Bio:

Crematory is a gothic/melodic death metal band formed in Mannheim, Germany in 1991.The band received its earliest recognition in the mid-1990s by touring with My Dying Bride, Tiamat and Atrocity.Much like the latter two groups, the band had begun as traditional death metal, then evolved with an industrial music and gothic metal musical direction on later albums. The band would receive heavy rotation on MTV Germany, and would also make appearances at various extreme metal festivals, including Germany's Wacken Open Air in the years 1996, 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2008, in addition to inclusion on Nuclear Blast compilation samplers. The band re-signed to Massacre Records in 2006 after a 10-year stint with Nuclear Blast; Massacre had been the band's first label.Active for over 20 years (with a brief split between 2001 and 2003) they are among one of Europe's longest running gothic metal bands.

Album:

It is not a secret; it has never been actually, maybe just a means to frighten others. Largely stated rather bluntly over the years, but our demise is pending, this time, hurdling another version of our death, by a deadly virus. Plenty of movies about were produced; lots of zombie flicks and illiterate B-Sides skirmishes were inflicted upon the public to stretch the boundaries of imagination. The German CREMATORY probably didn’t have to undergo brainstorming in order to come up with the theme, yet their Industrial / Gothic Metal manner, which has been developed over the years, contributed to a futuristic horror world thrown right in the face evaluating by their tracklist of their new album, "Antiserum", via SPV / Steamhammer Records. Definitely, judging by this album in general, this is not the CREMATORY I used to know and admire; devoted to indulge Death Metal with their Gothic presence, yet at least I am grateful that these guys haven't really lost their touch in getting right through the punch lines. In comparison to earlier releases that emphasized the downfall of the Death Metal elements of the band's music, for example "Awake", "Act Seven", "Believe" and even "Revolution", which was back in the day the second album of CREMATORY that I got to know, this new release accentuates the marginal process of the iron welding Industrial revelation of CREMATORY, laying down the lines in a closer proximity to RAMMSTEIN or DEATHSTARS or even a part time DJ SKAZI rather than their older image, which was much preferable by yours truly. The album's songwriting presents formulations of Pop at the most, getting right there to the punch lines, a chorus usually combining heavily low end growls along and clean vocals. Other than that, the image remained practically the same all throughout each and every one of the songs, other than the intro; nothing really varies, like a repetition with different sartorial. I guess that the band's musical ideas would be perceived as pretty obvious, however, CREMATORY maintained a fine standard on producing catchy tunes, filled with a heavy and thick blackened Metallic negativity prolonging a slow demise, in an emotional kind of way, spreading the drama all over the place with great vocals and groovy rhythms, as elegant as always. The title track, "Antiserum" and "Irony Of Fate" are the album's highly expressed tracks in terms of music, former being somewhat melodic with its guitaring, there is a slight reminder of the early 00's stuff, like dreadful hymns, on a positive note, smudged by utter bitterness, yet quite magical. "If You Believe" and "Inside Your Eyes", insinuating the duo lingual German meets English combo of lyrics, nice tune to it, catchy tunes following the band's tradition, not that brilliant music wise, but for a reason there I didn't care that much as even if this formula has been suffocated for quite a while. The emotional ends, though with a bit of frostiness, paved under a fine greyish foundation of simple implanted Industrial Goth. Closing this down, I expected a bit more out of this album as CREMATORY has been delivering heart throbbing tunes for a vast period of time, and I believe that they are a bit stuck in the Pop monograms way too much, and a fresh perspective is urgently needed.

Album:

German gothic metal act CREMATORY will release its thirteenth studio album, "Monument", on April 15 via Steamhammer/SPV.Infinitely more strongly than on its predecessor, "Antiserum" (2014), the twelve tracks on "Monument" are based on brute guitar riffs and hard-as-nails drum grooves, replete with sinister keyboard hooks and that mix of growls and clear vocals — some in English, some in German — that is so typical of this band. The group's fans will be thoroughly delighted with "Monument" and its dynamic sound. When the work on "Monument" commenced in spring 2015, a personnel issue had to be settled in the CREMATORY camp: Matthias Hechler, guitarist, clear voice and a style-defining member for 17 years, had left the band for private reasons. That his departure went off without animosity or internal quarrels was confirmed by Matthias in an interview on the "Live At Wacken 2014" DVD. Following his decision, CREMATORY made a virtue out of necessity, enlisting two successors: Tosse Basler (SCAPEGOAT, AVALANCHE) joined the fold as rhythm guitarist and clear vocalist, and Rolf Munkes is CREMATORY's new lead guitarist."Tosse and Rolf have brought a breath of fresh air to the band. They've really inspired us with their powerful style and phat guitar sounds," rejoices drummer Markus Jüllich, who composed the songs again with producer Kristian "Kohle" Bonifer before going on to produce them together at the Kohlekeller Studio. The result is a gothic metal opus that positively bursts with energy, featuring twelve diverse numbers with different degrees of toughness, including double guitar parts and guitar solos. The opener, "Misunderstood", which is supported by the first video release, is probably the most metallic number of CREMATORY's career. Markus refers to the track as an "ideal introduction, not only to our new album but also to our upcoming shows." The ballad "Save Me", which Jüllich/Bonifer wrote some time ago and have now approved for release in view of the new lineup, presents a stark contrast."As far as I'm concerned, this number has an orchestral flair," Jüllich reckons. "It suits Tosse and his timbre perfectly." Talking of which: because of their new team, CREMATORY have honed the homogenous blend of frontman Felix Stass's raw growls and the clear voice of their new band member Tosse Basler even more finely than ever before. The album carries its symbolic title with justification and the twelve impressive songs are undoubtedly a real monument to this group's amazing creative powers. In line with this, the cover artwork is both classy and sublime: for the third time in succession, CREMATORY, worked with Hungarian artist Peter Sallai. As in the productional collaboration between Markus Jüllich and Kristian Bonifer, the band has relied on tried and tested collaborators without repeating or indeed copying themselves.

Album:

Nearly three decades into their career, Germany’s Crematory are praised as one of the prime leaders in European Gothic Metal. Since 1991, Crematory have remained a consistent factor in the scene releasing fourteen full length albums beginning with 1993’s Transmigration all the way to 2018’s Oblivion. As the follow up to Oblivion, Crematory are proud to announce the release of their unprecedented fifteenth studio album, Unbroken, slated to drop on Friday, March 6, 2020 via Napalm Records.Originally starting out as a Death Metal band, Crematory eventually morphed into a hybrid mix of Gothic Metal, Industrial, and Electronic Dance – more so focusing on the second two. Going mostly by first names and nicknames, Crematory’s current line-up consists of classic members “Felix” (Lead Growl Vocals), Markus (Drums and Programming), Katrin (Keyboards and samples), as well as Rolf (Lead Guitar), Jason (Bass), and Connie (Clean Vocals and Rhythm Guitar). Overall, Crematory have spent these years sewing their passion for life into the music they have created as one of the most tenured bands in Euro Goth Metal.Entering a new decade, Crematory are ready to unleash the darkness of Unbroken into the Metal stratosphere. Made up of fifteen new tracks, Unbroken focuses on the transition of life and happiness and the emotional struggle of it all. Pressing play for the first time, the eponymous title track kicks off Unbroken with a vocal that screams the word “UNBROKEN!” which is followed by a wall of sound that makes this track sound a little like Marilyn Manson. One of the heavier tracks, the essence of the song pleasingly expresses Crematory’s love of music and the romance of it all (“Hello, we have returned, Never really gone”). Next, the tear drop like keyboard notes and energetic hook of “Awaits Me” presents a serene demeanor even with growl vocals.Spirited, “Rise and Fall” portrays a journey from ashes to triumph where the growl vocals and the clean vocals, though different, still bear a complimentary resemblance to each other. Thereafter, “Behind the Wall” offers a heavily industrial and electronic sound. With a rising melody, “The Downfall” enjoys entertaining the idea of the darkness. As the most different track on Unbroken, “I am” has a more showy type of rhythm far apart from Metal. Keeping it going, Crematory praise their “Broken Heroes” before the more top heavy “A Piece of Time” arrives. Later, “Abduction” has possibly the catchiest and appealing keyboard hook on the album. Then, “As Darkness Calls” gives a dynamic vivacity that seems to echo Crematory’s vision for this music. Lastly, “Like the Tides” is a raw piano ballad with orchestration that gives a finality to the overall emotion endured inside Unbroken.Looking at the big picture, Crematory’s Unbroken offers a look into a world where good things are taken away in the blink of an eye as mankind battles to live through it all. The stand out tracks on Unbroken would have to be the song “Unbroken” and “Rise and Fall.” Overall, the majority of Unbroken leans heavily on straight up Electronic Dance and Industrial sounds with a few tracks that lean a bit more on the side of Heavy Metal. Anyone who has been a longtime fan of Crematory knows the band has an energy and sound all their own with a sincere focus on deep lyrical content and Unbroken is no different.

Album:

Inglorious Darkness is chock full of dark and resonating hymns, setting off with title track "Inglorious Darkness" - a true Gothic Metal anthem and a worthy opener that sets the mood for whats to come. "Break Down The Walls" hits direct, accented by a gentle melody wrapped in Rockn´Roll Drums that will infiltrate the listeners brain, and is further solidified by the clean vocals of Felix in the verses mixed with the mighty growls in the chorus. Standout track "Trümmerwelten" lyrically illustrates a dystopian scene, while opulent keyboards build epic melodies to create orchestral, symphonic soundscapes underlined by heavy drumming. Monumental career highlight track "Tränen der Zeit" shines as bright as its original version - one of the highpoints of the bands famous live shows - but in a modern new light. The band breathes new life into one of their all-time classics, engulfing the listener in melancholy and nostalgia alike reuniting with an old friend. On tracks like "Sound Of My Life" and "Not For The Innocent", the bands tried-and-true use of keys and electronic elements are a noted standout, while tracks such as "Das Ende" blaze with headbang-inducing stomping drums and hammering energy as German lyrics further intensify the Gothic Industrial Metal aura. With Inglorious Darkness, CREMATORY prove that their passion burns brighter than ever, and that even after more than 30 years, they are solidified as a Gothic Metal genre giant.
