Album:
Sweden’s Warfect began their career as Incoma back in 2003, under which moniker they released two demos, before changing their name in 2008. Scavengers is their third collective, full-length effort, and it’s one that sees the band finally commanding a fine grasp upon the more-extreme, blackened sound they carved out for themselves on their previous effort, Exoneration Denied (2013).Scavengers sees Warfect sounding the most comfortable they ever have, throughout their roughly decade-long career. Although the blackened element remains, this is hardly as “extreme” an album as their sophomore effort, and it’s one which sees the band bringing back a lot more of the speed and aggression inherent of the thrash genre, amid the layering of darker tones. “Skin Bound”, for example, sees Warfect merging the ominous tones of latter-day Satyricon with the thundering stomp of Pantera’s “Domination” and Slayer’s “Seasons In The Abyss”, which mood is carried over onto the next track, “Evil Inn”.While Scavengers’ sound remains built around a solid collection of pilfered Slayer riffs, there’s plenty of Dimmu Borgir and Naglfar-esque flourishes throughout the record, which lend a touch more texture and excitement to the record than most similar, Slayer-dredging efforts.1 Throw in the record’s engrossing, rich production—handled by band leader Fredrik Wester—which really allows each of the tracks to properly hammer away at the listener, and there’s no denying that Warfect have a winner on their hands. For all it’s inherent sonic quality, however, something must be said about Scavengers’ lacklustre presentation. The record’s cover may have come courtesy of Andrei Bouzikov, who’s done awesome work for the likes of Municipal Waste, Toxic Holocaust, Cannabis Corpse and Skeleton Witch, but Scavengers’ cover honestly looks half-finished and bears a lot more in common with a teenager’s high-school doodlings than the work of a fully-fledged professional artist. Combine that with the pale color scheme and single gradient filled-logo and you’ve got a product that doesn’t exactly scream quality to the prospective buyer, which is a shame because Scavengers deserves at least a cursory listen from anyone interested in all things either thrash or blackened. All in all, Scavengers is an impressive effort that showcases the sound of a band finally finding their footing. Hopefully, now that they seem to have a grasp on things, we can look forward to even more impressive endeavors from Warfect in future, and if Scavengers turns out to be the highlight of their career, then that’s not too shabby a result either—many bands have done much, much worse.
