Bio:

Wisdom is a Hungarian power metal band from Budapest. Formed in the fall of 2001, the group is known for its practice of basing each song on a well-known quotation. Many of the band's lyrics and all of the album covers center on the story of an old man, a cult figure called Wiseman. The band originally consisted of bass player Mate Molnar and guitarist Gabor Kovacs. Molnar was a fan of Knovacs existing band Legendary, and the two agreed to form a new group together. They were later joined by Istvan Nachladal (Nahi) (vocals), Balazs Hornyak (drums) and Zsolt Galambos (guitar), who had also been a member of Legendary. The band was named after the 1986 film Wisdom.Wisdom played their first concert in Miskolc in 2002.[citation needed] In they were featured as a support act in the 2003 Iron Maiden tour Give Me Ed... 'Til I'm Dead Tour. They subsequently featured in the motorcycle magazine Born To Be Wild, which led to increased public exposure. Wisdom performed as a warm-up act for Saxon and were the support act for the UDO-Doro tour. Whilst on this tour the band was noticed by Ronny Milianowicz of Swedish/German band Dionysus who arranged a record company offer which would release the first Wisdom record, a 4-track single titled Wisdom EP and released in July 2004. It was circulated as a free CD with the Hungarian music magazine Metal Hammer. During the process of recording Hornyak left the group and was replaced by Csaba Czebely. After the release of the EP, Wisdom supported Europe and in early 2005 toured with the band Ossian.Molnar wanted to build up a narrative world around the name, Wisdom, based on Iron Maiden's Eddie or Megadeth's Vic. During the course of recording their first album, graphic designer Gyula Havancsak (Hjules) created the figure of Wiseman, who became the band's mascot. Each subsequent record released by Wisdom contained references to the character's biography. The band's first independent concert was held on the 19th of November 2005 in Budapest, and was called Keep Wiseman Alive. Originally a one-off gig, Keep Wiseman Alive ultimately evolved into an annual event. In 2006 Wisdom played as a warm up act for Helloween. In 2006 the band's first LP, Words of Wisdom, was released under Hammer Records.Peter Kern had by this point replaced Csaba Czebely as the band's drummer. The album was mastered at Finnvox studios. Wisdom then signed to Soundholic Records for the albums Asian release.Wisdom was nominated as a contender for Hungary's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2007, although they were not selected. In the spring of 2007, Wisdom embarked on a tour for the promotion of their own record, and also opened for Heaven and Hell at the Sziget Festival.During the tour, Nachladal left the band; Zoltan Kiss replaced him on vocals for their remaining concerts. After the release of the single At The Gates, the band took a hiatus from performing. Kern left the band due to health issues and was replaced on drums by Balazs Agota. After two years, Wisdom returned to performing, playing as the opening act for Judas Priest. The band recruited new vocalist Gabor Nagy in 2010and released a new studio album, Judas in April 2011. In order to promote the new album, Wisdom went on to tour in the fall of 2010; Nagy wore a mask for all the gig appearances as a promotional stunt. The album featured Mats Levén (Therion and Malmsteen as guest vocalists. Japan’s Spinning Records and United State’s CD InZane LLC subsequently released Judas. In autumn the band shot a new video for a track called Heaven and Hell. The shooting took place Festetics family's castle of Dég.At this time the band celebrated its 10th anniversary with a tour they named Wise Years, this concluded with their annual Keep Wiseman Alive concert in Budapest. In 2012 the band were signed by booking agency Rock the Nation and record company did Noise Art Records. Galambos was replaced on guitar by Mate Bodor. In August the album Judas was released worldwide and to promote it the band joined Sabaton on their Swedish Empire Tour.On the 27th of September, the band's third album was released titled Marching For Liberty. It was distributed internationally through NoiseArt records. The album entered the official Hungarian Album Charts (Mahasz) at number 1. Fabio Lione (Rhapsody, Vision Divine, Kamelot Angra) sang several parts in the title song. Immediately after the new release, the band started touring in Western-Europe alongside Powerwolf. At the 7th annual Keep Wiseman Alive show, Powerwolf performed as the guest act.

Album:

Hungarian born power metallers, Wisdom, are an extremely frustrating while at the same time supremely satisfying group of fellows. On one hand, they're one of the most generic and cookie cutter power metal bands to ever grace the planet. Basically each and every song they've ever written has followed every cliche laid down by genre progenitors like Helloween, Hammerfall, and Sonata Arctica. You listen to any given album and you know exactly what you're going to get, almost down to which melodies will appear and which songs will be the more aggressive one based purely on song titles. On the other hand, they are bubbling over with songwriting talent that renders their reliance on heavy handed cliches relatively moot. Their 2013 opus, Marching for Liberty is one of the more finely crafted works of art in terms of catchy replayability in all of modern power metal, eschewing grandiloquent orchestrations in favor of a meat-and-potatoes style of muscle bound riffage underneath an immaculate sheen and pristine vocal performance. The predecessor, Judas, is no slouch either, replete with some of the catchiest numbers they'd ever pen (and even the happiest song about Silent Hill ever recorded).Unfortunately, this review is for neither of those two albums. Their debut is nothing more than adequate in the grand scheme of things. While on the surface it isn't much different from what they'd release in the future, it stands as something of a disappointment from two different angles. In the moment, it's a solid and respectable effort by a hungry young band, but it relies so much on the crutches of the genre that very little stands out in any way. Yet when looked at through the scope of the present day, it's a weak listen because their skill is showcased so superbly on later records. As such, Words of Wisdom stands as a bland, faceless power metal album apart from the odd song or two."Holy Vagabond" is a phenomenal song, with a chorus that'll incessantly worm its way into your skull and refuse to leave until you listen to it several times in a row, which quickly reveals itself as the band's biggest strength. What they lack in great vocals or flashy guitar playing, they make up for with an ear for melody on par with greats like Blind Guardian and Running Wild. Most songs on the album are a flash of white noise occasionally punctuated by a stunningly crafty chorus. It may have something to do with the vocalist being exposed as fairly weak and faceless during verses when he's singing solo, but when he's layered over himself a bunch of times it stands out as being much more powerful and entertaining. Thankfully, the benefit of hindsight shows the growing pains of his rookie season, as he will only improve from this point forwards. I don't mean to imply that Words of Wisdom is softened simply because of how good Marching for Liberty is, it's more that it's just highlighting all of the band's potential as initial weaknesses. There's clearly room to develop here, as the songwriting is strong, cliche as it may be. So the silky smooth vocals end up distractingly lame on this album, and the unimaginative percussion and stock riffs do nothing to help this stand out on the merits of the playing itself. The band's real strength lies in their songwriting skills, as mentioned. "Holy Vagabond" would be a concert staple if it was penned by Helloween (and let's be real, it might as well be), "Wisdom" carries an ohrwurm of a chorus, "Wheels of the War" stands out as being the most aggressive song on display, with a blazing fast and startlingly heavy verse riff and some cool viking styled war chants in the chorus, et cetera et cetera. The problem is that any power metal fan who's heard more than three of the classic bands has heard all of these songs before. Most of them are good songs at the very least (barring "Unholy Ghost", being the obligatory awful ballad that basically every power metal band seems determined to shoehorn into every album), so it's a fun listen every once in a while, it's just not anything you'll ever be itching to hear beyond "Holy Vagabond". They can do much better, Judas and Marching for Liberty show that in spades.Basically Words of Wisdom is an unrefined and sketchy album that has strengths in places, but overall is pretty bland. I like the band plenty, but this is solidly and indisputably their weakest album.
