Bio:

Blutengel (German: Blood Angel) is a German musical group. It was formed by singer Chris Pohl (also of the groups Terminal Choice, Tumor, and Miss Construction and the owner of the Fear Section label) after he had to leave Seelenkrank due to contractual and legal problems. The lyrics are written primarily in German and English and are presented with male and female vocals.Blutengel was formed in 1998 after Chris Pohl had decided to give up the preceding project, Seelenkrank (which had released two albums), due to contractual problems. Just as its predecessor, Blutengel uses melodious electronic tunes in combination with both male and female voices. The lyrics are primarily in German and/or English and mixed between male and female vocals paired with electronic sounds and with songs often focusing on all aspects of love, from the tragedy of hopeless romance of vampires (all the way to the more animal aspects of desire) and aspects of death and the beyond travel. The first album Child of Glass, released in early 1999 and soon became popular with the already existing fan community but also attracted a huge number of new fans with songs like "Weg Zu mir" and "Beauty of Suffering". Kati Roloff and Nina Bendigkeit were responsible for the female vocals at that time. However, although the album was still present in the minds of the people, things became quiet for the project itself for quite a long time. Finally, in 2001, the second album Seelenschmerz was released and initiated a new era in Blutengel's short band history. The band formation changed as Nina had managed to cut her own successful path in the last two years, and Gini Martin joined the band as the second female voice alongside Kati. Catchy songs turned the album into an unexpected success, just missing the German Top 100 Album Charts, spurring Blutengel to appear live in front of fans. The first Blutengel gig ever (two years after the band was actually formed) took place at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen on June 1, 2001, in Leipzig, in front of 10,000 fans. At the end of 2001, the single Black Roses appeared with Constance Rudert as a session singer and the band performed at the Dark Storm Festival in which Constance also appeared in the stage at side of Kati and Gini. However, this was the last time the band would play with its original line-up. Kati and Gini left the band days later for personal and also unknown reasons and founded their own project, Tristesse de la Lune. Constance, who had only been recruited to add some spirit to the single "Black Roses", soon became an inherent part of Blutengel replacing Kati, then Chris Pohl managed to find a second equal female voice in Eva Pölzing, who was found soon afterwards to replace Gini.

Album:

Schwarzes Eis (Black Ice) is the sixth studio album from German futurepop band Blutengel.Dancing in the Light was released as a single preceding the album, with an accompanying music video.Almost every year BLUTENGEL delight their fans with new material and you have to give Chris Pohl credit for being a really busy guy. What hasn't been written about BLUTENGEL in the past and every second BLUTENGEL-hater finds it incredibly cool and funny for the umpteenth time to rant against Chris Pohl, his music and the latest work. Music, however, is still a question of personal taste and so in such cases it is mainly fatigue that spreads because of these mostly senseless judgements. Normal thinking people ask themselves why the numerous fans of BLUTENGEL are not simply allowed to enjoy their favourites as they are and as they are appreciated by these fans...It is precisely these fans who are treated to 15 new songs on the new album "Schwarzes Eis", which, compared to the other albums, can basically be described as "business as usual". In times when many bands go through a mostly mediocre further development (APOPTYGMA BERZERK, DE/VISON), this is first of all not a thoroughly negative thing. It is obvious that this also leads to a certain interchangeability, but at least you can be sure that you won't experience any nasty surprises. Schwarzes Eis" again offers pure BLUTENGEL with all the ingredients that have characterised the band for many years. There has been no talk of Gothic/Dark Wave for a long time anyway, instead BLUTENGEL offer soft electropop with a "dark touch". For some, this means catchy melodies, nice synth arches and soft electro sounds with either the vocals of frontman Chris Pohl or his playmates. Considering these features appreciated by the fans, "Schwarzes Eis" again reveals numerous nice songs like "Kind der Nacht", "Broken Girl", "Secret Places" or "My Darkest Nights".For the others, all these songs will again only leave a big question mark or sheer horror, and yet ... BLUTENGEL audibly feel comfortable in the clichés that are repeatedly - quite rightly - attributed to them. In places, the lard drips out of the speakers, the songs are often dominated by an exaggerated and flat pathos and also "Schwarzes Eis" is sometimes a slippery affair. But in the end the question is "So what?" - BLUTENGEL make their fans happy again with this new album and isn't that actually the only thing that really counts? "Schwarzes Eis" offers some really nice and successful songs in good old BLUTENGEL style, which can provide entertaining background music on a balmy spring evening with a glass of red wine on the balcony. Those who like to listen to melodic and soft electro are more than well served with "Schwarzes Eis", all others will voluntarily do without it anyway and may please do so without the meanwhile completely worn-out shouting. Those who only go with the flow because it is apparently "in & cool" to rant against Chris Pohl have only themselves to blame...Finally, it should be added that the double CD version of "Schwarzes Eis" also has the bonus CD "Behind The Mirror", which contains eight instrumental songs. A matter of taste - much more interesting is the limited box set, which comes with a third CD ("Redemption") containing ten new songs that did not make it onto the regular album and which musically tie in seamlessly with "Schwarzes Eis".
