Bio:

Heathen is an American thrash metal band originating from the Bay Area San Francisco, founded in 1984 by guitarist Lee Altus and drummer Carl Sacco. They have released three albums, Breaking the Silence (1987), Victims of Deception (1991) and The Evolution of Chaos (2010).Heathen was formed in 1984 by guitarist Lee Altus and drummer Carl Sacco (formerly of Metal Church), who later recruited lead vocalist Sam Kress and guitarist Jim Sanguinetti (Who went on to found the band Mordred). Shortly after their first gig in 1985, Kress and Sanguinetti left the group and were replaced by vocalist David Godfrey (formerly of Blind Illusion) and guitarist Doug Piercy (formerly of Anvil Chorus and Control). The band also recruited bassist Eric Wong around this time. This lineup debuted in early 1986 and soon became prolific around the Bay Area. Their early style could be described as the aggression of thrash metal combined with NWOBHM-style vocals and arrangements, acoustic intros or outros, and fast-paced melodic shred solos.Heathen's break came when they released their Pray For Death demo, which in 1987 resulted in their signing by Combat Records. Shortly after their signing Eric Wong left the band to join Piranha, and was replaced on bass by former Griffin guitarist Mike "Yaz" Jastremski.Heathen's debut album Breaking the Silence was released in 1987. The album was well received critically and featured one very successful single, a cover of the 1970s glam rock band Sweet's song "Set Me Free". The song got some rock radio airplay and the video received rotation on MTV's Headbanger's Ball. The band embarked on a tour in support of the album. In 1988 Carl Sacco left due to musical differences. He was replaced by Darren Minter. Mike Jastremski left the band shortly after, and the band went through number of bassists and vocalists between 1988 and 1991. In 1989 David Godfrey left the band due to personal and musical differences. For a few months the late ex-Exodus vocalist Paul Baloff became the band's vocalist. They also briefly toured with late Metal Church vocalist David Wayne. In late 1988, Rick Weaver was recruited from The Dispossessed who had opened for the Midwest leg of the Heathen's national tour. He left amicably in 1989 citing creative differences. In 1990, Godfrey (now going by David White) returned to Heathen. In order to record their album Victims of Deception, Heathen recruited Blind Illusion mainman Marc Biedermann to play bass in the studio. The album was released in 1991 through Roadrunner Records. Victims of Deception was considerably more technical than Breaking the Silence, featuring odd time signatures, more complex riffs and songs, tempo and key changes, and longer song lengths, and is often described as progressive thrash metal, retaining little of the NWOBHM influence its predecessor had exhibited. It was also highly critically acclaimed, though it was not quite as commercially successful as Breaking The Silence'. The band's cover of Rainbow's "Kill the King" and original ballad "Prisoners of Fate" were released as singles and had minor rock radio airplay. The band again toured in support of the album, notably touring Europe with Sepultura and Sacred Reich. That year Heathen found a permanent bassist in Randy Laire and toured extensively until the untimely death of Laire and his girlfriend in a car accident. The band replaced him with Jason Viebrooks. Doug Piercy departed from the band in 1992 and was replaced by Ira Black. The band planned to record a covers EP dedicated to Laire and his girlfriend as well as White's deceased brother Jeffery. But the band went on hiatus in 1992.Heathen reunited in 2001, its lineup comprising David White, Lee Altus, Ira Black, Mike Jastremski and Darren Minter, to play the Thrash of the Titans benefit concert to help Chuck Billy and Chuck Schuldiner raise funds for Billy's throat cancer treatment and Schuldiner's brain cancer treatment. The concert was a huge success, but in 2004, Jastremski left the band again, and was replaced by Ulysses Siren bassist Jon Torres. An EP, Recovered was released on Relentless Metal Records, consisting of Victims of Deception-era demos and newly recorded cover songs. A new demo was released in August 2005, containing three new songs.Heathen recruited Terry Lauderdale in 2005 to be the second guitarist in the group and toured across Europe. Also in 2005, Lee Altus joined Bay Area thrashers Exodus, but remained a member of Heathen. In November 2007, the band recruited Prototype guitarist Kragen Lum and Mark Hernandez to replace Darren Minter and Lauderdale.Minter returned to the band the following year. The band released The Evolution Of Chaos on King Records in Japan Dec 23, 2009, on Mascot Records in Europe Jan. 25, 2010, and on Mascot Records USA in America in February 2010.

Album:

Breaking the Silence is the first album by the American thrash metal band Heathen released in 1987 by Combat Records. As of 2006, the album sold about 100,000 copies worldwide.Thrash is an uneasy genre to appreciate as a metalhead. Its relentless aggression and macho attitude have been staples for many bands of this genre. Bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Overkill, Slayer, Testament, Kreator, and the like have just about exemplified these concepts. Unfortunately, these concepts can turn off a lot of those who wish to seek melody in their music. However, Thrash can mix its aggression with the melodies that is Speed and/or Power, and most of the time they're executed well. Heathen is no stranger to this hybrid of Speed/Thrash and they do their work diligently and carefully. They paid it off with Breaking The Silence, a masterpiece of Speed/Thrash. It sounds a lot like Metallica, but it's safe to say they are a more refined version of them. If only Metallica hadn't been crap after Ride The Lightning and sounded this good, they would've been much like Heathen. Heathen, in this sense, corrects the problems that plagued RTL-era Metallica by performing balls-out Speed/Thrash on this album, not resorting to any wankery whatsoever. This album is full of unadulterated Speed/Thrash; everything from the get-go is 49 minutes of pure ecstasy. The duo of Lee Altus and Doug Piercy prove themselves to be godly masters with their state-of-the-art riffs and solos. Carl Sacco easily schools Lar$ Ulrich with his carefully executed but venerable drumming. Mike Jastremski's bass can barely be heard in this album, but on the next LP after this one, he can be noticed on Fear of the Unknown and Heathen's song, and he does a better job than Cliff Burton. And as for the vocalist, David Godfrey (AKA David White), he is no Joey Belladonna, but he proves to be worthwhile on this album. His range lacks a little punch, so that keeps this album from being perfect. On to the music, we start off with Death By Hanging and it features a powerful finale-like crescendo in the beginning and then kicks off to some raging Speed/Thrash. The chorus is excellent. DEATH... BY HANGING! DEATH... FROM THE GALLOWS!! After that, around 3:14, a kick-ass solo proceeds. The song closes with a wonderful drum-and-guitar decrescendo. Goblin's Blade is a solid thrasher of a song that also features a nice chorus, a winning solo in the middle, and a thunderous finish. Open The Grave is the highlight of this album, with a great mid-paced number, a well-done soft section in the middle, and then it becomes relentless towards the end. Pray For Death will take you from the throat from beginning to end, as it is no-frills Speed/Thrash that never shows any mercy at all. You WILL headbang to this song. The Sweet cover of Set Me Free remains somewhat faithful to the original, and although it isn't up to par with the other songs, it is still quite good. The title track is yet another memorable Speed/Thrash song that doesn't transcend to any form of suckage at all. World's End is by far the best song here, as it beats Open The Grave by a margin with an even better display of balls-to-the-wall Thrash, though the beginning starts off soft and somewhat reminiscent of Stairway To Heaven. Finally, we get to Save The Skull which seals the deal with a large slab of Speed and Thrash that picks up the tempo quite a bit in the middle. A nifty solo begins here, and the end closes with possibly the grandest drum-and-guitar finale to be heard. You really have to hear this album to believe it.Yes, the band is even generous enough to let you download their songs in their website for free! Just go to http://www.heathenmetal.com and check out their discography. It's rather uncommon for a Metal band to mark their songs available for downloading, but with a band so undeniably good as Heathen, you won't be disappointed at all to see their songs. You thought Holy Terror was godly? They are nothing compared to Heathen. Heathen may possibly be just about the best Speed/Thrash band in Metal history, and this album has hit the nail on the head to prove it. And with their recently released demo in 2005 that has nothing but good ol' 1985-sounding Speedthrash songs, Heathen will strike again with their (hopefully good) new album. There have been tons of Speed and Thrash bands that try to be impressive with their music, be it Slayer, Kreator, Sodom, Agent Steel, Annihilator, or what have you. But none can be as venerable and masterful as Heathen. Metallica wishes they could sound this good. Recommended for Speed and thrash fans alike.

Album:

HEATHEN are a Bay Area Thrash Metal Band. They were formed in 1984 by Lee Altus formerly of other great Thrash Metal bands, ANGEL WITCH and EXODUS. They were unfortunately pretty much inactive from 1993 to 2001. They released an album called ‘’The Evolution of Chaos’’ back in 2010 and this is their first since the reissue to that album earlier this year. This is the first album to feature Jason Mirza on the Bass and Jim DeMaria on the Drums.Nothing better than something really fast and heavy when the cold weather is striking down in the Province of Quebec. HEATHEN should be explored, not stay hidden. What I am saying is that I don’t consider them as underrated nor ignored, but the fact of the matter is, they were lost in the shuffle of the Thrash Metal peak. You had so many Bay Area Thrash Metal bands back then and they didn’t get their due. It’s been one hell of a year for Thrash Metal, we had some really great albums from the likes of WARBRINGER, HAVOK and TESTAMENT. I know a lot of bands in the genre are working hard on new albums like ANTHRAX, METALLICA and MEGADETH, so it’s gonna be a great late 2020-early 2021 for the fan out there. HEATHEN packs a real punch and keep the tradition alive and pull out another great Thrash Metal album. They are a far more technical Thrash Metal band than a lot of the bands out there. The musicianship is highly underrated and rather addictive. I like bands that try something a tad different and the far more technical side of things is always a treat for the listener. They are very reminiscent of an older band called TOXIK, a highly regarded yet underappreciated band. Energetic and unrelenting catchy choruses make ground for some seriously enjoyable riffs. It’s a nice balance of Mid-Tempo stuff with the frenetic 80’s Thrash Metal pace. There is something for everyone and it’s a real throwback to their first release back in 1987 called ‘’Breaking the Silence’’.The high points for me were the title track, ‘’Shrine of Apathy’’ and ‘’The Gods Divide’’. Those are the songs I really want to hear live if we ever get back any concert at all in the next year or beyond. Those are standout and real headbangers, a throwback (again with that word!) to the heyday of the genre. They showed on this album that they are on the same boat as the other big bands out there in the world of Thrash Metal. They can dish it out like the best of them and they should be more appreciated and discovered again. It’s a damn shame that they were lost in the shuffle back then but now they are back to the forefront, ready to conquer again! A solid effort from an unsung band!
