Bio:

Founded in 1988 out of the ashes of swiss Speed Metal pioneers CARRION, Poltergeist released two well acclaimed demo tapes and played quite a lot of shows in their home country Switzerland. After one of these shows where they played with HADES and DESPAIR, Robert Kampf (then Leadsinger for DESPAIR and owner of the freshly started label CENTURY MEDIA) decided to offer POLTERGEIST a record contract. They convinced him with their powerful live appearance and their solid craftmanship on their instruments. From 1989 to 1993 they released 3 albums and played shows and tours with bands like DESTRUCTION, KREATOR, SODOM, TANKARD, CORONER, HELLBASTARD, WATCHTOWER, VOI VOD, RUMBLE MILITIA and many more. After the last tour in 1993 with CORONER the band split up and partly transformed in GURD.On New Years Eve 2013, Marek, André and V.O. met and discussed the old times. after listening to their old records and posting a picture on Facebook, lots of people demanded an immediate reunion..sparked by these reactions, Sven Vormann ( an old friend of the band and formerly drummer for Destruction) decided to bring order to the chaos and organized some first rehearsals. Soon it was clear that the old magic was back. And to complete a 20 year old dream, they finally found in Chapser Wanner the right second guitarplayer to bring the haunting guitar mayhem from the records also to the stage! Now 20 years later THE POLTERGEIST IS BACK AND READY TO RUMBLE....

Album:

Poltergeists… invisible and hypothetical… quite annoying and tangible sometimes as well, mind you… overall not very easily noticed as I’m pretty much the only scribe here that has attuned his radar to detect them. Not due to some uncontrollable passion for them although I do love the sophomore “Behind the Mask” to bits. My writing spree thrown their way is rather a sign of respect as I do think that they deserve more attention and recognition from the metal fanbase…and not only because they released one of the first genuine thrash metal recordings (“Evil is There!”) on Swiss soil in the distant 1986. Back then they were called Carrion, but shortly after this first stint they decided to carrion… sorry, carry on under the Poltergeist moniker, predating Tobe Hooper’s blockbuster by whole six years. Music-wise there’s very little to complain about as those who had already fallen for the Carrion opus will rejoice all over. In other words, brace yourselves for the good old thrash only that this time the hyper-active bash has been polished and tweaked around, the guys moshing more confidently but with obvious restraint as well… well, compared to the first instalment at least as there’s nothing wrong with wayward headbangers like “Three Hills” and “Inner Space”, with the title-track and “Writing on the Wall” nodding in the direction of Paradox’s “Heresy”, released the same year, with their more intricate veneer. A sure precursor to the more technical flair of the sophomore, these pieces don’t exactly set an example to follow the thrashing immediacy of short bullets like “You've Learned Your Lesson” and “Prophet” violating the more officiant setting although the guys wrap it on with the more intricately-woven roller-coaster “Ziila” and the more diversely-executed speed/thrashterpiece “Shooting Star”, the highlight here, an aural carnival of intense skirmishes and melodic embellishments. To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t left impressed by the performance of Andre Grieder here, the vocalist whom I later liked quite a bit and still view as one of the most convincing performers within a thrash metal context. At this early stage the man prefers to recite in a not very attached semi-clean fashion, spitting the lyrics with vehement velocity, trying to keep up with the fast-paced histrionics of his comrades. He surely achieves that but compared to his more melodic antics on subsequent efforts this particular delivery simply holds no water. Anyway, he’s just an accompaniment here leaving the others to do most of the talking, and also the shredding as again it wouldn’t be too hard for one to detect less ordinary nuances which later grew into something more impressive two years later. Not as distinctive and visionary as Coroner’s “No More Color”, and not as varied and memorable as, say, Drifter’s “Reality Turns to Dust “ or Apocalypse’s self-titled, this slab of impetuous speed/thrashisms by all means stood its ground with its not very flashy, non-fussy aura.It was surpassed by the sophomore, for the umpteenth time, but it still remains a perfectly acceptable entry into the band’s discography, especially when the guys never repeated this straight-ahead speed/thrashing heroism. They never rehash their previous feats note-by-note, always adding something new and fresh to keep the audience guessing, including on the comeback saga “Back to Haunt” which does wink at this “depression” here on a couple of more direct moments. It’s good to have the good old poltergeists around making the old school thrash noise… but please, bring the noise on more regular bases… I don’t know how else to scare away the vultures and hyenas gathering around this ever-fresh carrion.

Album:

These guys were the second genuine thrash metal act on the Swiss metal scene, if we count Celtic Frost, having started their career under the name Carrion. They managed to release one album (“Evil is There!”), a rough-around-the-edges, but highly inspired hard thrashing slab in 1986; before they decided to change their name to Poltergeist, and also to relocate to the European Mecca of metal, Germany that is. Two demos were recorded in quick succession before the band were ready with their debut, “Depression”, in 1989 seeing them practicing quite good energetic speed/thrash with more thought-out progressive developments along the lines of Paradox who had started their career around the same time. Then their singer Andre Grieder had a short spell with the legends Destruction who asked him to take part in the recordings of their opus “Cracked Brain” due to the departure of their frontman Schmier. Once he was done with them, the next Poltergeist instalment became a fact, the album reviewed here. The guys shred like demented here producing one of Swiss metal’s finest hours which starts with “We the People”, a maddening headbanger with brisk ripping riffs and blazing lead sections. The title-track cuts heads and limbs with these sharp lashing guitars before a sweeping lead passage saves the listener from the “carnage”, later bringing galloping delights for the ride. “Act of Violence” introduces more clever technical guitar work amidst the hyper-active thrashing also boasting a very cool memorable chorus with echoes of Paradox again although music-wise the delivery is way more compact and tighter than the debut. “Grey” is a short acoustic ballad, a nice touch which also shows Grieder in a more lyrical, more attached light; and “Delusion” is a smashing galloper with intriguing technical breaks that even reach the classical crescendos of Helstar’s “Nosferatu” at some stage.“Drilled to Kill” will start drilling the fan’s mind with razor-sharp technical riffs which are of the jumpier variety initially, but soon acquire the staple dynamic character that gets translated onto “Make Your Choice” which starts in a more elaborate manner and with a few balladic references before the technical galloping strokes resume turning later into a whirlwind of wild violent thrashing. “Chato’s Land” is a hectic nervy number which abandons the speedy approach for the sake of more moderate mid-tempo decisions where the bass plays a more prominent role. “Still Alive” is a raging blitzkrieg headbanger, the most aggressive cut here “spitting” fire and venom for about 3.5-min before “Driftin’ Away” wraps it on with minimalistic semi-balladic motifs. This is full of so much energy that the headbanging fanbase should put it very high on their list, and in this aspect there’s hardly any other album to beat it on Swiss ground. The band occupied a unique niche over there sitting between the overtly technical exploits of Coroner, Lunacy and Calhoun Conquer, and the more orthodox delivery of acts like Drifter, Apocalypse and Caustic. Their delivery was neither too complex nor very straight-forward thus making them a sure pick for both camps. Two years later the guys shot their third showing “Nothing Lasts Forever” which showed them still immersed in the old school metal canons producing another notable tribute to the classic thrash metal heritage with more elaborate arrangements, abandoning the remorseless heads-down approach from the preceding album to an extent. They left the scene in style without surrendering to any new vogues wrapping it on alongside Coroner and Apocalypse who also released their swansongs the same year. The guys are “back to haunt” the world of metal with “Back to Haunt” in 2016, a brand new saga, a rousing classic thrash hymns’ collection which looks back directly at their roots, putting them strongly on the map in the company of young budding newcomers from their homeland like The Artifice, Algebra, Surrealist, and Mandroid of Krypton who were looking for a veteran to lead them to the upper front of the thrash metal echelon. With Coroner not in the mood for composing any new material in the foreseeable future, it would be up to the Poltergeists to guide this young talented horde towards new metal horizons with more “apparitions” and other “hauntings” in stall.

Album:

Metal maniacs, rejoice! The Thrasher returns to present to you; POLTERGEIST, hailing from Swiss grounds – signed via Pure Steel records, and on their long-awaited 20+ year comeback album entitled: “Back To Haunt”.With 3 records behind them since formation of the quintet's existence in 1988: “Depression” (released in 1989), “Behind My Mask” (released in 1991), and “Nothing Lasts Forever” (released in 1993), it was about bloody time to be reunited, right? Yes. You would be right…though I have mixed feelings about quartets who disband and reunite; I can look past it when it's THIS long. After more than 20 years; we are treated with the quartet's latest endeavor: “Back To Haunt”. Now I am not at all too familiar with POLTERGEIST; being a Thrasher myself, I relish new discoveries such as this - and I can tell you with clarity that these guys mean business. Ferocious riffery that confirms the band's genre indefinitely; I am pleased to say that this resurgence was very much necessary, for the band and for Thrash Metal as a whole. It shows the band is ready to rumble and is resurrected with the sole purpose to thrash your noggins! This 4-piece band consists of V.O. Pulver on guitar who delivers some intense riffs that beg one to pound their fists; very much the same with Chasper Wanner, delivering killer riffery of the highest degree, which helps pummel the sound production with ferocity. The powerhouse manage to contribute fine precision with Sven Vormann on drums and Ralf W. Garcia on bass; everyone can be heard, which almost perfectly captures memorability, and so this helps create a rapid atmosphere while uniquely showcasing haunting elements that procreate POLTERGEIST efficiently. With complexity and dexterity, I personally sensed that this band took their time in the creation of “Back To Haunt”, composing with compassion to bring the community their most brutal and deadliest record in their catalogue. 10 intense tracks of thrashing mayhem; edging with an 11th bonus track from the Limited Edition version.Ranging at around an hour long…the titular track “Back To Haunt” thus begins the record; in pleasurable awe I enter into a sound production that literally all Metal bands should take note if you want to gain that merit. Not just sound production; also showcasing musicianship of aptitude skill. “Gone And Forgotten”, “Patterns In The Sky” & “And So It Has Begun” integrate some of the most pummeling beats and riffs that have that exquisite enjoyment to them. Similarly evident is “When The Ships Arrive”, “The Pillars Of Creation” & “Faith Is Gone”, where the lyricism and instrumentation is just fulfilling to the maximum. “Flee From Today”, “Shell Beach” & “Beyond The Realms Of Time”, individually implements an atmospheric balance of supreme fruition while making it the most heaviest record you'll listen to this year. Ending with “A Distant Knowledge” this band surely institutionalized themselves to create something immensely special. As a thrasher myself; it was easy for me to align an agreement with this act; “Back To Haunt” evolves with each listen and can only get better. If you are looking for that unprecedented discovery – look no further; POLTERGEIST will please all fans of Metal, as they should!
