Billboard magazine heralded the collection a "Top Album Pick" and praised the band's 'surging music, tough lyrics and effective vocals'."More Power To Ya" is where Petra really hit their stride. The potential in their music had been screaming for release from the beginning and occasionally shone through, but this was where it all came together.Gone were the outdated organ and mini Moog replaced with synthesizers, Louie Weaver breathed new life into the music with his fresh style of drumming, and Greg Volz's vocals are clear and crisp, melodic.Production is flawless, and this remaster makes it sound even better.Musically, "More Power To Ya" is strongly AOR-radio rock oriented with stadium feel choruses. Petra, nevertheless, pressed on in hiring a new vocalist in John Schlitt.Schlitt's more powerful approach provided to the band an extra edge to their AOR sound, enhanced in this record by the glossy production of John & Dino Elefante.Indeed, the Elefante bros. are in grand part responsible of "This Means War!" awesome second half of the '80s US American Melodic Hard / AOR 'huge' sound."This Means War!" certainly puts the “rock” back in the band’s namesake, kicking off with the hard-hitting title track anthem. From there, the album continues delivering punchy rockers like 'He Came, He Saw, He Conquered', the FM Rock classic 'Get On Your Knees And Fight Like A Man' (with some Kansas on it), and the sharp Toto-like 'The Water Is Alive'.Pure US anthemic AOR is present on the the Journey flavored 'Kenaniah', and 'You Are My Rock' (in the vein of Canadians Triumph), both fantastic cuts to die for.There's a great melodic rocker in 'Dead Reckoning', while the midtempo closer 'All The King’s Horses' is another AOR little gem. Of course, there are the obligatory power ballads in the gentle 'I Am Available' and 'Don’t Let Your Heart Be Hardened'.But on "This Means War!" it’s the guitar-driven punchy AOR / melodic rock that is center stage, which is how I like my Petra.Digitally remastered for the first time, Petra's "This Means War! 25th Anniversary Edition" sounds terrific. An album that can't remain absent in your '80s US AOR / Melodic Rock collection.

Beat the System is the seventh studio album of the Christian rock band, Petra. It was released in 1985.It is the first album to feature John Lawry on keyboards, although he only joined towards the end of the recording process; his contributions were limited to some overdubs on the songs "Beat the System", "Clean" and "Adonai".Most of the keyboards on the album, as well as all the bass and drum parts, were performed by session musician Carl Marsh; Petra members Mark Kelly (bass) and Louie Weaver (drums) did not perform on the album.Fairlight programmer Rhett Lawrence added some elements to "Clean" and "Hollow Eyes".Carl Marsh's programming, under the direction of producer Jonathan David Brown, veered the sound of the album more in the techno-rock genre of music.It is also the last studio album to feature the vocals of Greg X. Volz.The album includes the band's second cover of "God Gave Rock and Roll to You", the first being on 1977's Come and Join Us. While the album credits Argent's Russ Ballard as sole songwriter this version, like the earlier version, contains lyrics not heard in the original Argent version.Guitarist Bob Hartman stated that the recordings of some songs were left unfinished for the album and subsequently never released.Nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance in 1985.

Petra is a music group regarded as a pioneer of the Christian rock and contemporary Christian music genres. Formed in 1972, the band took its name from the Greek word for "rock". Though they disbanded formally in 2006, incarnations of Petra have played reunion shows in the years since and released an album in November 2010. In 2013, the band returned from retirement with a new drummer Cristian Borneo and recorded a new song titled "Holy is Your Name", as well as going back on tour.With a style initially similar to The Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Petra's sound evolved into a more energetic, driving rock sound in the early 1980s akin to Foreigner, Styx and Journey. Throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s, Petra was one of the world's most popular Christian rock bands, with each of its albums during that period selling hundreds of thousands of copies while the band sold out arenas and regularly placed songs at the top of Christian radio charts. With its lyrics, music and style, Petra influenced numerous other artists at a time when Christian rock experienced strong opposition from many conservative pastors and churches.In more than three decades, the band experienced numerous lineup changes yet released 20 studio albums, as well as three Spanish-language and two live albums, selling nearly 10 million copies while being nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, winning four, and winning 10 Dove Awards. Its biggest hit, "The Coloring Song," reached the top position on three Christian radio charts simultaneously, and at its peak, the band's tours rivaled Amy Grant's in popularity among Christian audiences. Petra was the first rock band inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the first Christian band whose memorabilia was included in the Hard Rock Cafe restaurant chain.The band announced its retirement in 2005, launching a farewell tour that was recorded for release on CD and DVD. Petra's 33-year career ended with a performance in the early hours of January 1, 2006, in Murphy, North Carolina. However, the band has continued to perform sporadically since then. In November 2010, an incarnation of the band's mid-1980s lineup surfaced under the name Classic Petra. They released a CD titled Back to the Rock featuring two new songs as well as re-recordings of hits from that era. The band released a companion live CD and DVD in 2011.

As part of their Legends Of Rock series, Girder Records just released past December 27th their own remastered version of PETRA‘s album ”Jekyll & Hyde”, featured in exclusive here.Petra’s ”Jekyll & Hyde” marked a pivotal moment in the band’s storied career. Originally released in 2003, simply put, ”Jekyll & Hyde” is the band’s most powerful and heavy album, featuring a bold, metallic sound that resonated with fans and critics alike. It is clearly Petra’s hardest album to date. Now, beautifully remastered by Rob Colwell, ”Jekyll & Hyde” sounds even heavier, with more punch.While metallic from every corner, ”Jekyll & Hyde” still is very much Petra – melodic, polished, catchy. It’s a really potent record: 10 songs at the 3-minute mark, album is 31 minutes long. Oh yeah, to the jugular, no tricks, effective biting songs.From the jarring riffs of the title cut to the amazing, Boston-like hook scored through with overdriven guitars on “Perfect World,” John Schlitt soars like a kid 20 years his junior on vocals. The tempo on most of the tracks, such as “Test of Time,” is tough, ballsy, crunchy.You’d never expected Petra with teeth and menace? Check out ”Jekyll & Hyde’, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.Few bands have impacted the history of Christian rock music like Petra has. It’s been since the ’70s the band has released their self-titled debut, and it’s been an incredible run. In 2003, following a few worship records, the band answered the call of longtime fans crying out for a return to their glory days of rock n’ roll with their release of ”Jekyll & Hyde”.In 2001, Petra released Revival, a modern worship record that departed from the typical sounds Petra had become known for, forming what was a fresh and relevant album.But it left a question on many diehard fans’ minds: “Can these guys still rock?”
”Jekyll & Hyde” responds with a resounding “Yes.”With the departure of original drummer Louie Weaver (and the controversy surrounding him apparently being kicked out of the band), the only remaining members are founder guitarist Bob Hartman and lead vocalist John Schlitt. Now on Peter Furler’s (of The Newsboys) own label Inpop Records, it isn’t a wonder to see just how involved members of the Newsboys got on this record.The album was produced by Furler, programming was accomplished by Jeff Frankenstein, and background vocals were leant by Phil Joel and Furler as well. The Aussies indeed add to the record.The album opens strong with the title track, leading in with a subtle guitar followed by a ferocious riff and pounding drums. Petra maintains a hint of arena rock flavor all over, but everything is heavy here. Bordering on metal at times, ”Jekyll & Hyde” ultimately still feels like a Petra record, due to Hartman’s familiar songwriting and Schlitt’s characteristic vocals.”Jekyll & Hyde” is one badass hard n’ heavy record full of great songs, proggy hooks, stunning riffs, and a possibility that lies behind its text. They did another ‘different’ album here. Who can ask for more from a band that has been at it for four+ decades?

Girder Records remastered reissue of PETRA 1988’s album “On Fire!“, as part of the label’s Legends Of Rock series. Now if you love that late ’80s U.S. melodic hard rock sound, polished yet punchy, then “On Fire!” is a must have in your collection.All Petra remastered reissues by Girder Records are really good, but this is just fabulous. Originally produced by Dino & John Elefante, this album is h-u-g-e. And their job at the desk was so good that the album really benefits with a remaster from the original multi-track tapes. You need to hear this CD!Musically, “On Fire!”, while still very melodic, it’s really hard rocking sharp, crisp, with a great attack for the most part.After ‘This Means War’ dropped in 1987 with such success, no one would ever go on record saying that Petra would be able to top it. But Petra and magicians Dino & John Elefante had other plans, forging an entirely new album that would go down as one of the band’s all-time great works, and for many, their absolute favorite.This is the first Petra album to feature Ronny Cates on bass who would remain with the band until 1995. With his addition to the line-up, the band started their more stable period in terms of line-up. Schlitt, Hartman, Cates, Lawry and Weaver would remain together for seven years and six albums.And Cates resulted a great addition – his rounded bass lines are awesome, and this remaster takes the best of ’em. The difference with the original CD in terms of sound output is incredible. The bass on this album kills.Well, the entire band shine as usual, Petra was at their peek here as musicians, and on this album, literally on fire!Title track “All Fired Up” is first of three heavy hitters to open the album. It sets the tone with its staunch rhythm guitar, leaving no doubt as to the group’s buffeting intentions with its harrying mentality but also not backing from a melodic benchmark, unveiled in the forthrightly exuberant refrain. Founding member Bob Hartman might not be the flashiest lead guitarist, but his playing is melodic and stays true to the strength of the song.“Hit You Where You Live” starts to a drum solo ahead of delivering ample low end groove alongside thickset guitar proclivity. Main difference, however, is a heightened keyboard presence, referencing the skilled work of John Lawry. Refrain particularly stands out with its fathomless ‘hit you where you live, you can’t hold back’ appeal.“Mine Field” ranks with albums heaviest. Song delivers the type of metal edge and bite that it would not sound out of place on a Whitecross album, although a contrasting commercial component reveals in the glossy backing vocals hinting of Stryper. Schlitt complements the arresting scene with his trademark gritty and raspy but always heartfelt vocal abilities.Ballad “First Love” is solid with its gracious melody but trends melodic hard rock and AOR territory. Hence, piano, spotless keyboards and pristine vocal harmonies convey its length. “Defector” also touches upon metal. It ups tempo to a more contentious angle, the keyed up timekeeping of drummer Louie Weaver lends to the expeditious flair, as an anthem like compositing of focused momentum and radiant energy leads the authoritative way. Fleet backing vocals lend a refining touch.“Counsel Of The Holy” brings back PETRA mid-80s AOR, a midtempo with bite, and a very good one at that! It commences to a warm aligning of rhythm guitar and keyboards, with guitar dropping from the mix for the piano-laced verse sections only to return and shoulder the demonstrative – and quite engaging – refrain. Offshoot is albums most immediately radio friendly melody – and one of Petra’s finer Eighties songs.“Somebody’s Gonna Praise His Name” ensues in underscoring the Petra melodic rock tradition. It begins slowly in angelic fashion to restful harmonizing, not gaining initiative until understated guitar takes over and impels things forward in mirroring a melodic rock-based form as opposed to hard rock.In contrast with the heavier tracks on the album, “Open Book” is AORish, almost pop-rock – noting the abundant melody – with a prominent keyboard mix. We appreciate Ronny Cates’ distinguished bass line, and as always Schlitt performs admirably.If we speak about Petra John Schlitt era albums, ”On Fire!” is among the best – if not the best. This is Petra ‘hard rock’ with polish, edge, balanced by a few ’80s AORish songs. Strong writing & arrangements (the Elefante Bros were involved as well), great playing and top notch production.Really good 1988’s American melodic/hard stuff.

It took us years working with Word|Curb records to make these releases happen, but we did it. The audio has undergone a complete remastering, achieved through an official collaboration between Word|Curb and Girder Music. Originally released in 1974, Petra's first album comes in a burgundy vinyl, 180 gram audiophile pressing, Girder Music presents a hype sticker and 2-sided insert with lyrics and is part of a limited run vinyl series and is now a collectors dream.Petra's debut album, released on Myrrh Records in 1974, coincided with the period when Bob Hartman, Greg Hough, Bill Glover, and John DeGroff were shaping their signature raw, guitar-driven rock-n-roll sound infused with the spirit of rural America. Tracks like 'Walkin' In The Light', 'Wake Up', and 'Get Back To The Bible' resonate with energy, propelled by electrifying leads. Notable is the inclusion of the classic slow blues rocker 'Back Sliding Blues'. While a couple of tracks rock hard, the hillbilly bluegrass diversion 'Lucas McGraw' has become a fan favorite. The back cover boldly declares "Petra is... Rock - massive - with spiritual overtones", signaling the beginning of a legendary musical journey. Classic rock at its best.The provocateurs of Jesus rock have enjoyed a long and fruitful career, spanning from 1974 to present, possibly the most consistent and prominent act to record/tour for a five-decade career. The early years of Petra find them in a more guitar-driven and stripped down 70s rock sound in the vein of their contemporaries The Allman Brothers and Cream. Bob Hartman plays very tasty guitar on their debut, arguably his best soloing on titles such as I Am Not Ashamed, Storm Comin’ and Get Back to the Bible. The song structure on Wake Up take me back to early Santana in its rock fusion textures. And of course, the highly notable Backslider Blues, serves as an early example of blues rock in true form.Petra began as a band in 1972, recording their first album in 1974. Very few bands have made an impact and lasted as long as Petra, fifty years to be exact. Many fans didn't hear or even know about Petra until they had already won their first Grammy in 1990 for Best Rock Contemporary Album for Beyond Belief. Real Petra fans were following the band long before the masses jumped on the bandwagon. Many of us followed them from the beginning, or so we thought. After all, wasn't "Washes Whiter Than" and "Never Say Die" the band's first albums? Many of us "real fans" actually thought so because it wasn't until "Washes Whiter Than" and "Never Say Die," and great promotion from Star Song as the go-to Christian rock label of the day accompanied by great distribution, that many of us became real fans. Truth be told, Petra released these two milestone records in the '70s long before the band's '80s era of high-tech sounds and futuristic guitar spaceships adorned covers. Bob Hartman, Greg Hough, Bill Glover, and John DeGroff were crafting raw, guitar-driven rock 'n' roll very reminiscent of CCR, Allman Bros., and even Cream.One of the greatest things about these first two early Petra albums is the progression of what it actually brought us. When so many of us were discouraged that we couldn’t find rock ‘n’ roll that was anywhere close to the counterpart that was available on a secular scene, these albums closed that gap. There were a few bands that changed that mindset for us Christian rockers, and at the top of most people's list was the band Petra. Although these first two early albums were not as well-known, they are just as good. If you are a true Petra fan, these are not only must-haves for your collection, but you must put them on and play them. You'll realize now, 50 years later, how great these albums really are. Back in the day, in the mid-'80s when there were flying guitars and spaceships on the album covers, we often mocked classic rock as being not as rock ‘n’ roll. If you didn't have long hair and leather pants with a flying V guitar, you weren't cool. However, looking back now, we realize not only were these albums great, they were also defining moments for the Christian music scene. These albums stand alone as a testament to what great classic Christian rock should be, yet few accomplished.

Girder Music and Word/Curb Records presents this collaboration to release for the first time remastered CD’s of PETRA early albums. Meticulously remastered by esteemed audio engineer Rob Colwell, the sound quality obtained on “Come and Join Us“, the band’s sophomore 1977’s LP is really good, with a crisp sonic output.It’s pretty cool to revisit Petra origins, as it was a completely different band. Previous reissue (non-remastered) altered the album’s track list – this one respect the original LP sequence, as intended by the band.Still with classic rock & southern / Americana influences as on the debut album, “Come and Join Us” is more rock oriented. Founding Petra guitarist Bob Hartman wanted to title the album “God Gave Rock and Roll to You”, after one of the songs. This song was written by Russ Ballard for his band Argent, and later became a hard rock anthem, covered by other bands like KISS (1991) and Bride (1993). Petra’s version is very good.Also – like their previous album – there is no lead singer per se. Instead, the lead vocals are handled by guitarists Hartman and Greg Hough, and some guests. One of the guest singers is Greg X. Volz who later became the band’s full-time vocalist.

Originally released in 1979, Washes Whiter Than has never been on CD with all 10 songs, until now. I know that is hard to believe but it was only released as a double album alongside of Never Say Die in 1988, leaving off 2 songs (#7 “Couldn't Find Love Without You” and #9 “Magic Words”). Finally, 42 years later we get to celebrate this complete album on CD for the first time ever. Now, completely remastered from original sources and containing all 10 songs in the order it was originally released on cassette and vinyl. Complete with LTD trading card, with an 8-page booklet containing lyrics, photos, and original credits in a jewel case. Incidentally, the original 1988 double album had all 10 songs listed on the disc face but not on the back of the CD (tray card) and were not actually on the CD. The tray card also incorrectly had Never Say Die listed first and Washes Whiter Than second.Washes Whiter Than is the third studio album by the Christian rock band Petra. It was released in 1979 amidst major line-up changes that saw all but one of the founding band members leave.The album features a more mellow style when compared to the band's two previous efforts. Part of the reason for this is that the group wanted to get away from the controversy surrounding the hard rock style of their earlier releases. The softer material on this record achieved greater airplay on Christian radio stations than had their previous albums.This is also the first release to feature singer Greg X. Volz as an official band member. Musician Rob Frazier, who later went on to have a solo career, is also featured as lead vocalist in several of the songs, as well as playing most of the instrumentation together with founder Bob Hartman.The album was reissued by Star Song Records on a 2-on-1 CD package together with 1981's Never Say Die. The songs "(Couldn't Find Love) Without You" and "Magic Words" were cut from this edition to save space.

Featuring a dark bluesy guitar open from Bob Hartman, “Kiss the Coals” is definitely one of the standout tracks on the record.“Oxygen” is one of the songs that will get people talking – purely for how different it is than anything Petra have ever done. It sees them channeling their inner Santana.“Skin in the Game” is one of the heaviest on the record and goes hand-in-hand with “It Is Finished” but heavier and purely addictive, while “We Rejoice in Hope” would have fit perfectly on Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out with the fast-paced tempo we got on some of those classics.“There Will Still Be a Dawn” is a gorgeous ballad that recalling of “No Doubt” (1995) reminding you that, no matter how dark things get, it will get better and God will help you through it.“Thorns” is yet another standout track. It’s got a theatrical and cinematic vibe, an epic composition, building and has some of the strongest lyrics on the track – especially the line of “In the garden of my heart, I find the weeds have grown. Tangled up in heart’s desire, I can’t do this alone.”Closing out with “Looking Back” and lead single “Deliver Us,” Hope is almost impossible to compare to previous Petra records as there are tracks that would have fit on multiple eras of their 50-plus year career, and on a couple, the band explore new sounds and they ever has done.If you combined Jekyll & Hyde, Revival and No Doubt, you might be close but, just like the rest of their career, Petra have created an album that stands on its own and has its own life and identity. While ”Hope” isn’t heavy as you might expect, it’s still one of the best records they’ve written post-90’s era.Bob Hartman hasn’t lost a step as ”Hope” delivers on every level. Musically, one thing’s for sure after a few listens – Petra’s back and they’ve still got it.
