It’s the album that spawned the name ‘Nashville Pussy’, and houses the definitive live take of ‘Great White Buffalo’.The sound is awesome… why now more than three decades later nobody is able to capture a live show in this quality?Double Live Gonzo! was recorded at multiple shows.With Derek St. Holmes on most lead vocals, Ted and the gang bring the rock and roll noise to the best party in town. All you have to do is hit play and hold on tight. It’s an intimidating track list at first: three songs run over 10 minutes, with the majority over 5:00.There is Terrible Ted on the front cover, covering his ears as if in pain from the powerful feedback contained inside.Ted’s hits are present (‘Catch Scratch Fever’, ‘Stranglehold’, ‘Yank Me Crank Me’) but are overshadowed by more epic rock orgasms. ‘Great White Buffalo’ and its incredibly dexterous riff is the main attraction. Though this song was originally recorded by Nugent’s Amboy Dukes, this live version is the most relevant.Love Ted or hate him, no serious rockers should have to live without ‘Great White Buffalo’ in their collections. It’s all about that riff, which is hard to duplicate but impossible to forget.‘Hibernation’ grandstands with some equally impressive musical chops (as do all the songs). If you are looking for some ‘Wang Dang Sweet Poontang’, then uncle Ted has your prescription: it’s ‘Just What the Doctor Ordered’.Nugent has done a few live albums over the years, but none as beloved as “Double Live Gonzo!”. This serves the needs of the masses looking for some full bluntal Nugentity.His gut-busting guitar playing can’t be touched and the band simply rocks with Derek St. Holmes shining on lead vocals, sometimes sharing them with Ted.“Double Live Gonzo!” isn’t just for guitar players, but guitarists will absolutely dig Ted’s incredible licks and control of feedback. Few guitarists can command the instrument like Ted does.Players will find much to examine, while the average listener can just look forward to a double serving of golden arena live rock. No lyrical messages, just brutal sonic massages.As years went by and my vinyl copy began to become transparent from overplay, I was thrilled when Epic Records finally released “Double Live Gonzo!” on CD many years ago. What a crushing disappointment!The tapes had apparently never been mastered for CD release and sounded like somebody had taken an old cassette and burned it to CD. It was flat, horribly low-leveled and pretty much un-listenable.We had to wait several years but fortunately Rock Candy Records finally did a proper remaster and now “Double Live Gonzo!” sounds terrific.Originally a double-set album, the running time was over the 80 minutes. This reissue was planned in a single-CD so they had to trim a little, especially unnecessary audience noise, claps, shouts, etc.Now “Double Live Gonzo!” rounds 78 minutes and, as far as I can tell, the folks behind the remaster have deleted little, if anything, from the original 2 LP, perhaps recognizing that Ted’s between song banter is as important to this CD as the music itself.This remastering of “Double Live Gonzo!” sounds freaking great.Finally, fans of this classic Ted Nugent album can enjoy it on CD with clear, vibrant sound. Any self-respecting rocker should have a copy.
