preview of the LP, which will include such songs as "Seventh Seal", "Iron Maiden", "Creeper", "Verge Of Tragedy", "Legion Of The Famed", "Time To Go" and "Forbidden Territory", the latter of which was originally slated for the band's second album, 1988's "No Place For Disgrace", but did not make the cut.Knutson told From Hero To Zero last summer about the band's forthcoming follow-up to 2012's "Ugly Noise": "The new record has songs that sound like they came from the '80s, some songs that sound like they came from the middle of our career, and some songs that sound like they're brand new, and they're all on one record together."FLOTSAM AND JETSAM in 2014 parted ways with guitarist Edward Carlson and bassist Jason Ward and replaced them with Steve Conley and Michael Spencer, respectively. Having been a huge thrash fan most of my life, and a huge fan of Metallica back in the day, there was no avoiding checking these guys out. Their first two albums, Doomsday For the Deceiver and No Place For Disgrace, remained staples for me back then, but after that they lost me. A lot had to do with their shift in style than anything else. The band have released a number of albums over the years, with several line-up changes and periods of dormancy. Ugly Noise was the last album I heard that gave me moments of interest in them again, but it still never lived up to their potential, even if that potential has been more or less invisible for a few decades. With the release of their latest s/t album, I figured I’d give them one more chance before I totally wrote them off.Flotsam and Jetsam the album is a return to what made them so great back in the day, playing very heavy and intricate thrash metal. Finally the band seems to be back on track with a more honest and organic sound than trying to remain current. Not to say that their sound is stilted and locked in the 80’s; on the contrary the band sounds more current staying true to their roots than they ever did chasing a trend. Songs like “Iron Maiden,” “Seventh Seal,” “Creeper,” “Time To Go,” and “LOTD” are brash, in your face, aggressive, and instant heavy metal classics. The band seems to have a renewed vigor for their music, and this whole album is the best thing they have done in many decades, if not ever.I was expecting to walk away hating this album, and nearly passed on it with the disappointment I felt for their last one. I’m glad I gave them one more chance. Flotsam and Jetsam, band and album alike, are finally reaching their potential all these years later. As the saying goes, “Better late than never,” couldn’t be more true to this album. It’s as if they heard what I said in my review of Ugly Noise and corrected everything I had issue with. I’m sure that’s not the case, but whatever it is that enabled them to create this magnificent album, I hope they keep it going

Doomsday for the Deceiver is the debut album by Flotsam and Jetsam. It was released on July 4, 1986, on a budget of $12,000, and recorded in two weeks.It is the only album by Flotsam and Jetsam with Jason Newsted before his departure for Metallica.Most lyrics were written by Newsted; his songwriting contributions also appeared on the band's next album No Place for Disgrace and their 2012 album Ugly Noise. The album was re-released in 2006, including a re-mastered version, DVD, and original release. This album was the first of only a handful to ever receive a 6k rating from the influential British magazine Kerrang!.The album cover can be seen in the 1988 movie Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers.Doomsday for the Deceiver was ranked at number six on Loudwire's top ten list of "Thrash Albums NOT Released by the Big 4".All songs written by Kelly David-Smith, Edward Carlson, Eric A.K., Jason Newsted, Michael Gilbert. Even the ultra-shitty artwork could not prevent its success and this says a lot about the quality of the here presented material. The rasping guitars at the beginning of "She Took an Axe" and the immediately following, elastic riff give the starting signal for the ultimate highlight of the album. This song combines speed and melody in a very coherent manner while avoiding both too complex and too simple structures. The band varies the pace and the intensity during the entire number very skilfully and the strict riffs leave no room for any form of negligence. Even the eunuch-like screams at the end of the song do not affect its impact in a negative way. "She Took an Axe" is my personal classic of this work, but it goes without saying that a masterpiece like "Doomsday for the Deceiver" houses more infectious tunes. But let's make some basic comments at first.Flotsam's debut belongs to those outputs that reflect the overdose of energy which characterized the pioneering days of speed and thrash metal. Young and healthy guys make music without seeing any sense in limiting themselves. Business plans are completely unknown, expectations of the mainstream do not play a role. The album sounds both energetic and authentic. Back in 1986, the name Flotsam and Jetsam stands for integrity and thirst for action. The output's sound is not perfect, a little bit thin and the bass does not come into its own. Yet "Doomsday for the Deceiver" offers songs that cannot be stopped by a slightly imperfect production. "She Took an Axe" only marks the tip of the iceberg.Two monuments stand in the centre of the album, the title track and "Metalshock". Due to my affinity for rather straight and non-opulent eruptions, they do not belong to my personal favourites. But they reflect a musicianship which is anything else but a matter of course in view of the fact that we are speaking about debutants. The single parts of the meticulously designed tracks are very competently interlinked. And, to avoid misunderstandings, I don't say that these almost dramatic pieces do not hit the mark. Both have great melodies and do not lack heaviness and power while avoid repetitive parts. Yet this album is filled to the brim with outstanding tunes and so these good songs have to face an overwhelming competition.The trio at the beginning mirrors the less complex side of the band in a very compelling way. "Hammerhead" constitutes a natural-born opener, not only in view of its classic chords at the beginning, but also with regard to its powerful and swift drive. The following two pieces, as well as "U.L.S.W." and "Der Führer", underline the ability of the group to fire off uncompromising and compact thrashers. Okay, the lyrics of the latter are slightly irritating ("Zeig Heil" instead of "Sieg Heil" and "Holocaust, twelve millions dead" - usually, historians speak of 6 million victims; anyhow, a shocking number), but this doesn't matter at all. More important is the fact that all these tracks convey the feeling of enthusiasm, joy of playing and metallic credibility. Since the Ice Age, my thesis is that all these young thrash bands stimulated each other in the pioneering days and Flotsam and Jetsam belonged to those groups that knew how to make the best of it. Compared with other great debuts of this time, it gets obvious that Flotsam had found their own sound at a very early stage. They did not copy the sharpness of Exodus, they were not interested in Satanic vibes that were spread by Possessed; the brutality of Dark Angel was not their cup of tea and they let John Cyriis alone with his aliens. Maybe "Doomsday for the Deceiver" can be used as the link between the slightly more aggressive first work of Testament and the marginally more melodic debut of Metal Church. This might be musically correct, but it does not justice to Flotsam's remarkable start. "Doomsday..stood (and still stands) on its own feet.The list of deficiencies is very short. The hectic staccato of "Fade to Black" fails to impress me and "Flotzilla", which is on my CD, but not on the LP version, is a rather dubious extra, because it is among these instrumentals that appear somehow half-finished. Furthermore, its position after "Der Führer" does not fit the arrangement of the tracks, because the conflagration of the anti-Hitler-song leaves nothing but scorched earth and is therefore an actually very good closer. So what. "Doomsday for the Deceiver" is an essential work for every speed and thrash fan who wants to understand the spirit of the eighties - and for those who want to experience that Eric A. K. once was able to deliver some very high-pitched screams.

The veterans from Arizona are about to release their 13th studio album - assisted by their respectable mascot "Flotzilla", returning with a big bang to the cover for the first time since 1986 (on the album cover of "Doomsday For The Deceiver"). A lot of effort and sweat has been put to the songwriting-sessions, resulting in 12 inimitable powerful and thrashy songs, whose hooks and melodies get stuck in your head easily. The line-up just completed in the beginning of 2018 with drummer Ken Mary (Ex-Alice Cooper, Fifth Angel), the band will hit the road shortly after releasing the record. You will see them on stage in Europe with Overkill and Destruction and on headlining-tour in the US in May/June. The finishing on that records has been done by Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Amaranthe, Powerwolf, U.D.O.) Flotsam & Jetsam have been there since the very beginning, and have more of a history in thrash than most of their contemporaries, leading them to release a new album ‘The End of Chaos’ at the beginning of 2019.With a fairly consistent track record of releasing albums throughout the decade, from 2010’s ‘The Cold’ through 2012’s ‘Ugly Noise’ and 2016’s self-titled ‘Flotsam & Jetsam’, ‘The End of Chaos’ feels like the end of another chapter for Flotsam & Jetsam, even before the first song on the album has started.The first track on the album, “Prisoner of Time”, accurately sets out the significance and prominence of Flotsam & Jetsam’s hybrid of thrash instrumentation and NWOBHM-influenced vocals on the part of frontman Eric “A.K.” Knutson. Without stating the obvious, it is fairly difficult to not listen to this and think Iron Maiden. “Control” immediately follows next, and definitely steps up the thrash as far as the drumming proficiency of F&J newcomer and ex- Alice Cooper drummer Ken Mary and the riffs and melodies of dual guitarists Steve Conley and Michael Gilbert.“Recover” and “Prepare for Chaos” move things along nicely, and so far the idea for the order of tracks on ‘The End of Chaos’ appears to be to have a NWOBHM-influenced track, a thrash-influenced track, another NWBOHM-influenced track, and so on and so forth as Flotsam & Jetsam bounces back and forward between the two musical styles.Since thrash can be interpreted by some as being a style of metal that at times is difficult musically when it comes to branching out and adopting new creative ideas and being able to successfully weave them properly into the already established framework of what it is that makes thrash metal thrash metal, Flotsam & Jetsam have throughout this album been able to achieve some sort of creative targets in terms of releasing a record so far into their career that accomplishes the feat of being more than just a bulk standard thrash album in which every song sounds no different to the others.With Flotsam & Jetsam’s new album ‘The End of Chaos’, the band have again constructed a fresh batch of songs that in honesty don’t stray too far from the band’s established NWOBHM-influenced thrash pallet, but at the same time will definitely be enough to satisfy long time fans of F&J. This has all the hallmarks of a band proudly wearing their stylistic influences on their sleeve, but sometimes that isn’t a bad thing. If you’re into thrash and want something to kick off the new year, give this album a listen to start 2019 well.

Flotsam and Jetsam is a thrash metal band that formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1981.The group was founded in 1981 under the name “Paradox” by drummer Kelly David-Smith and guitarists Pete Mello and Dave Goulder, who were later joined by bassist Jason Newsted. Jason had answered a newspaper ad that Kelly had placed in the local newspaper looking for a bass player. Jason came to Phoenix with his band "Gangster" from Michigan on their way to California, but Gangster broke up while in Phoenix. Kelly got a call from a couple of his high school friends, Mark Vasquez and Kevin Horton, looking for some people to jam with playing covers of bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, MSG, and UFO. The band then morphed into “Dredlox” together with the new recruits, Jason was now the main vocalist.Kelly saw "A.K." (Eric A. Knutson) singing "The Goodbye Girl" at his high school talent show. In 1982 they were in the same summer school class and Kelly asked Knutson if he wanted to audition. They put him on 2-week probation and he later joined the band. Due to the provisional nature of his membership, the band referred to Knutson as "the 2 weeker." Ed Carlson, from another local rival band called Exodus (not to be confused with the California Bay Area thrash metal band of the same name), also joined in 1983 after Kevin departure from the band. The name of the band changed into "The Dogz", but it didn't last long. Eventually the band renamed itself 'Flotsam and Jetsam' after writing a song inspired from a chapter of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Two Towers.The band made its live debuts in local clubs and in California and had the opportunity to play with bands such as Megadeth, Armored Saint, Alcatrazz, Malice, Exciter, Mercyful Fate, Riot, Autograph. In 1985 Mark Vasquez stepped out and 17-year-old Michael Gilbert joined the band. Flotsam and Jetsam released two demo tapes Iron Tears and Metal Shock in 1985.They created their first video Hammerhead from the Metal Shock demo: "We taped it in Jason and Ed's apartment living room. We also made a live video at the infamous Bootlegger in Phoenix",(owned by Gloria Cavelara "1985", currently married to Max Cavelera) These videos and the band's demos made a good impression on record labels. After the band contributed to the Speed Metal Hell II and Metal Massacre VII compilations, they then signed a deal with Metal Blade Records.Michael Spencer stepped out shortly after the European tour, his replacement was Troy Gregory, in May of the next year the band released its second opus No Place for Disgrace. According to Michael Spencer, No Place for Disgrace was going to be called Blessing in Disguise, but after his departure, Flotsam's former A&R Michael Alago let Metal Church (who was also on Elektra at the time) use that name for their third album, which was eventually released in February 1989.[6] No Place for Disgrace includes a cover of Elton John's hit "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" and therefore a video was shot. The band opened for King Diamond in America and supported Megadeth, Testament and Sanctuary in Europe on the So Far, So Good... So What! tour.Flotsam and Jetsam signed a new deal with mega-giants MCA/Universal in 1989 and began work on their third album When the Storm Comes Down, released in May 1990. The band expected to gain recognition with this album, but it suffered from a variety of mixed reviews.In June 2013 the band headlined at the Warriors of Metal Festival in Columbus Ohio, then returning home, Flotsam hired manager Jeff Keller(JKM). His roster includes the likes of: UDO, Destruction, Lordi, Hirax, Primal Fear, Satan, Suicidal Angels.In 2006 after the successful remix and master of the debut album “Doomsday for the Deceiver”, there was a lot of fan requests to have “No Place for Disgrace” follow the same process. After spending some time at the 25 year mark, the band decided to go forward with this idea. The band had some issues with the original production and definition of some of the parts played, due to the speed it was recorded at. Having had success with Ugly Noise through the PledgeMusic process, the band would be able to again gain the rights to this classic with a re-recording and some minor changes.In the middle of 2013 Flotsam embarked in this monumental task of reviving some songs that for the most part hadn’t been played in 20 years. All tracks (except drums) were done at the Flotsam studio with Michael Gilbert at the helm. In December the project was finished and the re-recording of the classic album "No Place For Disgrace", was again released using PledgeMusic to finance the project.The album, No Place For Disgrace 2014, is set to release on Feb 14th, 2014 world wide through Metal Blade Records distribution. NPFD will feature some of Flotsam's friends from the past as guest musicians, Mark Simpson, Chris Poland, Tory Edwards.Flotsam is currently ramping up for their (29 show) European tour with Sepultura, Legion of the Damned and Mortillery. The tour kick's off on Feb 7th in Bochum, Germany.

Few shadows cast as wide as that of a former member of the fold exiting and going on to what can only be described as a contender for the biggest phenomenon in metal. Apart from Exodus, who suffered this fate when their pentatonic scale shredder Kirk Hammett joined the Metallica clan, the only band who can claim to have been afflicted by this fate to a greater degree was the trailblazing power thrashing institution out of Phoenix, Arizona dubbed Flotsam And Jetsam. Despite a long and prolific career following his exodus, the specter of former bassist Jason Newsted has hung over this outfit, to the point where it is rare to have a conversation about the band named from the scattered booty of a seafaring vessel without his name being dropped in the first sentence. Nevertheless, recent years have seen these nautical scavengers overcoming this disposition with a streak of thrash-happy brilliance, of which 2021’s “Blood In The Water” stands as their strongest outing since 1988’s “No Place For Disgrace.”In similar fashion to fellow mid-80s wrecking crews Heathen, Death Angel and Overkill, this Southwestern-based quintet reminisces upon the past heyday of thrash metal without overtly dwelling upon it, employing all of the latest studio bells and whistles to attain a colossal sound. Relative to their near equally powerful 2019 last entry “The End Of Chaos”, this entry follows a similar formula of compact, high octane bangers that cover about roughly the same amount of time in 12 songs that they did with 8 or 9 back in the 80s. Be this as it may, the modern incarnation of this band is no less elaborate than it was during the band’s formative period, as longtime axe-man Michael Gilbert and his greener compatriot Steve Conley cut heads with an absolute fury, rivaling the recent output of Testament’s famed 6-string duo of Skolnick and Petersen. Along with the wild drumming display of Ken Mary and the dark, pounding and occasionally flashy bass work of the newly recruited Bill Bodily of tech death extraordinaire outfit Contrarian, a massive juggernaut of sound is formed to accompany front man Eric A.K.’s gritty yet soaring vocals across the seven seas.Pummeling the waves with the ferocity of an icebreaker ship cutting through the waters of Antarctica, this album kicks off by firing on all cylinders. With the aid of a massive orchestral patch at its inception, the opener and blistering title anthem “Blood On The Water” delivers the speed and bluster like its falling out of fashion, underscoring the unique ability possessed by engineer Jacob Hansen to turn ones speakers into weapons. This mode of impact-based, frenetic aggression with a side order of infectious hooks proves to be the modus operandi behind a plurality of this album’s subsequent anthems, with the pummeling punch of “Burn The Sky” and the more power metalized fury of “Brace For Impact” chasing the aforementioned opening anthem with an equally potent one-two-punch. Not content to leave it as an opening trilogy of modern thrashing carnage, the nimble riff monster “A Place To Die” lays down the swift gallops with a vengeance and lands on a dense harmonic chorus hook that has a pretty strong Iron Maiden-like flavor to it, allowing A.K.’s smoother high range to make some occasional waves.Nuance isn’t really a part of Flotsam And Jetsam’s stock and trade, but this isn’t to say that they aren’t beyond mixing things up a bit, and they hit some interesting territory when not going full speed ahead. The more mid-paced romp “Walls” has a bit more of a melodic, old school heavy metal vibe to it, and really lays on the Maiden-vibes wherein the harmonized lead guitar hooks are concerned. Likewise, the slower paced “Cry For The Dead” ventures into a brilliantly haunting fit of power balladry, shifting from a dreary, clean guitar driven dirge to a biting Middle Eastern crescendo in a somewhat jarring but highly effective fashion, and stands as one of Eric’s standout vocal performances. The generally fast paced “Dragon” thrashes it up aplenty during an agitated verse segment, but cadences on a brilliantly tuneful chorus line that blurs the lines between Judas Priest and Helloween. But arguably the biggest surprise of the album is almost shred-infused display heard on “Undone”, which is similarly fast to the thrashing material heard on here, but just goes over the top on the lead guitars and could almost be chalked up to this band’s answer to what bands like Cacophony did back in the 80s.There are no weak links, no slouches, nor anything that could be dubbed filler to be found on this album, it’s just one continuous barrage of brilliance that only real varies in terms of absolute velocity. It’s easily a worthy rival to what Testament, Overkill and Death Angel have been offering up of late, and it’s definitely a cut above most of what the so-called Big 4 has been up to recently. Though this writer personally doesn’t think that Flotsam And Jetsam will ever top the classic duo that were “Doomsday For The Deceiver” and “No Place For Disgrace,” this is the closest that they’ve gotten to doing so thus far, and it should put to rest any notion that this band can’t be talked about apart from being the springboard for Jason Newsted’s career. This isn’t an exercise in reinventing the sub-genre, but more a refined, higher octane version of the more melodic and old school metal-infused that they’ve been offering up since 2016’s eponymous comeback. Far from collecting barnacles, this veteran thrash team have salvaged one of the more impressive hauls of 2021 so far.

In an increasingly fast-paced world that appears to be interested only in the latest innovations, FLOTSAM AND JETSAM continue to be the proverbial rock in turbulent waters. For almost forty years, the thrash metal act from Phoenix, Arizona has released new albums on a regular basis and toured successfully around the globe. The band has never shown any loss of form or weaknesses to speak of, on the contrary: Since the arrival of their 1986 debut "Doomsday For The Receiver", FLOTSAM AND JETSAM have delivered an impressive number of awesome offerings. Friday 13th, September 2024 will see the release of their 15th studio album "I Am The Weapon" on AFM/Believe, a recording that more than deserves its self-confident title. "I Am The Weapon" not only takes up seamlessly where its two outstanding predecessors "The End Of Chaos" (2019) and "Blood In The Water" (2021) left off, but also goes one step further in terms of musical skill and composition. “We`re very excited to unleash this album onto the metal community,“ states singer Erik AK Knutson. „We took our time, and crafted an album that everyone of us in the band is happy with. We went through a ton of songs and ideas to end up with the final choices for this record.” To ease the wait for all Flotsam And Jetsam fans, four lead singles will be released before the album arrives at the physical and digital stores: the title track (including lyric video) has been available online since the end of April, the official clip for the second single "Primal" will follow on 31 May 2024, "Burned My Bridges" will be out on 5 July, and the official "A New Kind Of Hero" video is scheduled to be launched on 2 August 2024.„To be honest, we were somewhat nervous making this record, just like we had been on ‚The End of Chaos’ and ‘Blood in the Water’,” reveals guitarist Steve Conley. „Those two records we were very happy with, and yet we always feel the pressure to top what we did on our last album. After finishing this record, we feel that we came forward with some amazing and at times unusual music. Hopefully the fans agree.” Conley references typical FLOTSAM AND JETSAM numbers such as "Black Wings", "I Am The Weapon" and "A New Kind of Hero": aggressive, fast-paced songs that also hold a number of surprises in store. Guitarist Michael Gilbert adds: “’Black Wings’ has an unusual breakdown section and intro, "I Am The Weapon" has almost a death metal intro and outro, and "A New Kind Of Hero" has an unusual arrangement and still retains a great sense of melody. We really strive to create music that stays heavy, but retains an element of melody as well.“ The atmospheric but not super-fast "Burned My Bridges" is somewhat unusual Flotsam And Jetsam material. The same applies to "The Head Of The Snake", which is based on aggressive vocals and drop-tuned guitars, and the catchy "Beneath The Shadows" featuring a groove that’s a little uncharacteristic of this band."I Am The Weapon" was composed and produced by the whole band and the eleven songs were recorded at SonicPhish Productions, Gnome Lord Studios, Wayne Manor Studios, and Seventh Spike Studios. The superb cover artwork was again created by Andy Pilkington.There’s every sign of a storm brewing and a hot festival summer in the offing. Drummer Ken Mary states: “We did just complete almost a month of touring through the US, Canada, and ending in Brazil. This summer we are scheduled at Grasspop, Dynamo and Wacken, and we will also be doing some shows between those festivals as well. Flotsam and Jetsam released two demo tapes Iron Tears and Metal Shock in 1985.They created their first video Hammerhead from the Metal Shock demo: "We taped it in Jason and Ed's apartment living room. We also made a live video at the infamous Bootlegger in Phoenix",(owned by Gloria Cavelara "1985", currently married to Max Cavelera) These videos and the band's demos made a good impression on record labels. After the band contributed to the Speed Metal Hell II and Metal Massacre VII compilations, they then signed a deal with Metal Blade Records.Michael Spencer stepped out shortly after the European tour, his replacement was Troy Gregory, in May of the next year the band released its second opus No Place for Disgrace. According to Michael Spencer, No Place for Disgrace was going to be called Blessing in Disguise, but after his departure, Flotsam's former A&R Michael Alago let Metal Church (who was also on Elektra at the time) use that name for their third album, which was eventually released in February 1989.[6] No Place for Disgrace includes a cover of Elton John's hit "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" and therefore a video was shot. The band opened for King Diamond in America and supported Megadeth, Testament and Sanctuary in Europe on the So Far, So Good... So What! tour.Flotsam and Jetsam signed a new deal with mega-giants MCA/Universal in 1989 and began work on their third album When the Storm Comes Down, released in May 1990. The band expected to gain recognition with this album, but it suffered from a variety of mixed reviews.In June 2013 the band headlined at the Warriors of Metal Festival in Columbus Ohio, then returning home, Flotsam hired manager Jeff Keller(JKM). His roster includes the likes of: UDO, Destruction, Lordi, Hirax, Primal Fear, Satan, Suicidal Angels.In 2006 after the successful remix and master of the debut album “Doomsday for the Deceiver”, there was a lot of fan requests to have “No Place for Disgrace” follow the same process. After spending some time at the 25 year mark, the band decided to go forward with this idea. The band had some issues with the original production and definition of some of the parts played, due to the speed it was recorded at. Having had success with Ugly Noise through the PledgeMusic process, the band would be able to again gain the rights to this classic with a re-recording and some minor changes.In the middle of 2013 Flotsam embarked in this monumental task of reviving some songs that for the most part hadn’t been played in 20 years. All tracks (except drums) were done at the Flotsam studio with Michael Gilbert at the helm. In December the project was finished and the re-recording of the classic album "No Place For Disgrace", was again released using PledgeMusic to finance the project.The album, No Place For Disgrace 2014, is set to release on Feb 14th, 2014 world wide through Metal Blade Records distribution. NPFD will feature some of Flotsam's friends from the past as guest musicians, Mark Simpson, Chris Poland, Tory Edwards.Flotsam is currently ramping up for their (29 show) European tour with Sepultura, Legion of the Damned and Mortillery. The tour kick's off on Feb 7th in Bochum, Germany.
