Bio:

Satan would change their name to Blind Fury after the release of their debut ''Court In The Act''. The former singer Brian Ross was replaced by Lou Taylor who was in Satan once before and himself was also, ironically, replaced by Brian Ross. After they released ''Out Of Reach'' they changed their name back to Satan and Michael Jackson joined on vocals. In 1988, they changed their name again, this time to The Kindred and then to Pariah. They recorded two more albums and then quit, with a reformed version of Pariah releasing a third album in 1997.Satan reuinted for a series of shows in 2004, and then again permanently in 2011.With regards to the band's name, Steve Ramsey said in a 2013 interview: "The judge was always part of it, the judge and the the devil. That’s the basic theme of the whole band, you know. Satan isn’t occult or anything like that, the whole idea of the band is injustice. It’s all about injustice."

Album:

It has been three decades of Metal since that well reserved period of time right before everything inaugurated and became intense; a surge of energy loomed, roaming across lands and continents spreading like a disease. Out of the UK, born of the NWOBHM, there were SATAN, can’t be perceived as pioneers within the NWOBHM but in time they were considered the ones that initiated what later called Speed Metal and its little brother, Thrash Metal. Fueling with their debut “Court In Act”, released in 1983, the world was in session, a new era began with a blast. Since then it has been a tumult for the English band, renamed, revamped and reburied again to be remained close under the shutters for who knows how long. In 2011, it happened, a decision to return, to show that there is something there after all these years. Two years later SATAN reached the verdict with a newfound condemnation. “Life Sentence”, via Listenable Records, consisting of the same classic lineup that recorded the debut. Now don’t rush to judgment, just listen and in the same time read.Right from my first strides through this album it seemed as if the band’s mid to late 80s periods were never there and here we are, after “Court In Act”, not three decades away, with a new album to continue a forged legacy. Not only the tremendous sound, which is practically near replica, yet a lively one, of the band’s vintage Marshall amps stuffed production of their early years, the music haven’t changed even for a bit. In order to put order in things, SATAN actually stopped producing albums after their sophomore album of 1988, “Suspended Sentence”. But with “Life Sentence”, along with the superiority of Brian Ross at the helm of the vocals once again after so many years that didn’t participate on the second album, SATAN continued “Court In Act”. So there you go, that was the long version, and me stopping myself with too much history than analysis, of what was and what is, now I will head back to the album.Listening to “Life Sentence” I was glad that SATAN’s melodic, and even somewhat complex, Metal musical perception hasn’t changed much. Frankly, it didn’t change at all. SATAN has been clinging to pins of NWOBHM, whether the harmonic twin guitar setting, a bit early MAIDEN bass work, resilient mid ranged vocals with complementary high pitch indications and the mid tempo to fast paced drumming heading the call onwards for the royalties of Speed Metal. Thus the material is both challenging with plenty of interesting intersections and passages that reeks of the UK throughout their regions. Furthermore, the songs are more or less catchy, kind of in the vein of “Court In Act”. I must concede that I found the debut album to be that distinctive unpolished diamond with a profound magic and mark that will be hard to heave easily. “Life Sentence”, braced by classic top notch fanatic self-titled track, the suitable souvenir of the band’s old antics, all hail the filth of the court, as if it was a long lost track finally found or the melodic “Incantations”, all guns blazing “Time To Die” that isn’t far from “Pull The Trigger” acting as the album’s boisterous opener, or the epic British Steel demonstration of “Twenty Twenty Five” or the wayward sons of mother earth, “Personal Demons” and “Tears Of Blood”. In a few words to put this to rest, SATAN is back with the blazes of NWOBHM. We are back at least a few years after 1983, the guitars are rolling with melodies, rhythm guitars thundering, thin sounded, yet mystic, orchestrations rumbling and a leader chanting something about justice and other obscurities. This is a highly commended band and album; I urge you dear Metalheads, no matter the age, not to miss an example of a good restoration.
