Bio:

Destruction is a German thrash metal band. They are considered one of the "The Big Four" of the German thrash metal scene, the others being Kreator, Sodom and Tankard. Three of those four (Tankard being the exception) are often credited with helping pioneer black metal, by containing several elements of what was to become the genre. Destruction was originally named Knight of Demon, but changed their name in 1984. For most of the 1990s, Destruction was not signed to a record label and was forced to self-produce their albums until they signed a contract with Nuclear Blast in the 2000s.Inspired by Iron Maiden, Mercyful Fate, Motörhead and Venom, Destruction were formed as Knight of Demon in 1982. The original line-up featured vocalist and bassist Marcel "Schmier" Schirmer, drummer Tommy Sandmann, and guitarist Mike Sifringer. They soon changed their name to Destruction and released a demo titled Bestial Invasion of Hell in 1984. After this the group signed with Steamhammer Records and released an EP titled Sentence of Death later that year.Destruction released their first full-length album titled Infernal Overkill in 1985, followed by Eternal Devastation in 1986. The trio then added a second guitarist, Harry Wilkens, and released the EP Mad Butcher in 1987, followed by the full-length album Release from Agony (also released in 1987), then a live recording Live Without Sense in 1989, and Cracked Brain in 1990. In 1989, Schmier left the band and Mike Sifringer continued to release albums under the moniker of "Neo-Destruction".In 1999, Schmier rejoined, and things began to look up for the band as they signed a record deal with Nuclear Blast. They then released three more albums: All Hell Breaks Loose in 2000, The Antichrist in 2001, and Metal Discharge in 2003. The band would then sign with AFM Records and release Inventor of Evil in 2005. That album was followed two years later by the compilation of re-recorded songs Thrash Anthems (2007), and then a year later by D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N. (2008). In February 2011, Destruction released Day of Reckoning.A European tour with Overkill was scheduled for March 2011. Headlining dates in South America and North America were being planned for April and May.The band's thirteenth studio album, Spiritual Genocide, was released in November 23, 2012. Their next album, Under Attack, will be released on May 13, 2016.

Album:

Thrash legends DESTRUCTION were veritably reborn in the early 2000s, yet 2005's "Inventor of Evil" made people care about them again. Since then, DESTRUCTION hasn't so much as turned to behold the decimation left in their vapor trails. They just keep rolling. Fortunately for DESTRUCTION, nobody thinks much about their oddball numbers "Cracked Brain", "The Least Successful Cannonball" and the "Destruction" and "Them Not Me" EPs except to groan in reflection before limbering up their neck muscles for anticipatory headbanging. Thus we'll leave Schmier's inexplicable brief ejection in 1989 and the band's temporary downfall as anomalies. For their 30th anniversary, DESTRUCTION celebrates with a vengeance on "Spiritual Genocide", one of the fiercest and rhythmic albums they've ever laid down. Considering their last album, "Day of Reckoning", still feels like yesterday, "Spiritual Genocide" could've gone down in flames as a rush job. However, a large reason for "Spiritual Genocide"'s relentless popping pistons is the addition of new drummer Wawryzyniec "Vaaver" Dramowicz. Vaaver's metrical feels for thrash and groove turns good material into nearly-spectacular. He's the Godzilla of double hammer on the title track and "Under Violent Sledge". Thus "Spiritual Genocide" is a cleaver-swinging party for not only The Mad Butcher, but for Schmier and Mike Sirfinger, who might've only released a staple album without this hefty upgrade behind their backs."Cyanide" nearly over-exerts itself in its SLAYER-esque agitation, while "City of Doom" unmistakably sounds like "Rust in Peace"-era MEGADETH. Otherwise, the remainder of this album is pure Teutonic carnage as DESTRUCTION's fans have come to depend upon them to deliver. Mike Sirfinger's shredding acumen is understated throughout this album, but his bridges and dizzying solo segment on "City of Doom" are melted-down happy pills. Then Sirfinger's note-crazed solos on the title track serve as reminder he's as good as anyone on speedy six string."Spiritual Genocide", "Renegades", "No Signs of Repentance", "Riot Squad" and "Under Violent Sledge" wallop at nearly every turn and the pace is pressed with scant time to breathe. Only on "Carnivore" and "To Dust You Will Decay" does DESTRUCTION bother to slow down. Still, there are sorties of swiftness blasting throughout "Dust", while the mid-tempo smack of "Carnivore" allots for a gnarly solo sequence that projects nearly as loud as Schmier's housewarmed shrieks and ralphs."Legacy of the Past" may come off like a creeper, but it quickly asserts itself into higher gear and in true spirit of its namesake, it rings of the "Release From Agony" and "Eternal Devastation" days. We can assume it was even recorded in analog and touched up digitally in spots since it carries down-tuned whispers behind the projection to give it an old-school feel. To kick up the fun factor, Tom Angelripper of SODOM, Andreas "Gerre" Geremia from TANKARD and Ol Drake from EVILE join in the frivolity. All this cut needed for a proper alumni kick was Mille Petrozza of KREATOR sidling up to the Butcher's cutting board. Nevertheless, "Legacy of the Past" is almost as fun as the all-star packed "The Alliance of Hellhoundz" from "Inventor of Evil".The initial press reaction to "Spiritual Genocide" has been mixed and those are just the spoiled times we're living in. So much has been recorded in metal at this point, a reliably heavy band such as DESTRUCTION is held accountable for the minutest imperfections or potential squanders. Contrary to some opinions, this album hardly squanders. Had "Spiritual Genocide" followed "Release From Agony" or "The Mad Butcher" EP, it would've been held in immediate regard. The fact an album this meaty, defined and brutal is subject to scrutiny seems pretty goddamned weird.

Album:

Under Attack is the upcoming fourteenth studio album by the German thrash metal band Destruction, due to be released on May 13, 2016.Hailing from Germany, member of the Teutonic 4 of Thrash Metal, DESTRUCTION is a legendary band within the sub-genre… and they show us why, once again, in this masterpiece of a release! Pure Thrash from start to finish: phenomenal riff transitions, gritty/rasp thrash vocals from Schmier like we love them, intelligent and engaged lyrics, relentless/technical drum work are signs of a true modern classic! Let's dig in, shall we?The album starts off with the aptly-named title song (and first video clip) “Under Attack”; some almost mystical clean guitar riffs then transition into devastatingly awesome riffs. This song is a bit longer than most and gives us a glimpse of all the energy/efforts put into the remaining of the album! It also has one of the better choruses of the album for sure. “Generation Nevermore” starts off a bit slow, but quickly catch on and the very fast chorus is very interesting sounding and quite original I might say. The solo is quite twisted and fucked up (in a good way) with some “holy shit” tapping and some Egyptian (?!) influences. “Dethroned” have some strong Phantom Antichrist vibes from KREATOR… and that's not a bad thing at all! The slower chorus accompanied with the harsh and rather high pitched vocals are very reminiscent of Milles vocals. Worthy of a true thrash anthem. “Getting Used to the Evil” has a mystical clean intro sound again, but more creepy (in a good way again). The raspy vocals then kicks in and they are a “true sight to behold” (figuratively speaking) switching between low and high pitched. The intro's weird/twisted but awesome clean riffing keeps popping in during the verses/finale; the song overall is a very different, progressive, slower and melodic kind of thrash, which is awe-inspiring, really. The balance between melody/perplexity/aggression is perfect and it's one of the better song, no doubt about it! “Pathogenic” however is pure aggression, speed and relentlessness to it's thrash apogee. Extremely catchy verses and chorus; you will be singing this one long after it's done! The riffing is quite fast in “Elegant Pigs” too, but the vocals in this particular chorus however switch to a very low-pitched and harsh singing like if it was meant to reflect the lyrics and the elegant pigs themselves… very interesting approach. “Second to None” is the first single of the release and an extremely well done anti-bullying song that doesn't sound cheesy at all… and puts internet haters and trolls in the open and to real shame! The inspiring chorus and the epic solo are particularly noteworthy here. I like my metal with good values and this is a great way to expose and condemn bullies! “Stand Up for What You Deliver” is also very inspiring, giving you advice like “being proud of your own mind”. The riffs are deliciously chunky and jerked… the solo however will blow your mind with it's twisted-ness! The “holy shit” factor is strong here. “Conductor of the Void” is the other very complicated and progressive song, with very technical and original riffing and feature my favorite chorus of the album, which is saying a lot, since every choruses are pretty much all gold. The feeling of danger is omnipresent here. The album closes with “Stigmatized” which has a real sense of urgency to it and shows you that it won't stop the relentlessness until it's last seconds. It also features another highlighted bass riff from Schmier. The production overall is very well done and all the instruments sounds extremely crisp most of the time with very technical drum rhythms. I have practically nothing bad to say about this album; even if you don't like Thrash at all and you think it all sounds the same, the overall quality, technicality and originality of this release might make you want to reconsider the sub-genre altogether!

Album:

Ten years after having shipped “Thrash Anthems” to the record stores it’s German powerhouse Destruction that releases with 'part 2' another chapter of highly successful German metal music. “Thrash Anthems II” was originally meant to be a PledgeMusic campaign only. But after having been overwhelmed by support and requests, the band decided to publish an alternative version via Nuclear Blast, which will be released on November 11th.As with the first compilation also part 2 re-activates Destruction highlights from the 80’s, a tracklist that has been chosen by band and fans. Also this time Schmier, Mike and Vaaver decided to go for a re-recording of milestoness such as “United by Hatred”, Black Mass” and “Black Death”, the latter even with a more proper ‘th’ than on "Infernal Overkill". Each of these trackss shines in new splendor, showing the quality of songs that come from a time when metal rapidly gained momentum. There is, without any doubt, a lot of joy connected by listening to the original versions and those are of course still available. But it’s also a great experience to listen to these oldschool smashers that have been refreshed without losing the aggressive 80’s vibe and edges.“Thrash Anthems II” is what it is, a compilation of metal classics of one of the spearheads of German thrash metal. And who would have thought in 1982, the year of foundation, that Destruction is still around 35 years later? Probably not even the band themselves. True legends with real anthems.

Album:

Teutonic thrash legends, Destruction are set to release their 17th slab of molten metal called Born To Perish on August 9th via Nuclear Blast. For 35 years this band has carried the standard of thrash metal with honor and pride. The core member of Schmier (vocals/bass) and Mike Sifringer (guitar) remain. Injecting new blood and excitement into Destruction is the addition of drummer Randy Black and guitarist Damir Eskic. The big question is how does Born To Perish stack up to the band’s mighty catalog and the resurgence of thrash in general.Metal music and thrash, in particular, are the perfect vehicle for examining the failings of the world we live in. Born To Perish explores greed, persecution, and our own inhumanity toward each other with speed and power. The anguish and anger are invoked musically through vicious riffing on songs such as “Rotten” and “We Breed Evil”.The standout element on Born To Perish is the performances of the band. Schmier’s coarse vocals shift into a gravely hateful rasp through this album lending its menace. The scalpel-sharp riffs of Mike and Damir slash furiously on “Inspired by Death” and “Tyrants of the Netherworld”. The lead licks on “Betrayal” capture the evil hostility within the song. Driving each song is the pummeling drums of Randy Black. His playing is perfect and the drum sound on this album is punchy and percussive without the usual “click-clack” kick drum.Overall Born to Perish is a fine addition to Destruction’s arsenal of music. However, it isn’t without a couple of faults. Some of the song-writing is repetitive and don’t hold interest such as “Filthy Wealth” and “Ratcatcher”. They feel like filler and take away from the other stronger material on this album.Born To Perish by Destruction is a solid thrash metal album from one of the progenitors of genre. The band’s performance is top of the line with excellent percussion and biting riffs. There are a couple of songs which feel a bit out of place, but overall this album hits hard. In a world of insanity, we can always use a fierce fist to the face from Destruction to awaken our senses.

Line Up:

Album:

Better than live sounding Destruction with the last release featuring Mike Sifringer on main guitar. Mike left or was reported disconnected from Destruction this year. So I bought this release capturing him on the guitar department. It would've been nice had he stayed with the band since they'd become a 4-piece once again. But oh well. This release features a lot of the classics from early Destruction to 'Release From Agony' and 'Cracked Brain'. Most of the songs are from the 80's and early 90's there weren't many modern ones maybe 3-4. I guess since they may have felt that since touring has been a no-go since Covid-19 they'd play the classics.I really enjoyed 'Live Without Sense' also, maybe even more than this live album. And I favor Harry over Damir though I have the utmost respect for both guitarists. These guys formed in '82 or '83 and remained together up until recently that two of the founding members they've had till Mike's departure. This album features some of the classic songs such as "Mad Butcher" and "Bestial Invasion" to name a couple. Like Schmier said they've covered a lot of history with this live show. To longtime fans they are of no surprise but yes, this album newer listeners get to hear the classics which they've only changed up a little bit on the guitars, but not much.Schmier sounds pretty much the same as he always have though his voice is a little bit deeper than featuring past stuff. His work with Panzer (first two releases) has him sounding like this live release. And both new musicians Randy on drums and Damir on lead guitar perform solos showing their strength on each instrument. Olly (ex-Destruction) still favors the band and Harry (ex-Destruction) also is featured on many lead guitar appearances on their more current releases. Olly is in mainly a support but Harry was guest up until recently. Damir has filled that slot but I don't know who's taking Mike's place, I don't even think the band knows. You can get this on the digital Spotify streaming release or buy the CD on 3 discs 2 Live Attack CD's and one Blue-ray all in one case. I bought the physical copy to support the band. And because I support bands that allow you to get their physical CD's. This one was too good to pass up. I think the production quality was good and the guitars/vocals were quality as well. This album is almost 2 hours total and as I mentioned a lot of history and a lot of classics. They really are strong on this. The energy is all there and Schmier leads the way on vocals giving a great live performance. I'm glad he re-joined the band back in 1999 and let's all say good-bye to Mike! Get this album!

(2008). Album:

German thrash metal veterans DESTRUCTION celebrate their 40th anniversary by setting the world ablaze with a new, hard-hitting grenade in the form of their new album, Diabolical (out April 8, 2022 via Napalm Records). As one of the most legendary German thrash metal bands in existence, DESTRUCTION grace the wall of fame alongside giants like Kreator, Sodom and Tankard. After the charging start of opener "Under The Spell", DESTRUCTION shows no mercy on title track "Diabolical", with raging drums, bloodthirsty riffs and hellish vocals that sink deep down into your bones. "No Faith In Humanity" relentlessly rages on with non-stop headbanging action, while DESTRUCTION continues to smash eardrums on "Hope Dies Last" - providing unbeatable brutality with unstoppable speed, destructive verses and screeching voices. "Tormented Soul", on the other hand, is loaded with proper heavy metal and explosive drums. The grand finale of the 47-minute parade of devastation is provided by cover track "City Baby Attacked By Rats", originally by GBH, guaranteeing whiplash by combining rough hardcore punk with brute thrash metal. On their 15th record, DESTRUCTION brings out heavy artillery full of honest and uncompromising thrash metal, catapulting you straight into the seventh heaven of metallic bliss and causing a massacre of razor-sharp sound no fan of the genre should miss!
