Bio:

Kerry Ray King (born June 3, 1964) is an American musician, best known for being the co-lead guitarist and songwriter of thrash metal band Slayer. He co-founded the band with Jeff Hanneman in 1981 and is one of two members to stay with the band for its 43-year existence, along with Tom Araya. During Slayer's hiatus from 2019 to 2024, King went on to pursue a solo career, with his debut album From Hell I Rise released in May 2024.

Album:

Kerry King has always been a lightning rod for criticism and has drawn a lot of negative commentary over the years for being who he is, but when you constantly put music out that makes people uncomfortable, it seems inevitable -- especially when your avenue for releasing this kind of music is none other than the mighty Slayer. The biggest challenge for King here is stepping out of Slayer's massive shadow while still trying to write in the similar style he did during the 80's and 90's. Kerry remains unapologetic about being himself and has even been quoted as saying that he didn't want his current solo band to be called Slayer lite. This release not only proves this, but also showcases King’s undiminished passion for thrash metal. King's way of accomplishing this is by recruiting some stellar talent around. Phil Demmel, in my opinion, is the secret sauce. His guitar style is similar but distinct enough to Jeff Hanneman's guitar playing to provide us fans plenty to enjoy for years to come. Paul Bostaph and Kyle Sanders do a fantastic job and play their little heart out for us. I certainly hope that they're allowed to contribute more ideas and get credit for music on the next record.During the first listen I am already hooked. The first two singles were a great preview to what was about to come, but thankfully there's some auditory surprises and I love this. Two Fists is fairly punk-ish and could easily been released as an original on Slayer's Undisputed Attitude. As I sit here listening to the new album I can only think of the review I left for Slayer's Repentless album. Every gripe I had in that review has somehow been addressed for this release. Almost as if Mr. King himself read it. For example; the opening track, Diablo, is as fairly repetitive as the Repentless opener, Delusions of Saviour, but Phil's lead work helps develop the track into much deeper territory than Delusions is able to deliver. The guitar tone on From Hell I Rise is much crisper and sharper than on Repentless. Overall the production here seems less muddy. The songs seem less cliche and not recycled. Trophies of the Tyrants is a great candidate for fresh riffs within the constrictions of being thrash.Regardless, I would put this effort above Slayer's last release and deem it a better experience to listen to. From Hell I Rise is King’s middle finger to anyone who doubted he could stand alone. The album feels raw, relentless, and it’s pure Kerry King. So, if you’re ready to get your face melted off and your ears thrashed, dive into this album.
