Bio:

AVATARIUM has only been “alive” for about one and a half year, but already is the word spreading rapidly about this unique band and it’s special blend of heavy adventurous music. Jethro Tull….Blue Oyster Cult…Sabbath…Rainbow…. It’s all there together with some delicate moments of beauty and frailness that you rarely find in a band these days.In AVATARIUMS music you will also hear tangents of pop and 60’s influences. It all began last winter when Leif needed help to demo a couple of songs he was working on, and Marcus offered to help. Weeks turned into months and a few songs became a full length album that is being mixed as we speak by well known Swedish engineer Ronny Lahti. AVATARIUM the album, came out in november 2013.In early 2014, AVATARIUM felt the need to break new musical ground and, after listening to some old vinyl records, the desire to get closer to this kind of material was born. With a new demo track at hand, Edling was joined by Jidell to work on the song that would be called "All I Want".While the two musicians got deeper into exploring where they want to take the music of AVATARIUM and how they can keep things interesting for themselves and for the fans, yet another song was created, and the idea to make a new EP was fully set.The old spirit comes even more alive, with psychedelic percussionist Michael Blair, who has worked with Tom Waits and Lou Reed, among others, guesting on "All I Want".Commented Jidell: "[Michael] showed up at the studio with a big 'bag of tricks' with metals, crashers, shakers and a lot of strange things which he made sound like if you throw in a punkrocker at Woodstock and feed him with psychedelic pills!" About the new songs, he adds: "We tried to keep things simple and spontaneous during the recordings, something I hope people will be able to hear. Also, I think that Jennie-Ann Smith has reached new levels with the way she sings on both of the new songs!"

Album:

The second album from Avatarium blends Candlemass-style doom metal with Rainbow-inspired hard rock and emotive female vocals to great effect. More rounded and elegant than its self-titled predecessor, ‘The Girl With The Dragon – sorry – Raven Mask’ is a bold, confident and sumptuous offering, with enough depth and texture to absorb the listener throughout its eight tracks.‘The Girl With The Pearl – sorry – Raven Mask’ touches greatness in parts. ‘Pearls And Coffins’, for example, is a thundering, menacing monster, while the final track, ’The Master Thief’ and the enormous ‘The January Sea’ are pretty spectacular too. ‘Run Killer Run’ is an effective and effervescent slab of early Cathedral doom-groove, with maybe a hint of Trouble. It feels kind of wrong to describe doom pioneer Leif Edling as anything other than an innovator, but even when he and his crew are drawing inspiration from others who have gone before, they do it with natural style and power.Elsewhere, the album settles into a more pedestrian pattern. ‘Ghostlight’ is a feminised, rockier version of good old Candlemass, but then it stops and stumbles off to become something less impressive, sucking upon the teat of classic Rainbow but not quite moulding the track it into the massive epic whole it had threatened to become. Fans who relished the jaunty, stop-start quirks of ‘Moonhorse’ from the debut release will undoubtedly love Avatarium’s new album, while those who appreciated the more graceful ‘Deep Well’ or ‘Bird Of Prey’ will find plenty to enjoy too. Each band member’s technical skills are on display to be admired. Guitarist Marcus Jidell dons his Ritchie Blackmore hat and struts his stuff, while keyboard player Carl Westholm is given license to twiddle as many knobs as he can get his hands on, like some kind of gleeful 70s synth wizard. Jennie-Ann Smith’s fragile, ghostly vocals combine with pulsating organs and steel-edged guitar tones to create a rich, compelling soundscape. This site makes no apology for its rose-tinted love affair with Candlemass founder Edling, such has been the enduring impact of the Swedish bass basher’s contribution to metal. ‘The Girl With The Raven Mask’ is a worthy addition to his mighty canon of work. In truth, there are few genuine surprises as this glorious prog-tinged doom opus unfolds, but, typically, you get lots of dark, searing riffs, regal choruses and thoroughbred quality.

Album:

With expectations reaching sky-high, Sweden’s rising stars Avatarium return with their latest long player for Nuclear Blast records. Brainchild of Lief Edling of Swedish doom metal legends Candlemass, the band was founded in 2012 with SOEN guitarist Marcus Jidell. The band is rounded out by vocalist Jennie-Ann Smith, Bassist Mats Rydstrom, Drummer Lars Skold and Keyboardist Carl Westholm. In five brief years Avatarium has released two EP’s and two critically acclaimed albums. With a sound that mixes the classical doom riffing of early Black Sabbath and the energy/inventiveness of Mark II era Deep Purple with softer Blues tones it’s not hard to see why they have risen so fast and far. The real talent in Avatarium’s songwriting is the ability to pay homage to late 60’s vibes and sounds, while at the same time creating a thoroughly modern update of truly classic heavy rock. The album opens with the riffs and organ bursts of “Into The Fire-Into The Storm”, before Jennie-Ann Smith soars in with a clean melodic chorus. From “A bat out of hell” to “A Griffin in flames” the lyrics are reminiscent of epic 70s fantasy imagery, thankfully leaning towards Rainbow and Stormbringer rather than Dungeons and Dragons. “The Starless Sleep” follows a similar groove, with a the sound firmly rooted in classic rock rather than traditional Doom Metal – think a modern, superbly melodic sound build on the firm foundations of Uriah Heap.“Road To Jerusalem” really opens the record up, with a smoldering almost psychedelic guitar groove, before an acoustic prog vibe develops. Although it marks a slight shift away from the more catchy and polished gothic melodies and heavy riffs of earlier songs like “Boneflower” its still a satisfying sound that will surely reward repeated listening.“The Sky At The Bottom Of The Sea” lands just the right side of a late 60’s sound, with the heaviness coming not only from the guitars but from the, distinctly Deep Purple sounding, blast of Hammond Organ. Those were days when one guitar solo per song just wasn’t enough. Thankfully, Jidell has the skill and, more importantly, the taste to craft melodic solos that add, rather than distract from the song. When combined with Jennie-Ann Smith’s singing about “Lighting”, “Mountains” and “Underground lakes” it is gloriously old-school without feeling contrived or re-hashed.In a genre where even the old masters (Blackmore, Hughes) wont take it easy and repeat themselves, Avatarium impress by the sheer craft of their songwriting. Penultimate track “A Kiss (From The End Of The World)” is a perfect example in point starting off with Jidell’s haunting;y beautiful acoustic blues picking that channels early Peter Green, the song kicks into full-blown guitar and Hammond organ led assault, before drifting into the cosmos on Jidell’s intertwining guitar solos. This is music that has been well crafted and lovingly recorded and it shows. The album ends with the almost regal melancholy of the title track “Hurricanes and Halos”, a rising and falling guitar instrumental that slowly drifts off and away. Faults are few and minor: considering the effort that went in to modernizing a classic sound and genre, it might have been nice to pair it with a similarly modern or distinctive album artwork rather than a slightly generic vinyl design ( I can’t imagine Sweden is lacking in talented gothic artists! ),but that’s really a matter of personal taste.Avatarium deliver a very satisfying, old-school album that invites the listener on a journey of epic fantasy and sonic pleasure. Perfect for fans of classic heavy rock, “Hurricanes and Halos” adds yet another gripping chapter to the story of a band that have built an impressively consistent body of work in a fairly brief time.
