Bio:

The origins of this Dutch quintet date back to 1983, when Godzilla were assembled from the remnants of the bands Van East and Zenith. Godzilla specialized in mainstream pop-rock material, but switched to "speed-metal" and changed their name to Blackout in 1984. The band comprised Bas Van Sloten (vocals), Mannes Van Oosten (guitar), Jean Hoffman (guitar), Alfred Dreuge (bass) and Jan Boxem (drums). After securing a contract with Roadrunner Records, they released Evil Game the same year. This proved a workmanlike collection of songs, constructed around heavy-duty, quick-fire riffs and dual lead soloing. Failing to make any significant impact, they disappeared from the scene within a year of the album's release. On first demo also Bianca van Wijk as a backup female vocals.Jens Hofman formed the band Stranger later on, released CD through Evil Game.Blackout came out of the darkness in the mid 80's, a time when metal music was just beginning to emerge. Formerly a pop-rock act, the band stormed into the metal scene with their classic Roadrunner debut - "Evil Game". This exclusive re-release brings back one of the most intriguing, yet omitted musical gems in heavy metal history... The LP conjoined all the best elements of traditional heavy metal, speed metal and hard rock. The music was catchy and melodic, but heavy enough to prove to anyone that it's 100% metal. With such highlights as "Bleeding Moon" and "Demon Eye Woman" (with an amazing opening riff, a bit similar to Van Halen), Blackout managed to introduce a truly outstanding musical formula, comparable to top names of the genre at that time. New digipak edition is limited to 1000 copies. Digitally remastered using 24-Bit process on a golden disc. Recording information: wisseloord Studio's, Holland.

Album:

This album "BLACK OUT - Evil Game" is the first and only official album released by the Dutch Heavy Metal band Blackout.Blackout is a Dutch Heavy Metal band from Zwolle, Overijssel, so far "Evil Game" has been their only official album released on vinyl.Probably one of the oldest Metal bands in the Netherlands is trying to make a comeback to the Metal world. Metal Mind Records did these guys good by re-releasing their old debut album from 1984, Evil Games. This album is a recapture of solid, basic, yet quite nostalgic Heavy Metal molded with elements of aged American Hard Rock.Blackout tells of a rather nice story of change. A year before the release of Evil Games, the band back then, called Godzilla, was actually a Pop-Rock project. After finding Metal a lot more appealing to them, the band turned out to become Blackout. After their reformation and change of style, they recorded a demo that changed their lives. Roadrunner Records, once a great label who knew whom to sign, caught interest in these guys and signed them. In 1984, Evil Games was out and the rest is history. In order to analyze an album as Evil Games, you would have to think the same as many thought back in the 80’s. Although Metal Mind Records did very good on remastering this release and bring it back to life, this one is still an 80’s production and writing fashion. The band’s attitude tended to the catchier and melodic side of the steel, while trying to be heavy and raspy. The music itself is quite ordinary, very similar to NWOBHM, Motorhead mixed with Van Halen. Evil Games showed Blackout as a band which had depended on a formula that many other bands used to get their Metal out. The difference between each band is the way they used it. Blackout, with their musical mixing and sense for melodies, operated their material quite well even if they did not offer a wholesome hit box. It is sad that back in the 80’s, this album never got the recognition it deserved. Some consider this band to be one of the first innovators of Speed Metal, however, it is rather hard to make it out from this release.Even though Evil Games, in a modern observation, may sound banal, it is still a relic taken from the 80’s. Through the sounds and auras of the tunes within it, you will feel 1984, which is considered as one of Metal’s first steps. Check out Evil Games by this cool band, which tries to come back to the people’s notion.
