Bio:

Angel Dust (originally Angeldust) was a German heavy metal band. Initially active from 1984 to 1990 as speed and thrash metal band, they dropped their thrash roots in favor of a power/progressive metal sound upon reforming in 1998.Angel Dust formed in Dortmund, Germany in 1984 as a typical garage band. They took their name from a song title off English black metal band Venom's debut album Welcome To Hell. The band's musical style was initially heavily influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and Bay Area thrash metal scenes. They soon found their niche in the speed and thrash metal styles, which were widely popular at the time. The band released their debut studio album, Into the Dark Past, in 1986, and followed it up with To Dust You Will Decay, released in 1988. The band broke up in 1990 due to internal conflicts.Although all members had gone their separate ways, founding member Frank Banx had no desire to let the Angel Dust name die. In 1998, Banx, and original drummer Dirk Assmuth, gathered a completely new lineup (including Frank Banx' younger brother Steven Banx on keyboards) to start from scratch. This reincarnation would handle music differently, shifting dramatically towards progressive metal, and would consequently gain a solid reputation in Europe. After releasing a few successful albums in the late 1990s and early 2000s, a series of line-up changes significantly reduced the band's activities. However, Angel Dust are still active, and have "enter[ed] the studio [in March of 2006] to record the long awaited successor from Of Human Bondage."The band's first two albums are now rare metal collectibles. They were reissued unofficially in very limited quantities in late 2002-2003, with no label or copyright info and with two bonus tracks each.

Album:

You might have missed the eighties for whatever reason? No Remorse Records can help you since the label provides you with some metal stuff out of this great period. The newst re-releases of the label are the first two longplayers of German speed metal band Angel Dust. It have been the days of the first German speed/thrash wave when bands like Kreator, Sodom, Paradox, Deathrow and Helloween started their career. Some lasted longer and some less long. Next to the mentioned band also Dortmund, Germany-based Angel Dust belongs to this generation.Maybe you are familiar with the newer releases of the band, like the excellent "Bleed" album. Nowadays the sound of the quintet is more power metal with a certain progressive touch, but the early days, before the hiatus, have been wild and rough. The first two album, "Into the Dark Past" and "To Dust You Will Decay", are classics of German speed metal with some thrash attacks."Into the Dark Past" was the debut and the guys played hard and fast. The big benefit of this longplayer is the unleashed wildness that you can find back in each of the songs. Angel Dust shows already at this early stage some more complexity in their songwriting, but in the end it's a record that doesn't take prisoners. While listening to "Into the Dark Past" again I wonder, why it hasn't got more attention in the eighties. Maybe there have been too many releases with the same kind of music in this time, maybe there have been other reasons. However, great that No Remorse reissues this classic of German thrash metal and finally you get this great longplayer for a fair price. Good stuff.

Album:

Two years after the debut it was "To Dust You Will Decay" that marked the next step for Angel Dust. The second strike of the Dortmund based four-piece brought the band's sound to a next level.Angel Dust added a new singer to their line-up. S.L. Coe took over the vocal duties which made the sound far more flexible and opend new opportunities. "To Dust You Will Decay" featured still some uncompromising thrash assaults. "Into the Dark Past II", the title track and fast "The Duell" are pure metal. But those songs also show some more complex structures that become more progressive in tunes like "Mr. Inferno". At this stage Angel Dust has some parallels with Blind Guardian, something that shows the potential the band had at this stage. But the album featured with "Stranger" also one of the most melodic songs with a pretty catchy chorus."To Dust You Will Decay" got some very positive reactions even though it wasn't commercially successful. In one or another way it was the beginning of the end. Some internal frictions started at that time. Things got more intense during the following tour and it was in 1989 when Angel Dust disbanded. It took almost 10 years till the band reunited in a slightly different line-up, but that's another story. So far, when it comes to "To Dust You Will Decay", another eight points for Angel Dust and some thanks to No Remorse for making these pearls available again.

High Roller Records, slipcase, poster, mastered by Patrick W. Engel at Temple of Disharmony, 6 bonus tracks.High Roller Records, transparent ultra clear/ bone splatter vinyl, ltd 150, 425gsm heavy cardboard cover, lyric sheet, A4 info sheet, poster, fully restored original artwork, mastered for vinyl by Patrick W. Engel at Temple of Disharmony, Cutting by SST Germany on Neumann machines for optimal quality on all levels... The ultimate audiophile edition of this German Speed Metal classic.Often considered by other people here to be one of the best speed/thrash metal album from the 80s German scene, I have to agree on that one, for this time. Angel Dust wasn't what it is today at all, to say the least. The band had its best moments right in the 80s, when the genre was at its peak of popularity, but unfortunately, they didn't survive mainly due to the high competition. However, it didn't mean that this album doesn't belong among the best ever recorded in the genre. Angel Dust were not an evil and satanic band at their debut compared to other acts, they were also great musicians at first while having this aggressive mood to create powerful music. In term of quality of the music, I would easily put them at the same level of Iron Angel, early Blind Guardian or Helloween. As you may know, they never got the attention that those other bands had at the time, which proves even more that popularity doesn't really include all quality stuff. They released the demo "Marching for Revenge" in 1985 which got them a deal with Disaster, this label had awesome bands, but all known in the underground scene only. I am pretty sure that the promotion and distribution wasn't that good too, well all things that are supposed to help a band growing. The first full-length "Into the Dark Past" was released one year later in 1986 and just by looking at the cover art of this album, you know that it will be some serious shit right there! Content-wise, the album is filled of great fast-paced riffs, crushing drums and intense vocals. Featuring eight tracks, in which the self-titled one is the introduction, we have a total running time of 39 minutes mostly consisting of speed metal with some thrash elements. I have to say that the introduction of this record is pretty cool, it sets you a bit in the mood because it makes the following track "I'll Come Back" to start off as a total blast of guitar riffs. Without an exception, every songs on this album is killer, catchy and memorable in its own way.The musical skills and good song writing is easily noticeable, each tracks is over four minutes and has a great variety of riffs and structures. Of course, the best example in this case is the famous track "Gambler", which is over seven minutes of length and shows the talent and passion that those guys had at the time. We also can see the presence of great heavy parts in tracks like "Victims of Madness" and "Marching for Revenge". To me, the most brutal songs are definitely "Legions of Destruction" and "Fighter's Return", those tracks are the true essence of German speed metal, and I think rightfully so. To be quite honest, it's hard for me to say something negative about this release, in part because there are none, as far as I am concerned.Well, the only thing I may say against "Into the Dark Past" is that some songs are very repetitive, which explain a bit why some tracks are so long. However, it doesn't bother me that much so I guess it explains my rate of 98% on this review. The production work is also very well done, the sound is clear, but definitely has that 80s original mood. The instruments are perfectly balanced in the mix, even the bass is audible, which is a pretty damn cool thing for such an album. After re-visiting this piece of the 80s German scene, I am still not surprised about why I listened to it that many times in the past years, the choruses of those songs are easily getting stuck in my head for a quite a long time... The only sad thing is that the first front man of Angel Dust "Romme Keymer" left the band after this album, he unfortunately never did vocals for any project beyond that, but his guitar in the other speed metal band "Risk" is pretty good too.Overall, this is an absolute of the speed, thrash metal genre. Every fan should give a listen to this record, I don't even know how you could not like it. Even their 1988 second release "To Dust You Will Decay" is good, so you don't want to miss these guys. This is an essential album and highly recommendable.
