Bio:

Dirty White Boy was a short-lived, hard rock / glam metal band formed in Los Angeles, California, U.S. in 1988. The band released an album called Bad Reputation in 1990 and toured the U.S. and Europe to support it before breaking up due to poor album sales. The band was formed by three musicians already somewhat established in the music world and wanting to try their hands at joining in with the current trends. Frontman David Glen Eisley had just been ousted from the band Giuffria (at the advice of non-member Gene Simmons, who basically dissolved the band) and was looking to get involved in a new project; Keni Richards had previously been the drummer for the band Autograph, who had a major hit in the mid-1980s with "Turn Up the Radio" and had recently broken up; Earl Slick had already developed a prolific career as a session guitarist, and occasional solo artist, throughout the 1970s and 1980s, playing with the likes of David Bowie and John Lennon. Bassist and later tattoo artist F. Kirk Alley replaced the original bassist Pete Comita (ex-Cheap Trick) and was the only member of the band who had not had any prior mainstream experience.

Album:

Bad Reputation Records new remastered reissue (including a bonus track) of the only album from DIRTY WHITE BOY, a sort of super group featuring David Glen Eisley (Giuffria, House Of Lords), Keri Richards (Autograph) and the to the stars Earl Slick (Bowie, John Lennon et all).Titled ”Bad Reputation” (curiously the same as the record label reissuing it) DIRTY WHITE BOY released this album in 1990 on major label Polydor. Produced by famed Beau Hill, the album delivered a rocking collection of bluesy hard rockers which promised bigger things for the band.Earl Slick’s unique playing using slide guitar gave to the band’s brand of hard rock a distinctive sound, with Eisley’s powerful bluesy vocals creating strong melodies.Earl Slick initially started the project with ex-Heavy Pettin’ vocalist Steve Hayman, however Slick contacted Eisley with who talked in the past about working together. Soon former Autograph drummer Keri Richards and bassist F. Kirk Alley joined, and after some demos, the record deal surfaced.Eisley’s vocals are suitably gruff for this lean and dirty rock ‘n’ roll – ‘Lazy Crazy’ being a prime example. ‘Let’s Spend Momma’s Money’ is a real stomper with a nice honky-tonk piano riff going on in the background. Then it’s ‘lighters in the air’ time for ‘You Give Me Love’ – just how a ballad should be done, soaring heartfelt vocals, guitar solo midway through and a nice heart tugging lyric.”Bad Reputation” sold well, especially in Europe, where the band flew for a long, successful string of gigs. But still in Europe, when DIRTY WHITE BOY manager was planning their US tour, promoters told them that nothing was happening with this type of classic ard rock bands anymore.Additionally, Polygram was in the dismantling process, hence ”Bad Reputation” got zero promotion in the USA. The band manger said ”you may as well not go home, you’re better off staying here in Europe”. But the musicians wanted to return. ”We came back to no support, no company, no nothing. It was pathetically funny” said Eisley.Soon after, they split.DIRTY WHITE BOY should have been bigger than they were and it’s a real shame they didn’t record a second album. While Eisley years after commented that the band wasn’t entirely happy with Beau Hill’s production as being too much polished, we think his job benefited the ”Bad Reputation” sound, still retaining the song’s rock n’ roll heart.
