Album:

Metal has its share of polarizing figures, and near the top of the list is Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine. His political and religious beliefs and controversial statements have made him a lightning rod. That has brought a lot of attention to Megadeth, who have been on a roll, releasing three excellent albums over the past few years. ‘Super Collider’ is their fourteenth album, released on their own imprint via Universal Music.‘Super Collider’ is a bit of a throwback, but not to classic Megadeth albums like ‘Peace Sells ... But Who’s Buying?’ or ‘Rust in Peace.’ It has more in common with 1999‘s ‘Risk’ and 2001‘s ‘The World Needs a Hero,’ which were not as well received. It’s more hard rock and less thrash metal. The album starts on a high note with ‘Kingmaker,’ the type of high-energy track you’d expect from Megadeth. That’s neutralized by the run-of-the-mill title track that follows, a hard rock song that’s pretty nondescript. You know you’re going to get great guitar work from Megadeth. Mustaine and Chris Broderick are two of the best in the business. There are some top-notch riffs on the track ‘Burn’ and throughout the album. The current lineup of Megadeth is one of their best. Dave Ellefson is a rock-solid bass player who provides good backing vocals, as well. Shawn Drover is an underrated drummer, and holds down the rhythmic fort with style. The most unexpected moment on the album is ‘The Blackest Crow.’ The twangy intro sounds like it is from a bluegrass album before the hard rock kicks in. Megadeth probably doesn’t want a whole album with fiddle on it, but it works well on this song. There is a guest appearance on the album. David Draiman from Device and Disturbed lends vocals to 'Dance in the Rain,’ which is just okay, and the far superior 'Forget To Remember.’ The proceedings wrap up with a cover of Thin Lizzy’s ‘Cold Sweat,’ one of the best tracks on the record. If you pick up 'Super Collider’ expecting classic thrashy Megadeth, you’ll be disappointed. It’s there, but only in small doses. This is mainly a hard rock album with some metal moments. Knowing that going in may help shift your expectations. There are a few excellent songs on ‘Super Collider,’ some that are decent, and a couple that can kindly be characterized as filler.

Album:

Countdown to Extinction: Live is a live album by American heavy metal band Megadeth, released on September 24, 2013, through Dave Mustaine's Tradecraft label in Blu-ray, DVD, and CD formats. It was recorded during the band's "Countdown to Extinction 20th Anniversary Tour" at a show at Fox Theatre in Pomona, California, on December 7, 2012,and features the band performing the entire Countdown to Extinction album. The album debuted at number 119 on the Billboard 200.Countdown to Extinction was released in 1992, and became the band's most successful record both on the charts (U.S. #2) and in sales numbers (2× platinum). The "20th anniversary tour" idea for this album follows on a similar tour in honor of the 20th anniversary of another Megadeth album, Rust in Peace (1990) and its associated live album.Fred Thomas of AllMusic commented that while the execution of the album was "surprisingly interesting", the production and feel of the original album were not present.Countdown to Extinction: Live sold about 3600 copies in the U.S. during its first week, enough to reach number 119 on the Billboard 200.

Album:

"Greatest Hits: Back To The Start" is loaded with 17 CD selections, and also boasts a 9 track bonus DVD featuring the video for "Kill the King", as well as a seven-song live set recorded at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, CO on December 27, 1999. Classic Megadeth is well represented here - most notably with the stomping, bass-heavy "Peace Sells" and the mini-epic "Hangar 18". This collection is an ideal introduction to the potent speed metal of Megadeth. The CD attempts to overview the golden era of the band’s career (the 80s and 90s) in a balanced manner. And, frankly, even with some great songs like "Tornado of Souls" missing, I still think this song selection represents the best of Megadeth well. Aside from obvious classics, I’m glad “Trust” is here to showcase the band’s more melodic songwriting, as well as lesser-known songs like “Train of Consequences”, "Kill the King”, and “Angry Again” where the band finds a middle ground between melody and technical appeal. Not only did I get a good overall picture of what Megadeth is all about, listening many times to this release made me want to explore more of Megadeth, and I did go on to eventually listen through their albums I have not yet heard at the time I got this.I also find the song order to be agreeable here. While it isn't chronological, the older & highly rated songs are generally lined up first, while more recent (and not-as-highly-rated) songs tend to be towards the back end of the order. I am in favor of such an approach because the CD grabs the listener's attention with the best of the best, and keeps the listening experience interesting with diversity. It also sounds cohesive, despite putting songs from different albums next to each other. For example, the first three tracks - “Holy Wars…”, “In My Darkest Hour”, and “Peace Sells” - all flow very well from one to another, thanks in part to their instantly recognizable riffs. Compared to the other Megadeth compilation releases, I think this one is the best in terms of number of songs included and the order in which they are presented.Nonetheless I can’t give this release a higher rating - I have the version that came with a DVD, and the DVD is god awful. Its main feature is the live performance from 1999, but the sound mix is inexplicably bastardized by sporadically cranking up Dave Mustaine’s solos to an obnoxious level where others are drowned out. To make matters worse, such mixing also exacerbates Dave’s sloppy performance on that particular night. Drowning out Marty Friedman’s solos is also a huge disrespect to Marty, who had a better performance than Dave in the film. Watching the band perform with Marty should have been a great pleasure, especially because this was one of his last performance before he left heavy metal for the world of J-pop, but the sound mix totally destroys the experience. I suppose the DVD also does a good job of representing what to expect from Megadeth (or, specifically, Dave Mustaine), in an ironic way.I will admit that the criticisms by others on this site (and elsewhere) do leave a very bad taste in my mouth. I had no idea for a long time that the songs on the CD were supposed to be chosen by fans’ votes (which would have been very cool). I do feel really bad for the faithfuls for having their wishes ignored and betrayed. I also agree that Megadeth has put out too many compilations with similar set of songs, and I definitely don’t like feeling like I spent my precious money on a cash-grab.But, my $10 is gone and will never come back, and at the end of the day, I don’t regret buying this. This release is good enough to satisfy my occasional and casual Megadeth fix. I’m genuinely happy with what I have.

Album:

MEGADETH's new song "Fatal Illusion" can be streamed below. Due as a digital single on October 16 via Universal Music Enterprises, the track is set to appear on the band's forthcoming fifteenth studio album, "Dystopia", which will be released on January 22, 2016. The follow-up to 2013's "Super Collider" was recorded earlier in the year in Nashville, Tennessee and was produced by MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine and Toby Wright (ALICE IN CHAINS, KORN). The CD was mixed by Josh Wilbur, who has previously worked with LAMB OF GOD, ALL THAT REMAINS and GOJIRA."Dystopia" will mark the recording debut of MEGADETH's new lineup, featuring founding members Mustaine (guitar, vocals) and David Ellefson (bass) alongside LAMB OF GOD drummer Chris Adler and Brazilian guitarist Kiko Loureiro, best known for his work with ANGRA.The band also recorded a cover version of "Melt The Ice Away" (BUDGIE).The song "Poisonous Shadows" features piano playing from Kiko as well as orchestration from famed Nashville arranger Ronn Huff, the father of former MEGADETH producer Dann Huff. Mustaine described the track to Rolling Stone as "a really haunting piece" and added that "the part that [Kiko] played is very Chopin-meets-MEGADETH, if that makes sense."Mustaine told Revolver magazine about MEGADETH's forthcoming CD: "There's a lot of riffing going on in there, that's for damn sure," he said. "There's a lot of solos, a lot of pounding drums and bass. I knew from the start that I wanted to go back to my roots, and I wanted to make a thrash record."Mustaine spoke to Rolling Stone about his mindset during the making of MEGADETH's new album. He said: "Over the years we've always said, 'We're going back to our roots.' But the naysayers, they just want 'Rust In Peace' 20 times, which is never gonna happen. Because I've never written the same song twice. Unlike a lot of other rock and metal bands that, you know, they rely on a set formula, I try and make the songs all different. The funny thing, though, was that when [MEGADETH bassist David] Ellefson was doing the bass tracks, I was telling him, 'This is the 'Tornado' ['Tornado Of Souls'] part,' 'This is the 'Bad Omen' part,' 'This is the 'Black Friday' part,' 'This is the 'Holy Wars' part.' Because a lot of the things were in that kind of vein. Now, is it going back in time? Hell, I don't know. But I like what I'm hearing."He also talked about MEGADETH's new lineup, which made its live debut in July at the Festival D'été De Québec (also known as by its acronym FEQ, or Quebec City Summer Festival in English), in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. He told Revolver: "When Chris and Shawn left, it saddened me a little because they didn't say goodbye," Mustaine said. "They were pissed, because they'd gotten word that people wanted the 'Rust In Peace' [lineup] reunion [with guitarist Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza]. And frankly, I didn't; I was happy with those two guys. So when they left, it was like, 'It isn't going to be easy to replace them!'"He continued: "We haven't found a permanent drummer yet, but finding Kiko was really a mind-blower. It was the first time since Marty Friedman joined the band that I was really intimidated as a player. He's such an amazing talent, and he's been coming in with all of these fresh ideas."Adler, who has previously said that MEGADETH was the band that made him want to start drumming to begin with, was involved during the songwriting process for the group's new album. "MEGADETH is MEGADETH," Mustaine told Revolver, "and the songs will kind of tell you where they go. But there were several times while we were tracking where Chris would say, 'I think these parts should go like this, because that's how my MEGADETH is.' I was like, 'Yeah, I like that 'my MEGADETH' stuff!'"

Bio:

Megadeth is an American thrash metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1983 by guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson, shortly after Mustaine's dismissal from Metallica. A pioneer of the American thrash metal scene, the band is credited as one of the genre's "big four" along with Anthrax, Metallica, and Slayer, who were responsible for thrash metal's development and popularization. Megadeth plays in a technical style often featuring fast rhythm sections and complex arrangements; themes of death, war, politics, and religion are prominent in the group's lyrics. In 1985, the group released its debut album through the independent label Combat Records. The album's moderate commercial success caught the attention of bigger labels, which led to the band signing with Capitol Records. The band's first major label album, Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?, was released in 1986 and was highly influential in the underground metal scene. Despite the album's prominence in thrash metal, frequent disputes between the band members and issues with substance abuse earned the band negative publicity during this period. After the lineup stabilized, Megadeth released a number of platinum-selling albums, including Rust in Peace (1990) and Countdown to Extinction (1992). These albums, along with touring worldwide, helped bring public recognition to Megadeth. The band temporarily disbanded in 2002 when Mustaine suffered an arm injury and re-established in 2004 without bassist Ellefson, who had taken legal action against Mustaine. Ellefson settled with Mustaine out of court and rejoined the group in 2010. Megadeth has hosted its own music festival, Gigantour, several times since mid-2005.As of 2014, Megadeth has sold 50 million records worldwide, with six of its fourteen studio albums certified platinum in the United States, and has received eleven Grammy nominations. The band's mascot, Vic Rattlehead, regularly appears on album artwork, and from 2010 in live shows. The group has experienced controversy over its musical approach and lyricism, including canceled concerts and bans of albums. MTV has refused to play two of the band's videos that the network considered to condone suicide.

Album:

MEGADETH's animated video for the new song "The Threat Is Real" can be seen below. The track was released last month as a 12-inch single as part of Record Store Day's annual Black Friday bonanza. The effort also includes the title cut and a cover of FEAR's "Foreign Policy", both of which are taken from MEGADETH's forthcoming fifteenth studio album, "Dystopia"."Dystopia" will be released on January 22, 2016. The follow-up to 2013's "Super Collider" was recorded earlier in the year in Nashville, Tennessee and was produced by MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. The CD was mixed by Josh Wilbur, who has previously worked with LAMB OF GOD, ALL THAT REMAINS and GOJIRA."Dystopia" marks the recording debut of MEGADETH's new lineup, featuring founding members Mustaine (guitar, vocals) and David Ellefson (bass) alongside LAMB OF GOD drummer Chris Adler and Brazilian guitarist Kiko Loureiro, best known for his work with ANGRA.The band also recorded a cover version of "Melt The Ice Away" (BUDGIE).The song "Poisonous Shadows" features piano playing from Kiko as well as orchestration from famed Nashville arranger Ronn Huff, the father of former MEGADETH producer Dann Huff. Mustaine described the track to Rolling Stone as "a really haunting piece" and added that "the part that [Kiko] played is very Chopin-meets-MEGADETH, if that makes sense."

Album:

Century Media and Legacy Recordings have announced the 2018 deluxe reissue of MEGADETH's classic debut album, "Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good!", due on June 8."Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good - The Final Kill" has been completely restored to Dave Mustaine's intended vision. Remixed by veteran metal mixer Mark Lewis (WHITECHAPEL) and remastered by Ted Jensen for an optimal listening experience, the 2018 version reveals unheard parts and performances throughout the record. This rare gem includes the full album along with seven live audio tracks from VHS tapes found in Dave Mustaine's own attic. In addition to the bonus live tracks, the 2018 reissue also features MEGADETH's 1984 three-track demo and the once-removed cover of Lee Hazlewood's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" that has been added back to the record with recut vocals intended to maintain the integrity of both the original song and MEGADETH's own snarling rendition. The package is further enhanced by a new album cover featuring a fully executed sculpture of the iconic skull that has been lost over the many years since the album's initial release. The packaging also includes classic flyers and band photos pulled from their archive of timeless metal moments from MEGADETH's storied 35-year history."The Final Kill" is the complete vision of Mustaine, who has contributed liner notes delving into the struggles during that time period as well as some of the surprising moments during the remixing sessions."I am just as much amazed at the music we made as I am at the pure fact that we survived it all," Mustaine said.

Album:

Thrash legends Megadeth are re-issuing two of their albums on 15th February 2019. Both “The world needs a hero” and “The system has failed” have been remastered by Ted Jensen (Guns N’Roses, Mastodon, Machine Head and Trivium) and will be available on vinyl, CD and digital formats – the first time in many years that these albums have been available on vinyl. As well as having been remastered, this reissue includes an extra track – “Coming home”. This was originally a bonus track on the Japanese release of the album – and until 2007 that was the only place to find it, but it was then included in the “Warchest” compilation. It’s certainly good to see it added to this reissue. Many fans will agree that the band lost their way in the late 90s as they seemed to be in search of a more commercial sound and moved away from their roots. “The world needs a hero” was released in 2001 and marked the start of the band moving back towards their thrash roots, so while it’s still not thrash and does still have a lot of that more commercial sound, this album marked the point where the band started to put things right. This is by no means a bad album, but equally it’s never likely to be described as one of the best Megadeth albums. There are some great tracks on here – “Return to hangar” and “Dread and the fugitive mind” being two of the best tracks here. Silent scorn is a fairly short instrumental track (under two minutes long) that’s well worth a listen. It’s not one of the best Megadeth albums but it’s still a good album and well worth checking out.The world needs a hero (2019 reissue) will be released on 15th February 2019.

It was reportedly planned to be a solo album but was released under the Megadeth name to fulfill his contract with Sanctuary records. Following “The world needs a hero” which started the return to a thrash sound, “The system has failed” saw Megadeth more or less back to their thrash roots. Right from the start, “Blackmail the universe” lets you know this is Megadeth doing what they do best – playing thrash metal. It’s a far better album than “The world has failed” in my opinion, and outside the US at least, the fans seemed to agree as this album outperformed it’s predecessor around the world.I do like this album – it’s heavier and more thrash oriented than the previous few albums and it’s back to being the Megadeth that fans love. Ok it’s not an album that would be regarded as one of the top 3 Megadeth albums, but it’s certainly top 10.A great album that’s well worth picking up.The system has failed (2019 reissue) will be released on 15th February 2019.

Album:

On March 22, MEGADETH will celebrate its 35th anniversary with the release of "Warheads On Foreheads", a 35-track career retrospective. The anthology spans the band's entire studio recording career, from its first album "Killing Is My Business…And Business Is Good" to its 2016 Grammy Award-winning release "Dystopia", and will be available as a 3-CD set, a 4-LP set and a digital edition via UMe Recordings. A limited-edition, four-LP set pressed on silver colored vinyl will be available exclusively through the band's online store, with deluxe bundles to be announced. Visit this location for details."Thirty-five years ago, I chose the name MEGADETH for my band and I see these songs as the most efficient weapons in the band's arsenal," says Dave Mustaine. "'Warheads On Foreheads' is a U.S. military term for targeting efficiency. It's all about using the right tool for the job and these tracks were created for maximum destruction (or stopping power, or something else!)."In 1984, Mustaine was determined to start a new band that would be heavier and faster than his peers. Mustaine's songwriting was rapidly maturing, and he set about combining the attitude and energy of punk, with the power and intricate riffing of metal, along with direct, sociopolitical lyrical content. With David Ellefson on bass and Gar Samuelson on drums, the band recorded its infamous three-song demo which quickly circulated through the underground tape-trading circuit and became an underground hit leading to a deal with Combat Records."Warheads On Foreheads" starts at that beginning with the early thrashers "Rattlehead" and "Mechanix" from the band's 1985 debut, "Killing Is My Business…And Business Is Good", an album that would lay down the blueprint and establish MEGADETH as forerunners of what would later be called thrash metal (and recently hailed by VH1 as the greatest thrash metal debut of all time).MEGADETH was quickly signed by Capitol Records and released its 1986 major label debut "Peace Sells…But Who's Buying?", which became the band's first certified gold record and would go on to become MEGADETH's first platinum-selling release. Featured on "Warheads On Foreheads" are "The Conjuring" and the track "Good Mourning/Black Friday", which Pitchfork describes as "everything great about hardcore, plus a dose of the kind of show-off skill that makes lesser musicians' fingers bleed." Other songs included are "In My Darkest Hour" from its platinum-selling "So Far, So Good, So What!" (1988), "Hangar 18" and "Holy Wars…The Punishment Due" from its Grammy-nominated platinum album "Rust In Peace" (1990), and "Symphony Of Destruction" and "Sweating Bullets" from 1992's Grammy-nominated double-platinum release "Countdown To Extinction". Also featured are "A Tout Le Monde" and "Reckoning Day" from 1994's platinum-selling release "Youthanasia", "Kingmaker" from 2013's Top Ten release "Super Collider", which hit No 3 on both the Hard Rock Albums and Top Rock Albums charts, "She-Wolf" from the Grammy-nominated Top Ten release "Cryptic Writings" (1997) and the title track from the band's most recent album "Dystopia".Upon its release in 2016, "Dystopia" reasserted MEGADETH's place at the top of the metal world, equaling the chart impact of their early-nineties output, earning the band its first Grammy, as well as rave reviews (The Guardian gave it five out of five stars and stated "'Dystopia' is an absolutely blistering return to the state-of-the-art bombast and refined technicality.") MEGADETH burst onto the scene thirty-five years ago, virtually inventing a genre and selling more than 38 million albums worldwide, earning numerous accolades including a 2017 Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance" for the title track "Dystopia", 12 Grammy nominations, and scoring five consecutive platinum albums. With sheer determination and a relentless recording and touring schedule, MEGADETH worked its way up from headlining clubs to headlining arenas, festival and stadiums, cementing a legacy that continues to grow and spread throughout the world.

Album:

Megadeth’s explosive new album featuring twelve new songs from the titans of thrash metal! Produced by Dave Mustaine and Chris Rakestraw, the follow-up to the critically acclaimed, Grammy® award winning album Dystopia will melt Megadeth fans’ minds worldwide with songs like “We’ll Be Back,” the new radio hit “Killing Time” and “Night Stalkers” - the latter of which features icon Ice T.Whether you want it to or not, once a nickname is acquired, it sticks. Sometimes for life. For almost as long as the band has existed itself, Californian speed metal legends Megadeth have been known by fans as Megadave. A purely affectionate nickname for sure, but one which grew out of frontman Dave Mustaine‘s often brutal and cold-blooded approach to personnel management. The singular constant in a revolving door of band members, make no mistake. Mustaine is Megadeth. Always was, always will be.For a while during the nineties, Megadeth actually operated as a fully functioning band. Four musicians of the highest calibre working off each other brilliantly, sparking ideas and creating some of the band’s finest work. Those days of parity might be long gone but the fire which drove the band still remains in the shape of its flame-haired founder. A fire still clearly evident during the making of sixteenth studio album, The Sick, The Dying… and the Dead (Tradecraft/Universal) when after revealing a little too much of himself on Twitter, Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson was the recipient of yet another firm and decisive swing of the Dave-hammer and quickly became former Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson. So, with bass duties passed temporarily to Testament‘s Steve DiGiorgio (former member James Lomenzo having already rejoined), Mustaine is joined this time by former Soilwork drummer Dirk Verbeuren and guitarist Kiko Loureiro, the Brazilian six stringer returning for his second album, his seven years of service making him Mustaine’s current longest serving member. After the almost Monty Python style “bring out your dead” prelude and an intro similar to AC/DC‘s ‘Hells Bells’, the multifaceted title track eventually takes off but lacks the devastating punch of a classic Megadeth opener. Things change quickly though, and that punch appears on instant cobweb-remover ‘Life in Hell’ and the fast, aggressive stab of Ice-T (Body Count) assisted ‘Night Stalkers’.The Black Sabbath style apocalyptic warning of ‘Dogs of Chernobyl’ stands as one of the strongest songs on the record but things stall a little with the wobbly vocals of ‘Sacrifice’ and the appropriately toothless ‘Junkie’. Partly spoken interlude ‘Psychopathy’ leads into the lyrically acidic ‘Killing Time’ while the militaristic ‘Soldier On!’ and biting ‘Célebutante’ are two more genuine highlights. ‘Mission to Mars’ features a heavy Saxon vibe and a ‘Rust in Peace’ dad joke before the album climaxes with the ‘Black Friday’-isms of the fantastic ‘We’ll Be Back’.Although there’s no question that The Sick, The Dying… and The Dead! often packs a serious punch, it’s also quite an uneven record. While some songs attack with refreshing savagery, others are delivered with seemingly little conviction. The melodies are strong, the riffs are satisfyingly solid and the solos are enough to strip the enamel from your teeth but the lyrics often fall painfully short and while Mustaine’s trademark sneer is still present, it’s delivered with little of his usually dependable bitter sarcasm.
