Bio:

Started in 2004 by High School fellow metal heads, the members of Los Angeles’ own WARBRINGER are about to release their fourth studio album, programmatically entitled “IV: Empires Collapse”. After three releases on Century Media and an endless succession of tours with the likes of Arch Enemy, Exodus, Suicide Silence, Megadeth, Napalm Death, Suffocation, Hatebreed, Testament, Nile, Iced Earth, Symphony X, Obituary, Overkill, Kreator, Destruction, Nevermore to name a few, WARBRINGER looks forward to unleashing a new, fourth chapter in their fast rising career, which has already doubtlessly established this hard-working five-piece as worldwide leaders of a new generation of Thrash Metal.Following an intense string of successful tours around the globe for their acclaimed 2011 album “Worlds Torn Asunder”, WARBRINGER once again locked themselves in the studio in the summer of 2013 with producer Steve Evetts (Sepultura, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Suicide Silence) and dedicated themselves to their craft, pushing their musical abilities beyond previous limits in order to assemble the new album. “While some of the material is more direct and some more technically demanding, Steve paid just as much attention to detail on simple hooks as he did on complex arrangements”, said drummer Carlos Cruz about the new recording process. “IV: Empires Collapse” is a collective work and the band’s most diverse so far, also marking the first recording session for recently added members Jeff Potts (Guitar) and Ben Mottsman (Bass), both formerly of Mantic Ritual, who have been touring with WARBRINGER for the longest part of the previous album campaign. On this newest effort, which was mixed by Brett Eliason (Pearl Jam, Heart, BoySetsFire) at Trailmix Studio and mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music (Cannibal Corpse, Hatebreed, Converge), WARBRINGER’s trademarked furious and relentless Thrash Metal attitude and merciless sound remains unbroken and clearly distinguishable, but several new elements like a solid amount of traditional Heavy Metal feel, some grim and epic Black Metal riffing, a Punk / Hardcore edge to things as well as a some surprising songwriting turns make “IV: Empires Collapse” a vicious, highly entertaining and never one-dimensioned affair.“Musically, all five of us brought something for the rest of the group to work off of and we were all a part of chiseling away at the ideas”, explained Cruz. “Having five band members with eclectic tastes in music from Crust Punk to Progressive music and everything in between brought about new musical directions for the material.” Guitarist and main songwriter John Laux added: “This was an exciting project, I am proud of the contributions from everyone involved. Ben Mottsman and Jeff Potts are highly skilled musicians. It's no secret, in WARBRINGER we are no strangers to fresh blood. I couldn't have found myself in stronger creative company. Steve and Brett did a killer job capturing all of our individual voices and channeling them down into a compelling record.”Vocalist John Kevill commented the material on “IV: Empires Collapse” as follows: “The songs themselves are what stands out the most to me. We have the rollercoaster prog-thrash opener "Horizon", the industrial/dystopian "The Turning Of The Gears", the punky "One Dimension", the ripping thrasher "Hunter-Seeker” and the just fucking rockin' "Iron City", among all the rest! I think the closer, "Towers Of The Serpent", is probably my favorite song WARBRINGER has written to date, with a truly epic ending.” And the band closes off by adding: “We can confidently say each song has an identity of its own and will make for an exceptional album with no filler material.I hope everyone enjoys listening to the record as much as we enjoyed making it. And we'll see you out somewhere beyond the highway!"In terms of upcoming touring, WARBRINGER already have extensive runs lined up to kickstart the support work for the release of “IV: Empires Collapse”. In North America, WARBRINGER will support Thrash legends Kreator and Overkill throughout October and November 2013. In Europe on the other hand, WARBRINGER will be heading out as main support for Metal veterans ICED EARTH between January and February 2014. Don’t miss out on catching WARBRINGER on the road somewhere nearby you, showcasing the fury of their newest effort “IV: Empires Collapse”…

Album:

Thrash albums are plentiful these days and it seems that there isn’t much that hasn’t been covered by the genre. That’s what makes it all the more important when a band tries to do something differently and California thrashers Warbringer’s upcoming album ‘Woe to the Vanquished’ is one such album.Beginning the album with a bang on “Silhouettes”, it only takes a moment to realize what the rest of the album is going to include. With breakneck speed riffage, galloping drums and an inclusive ambience, the changing nature of the song screams out for your investment. While all of the songs weave an interesting piece of the albums tapestry, they are all unique in their own right and tell a stand alone story. While I have no doubt that this album was intended to be experienced from start to finish, I found that listening to songs piecemeal didn’t detract from the experience at all. This effect only heightened my appreciation for the album because although lyrically, all of these songs feel intertwined, yet the songs can be listened to on their own and still convey a story. There is really only one ‘true to genre’ thrash anthem on this album and that is the title track itself, with every other song managing to have some form of intrinsic difference that sets itself apart from the rest. It’s small details like the missile drop in “Shellfire”, the quiet outro of the 11 minute long opus “When the Guns Fell Silent”, sweep solos in “Silhouette”, or the entirety of the song “Spectral Asylum” that offered unique experiences separate from each other, all the while forming an integral part of the album’s story. While on the topic of “Spectral Asylum”, this song is the pinnacle of thrash melody with a rousing instrumental piece forming the perfect prelude into the album’s best solo and it’s these intricacies that make ‘Woe to the Vanquished’ special.Where ‘Woe to the Vanquished’ succeeds is not in its causal roots in thrash metal, but in the song structures themselves. This is a bread and butter thrash offering with enough heavy riffs to cause most thrash revellers to headbang until their necks snap off; but it’s the varied song structures that stop any of these songs from sounding similar to any in the current thrash landscape. You need look little further than “Descending Blade” or “Remain Violent” to feel these changes, but you could take a shot at almost any of the songs on the album and find that most don’t follow conventional structures.I could talk for ages about how the different nuances in the instrumental parts of the album but it’s honestly better left to be experienced. The guitar duels between Adam Carroll and Chase Becker are awe-inspiringly beautiful and are thankfully littered all over the album; and Carlos Cruz on drums is probably praying that the album never gets played from start to finish in one go because I could only count the amount of times he would stop on the album on one one hand. John Kevill does an amazing job at capturing the grit and raw energy of the lyrics through his vocal delivery, and nails the more traditional metal screams that are scattered around the album.‘Woe to the Vanquished’ has been a long time coming, but for fans of Warbringer, and thrash metal in general, the wait is definitely worth it. Treading a very delicate line of being a thrash album while also bordering more traditional metal and melodic metal, Woe to the Vanquished creates a sound that is quite refreshing in a genre which has become diluted over the years and Warbringer has really set themselves out from the crowd with this album which is a must have for any thrash metal fan.

Album:

The thrash revival of the 2000s produced a lot of copycat bands, happy to ape the music of yesteryear without bringing anything new to the table. Warbringer has always been different, since their debut ‘War Without End’ they have experimented and refined their sound, becoming a much-needed unique voice within the current thrash metal scene. Warbringer plays thrash metal, but the influence of death, black and modern metal are more evident than ever on ‘Weapons of Tomorrow.’ “Firepower Kills” starts the album off strong with a blast of thrash that channels early era Exodus. It’s one of the most straight forward, in your face tracks on the record, and sets the tone perfectly. There are some great lyrics here, too; I especially liked the closer “In a burning flash of white / the future looked so bright.” Can’t get much more metal than that!“The Black Hand Reaches Out” is bound to be a fan favorite, and I’m not surprised it they chose it for a music video. John Kevill gets a chance to flex his impressive vocal range here, switching between guttural death metal-ish growls and rapid-fire refrains. The star of the show here, though, is undoubtedly the guitars and that solo in the second half.“Crushed Beneath the Tracks” doesn’t quite match up to the first two songs, it’s a solid piece of thrash but doesn’t do anything to stand out. Fortunately, “Defiance of Fate brings” the attention back, mainly because it’s unexpected. Imagine if Pantera made a black metal power ballad, and you wouldn’t be far off. It’s strange, it’s different, but it works!“Unraveling” ramps up the energy again before “Heart of Darkness” brings us to the edge of into black metal territory once more. Having the bass actually audible in the mix (Yes, I’m still bitter about ‘…And Justice for All’) was a smart move as Chase Bryant’s sinister pulsing bassline underpins the song and drives up the momentum.“Power Unsurpassed” has been out for a while as a single, but it sounds better now due to a punchier mix (at least to my admittedly untrained ear when comparing to the YouTube upload). “Outer Reaches” is the second song that I feel doesn’t quite match the quality of the rest of the album. It spends a little too long meandering through generic chugging, and I found myself skipping it after a few listens.“Notre Dame (King of Fools)” and “Glorious End,” fortunately, close out the album with more style. The varied dynamics in Notre Dame are fantastic, and it’s up there with my favorite Warbringer tracks. “Glorious End” is a little longer, but rather than overstaying its welcome, it sounds like a culmination of the entire album into one song, drawing the various styles into one powerful sonic blast. A glorious end indeed, I’d happily take a whole album of these longer slightly more progressive songs.Warbringer’s ‘Weapons of Tomorrow’ is another great album that will please fans and has the potential to widen their audience further due to its confident blending of genres and excellent songwriting. There are a few forgettable parts here and there, but for the most part, ‘Weapons of Tomorrow’ will keep you hooked and further cement Warbringer’s place as one of the very best modern thrash bands.

Album:

Although it took some time to sink in, Warbringer’s 2020 album ‘Weapons of Tomorrow’ eventually became my favorite thrash metal album of this century. Ever since what was essentially their re-launch just over a decade ago, Warbringer has steadily been improving their sound. To a certain extent, this evolution came from not caring whether their compositions fit the traditional thrash metal mold, ending up with something that is surprisingly varied for something as consistently aggressive as what Warbringer does. ‘Wrath and Ruin’ goes for a slightly darker, more compact approach than ‘Weapons of Tomorrow’, and it is almost as good. One thing Warbringer excels at is bringing in influences from different metal subgenres to enhance their thrash metal. ‘Wrath and Ruin’ has examples of those in spades. The first single ‘A Better World’ has the distinct melodic death metal leanings that guitarist Adam Carroll’s riffs often have, while ‘The Neuromancer’ is a crushing stomper with a few distinct nods to early death metal. ‘Cage of Air’ even has some clear black metal influences in its riffing – and its finale – while the clean guitars on ‘Through a Glass, Darkly’ create a unique atmosphere without sacrificing the thrash metal feel at all.Thrash metal is still the main ingredient in Warbringer’s sound, however. People who prefer to hear that out of the band are in for a treat with the aggressive ‘The Jackhammer’ and especially the high-speed ripper ‘Strike from the Sky’, which has some of the coolest, tightest riffs on the album. Opening track ‘The Sword and the Cross’ is probably the most traditional thrasher on ‘Wrath and Ruin’, with some of the riffs being on par with the classics of the genre. ‘The Last of My Kind’ evolves from a dark thrasher to an even darker atmospheric finale, closing the album in style.Lyrics aren’t often brought up in my reviews, as they tend to have little impact on my enjoyment of an album, but John Kevill has slowly become my favorite lyricist in metal since Martin Walkyier. ‘Wrath and Ruin’ is the least traditionally war-focused Warbringer album lyrically. Many songs focus on how technology has been abused by those in power, right down to the modern day. This does bleed into weaponized conflict – see ‘Strike from the Sky’ – but Kevill takes a broader look at it. ‘Cage of Air’ and ‘A Better World’ are very current, and despair seeps out of them in a way that is uncommon for thrash metal.‘Wrath and Ruin’ confirms what ‘Weapons of Tomorrow’ and 2017’s ‘Woe to the Vanquished’ already hinted at: Warbringer has long outgrown the retro thrash metal wave during which they came up, and they have found their own niche within the genre. Within their niche, Warbringer proves that even if you tend to stay on the more aggressive, extreme end of the genre, it is fully possible to deliver a dynamic, highly varied album with a lot of depth without sacrificing the rabid energy thrash metal needs. Another very impressive work. I cannot recommend ‘Wrath and Ruin’ highly enough.Recommended tracks: ‘The Last of My Kind’, ‘Strike from the Sky’, ‘Cage of Air’
