Bio:

Their label, for marketing reasons, tended to present them as Americans because of commercial reasons and because many of them were from the States. They used to play in the American musical circuits in the NATO bases, but after they had been signed by Skyzo they often appeared on the Italian television. Around 1983 though, Jimbo and Jim returned to the United States and the band refused to sing in Italian, so they were expelled from the label and they started playing with a new line-up, finally self-producing a demo in 1985.Afterwards there were several rotations in the band. Raffaele Lopez was added on keyboards, Mario Mazzaro on bass and Daryl became lead singer only and frontman, dropping the bass guitar. The band started to perform quite often during that time, having a decisive influence on the hard rock music scene of Naples area that till then was virtually absent. Even a jam with Saxon took place during their tour in Italy.Later on, with the permanent transfer of Paul to Milan replaced by Franky Frullone and because the entire set list consisted of all cover songs, Daryl decided to change name of the band from Strike to Donna?. Some or all of the members of that lineup had been known as Romeo by the end of '87, and were featured in Underground Heavy Metal Hotwire 'zine in the April issue of that year, where a 4-song demo was reviewed. This band is famous for having released the very first Heavy Metal record in Italy.

Album:

Contains "Strike", the first ever Italian HM album, produced and released in 1981 plus 4 unreleased bonus tracks.Remastered album for fans of SAXON, TWISTED SISTER, NWOBHM, JUDAS PRIEST.Available on Cd, Red Lp (limited to 100 copies only) & Black Lp.Allegedly, the debut of the Italians STRIKE was already released in 1981.Although I personally don't like reissues very much, considering them in most cases a way to make a couple of extra quid by adding a couple of demos to the original product at most, there are always exceptions: the very Italian Jolly Roger Records, in recent months, has been carrying out a precious work of recovery and reissue of some works of our heavy metal pioneers, albums that are perhaps of a very good level or even simple gems that, for various reasons, would otherwise be almost impossible to find. Today it is the turn of Strike, a gritty Neapolitan quartet dedicated to a classic old-fashioned hard 'n' heavy, indebted as much to AC/DC as to Judas Priest and the then nascent NWOBHM movement; the album reissued for the occasion is their first, unique and homonymous full length dating back to 1981, moreover the first heavy metal LP ever published in our country, here presented under the new name Back in Flames, remastered and with the addition of four tracks. The goodness of the restyling work carried out by Jolly Roger is evident from the very first track: The sounds are fresh and clean and, although the drums are a bit too loud compared to the rhythm guitar and the vocals, they allow us to fully enjoy the pressing rhythm that characterises the whole of Shortcut to Hell, exquisitely NWOBHM in its procession; Head Out, on the other hand, seems more indebted to the sound of early Judas Priest, both in the guitars and in the vocals, with singer/bassist Dario Ingrosso often imitating Rob Haldord's way of singing, even though he doesn't have his deadly vocal extension. I Want to Rock (wonderfully authentic in its title) takes the mood more into the roaring 70s, weaving a vigorous hard rock track with a prominent bass line and a chorus that invites singing, characteristics that we can also find in Hot Wheels. It is clear from these tracks that our friends from Campania were attempting to compose a work that was as varied as possible, showcasing their most disparate influences; perhaps the expedient does not give the work cohesion, but their work and their grit are nevertheless fully appreciable and enjoyable. After two interlocutory tracks such as HM Army and Go Your Way, not bad but not brilliant either to be honest, the level returns to high with the earth-shaking Fire's Going Higher, which will delight all fans of early Iron Maiden and the NWOBHM sound in general. Closing the original album, finally, we have the beautiful Running the Race and We've Got the Music, which continues along the lines of HM Army and Go Your Way and therefore, overall, seems slightly less brilliant, although it is probably better than both the aforementioned songs. At this point, the album we have in our hands takes a leap forward in time by four years and presents us with the three tracks that Strike wrote for a demo: Opening the dances is Flames, which reveals itself somewhat surprisingly as one of the high points of the entire Back in Flames with its speed and the pyrotechnic guitar playing of Paolo Ingrosso and Lucio Mazzaro (who replaced previous guitarist Jimbo Moshier before the demo was written); It then continues, with equal surprise, with two tracks influenced by American-style hard 'n heavy, with more melodic openings and almost glam refrains (take my assertion with a grain of salt) than previously heard. Closing things off is the short but intense Fly, consisting of a couple of minutes of guitar virtuosity.Back in Flames, then, is a very interesting reissue/compilation, which brings together the entire musical production of one of our first hard 'n heavy bands: its weak points, as mentioned, are the lesser validity of some tracks and, in particular, a variety at times too excessive that does not give a precise identity to the work, although it is still more appreciable than a record all the same. For the rest, we are talking about a fresh and lively work, which regains new lustre and springs to life after an excellent restyling job. It may not be a masterpiece in the history of heavy metal, neither world nor Italian, but trust me when I say that it is well worth a listen.
