Bio:

Formed in the bars of Helsinki, Finland in the summer of 1989 by Jyrki 69, Archzie (formerly of Syyskuu), Timo-Timo, Lotto and Bazie; The 69 Eyes originally had a glam metal sound and were compared to other Finnish Sleaze Metal acts such as Smack and Hanoi Rocks. The band's lineup has stayed the same since 1992 when drummer Jussi 69 replaced original drummer Lotto who had played on the band's first two 7 inch vinyl singles. The 69 Eyes are a multi-platinum selling Finnish rock band. They are currently signed to EMI Finland. The band's albums are now distributed worldwide. The End Records acts as the band's official North American distributor, as Nuclear Blast Records provides distribution in Mainland Europe, Ireland and the UK. Australia will be handled by AmpHead Music. All Asian and Latin American releases are handled by EMI affiliates.

Album:

Finnish goth metallers THE 69 EYES will release a new compilation album, "The Best Of Helsinki Vampires", on November 1. 2013.The collection will include a brand new song, "Lost Without Love", written by the singer Jyrki69 and dealing with situations he and the band's drummer, Jussi69, have both gone through."The Best Of Helsinki Vampires" is a full best-of collection, spanning a quarter of a century of band history. From the early days of fame with »Wrap Up You Troubles In Dreams« (1997), to the stardom of the latter years with »Devils« (2004) and »Back In Blood« (2009), »The Best Of Helsinki Vampires« features 28 tracks. This is a pretty epic Best Of album, spanning 28 tracks across 25 years. Most bands will never be that prolific.I haven’t actually heard The 69 Eyes before but they’re certainly a band I’ve been aware of.As is the case with Best Of albums like this it’s essentially a greatest hits package, and the quality of the songs reflect this.It shows a remarkable consistency over the band’s long career. Times, style and fortunes may shift and change, but a good song is a good song regardless. These are catchy, memorable, Gothic-infused Rock songs with personality and choruses aplenty. The singer has that kind of deep, charismatic voice that is essential for this kind of music and it’s easy to see why he has captivated so many hearts over the decades with his vocal performance. There is a lot of music on this release, almost 2 hours in total. But even given the constraints of the genre there’s a decent amount of variety here, with everything from up-tempo rockers, moody slower songs and outright ballads getting a chance to shine. The band have suffered no shortage of inspiration over the years, that’s apparent. From my own point of reference, they combine elements of HIM, Ashbury Heights, Mono Inc., Paradise Lost, Tiamat, Type O Negative, Moonspell and Sentenced; although I’m well aware that it’s probably the other way around in reality. With such a wealth of riches in one package, if this is your kind of music then it’s hard to go wrong with The Best of Helsinki Vampires.

Remember when the booklets used to be as exciting as the album itself?! It will actually have five different covers being such a folder — each member of the band can be used as a cover creature of their own."Ville has really succeeded in capturing the classic movie vibe for the shots without any special make-up or photo shopping."THE 69 EYES are the universal rock 'n' roll monsters — not so many of us left anymore. So from real fans, I wish they would get the actual CD in their hands to get the full album treatment as we have planned it to be experienced!".The first making-of "Universal Monsters" teaser trailer takes fans into the beginning of the album's recording sessions with producer Johnny Lee Michaels and drummer Jussi 69 in nighttime Helsinki.Regarding "Jet Fighter Plane", Jyrki said: "The song has a dark early '80s kind of vibe. I wrote the lyrics those Cold War-era times in my mind. Strangely, the world has totally returned into those dark days again after recording the song."He added: "It's been some 15 years since we recorded 'Blessed Be' and 'Paris Kills' albums with producer Johnny Lee Michaels here in Helsinki. You can consider 'Universal Monsters' as a follow-up to those records. Nobody makes this kind of music anymore."

Album:

It’s been quite a while since Finnish Goth rockers The 69 Eyes released an offering and you might feel that they may have gotten rusty over the past couple of years as Goth has faded into more of a fashion trend than a lifestyle. You’d be right that they’re definitely a bit older as the video for “27 & Done” seems to showcase, but these vampires just aren’t ready to be put into a coffin yet. As a matter of fact, they’ve released one of their strongest albums in years with a fantastic mix of heavy and light numbers that should appeal to any fan of Type O Negative, Gothminister, Lacrimas Profundere and Tiamat, among others. “Two Horns Up” starts the disc on a relatively heavy note with some added harsh vocal influences here and there, but West End really sets sail when single “27 & Done” comes into play, a song that I first assumed was about annihilating yourself before the age of thirty, but then realized was about the infamous twenty-seven club. The first time I’d heard this track, I immediately went back to play it again, so I can assure you that the single represents the very best of this album. We all know that there is more to an album than it’s singles and that’s where our next cut “Black Orchid” comes in, slowing the mood a bit as “Change” transforms the experience into a piano laden affair which features one ofthe best vocal performances on this album. There’s even a small spot for a rock solo, which some may feel is out of place, though I would consider just right. It doesn’t necessarily take from the mood of this immensely passionate number and I feel that fans shouldn’t be too muffed about it. The 69 Eyes don’t want you to forget they are a rock band and there are couple of heavy riffs utilized on the piece. “Burn Witch Burn” almost feels like the punk beginnings of Goth music in general, quickly calling to mind Bauhaus. Again, a couple of heavier riffs and even some quick drum taps near the end help to give this more of an upbeat modern feeling, though not taking away from the dreary atmosphere that fans already know and love.“Cheyanna” builds on that with yet another single-worthy cut that feels right at home for this kind of music. And what Goth album would be complete without a nod to a horror movie? You’ll get that with “Last House On The Left.” As I don’t want to reveal too much more about the disc, I think it’s only appropriate to mention the blues influenced finale, “Hell Has No Fury” which is a perfect way to end a performance of this caliber. It calls to mind a little bit of Danzig and perhaps even some Johnny Cash in places. Acknowledging the man in black is a perfect send-off note for one of Goth’s most influential acts, even several decades later. There are a lot of people who know how to dress Goth and believe me, you can find a lot of tutorials online for it – but for those of us who’ve been around since the beginning, we realize that Goth is more than just simple fashion and represents a culture and lifestyle that feels wholly prevalent on West End. Simply put, this is what I call Goth.

Album:

Finnish rock icons The 69 Eyes once again attempt to marry their Nordic goth roots with their affinity for the California Sunset Strip on the new album Death of Darkness. It’s a tricky combination to navigate as evidenced by the styles clashing throughout these 10 tracks, some of which were released as long as a year ago along the writing process. Nonetheless, you gotta give the Helsinki vampires points for originality and experimentation. The title track opens the coffin appropriately, being a moody goth toe-tapper with a haunting guitar lead. Vocalist Jyrki 69 surprisingly works in a few aggressive screams early on to break up his signature baritone delivery. Although his tone has been compared to Elvis, I find his patterns and voice are more reminiscent of David Bowie’s. The modern rockabilly banger “Drive” follows, which was technically the release’s first single, dropping in September 2022. It then became the title for the EP, whetting appetites for the full-length.“Gotta Rock” gets the blood pumping with its flowing bass line by bassist Archzie, and is a respectful nod to the Finnish band Boycott. Jyrki 69 aces the playful yet seductive lyrics, notably during the chorus of “Don’t give me jive, give me rock n’ roll!” The morbid vibes return with “This Murder Takes Two,” a gloomy country song that was written for a collaboration with Johnny Cash’s son which didn’t manifest. Kat Von D from the reality TV show LA Ink lays down a passionate guest vocal on this doomer. The full-length then takes a wrong turn for a while, starting with “California”. By wrong turn I mean it brightens up, sounds repetitive, and really pays homage to the band’s glam side. Although “California” lyrically taps into the bleak and seedy side of Hollywood and has a howling guitar lead, its surfer energy falls flat. The next four tracks disappointingly follow suit until the closer “Outlaws” rights the ship with its dark and triumphant chorus.Perhaps The 69 Eyes’ strategy of releasing material as they went along writing Death of Darkness backfired a bit; the LP awkwardly comes off as a tale of two EPs. However, there are plenty of highlights and songs of strong character pouncing from the shadows. And again, give these 30-plus-year veterans props for finding ways to be unconventional. Grab their concoction when it releases on April 21 via Atomic Fire Records.

Line Up:

Jyrki 69 (Jyrki Pekka Emil Linnankivi) - lead vocals
Bazie (Pasi Moilanen) - lead guitar, backing vocals
