Bio:

Here is the new Melodic Rock sensation called ATTRACTION.These guys from New York can easily be described as the new sensation, because their super commercial late 80s US Melodic Rockstyle on their debut CD ‘Get up’n’shake’ is not only sounding superb, but is also up there with similar bands such as VALENTINE, HEAVENS EDGE, NETWORK, FIREHOUSE, SAVANNAH, RED DAWN, 80s DOKKEN, DANGER DANGER.It was the late 80's, and hair was the rage... not the hippy play, but rather on the heads of rockers and popstars alike. As the excesses of the 80's relinquished to the excesses of the 90's a little band from Seattle broke the vanity mirror of history, ushering in the plaid-laden Grunge age.
It changed a lot. Especially in music. And tossed aside was a whole genre of music (or two, perhaps) which has now made a bit of a resurgence...
In 1988, a little Connecticut outfit called Attraction (made up of songwriter and guitar virtuoso Marc Proto, Bassist and girl magnet Brad L'Nart and drummer Freddie J.) was freshly without a voice. Their new frontman showed up just in time to keep the momentum rolling. Back from several years spent in Boston, studying, performing and learning the inside of the club scene, Adriaen C. Stone (the alter ego of Chuck Hayback) grew up in New Haven, and was back to start trouble at home. The fit was immediate, and the practice space, atop the historic Exclusive Shop building of New Haven's 9th square district, was acquired. It was huge, and on the top of the city (OK, just the 5th floor, but that's pretty high for New Haven). The Band was there almost every night writing and practicing.
Before they ever hit a club, crowds would form outside, downstairs. The Attraction scene had started.
Throughout 1989, the guys hit any club they could, opening for National acts, or just entertaining the pseudo-euro-punks from Yale, or the big-hair lot of the local crowds. Unanimously adored, the quartet's (sometimes a quintet, when keyboardist Eddie Badamo could get off his EMT shifts) act tightened, and recording studio time was booked.
With the help of House of Lords frontman, James Christian and Engineer/Producer, Jeff Canata, tracks were laid for Summer Days, More Than You'll Ever Know and Storybook. Upon the release of these three songs in a "mini-cassette" EP (CD's were still to come) Attraction started to cull a strong following.
Club dates got bigger, and better, with a carnival-like atmosphere (think early RHCP or Fishbone). The guys were regulars at Toad's Place, a New Haven institution for live performances. In an attempt to create demand, the band spread themselves farther and wider, playing venues from NYC to Stone's second home, Boston.
Things were looking up, and a second guitarist was added, to round out and heavy up their sound. Jeff White was the perfect addition. His tight rhythm playing, energy and phenomenal stage presence added to the already powerful show. It certainly didn't hurt that Jeff was easy on the eyes. A growing segment of cougars (the term was at least a decade away from being coined) was starting to show up to see the boys do their thing.
Badamo called it quits, as the keyboards started losing their place in the songwriting. Plus, he was a damn fine EMT. I think his choice was a good one. Samplers, carrying the heavy, layered, ethereal background voices (recorded by Adriaen and Marc in the studio) made the band sound HUGE, and record companies started to come around, wooing the band.
One more personnel change was due in Late 1991. Freddie, whose feelings for Marc were becoming too strong to ignore, was replaced, abruptly by Jay Cole. If Jay weren't so damn cool, this might have been the end of the band. But, thankfully, Jay WAS that cool, AND good.
The band had been spending a lot of time recording, but only after Jay's straight forward, pulse-driving pounding was enveloped into the sound were they ready to cut tracks that would complete the Attraction sound.
Get Up and Shake, Save Me Now, Things Were Better, and Next Time were the result. A CD Get Up and Shake, was released. It sold well at their shows and through local music outlets.
Talks with several record companies followed wowing showcase performances in 92. Again, things were looking up...
But Music was changing. Green Day was the all over the radio. Pearl Jam was emerging. And of course, Nirvana releases Nevermind. Ironically, Adriaen's brother, Jack Hayback, was an engineering assistant who worked the sessions for the Earth-shattering Nirvana album.
While Adriaen loved, and leaned toward adopting the grunge attitude, the others preferred to get heavier (think Metallica or Anthrax).
Adriaen left, Brad took over singing and the band became Drastic Mood Swing, or D.M.S. They kept it going for about 3 years, even touring with the USO, performing for US troops.
The CD, Attraction, Get Up 'N' Shake was rereleased with three additional cuts, never finished to Stone's liking. Gone But Not Forgotten (with Brad providing the lead vocal track), Lickety Split and Love in Overdrive complete the 1999 release. It is available through Kivel Records.

Album:

This is another masterpiece totally stuck in the 80s, in the tradition of all the bands we used to love twenty years ago. Attraction come out of the blue to provide a nostalgia trip of epic proportions, proving that good music is relevant in any era, not just that era defined as they heyday of that particular sound. These guys from New York can easily be described as the new sensation, because their super commercial late 80s US melodic rock style on their debut album “Get Up ‘n Shake” is not only sounding superb, but is also up there with similar bands such as Firehouse, Valentine, Heavens Edge, Danger Danger, Red Dawn, etc.Listening to this brings you back to the 80s where girls wore skin tight jeans high heels and enough hair spray to tease a head of hair three feet in the air…This band can write super catchy melodic hook laden rock songs that will not get out of your head after you heard it once. Most of the songs are party anthems, with great harmonies, choruses, guitar work and production by House Of Lords frontman James Christian.“Get Up ‘n Shake” introduces you to what is about to slam your ears against the wall with pounding riffs, crisp vocals, a wall of backing vocals delivering the hugest of choruses, and although you might not expect it, some killer guitar too. Just listen it and you know you have gone back to the late 80s, because this song is chock full of harmonies and is si damn cheerful, you just can’t ignore to sing-a-long. “Save Me Now” is commercial heaven, with an energetic up tempo melodic rock style with heavy emphasis on rhythm guitars that reminds me of Heavens Edge and all the other mentioned bands, while the chorus is to die for. Great tune!!! Notable are the keyboards that have been added to the huge arena melodic rock sound of Attraction, because they were done by Mr. Pomp Jeff Cannata. The music of Attraction though has nothing in common with Cannata’s music and the keyboards are always pushed to the back. But in the song “More Than You Know” they are very much alive, because this song is a classic power AOR rock ballad in the best late 80s tradition of bands like Firehouse, Damn Yankees, etc. “More Than You Know” is a power killer ballad to hear with any girl you ever dreamed! “Story Book” is a sensational highlight in melodic glam hard rock, “Things Were Better” will be irresistible to all listeners with it’s perfect 80s style execution and memories, and “Summer Days” ensures that even if you don’t have a convertible car you will hacksaw the roof off your car just so you can play this with the top down, are the best on this record in my opinion. These three songs are all catchy up tempo AOR/melodic rockers with beautiful melodic harmony vocals, keyboards, sing-a-long choruses, memorable hookliness and this all packed in a superb 80s cheerful sound. The up tempo melodic rocker “Next Time” is one more amazing commercial glam, close to Danger Danger styled with a simple but catchy chorus. “Gone But Not Forgotten” is a classic power ballad, a semi up tempo melodic AOR rocker actually I said, very melodic and might have been radio friendly, while “Lickity Split” is a killer raunchy rocker and by the time the album finishes you haven’t heard of a filler, but just nine absolute gems in a row. The 28 seconds song “Love In Overdrive” closing the disc. Is a short acapella tune that features rather interesting harmony vocals. If you’re attracted to that late 80s pop metal sound, then this is a must own. This album is full of fun, catchy hard rock hooks that instantly sink into your ears and have you humming the songs for days to come, plus the choruses all have that big, punchy sound, complete with stacked backing vocals. Although this disc is the year of 1999 edition, all the tracks were apparently recorded between 1988 and 1991. Have I over-reacted to this CD? Perhaps, but for me this brings everything that was perfect about a genre of music and delivers it in one sensational hard rocking package. Highly Recommended!!!
