Bio:

Anthrax is an American thrash metal band from New York, formed in 1981 by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker. The group was considered one of the leaders of the thrash metal scene during the 1980s. When the genre's popularity increased, Anthrax was one of its "big four" with Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. As of 2014 the band has released ten studio albums, a number of singles and an EP with American hip hop group Public Enemy. According to Nielsen SoundScan Anthrax sold 2.5 million records in the United States from 1991 to 2004, with worldwide sales of over 15 million.Noted for its live performances, Anthrax signed with the independent label Megaforce Records (which released the band's debut studio album in 1984). Lilker soon left the band to form Nuclear Assault, and was replaced by roadie Frank Bello. Vocalist Neil Turbin left shortly after and was replaced by Joey Belladonna. With a new lineup, the band recorded Spreading the Disease (distributed by Island Records) in 1985. Anthrax's third album, Among the Living, was released in 1987 to critical praise. The band experienced another lineup change in 1992, when John Bush replaced Belladonna as lead vocalist. Sound of White Noise was released the following year, peaking at number seven on the Billboard 200. Studio recordings during the 1990s saw the band, influenced by other genres, experimenting with its sound.Anthrax's lineup has changed several times. Paul Kahn and Greg Walls were early replacements for drummer Dave Weiss and bassist Kenny Kushner; the band has had a number of vocalists, including Neil Turbin, Joey Belladonna and John Bush. Scott Ian and Charlie Benante, who joined Anthrax in 1983, are the only band members to appear on every album; bassist Frank Bello has played on every album except the band's first. Belladonna returned to Anthrax for Worship Music, his first studio album with the band since 1990's Persistence of Time.

Album:

Fistful of Metal is the debut album by American thrash metal band Anthrax, released in January 1984 by Megaforce Records in the US and Music for Nations internationally. It includes a cover of Alice Cooper's "I'm Eighteen". This is the band's only album to feature Neil Turbin on vocals and Dan Lilker on bass.Danny Lilker and Scott Ian had been the original founders of the band, but singer Neil Turbin fired Lilker shortly after the release of the album, and without Scott Ian's permission. As his replacement, the band hired drummer Charlie Benante's nephew, Frank Bello, who has played on every Anthrax album since. Vocalist Neil Turbin had contributed song ideas, lyrics, titles and arrangements to the majority of songs on the debut album, i.e. "Metal Thrashing Mad", "Deathrider", "Panic", "Subjugator, "Death from Above", "Soldiers of Metal", "Anthrax", as well as Spreading the Disease songs "Armed and Dangerous", "Gung Ho" and "Raise Hell", but both Scott Ian and Charlie Benante, who played guitar in addition to drums, felt they needed tighter control on the songwriting.Due to a songwriting partnership between Ian and Benante, with Ian writing all the lyrics and Benante writing the music, Turbin was released from the band.Eddie Trunk admits in his book Eddie Trunk's Essential Hard Rock and Heavy Metal: "Early on, I told Johnny Z that what I didn't like about Anthrax was singer Neil Turbin's vocals."He admits in his writing to pressuring Johnny Zazula and Anthrax into firing Turbin from the band. The term "thrash metal" was used for the first time in the music press by UK's Kerrang! journalist Malcolm Dome, while making a reference to the song "Metal Thrashing Mad".Fistful of Metal was released as a double album by Music for Nations in the UK, featuring extra mixes of the tracks "Soldiers of Metal" and "Howling Furies", which were not included on the US edition. In 2000, Megaforce repackaged and re-release a compilation of Fistful of Metal and the 1985 Anthrax EP Armed and Dangerous which featured some liner notes, but excluded any new mixes and bonus tracks and features a different artwork instead of the controversial "Metal-wrapped fist" artwork.

Album:

On November 20, three decades after its October 30, 1985 debut, Universal will release a special 30th anniversary edition of ANTHRAX's classic "Spreading The Disease", the band's second studio album and the one that served as the then-budding thrash band's breakthrough, and still considered one of the best thrash-metal records ever recorded."We wanted to do something special for our fans to celebrate the anniversary of 'Spreading The Disease'," said ANTHRAX's Charlie Benante. "We took the idea to Universal a couple of years ago and have been very hands-on with them, creating this special, deluxe edition that we think our fans will really like."From the beginning, Benante has kept one of everything the band did — artwork, t-shirts, posters, and when the band was recording, he had the engineer run off a few tapes of the project's basic tracks, alternate takes and alternate mixes, just to stockpile until the time came that they would be needed. Consequently, in addition to the original album's nine tracks, the two-disc anniversary edition features previously unreleased bonus material including Joey Belladonna's 1984 demo recording of the song "Medusa", nine "rhythm tracks" from ANTHRAX recordings also done in 1984 — no vocals, no overdubs or "sweetening," just drums, some guitar, a bit of bass, showing the songs in their naked, most basic form — and eight live songs from ANTHRAX's 1987, first-ever concert in Japan, held at Tokyo's Sun Plaza. "'Spreading The Disease' was our first real record on a major label," said Benante. "We were on a roll with that album, and we wanted to perform those songs as close to the album versions as possible. I think the performances show the excitement of a young band that was on its way, so we wanted to have them on this reissue."Produced by ANTHRAX with Carl Canedy, the 44-minute "Spreading The Disease" marked the first ANTHRAX album to feature singer Belladonna and bassist Frank Bello (joining drummer Benante and guitarists Dan Spitz and Scott Ian), and set into motion the core elements that would become the essence of ANTHRAX. In addition, the album also introduced the ANTHRAX writing partnership of Benante and Ian (that eventually evolved into Benante, Ian and Bello). For Bello, "Spreading The Disease" was his full-on album recording baptism. Only 18 at the time, he hadn't yet fully realized his own style of playing, but over the course of the sessions, he developed it. "You can hear all of my influences on every song, Steve Harris, Geddy Lee, Geezer Butler, all of them." Bello remembers that "Spreading The Disease" didn't quite come of age until later on, but it was definitely "simmering." "What we were doing was so fresh, so different - we had heavy songs with these great, melodic vocals — and eventually, people caught on and loved what we were doing. I think every song on 'Spreading The Disease' still stands up today.""Spreading The Disease" represented a turning point in rock. It came during a time when the landscape was transitioning from the "hair band scene" to a new composite of metal, punk and hardcore — thrash metal. The album was compelling and utterly fresh to the 1985 music fan with its speedy rhythms, savage riffs, blistering solos, punishing drum work and a killer melodic performance by Belladonna. Unlike the thrash bands sprouting up on the west coast that focused on speed, ANTHRAX's focus was on catchiness, hooks, and a hot and sweaty, New York mosh sensibility. And it wasn't just the music that was morphing, it was a whole new culture that was being birthed. And ANTHRAX, along with METALLICA, SLAYER and MEGADETH, was right at its nucleus."Spreading The Disease" contains several ANTHRAX standouts: "A.I.R.", with its great riffs and abundance of melody, "Madhouse", a testament to the band's top-notch song-writing skills that showcased their grasp of melody, and "Armed And Dangerous", a soulful ballad with its singalong chorus and spine-tingling performance by Belladonna. "Aftershock" is probably the album's punkiest song with its blistering guitar solo, and the closer, "Gung-Ho", with its out-and-out speed-kills blitzkrieg, is a superb piece of thrash metal."We didn't know what we were doing, but we totally knew what we were doing," said Ian. "I know that doesn't make sense, but it's where we were at, a bunch of 21 year-old kids making our major label debut on a shoestring budget with nothing but a dream and a bunch of songs that we thought killed. We were right and our dream came true. Thank you to all the fans that put this record and ANTHRAX on the map way back when and still support us today. Cheers my friends!"

Belladonna returned to Anthrax for Worship Music, his first studio album with the band since 1990's Persistence of Time.

Album:

'Persistence of Time' was released is August 1990, two years after its predecessor 'State of Euphoria'. Entering the new decade, Anthrax surprised many of their fans and released their heaviest and darkest effort to date. Now where had a lot of humouristic traits of the band's music gone, many were asking. Well, people get older, and they learn more about this world. The band had got deeper into business and there was always tomorrow to think about. Time ticking away, tic-toc-tic-toc... So it was goodbye to sappy bermuda shorts, comic book shirts and Beavis & Butt-Head antics (well, that "Married With Children" scene did happen, though). Just look at that fine cover art...Okay, 'Persistence of Time' isn't most aggressive thrash metal (or generally, metal music) out there, but in 1990 this sounded HEAVY. And it still does. The lower end might not be of nowadays' standards, but still this is loud! Compact disc was a rather new thing back then, and vinyl always sounded heftier. The guitars are ripping, to say the least, the bass is pounding, and the drums are both ringing and devastating. The vocals are lightweight compared to everything else, but they fit in perfectly. However, the mix sounds very clear, finely bringing forth everything between trebly and bassy levels. What a fantastic production by the band with Mark Dodson (who also produced Suicidal Tendencies, Metal Church, Judas Priest and U.D.O. among others)! The production alone does not an album make. What we need are good songs! Music-wise, this album is one of the best sets of the songs from Anthrax. Anyway, by putting four longest songs at the beginning of the album (from 6 and a half minutes to over seven minutes in length) the band took a brave step. While maintaining sharp and thrashy sound, it's also more heavier and more oppressive. The tempos are more middle ground this time around. However, this way the band had more space to add more meat on the bones, from tiny details to major song-smithing. Surely there are some rather slow and simple, in Anthrax's terms, parts. This isn't pure thrash metal like the previous two albums, but more varying like 1985's 'Spreading the Disease' is. This is Anthrax putting in some hard-hitting heavy metal again, in their own, unique way.The rhythm guitarist Scott Ian does have fast, precise and heavy hand and has created his own style, but he's not overtly technically skilled otherwise. In a way, he reminds me of James Hetfield and Max Cavalera with his style: A bloody ace rhythm guitarist who does nail his bit without fucking around! The drummer Charlie Benante is a real powerhouse yet very much a detail-squeezer; very much with a unique style. These two fellas are the masterminds behind the band and the music, even though the songwriting credits go to the whole band. This is why Anthrax sound so distinct. Add to that formula the adept guitarist Dan Spitz, who is fast and clockwork-sharp, and adds melodiousness into this album that isn't particularly melodic guitar-wise.This takes us to Joey Belladonna, whose vocals are clean, light and melodic compared to other elements. He wields his part surprisigly well, when thinking about general murkiness. He was able to incorporate some angst, vehemence and spite (lyrics include topics about holocaust, racism, rough childhood and greedy leaders). His voice isn't overlapped like on newer albums from the band, but on a few occasions; he's backed by the band. Generally, I feel that some of the vocal lines could have been more massive, more epic, because now it feels a bit too simple. On 'Got the Time' he sounds very similar as the next Anthrax vocalist John Bush (of Armored Saint fame). Last but not least comes the bass player extraordinaire, Frank Bello with his clanking finger-played. He's fucking everywhere, even though isn't soloing but on that cover song. All-important, hard-workng piece of machinery. I play both drums and bass, and Charlie and Frank are some of the best artists, not just mere players, with their instruments I've ever heard. It's not merely about backing the guitars. So, this is still Anthrax from two previous albums, but heavier, darker and generally a bit slower. 'Keep It in the Family' starts as the slowest Anthrax stomper up to date, but even it picks up pace at some point. These longer song kind of build up a momentum, being like advancing tanks. Everything is in motion all the time.. Then again, 'Gridlock' begins basically with grinding. The band was on their way towards groove metal, and it can be heard here and there during these 60 minutes. Well, this packs more groove than actual groove metal albums often do, to tell the truth! There are no funny melodies or vibes, and melodiousness is at times missing ('Gridlock' being the clearest example, and also the only throw-away track); this also happens with Joey's vocals, as he was instructed to sound more angry or whatever, hence giving us less melodies. 'Belly of the Beast' contains some early Iron Maiden style riffing. Music-wise, 'Discharge' is the most related to earlier Anthrax. The Joe Jackson cover 'Got the Time... The band really made it their own, even though it's way punky than anything else here. The outcome, as a whole album, is a very organic-sounding thing packed with extremely explosive energy.Grunge and overtly polished thrash, or more like "thrash" metal, hadn't as yet hit the music world as hard as they would later. 'Persistence of Time' is a fine artifact of its turbulent time before the collapse that many a band, even Anthrax, fell victim to. This is thrash with seriousness, kind of Anthrax's '..And Justice for All', 'Twisted into Form' or 'Oppressing the Masses'. This would be one of my "desert island" albums!

Album:

ANTHRAX TO CELEBRATE THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF PERSISTENCE OF TIME WITH DELUXE CD and VINYL EDITIONS.Fully Re-Mastered with Refashioned Cover Art.Available exclusively on disc and vinyl, the CD package will include two CDs and one DVD, the vinyl edition offers four LPs, as well as revised cover art that reflects what had been the album’s original visual concept. The 40-minute “guerilla-style” DVD was shot when Anthrax was on tour with Iron Maiden in 1991 and features live footage of Benante taking over the drums for Iron Maiden’s Nick McBrain, as well as backstage and dressing room footage with members of both bands. The piece wraps with Benante, Bello, and Ian joining Iron Maiden on stage for the final song of the night, “Sanctuary.”

Belladonna returned to Anthrax for Worship Music, his first studio album with the band since 1990's Persistence of Time.

Album:

Recently Aftershock (The Island Years 1985-1990) was released, a 4 cd box containing the albums Spreading The Disease, Among The Living, State of Euphoria and Persistence of Time. The band made those albums in what was later called the classic line-up: singer Joey Belladonna, guitarists Scott Ian and Dan Spitz, bassist Frank Bello and drummer Charlie Benante. From the debut Fistful Of Metal (with singer Neil Turbin) and the later albums with singer John Bush (Armored Saint) no songs are included in the box. The band from New York was popular at the end of the eighties thanks to the tighter-than-a-belt-around-a-anorexia-model riffs of Scott Ian and drumming of Charlie Benante. While the vast majority of thrash bands came from the San Francisco area, Anthrax, along with Overkill, was one of the few bands from the east coast at the time. Although the band dressed neatly according to the prescribed dress code (leather, denim and studs) in their early days, they gradually switched to easy-fitting clothing such as shorts and tracksuits. The use of accessories such as caps and skateboards set the band apart visually from almost all other bands in the genre.Together with Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth, Anthrax is called The Big Four of thrash metal and under this banner the quartet has played to packed stadiums in Europe and the United States in recent years. In hindsight we may ask ourselves if this was right, because the second, third, fourth and fifth albums of Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth are actually better than Anthrax's. Sometimes bands like Machine Head or Testament are mentioned as the fourth 'big' band, but those bands started later. The first wave did include Exodus (Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett came from Exodus), so if any band can lay claim...Anyway, back to Anthrax. Of the four albums in the box, Spreading The Disease is by far the best. The opener A.I.R. is perhaps Anthrax's very best song. A great riff, a driving rhythm and a lot of aggression. The single Madhouse was a regular item on MTV's Headbangers Ball at the time and the fast Gung-Ho a great closing track that turned out to be a step up for the legendary Stormtroopers Of Death project (S.O.D. with Billy Milano). On Among The Living, the single I Am the Law especially stands out. Scott and Benante are huge comic fans and wrote a song about their favourite Judge Dredd (who has been filmed twice already with Sylvester Stallone and more recently with Karl Urban). The song has a chopping riff and catchy arrangement and is one of the highlights of the band's oeuvre. The band's oft-quoted humour made its appearance on this album with Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.) in which they sing lyrics backwards. Tighter than tight is One World. The band had expanded its interest to other genres and experimented with hip-hop as heard on I'm The Man. A song that brought the band a hit. On stage Anthrax was and remained a party, catapulting the band from clubs to huge venues. By the time of State of Euphoria Anthrax was an established band consolidating its status with strong compositions such as Now It's Dark and Be All End All and the Stephen King novel based Misery Loves Company. Curiously, most attention went to the cover Antisocial by the French Trust (the band where Iron Maiden picked their drummer in 1984). The song became a regular encore and fitted the lyrics of the socially involved New Yorkers perfectly. After another long tour, things started to go wrong and you can hear that on Persistence of Time. Anthrax never had the aggression of Slayer or Dark Angel, for instance, but on Persistence of Time many songs lack aggression and sound artificial or even bland. It is illustrative that the best song (Got The Time) is a cover of Joe Jackson.Three of the four albums in this box are provided with bonus tracks, which makes the box a collector's item for fans. People who own little or nothing of the band, get the most important albums for a cheap price. Not the best, because that remains The Sound Of White Noise.

Album:

Sound of White Noise is the sixth studio album by American thrash metal band Anthrax, released in May 1993 on Elektra Records. It is the band's first album to feature vocalist John Bush, who replaced longtime Anthrax vocalist Joey Belladonna in 1992. It is also Anthrax's last studio album with longtime lead guitarist Dan Spitz. This was also the second album Bush worked with producer Dave Jerden, as he also produced Symbol of Salvation for Bush's previous band, Armored Saint. The album, produced by the band and Dave Jerden, includes the singles "Only", "Room for One More", "Hy Pro Glo" and "Black Lodge". This album marked a significant revision in the band's sound, with the departure of lead vocalist Joey Belladonna and the introduction of grunge influences. Jerden was known for producing the likes of Alice in Chains and Jane's Addiction. With Sound of White Noise, Anthrax moved away from the rapid-fire thrash metal that had defined their earlier output, often emphasizing more melodic songwriting and abandoning the goofy humor. Songs like the walloping "Only" and stuttering, stop-start dynamics of "Hy Pro Glo" maintained a level of aggression on par with anything else the band recorded, but in a different alternative metal style. Other songs found Anthrax exploring new territory, like the mid-tempo "Room for One More," and the atmospheric "Black Lodge" (inspired by the Twin Peaks TV series and featuring keyboardist Angelo Badalamenti). Bush's lower-pitched, darker vocal style also was a drastic change from Belladona's tendency towards operatic falsetto. The album debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 charts,Anthrax's highest ever chart position. Sound of White Noise was certified gold by the RIAA."Only" and "Black Lodge" charted at No. 26 and No. 38 respectively on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.Dave Connolly reviewed the album on behalf of AllMusic and called it "surprisingly melodic" but "predictably pummeling" and the music "relentless." He commends the overall quality of the songs on the album before settling on "Only" as the best overall, but calls out several other tracks for praise as well.Canadian journalist Martin Popoff praised the performance of new singer John Bush and the production by Dave Jerden and defined the album's music "top-flight, state-of-the-art metal, fortified by the band's usual societal concerns, here elevated to eloquent outrage at man's crumbling morality."[6] Spin critic John Wiederhorn described the album as "a good typical heavy-metal record." Nevertheless, he also noted that the album "doesn't wander beyond the sound of its dark, moody intros and tuneful, galloping rhythms."Tom Sinclair of Rolling Stone described the album as "a powerful comeback from a group that never went away."Among the album's songs, "Only" has received particular attention; Metallica frontman James Hetfield is said to have referred to "Only" as a "perfect song."

Belladonna returned to Anthrax for Worship Music, his first studio album with the band since 1990's Persistence of Time.

Album:

Volume 8: The Threat Is Real is the eighth studio album by American thrash metal band Anthrax. The album was released on July 28, 1998 by Ignition Records and debuted at number 118 on the Billboard 200 chart. The record was produced by the band and Paul Crook. It features the song "Crush", which appeared in the video game ATV Offroad Fury for PlayStation 2 and in the game's soundtrack. Other released singles from the album were "Inside Out", "Piss N Vinegar" and "Born Again Idiot"."Pieces", the hidden track at the end of the album, was written by bassist Frank Bello as a tribute to his brother Anthony who was murdered outside his girlfriend's home in The Bronx on March 25th, 1996 by an assailant who has never been identified. The track features Bello on vocals.Stephen Thomas Erlewine, in a mixed review for AllMusic, wrote that the album is a continuation of the band's "writing slump" which started with 1993's Sound of White Noise. He said that there aren't many "memorable songs" on the record, and went to call it "transitional album" leading the band to "new, uncharted territory".Stephen Thompson of The A.V. Club found the album to be "aggressive to the point of being exhausting".Martin Popoff in his Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal remarks how the band put a bit of everything in the songs, including multiple speeds, "humor scattered here and there", "big grungy guitars", "meat and potatoes riffing and roaring vocals from Bush", while "experimenting with some different textures and dynamics". The result is not just "an accessible thrash metal record", as is typical with Anthrax. All lyrics written by John Bush and Scott Ian; all music by Charlie Benante, except where noted.

Album:

Anthems is the sixth EP by American thrash metal band Anthrax. It was released on March 19, 2013 through Megaforce Records in North America, and three days later in Europe by Nuclear Blast. This was the group's last release to feature lead guitarist Rob Caggiano, who left the band subsequently. The record features cover songs from some of the band's favorite acts of the 1970s, along with two versions of "Crawl", a song from their previous studio album, Worship Music. The EP was recorded during 2012 at various locations. Although it was initially scheduled to be released as part of a special edition of Worship Music, the record was released both separately and on a deluxe edition. It received favorable reviews by music critics and debuted at number 52 on the Billboard 200, selling approximately 8,500 copies in its first week of release. By April 10, 2013, Anthems had sold 14,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen Soundscan.Anthrax intended to release Anthems as a tribute to the bands that influenced them over the years. Vocalist Joey Belladonna explained: "These are all bands I grew up with and have listened to forever. It's just great music. I had fun singing these songs and I was happy recording together with Anthrax, doing classic rock songs."When asked how the band got the idea to do such a record, bassist Frank Bello answered: "The reason why that happened, if you ever came to an Anthrax sound check, you'd probably hear every other song but an Anthrax song." He further said that the band got the idea while jamming to some older songs. "We just wanted to say this is where we also came from. That gave us our start and that is what sparked us."The band started working on this project in the summer of 2012. The album was recorded in 2012 at different locations: at drummer Charlie Benante's home studio, in producer Jay Ruston's New York studio and during tour. Some of the tracks were recorded earlier, during the recording sessions of their previous studio release Worship Music.Benante, in an interview for Loudwire, stated: "To commemorate the first year of Worship Music being out, we're putting together a little companion EP with some fun shit on it." The original idea was to record a few songs that would have been placed on a deluxe edition of their previous album, but the band did not manage to finish the project in time. However, when the band had recorded enough songs, they contacted their US and European labels who offered to put out Anthems as a stand-alone EP, a proposal which the band accepted. In addition, Benante and artist Stephen Thompson have redesigned each track's original artwork to "Anthrax" it.

Belladonna returned to Anthrax for Worship Music, his first studio album with the band since 1990's Persistence of Time.

Album:

Worship Music is the tenth studio album by American thrash metal band Anthrax. The album was released on September 12, 2011 internationally, and on September 13 in the United States. It was the band's first album of original material since We've Come for You All (2003), the first full-length Anthrax album since 1990's Persistence of Time to feature vocalist Joey Belladonna, and the final album with guitarist Rob Caggiano prior to his departure in January 2013.Anthrax return after a long, tumultuous absence from the record bins with their new album ‘Worship Music,’ a stunningly cohesive re-assertion of their strength and precision. It’s been eight years since Anthrax’s last album, 2003’s ‘We’ve Come for You All,’ their fourth and final album with John Bush on vocals.Since then, the band reunited with golden-era lead singer Joey Belladonna for some touring. They then parted ways again, and recruited Dan Nelson to sing on an early version of ‘Worship Music.’Just when it looked like the record would finally come out, in 2009, Nelson was out, too, to be replaced on tour briefly by Bush and then finally on record by Belladonna. Got all that?OK, well, throw it all out, it’s ancient history now.Cause all that really matters is that this record absolutely smokes. The 20 years since Belladonna’s last record with Anthrax, 1990’s ‘Persistence of Time,’ doesn’t seem to have affected their natural chemistry one bit.Unlike the last two (and very very good) Bush-era records, which leaned slightly in a hard rock direction, ‘Worship Music’ finds Anthrax very solidly in thrash mode. The opening trio of ‘Earth on Hell,’ the absolutely undeniable ‘The Devil You Know’ (reviewed here) and ‘Fight ‘Em Till You Can’t’ are gonna cause a lot of hearing damage as the faithful give in to the urge to play them often and at ever increasing volume. But what really makes this album special is the two epics that follow – ‘I’m Alive’ and ‘In the End,’ which both demonstrate a very special, non-boring type of maturity and musical growth. It’s not that they’re ballads, by any means, but by taking the pedal off the gas just a little bit, and perhaps bringing the vocals forward in the mix a touch, Anthrax has hit on a powerful, ‘Sad but True’-type of groove that really shows off their songwriting skills. All that … and you’re just halfway through the album. There’s very little in the way of filler the rest of the way out, with the call and response of ‘The Giant’ and the B-movie monster stomp of ‘The Constant’ serving as our personal highlights.Really, Anthrax couldn’t have named this album any better. These songs are going to fit perfectly next to the band’s classics on their upcoming tour. Let’s just hope we don’t have to wait so long for the next one!

Album:

Get ready to mosh in the privacy of your own home, because multiple Grammy-nominated thrash masters ANTHRAX have announced the release of "Chile On Hell", a live-in-concert DVD that is due on September 16. "Chile On Hell" was filmed at the Teatro Caupolican in Santiago, Chile on May 10, 2013 and features ANTHRAX performing an extended set that featured songs from the band's entire catalogue."Chile On Hell" will be available on DVD and Blu-ray, was recorded in 5.1 Surround Sound, and will retail for $16.98."Santiago was the perfect place to film the show for this," said ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante. "When we'd played there in the past, we'd finish our set, play our encore and go back to the dressing room. But every time, the fans would continue to scream and cheer and clap. I mean, they went on and on, they wouldn't stop. One time Scott [Ian, guitar] and I walked out to the side of the stage just to watch what was going on in the audience, it was intense. Why wouldn't we want to film a DVD in front of an audience like that?"Plus," Benante continued, "the time was right to do this DVD… We wanted to finish on a high note. We didn't want to look back and regret that we didn't record the live show.""Chile On Hell" was produced by Jay Ruston and filmed by City Drive Entertainment Group and DC3 Global. The DVD's cover art was designed by Stephen Thompson, who partnered with Benante to "redesign" the artwork from last year's "Anthems" EP.SHADOWS FALL guitarist Jon Donais, who has been touring with ANTHRAX since Rob Caggiano's departure in January 2013, handled the lead-guitar parts at the Santiago show."Anthems", ANTHRAX's eight-track EP that pays tribute to the classic songs by some of the band's favorite acts from the 1970s, sold around 8,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 52 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD was released in North America on March 19, 2013 (MRI/Megaforce), and on March 22, 2013 in Europe (Nuclear Blast).ANTHRAX's latest full-length album, "Worship Music", sold 28,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at No. 12. The band's previous studio CD, 2003's "We've Come For You All", opened with just under 10,000 units to debut at No. 122.

Album:

For All Kings is the upcoming eleventh studio album by American thrash metal band Anthrax, set to be released on February 26, 2016.It will be the band's first studio album to feature Jon Donais on lead guitar, replacing Rob Caggiano. The album artwork was designed by Alex Ross.In January 2013, guitarist Rob Caggiano left Anthrax and was replaced by Jon Donais of Shadows Fall. Talk of a follow-up to Worship Music surfaced later that year, with bassist Frank Bello stating that the band was "getting the itch to write new music".In September of that year, guitarist Scott Ian confirmed that Bello and drummer Charlie Benante were "coming over to start writing for the next record" and subsequently posted images on Twitter of the band working on new material.By the end of October, the band had arranged seven new songs, with Scott describing the direction of the new music as "aggressive, fast, even riff-ier than the last record".By February 2014, the band had a total of 12 songs written, though were continuing to write so that they would have more material to choose from for inclusion on the final album.Recording began in late 2014 with producer Jay Ruston in a studio in Los Angeles. Some 15–20 more songs were written during the sessions. The band considered this to be its most productive period."Soror Irrumator", a song scheduled to appear on For All Kings, was featured on the second volume of the Catch the Throne mixtape.A lyric video for the song "Evil Twin" was released in October 2015, and several days later, the album title was announced. The album's release date and front cover were revealed the following month. The artwork, created by Alex Ross on a suggestion by drummer Charlie Benante, displays massive statues of the band members. The album's tracklisting was revealed on December 4.Despite earlier suggestion by the band,"Soror Irrumator" did not appear on the album's tracklisting.Explaining the album title, which is also the title of the album's third track, Scott Ian said "The meaning, to me, for this title is that everybody can be a king. Everybody can have control over their own lives, control over their destiny, just by growing up and becoming a responsible human being. I'm not necessarily saying that being a "king" is being the boss in your relationship, or any relationship for that matter. A king of yourself is what I mean. Taking responsibility and ownership for your own shit is basically what it means to me."According to Benante, "Evil Twin" was inspired by events like the 2015 attack on the offices and staff of the French satirical publication Charlie Hebdo and various other mass shootings. Scott Ian, who wrote the lyrics, added that it was about by the actions of people "who feel they have become judge, jury and executioner over their fellow man", calling this mindset the "evil twin" of humanity.

Album:

After publishing the review of the CD version a few days ago, the lovely people at Nuclear Blast sent us through a jen-yoo-wine DVD copy of the rapidly upcoming live Anthrax release Kings Among Scotland. To save repeating myself, hop back to that one to read about the song choice, music and sound quality. I’m going to focus on the video and bonus material here. The first point to make is that this is the whole gig. Like the CD, this isn’t (as is usual for these things) edited for length, I swear there’s not a second skipped on either release, which includes every profanity-laden bit of dialogue from Scott Ian and Joey Belladonna. Oh, and the crowd chant of “Here we fucking go” after “I Am The Law” (during which you can see a very ugly, sweaty man in a beard bouncing around in the crowd – which would be me). It’s impressive what the video crew have done with the Barrowlands venue. They definitely packed a load of cameras into the venue and there must be at least a dozen different viewpoints used throughout; a boom camera swoops over the audience, at least one is man-mounted on the stage, there’s one right at the back, a couple are clamped to Charlie Benante’s drums and so on. At times the switch from camera to camera is a little fast, something I noticed with the recent Slipknot DVD also. I guess I’m getting old and just as I’m enjoying a particular scene we’re whipped elsewhere, but given the pace of the music this frenetic movement is to be expected. It does make your own personal game of Where’s Wally more challenging, mind.Image quality is great, though a little washed-out occasionally due to the lights/smoke machines – nothing that can be helped and after the first song or two, you don’t really notice it. What you do notice is what a spectacular light show the band actually had that night, something I admit passed me by as I was too busy beating the shit out of a bunch of lovely fellow fans at the time. The actual stage set is pretty small, compared to the aforementioned Slipknot festival DVD or a Metallica release, but this is all about the music and the band, and seeing them thrash it out on the legendary Barrowlands stage… frankly bigger is not better in this instance. A venue big enough to hold a decent (sold out) crowd, but small enough to just about class as intimate. One of my pet peeves about live videos, where the sound and image don’t sync, is completely non-existent. The editors have done a great job and you can see each drum hit and strum of a guitar pick as the relevant noise erupts from your speakers. Great stuff. So the show’s good. We kind of expected that. So what of the extras? There are two on the disc (well, on a separate disc): On The Road (35 mins) and Anthrax Gear Documentary (25mins). The former details the band’s trip on the Among The Kings tour from London to Glasgow. The band detail the set they played with footage from several of the venues. The chapters include The Set Up, Life On The Road, On Tour Dangers (warning, here be blood), a tour round The Bus, a chance to meet Scott’s son, and A Metal Day Off. Honestly, for a little over half an hour, this is a great little insight into what goes into a tour. There’s no real glamour, nobody hams it up – it’s just an interesting documentary. The Gear Documentary is similarly filmed on the road and features the band taking you through their instruments and other kit. Scott and Charlie (or at least Charlie’s kit, mainly detailed by drum tech Francis) have the lion’s share of the footage and – even from the perspective of a non-muso like me – it’s interesting and fun to watch, even if it’s not something you might watch more than once.So there you have it. While most people these days will settle for the CD (or – shudder – just make do with streaming), those who pony up for the DVD are definitely getting their money’s worth. Actually, I’d pick the DVD in preference. It’s a shame there’s no combo-package with them both!

On July 18, 2021, thrash metal pioneers ANTHRAX celebrated their 40th anniversary. The anniversary celebrations began last May and culminated on July 16-17, when the band's live set, filmed at The Den studio in Los Angeles, was broadcast online. For over two hours ANTHRAX played hits and lesser-known tracks from various periods of their extensive discography. Now the complete recording of the performance, plus previously unreleased rehearsal footage and a "walking tour" of New York City with guitarist Scott Ian, showing the places that played a role in the emergence and history of ANTHRAX, will be released on Anthrax XL. In North America it will be released July 15 by Megaforce on Blu-ray, CD and digital. In Europe, Nuclear Blast will release the digital version on July 15, while Blu-ray will be available later in the year.
