Helena Iren Michaelsen "Angel" (born 2 June 1977) is a Norwegian singer-songwriter who is well-known as the frontwoman for European symphonic metal band Imperia and her solo project Angel. She was once a member of the former Gothic metal band Trail of Tears, and symphonic metal band Sahara Dust who later renamed to Epica.Michaelsen was born in Evje, and started off as the female vocalist in 1997 for Norwegian gothic metal band Trail of Tears, succeeding after Ales Vik who departed from the band that same year. A year later, Michaelsen and the band recorded their debut album Disclosure in Red in which she sang contralto vocals and contributed to writing lyrics. In 2000, she again took role of contralto vocals in their second album Profoundemonium, which was last album to feature Helena.Soon after, she was replaced by Cathrine Paulsen in May of that year.Two years after leaving Trail of Tears, she was selected by Mark Jansen (who had just left After Forever) as vocalist for his new band Sahara Dust; but she left not long after, replaced by then-unknown Simone Simons. The band was renamed Epica, inspired by the album of the same name by Tampa, Florida-based Kamelot that was released the same year.After leaving Sahara Dust, Michaelsen teamed up with Steve Wolz (who was to be the drummer for Sahara Dust) and the pair relocated to Norway. Upon their return to The Netherlands they formed the band Imperia.As Imperia, Michaelsen and Wolz recorded a cover of "The Lotus Eaters" by Dead Can Dance for a double tribute album with the same title released through the Greek label Black Lotus Records. The track subsequently was included in Imperia's 2004 album The Ancient Dance of Qetesh as a bonus track.

ANGEL’s “A Woman’s Diary – The Hidden Chapter” is another heartfelt and emotional album by Helena Iren Michaelsen. She already showed her emotional non-metal side with her previous albums “A Woman’s Diary – Chapter I” as well as “A Woman’s Diary – Chapter II”. Now she takes it even a step further and reduced the arrangements to only piano and vocals for an entire album.– Helena is known for having a voice that can master all different kinds of styles and produce many different colors, from the most fragile and sensitive singing to aggressive grunts.– This acoustic album rather features the sensitive kind of singing, and it also includes several songs where she could use her classical soprano education.– Oliver Philipps plays the piano on the album and it is carried out with the same sensitivity and emotionality that Helena has in her voice.– Most of the songs are cover versions, covering a wide range of genres from classics like “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” to Motörhead’s “Don’t Let Daddy Kiss Me”.– The songs were not chosen by style or genre, they are just songs that have had a story to them in Helena’s life, so she relates to them and was able make them “her own”.– Two songs are self-composed, “Little Ballerina” and “Keep Your Head Held High”, and there is a piano version of “Let Down” from IMPERIA’s “Secret Passion” album included as well.– So, at first, this album may come with a very unexpected choice of songs, but it is yet another intense emotional journey Helena takes the listener on, hoping to touch the people’s heart and soul.
