Bio:

Tobruk was an English rock band, formed in 1981 during the NWOBHM movement, their sound was more melodic and polished After signing to EMI (Parlophone) in 1984 Tobruk went on a club tour before playing some dates with Diamond Head. They also toured the UK supporting UFO.They then ventured to Philadelphia to start recording their debut album, also titled ‘Wild On The Run” [(Parlophone / EMI) 1985]. Lance Quinn from Lita Ford and Bon Jovi-fame co-produced the album with the band. The album was released in May 1985 and tours followed supporting UFO, Tokyo Blade and Manowar.A second album was released through FM Revolver, called ‘Pleasure + Pain’.Then singer Tony Martin, joined but nothing came of it and the band split for good. Martin went on to join Black Sabbath. Tobruk guitarist Nigel Evans spent some time touring with Shy.Tobruk vocalist Snake (Stuart Neale) also had a stint in an early incarnation of The Wildhearts but never recorded officially with them, although some demos were produced. Mike Brown played bass in a short-lived band with Alan Kelly (drummer, ex-Shy) called Why The Rabbit shortly after Tobruk broke up. Keyboard player Jem Davies and drummer Eddie Fincher started the band Midnight Blue with one-time Yngwie Malmsteen and Rainbow (band) singer Dougie White and recorded ‘Take The Money And Run’ circa 1994. Davis also toured with UFO and had stints in Praying Mantis and FM.

Album:

Limited Edition re-issue featuring a bonus live disc. Here’s the hard to find remastered Limited Edition 2xCD of TOBRUK‘s awesome album “Wild On The Run“, including the 1983’s ‘Wild On The Run’ 7″ single (a different version of this terrific song), plus the ”Bonus Live Disc” including a rare Tobruk Live recording from 1985.Simply put, “Wild On The Run” is one of the greatest Melodic (Hard) Rock / AOR albums appeared in UK during the ’80s, mixing the nerve from the NWOBHM with the melody and smoothness of classic British AOR, layered harmonies / choruses and hooks to die for.Perhaps one of the most underrated and overlooked Melodic Rock / AOR releases of the mid-80s was Tobruk’s ‘Wild On The Run’. Unfortunately, unless you were a Hard Rock / Metal aficionado back then, this one might have been released right under your nose without you ever hearing about it.Tobruk seemed to have several of the qualities that made Bon Jovi and Lita Ford so popular during the 1985 time-frame (when Wild On The Run was originally released). Heck, they even used the Bon Jovi and Lita Ford producer in one Lance Quinn (ever recognize the resemblance in the opening keyboard line of “Falling” to Bon Jovi’s “Runaway”? Coincidence?).Some say their shortcoming was due to where they originated … Birmingham, UK. Birmingham was one of the cities that gave Metal fans some of the bands popular in the “New Wave Of British Heavy Metal” (NWOBHM) era … an era that was losing ground, if not completely lost, by 1985.Perhaps the inhabitants of Birmingham, at the time, did not look upon an uprising “Melodic Hair Band” with much favor and considered Tobruk to sound “too American.”Even the mighty UK music magazine, KERRANG!, at the time only awarded Wild On The Run a paltry 1 and three-quarter “K’s” out of five! ”Wild On The” Run was originally only a nine-track release, but exceptional melodic songs were abound like the title track, or one of the catchiest tracks from the era in “Falling,” easily among the greatest British AOR songs of all time. Yeah, listen to “Falling” in then tell me…Tobruk’s songwriting was poised to make waves, at least in the USA, as Bon Jovi had already started to do so. Unfortunately, the band couldn’t break the hold of their “Motherland” even after releasing a follow-up release.Sadly, in December of 2006 Tobruk vocalist Stuart ‘Snake’ Neale passed away from congestive heart failure. Majestic Rock Records saw it fit to re-release this underground classic with some added bonuses. On offer here, to attract die-hard fans that already own this release, is the inclusion of the original debut single released in 1983 on Neat Records in “Wild On The Run” along with “The Show Must Go On.” Also included is a second disc of a live radio broadcast performance from 1985.The live disc includes; “Wild On The Run,” “Alley Boy,” “Breakdown,” “Falling,” “Running From The Night,” and “She’s Nobody’s Angel.” The bass in the live sound recording is sometimes “boomy,” but overall the sound quality makes the disc worth owning for Tobruk and melodic rock fans to appreciate how good this band was on a live setting. And there’s, at the time, the unreleased “Alley Boy,” which was on the follow-up studio release Pleasure And Pain. This remastered reissue, with the inclusion of the original single and the live disc, is a respectful dedication to Stuart Neale’s memory. It’s also a must have for any serious ’80 Melodic Rock / AOR fan, a strong reminder of a terrific band who deserved a better fate.
